RB Christian McCaffrey, SF (7 Viewers)

how stupid were the Panthers for moving him that cheaply? Guy is a wrecking ball, best RB in the league by far...what a steal for the 49'ers.

At the time, a lot of the 49er fan base was screaming that it was a huge overpay for a RB who is “injury prone”. Seemed foolish at the time but even way more now.

Will CMC be ready Week 1?

Dr Jesse Morse weighs in (3:00)
So basically he has no idea, and he gave 2 examples where CMC missed a game due to calf strains and was fine after that.

Week 1 is a month away. He will play. Bet.
I think he probably plays. but it is the sort of injury that can linger.

if it lingers, that may be enough for some not to take him at #1 overall. I wouldnt be surprised if his ADP has shifted already. its likely a 1 and 1a scenario now rather than the clearcut CMC #1 scenario we had up to this point

I will still take him 1.01

He played through it before. It doesn’t sound too bad.

hey some of us are more risk averse than others. but yeah, I didnt see it as too big a risk. if it starts to look like he misses week 1 then I'd be more concerned.

Joe Burrow injured his calf at the beginning of TC last year, re-injured in Week 1.

Calf strains take time to heal and CMC is at risk of re-injury. This is his third calf strain since he joined the 49ers; missed a week (2nd Rams game), came back for the playoffs. Previous year the injury was in the playoffs and he played through it.

Not sure we have clarity rn on the severity. If it's a grade 1 strain, should heal in a week and he'll be fine to open the year. Probably just going to have to wait n see if/when he gets back to practice at TC, probably won't play in the PS.

given the timeline its likely a grade 2 strain. but it could be grade 1 and they were maybe just looking for an excuse to sit him

Not too worried either, besides the alternatives are WR currently holding out, and WR on the wrong side of 30 and...?

And a WR with JJM or Darnold throwing to them. Or Breece with Methuselah as their QB.

Calf injuries spook me. Certainly enough to discourage me from taking him 1.01...

I'm not sure how far I'd drop him, but probably enough where someone else sees/feels the value before me.

This far out, I'm probably still taking him at #1. Even if he needs to miss a week or 2 to start the season, I'd hate myself for passing on him and watching him roll off another 20 TD's.

Depending on what they get for Aiyuk, he may be even more involved in the passing game in 24.

Maybe don't fade your RB3 quite so hard if you're taking him at 1.01.

I think this makes a lot more sense than passing him up at 1.1 because of a strain in August. Shanny isn't dumb, he knows how vital CMC is to their team. He's going to rest him and make sure this doesn't linger.

He got married in the off season
Of course his calf is "a little tight"
So are some other body parts
He's a workout fiend
He doesn't need playing time in games that don't count
Heck he doesn't need reps at all
He's pick 1.1 for me in every league

Cody Schrader continues to climb the depth chart!
He doesn't seem to be getting enough mention. We've seen pretty much every other Cmac handcuff over the years do minimal for one reason or another (Eli Mitchell injuries etc.)

There's been a few blurbs over the last week or so about Schrader but apparently he's having an excellent camp and seems to be significantly more productive than 4th rounder Guerendo.

I saw a recent interview with SF RB coach, and he mentioned how much Isaac had to work on due to being a converted WR and needing to develop an RB mentality.

They asked about Mason and it was concluded that the two were butting heads because Mason [admittedly] had a lot of growing up to do.

(speaks about Schrader at about 1:35)
When he was asked about Schrader his eyes lit up, and almost at a loss for words talking about he was doing everything they saw and expected him to be able to do, and how he [the RB coach] was a big part of scouting him and getting him to SF. Very productive in the SEC in a small sample size. Fitting well in their running scheme. I think he's a very intriguing target to handcuff McCaffrey.

I got 1.4 in a big draft in a little over a week and I’m hoping someone takes him top 3. If they don’t I might pass.

I was already worried about his age and most of his massive career high usage last year. This calf injury put me over the top, those concern the heck out of me.

I rarely get the 1.01, but it's presenting quite the quandary this year. Based on ADP (sure, not perfect but directionally correct in early rounds), you get megahosed at WR this season. Having Olave or worse at WR1 gives me the ick. For those of you set on taking CMC 1.01, what are your rounds 2/3 plans? Yeah, yeah, yeah, let the draft fall to you, but be honest - you have an idea what will be there waiting.

He isn't making it to 1.04, you'll be alright :P

Odds are he won’t but it’s happening in leagues.

What leagues have you seen this in?

In 377 drafts tracked on fantasycaluclator done between Aug 5th and 7th, his lowest draft position was 1.03.

In FFPC, his ADP this week is still 1.01.

Have done 11 Bestball drafts yesterday and today on Underdog and went #1 in all of them.

Can you share where you have seen him going as low as 1.04?

lowest I've seen (pre injury) is 1.02 but in my mind the risk of injury likely ate up his cushon at 1.01 and brought him a little closer to the pack.

but the injury isnt serious. they say he will be back week 1. so as long as not time is projected to be missed I'm less concerned about the injury. but I could see some injury averse people who were burned on this guy with injuries in the past passing on him now. so 1.04 isnt a huge stretch.

personally I still think if hes on the board at #1 or #2 and you are up, you should probably take him. fully healthy, hes THAT good. but if you dont like the risk of injury, I'm sure you can easily find a buyer for that pick. but the price they are willing to pay to move up to 1 likely just went down some with the injury.

Have seen it in FFPC leagues which is where I’m drafting.

ADP still 1.1. Went as late as 1.3 in a FFPC draft I was actually in last week, this was before the calf injury of course. Went as late as 1.4 in a draft I was not in the past two days, how often I don't know, not very for often for sure, that's the latest he went but I did see a few he went 1.3 yesterday.

1.4 is still pretty far from consensus which is why I say the odds suggest it won't happen but it's certainly in a range of what I view as possible outcomes.
