2019 Post Season Subscriber Contest (3 Viewers)

Dang. I know that's a problem. It seems like some people think we send too much but for others, we don't send enough. I want to work on that for 2020.
I don't have a problem with the number of e-mails sent. What bothers me is if I'm already a subscriber why do I need to scroll through a couple of ads and sales pitches before I get to read what I subscribe for - the news, analysis, etc? It gets a bit annoying and after awhile I stop reading the e-mails sent all together.

No blame being placed, just letting you know.

I realize some need and expect the overload of info.  And for some of us it is just an overload of info.

eta - I see the post season contest as a HUGE plus.  I enjoy taking part, and would like to continue.

I only lost two players (John Brown & Boston Scott) and have 8 counting players for this week.  I scored 114 last week.  I think I am in decent shape to move on for at least one more week.  If Tenn, KC, Sea, and SF win then I have a good shot at surviving week 3.  I have no idea if I have any shot to win anything though.

John Brown               $13    15.80

Ryan Tannehill           $14    9.70
Derrick Henry            $15    26.90

Patrick Mahomes          $36    0.00
Damien Williams          $16    0.00
LeSean McCoy             $10      0.00
Demarcus Robinson         $4      0.00
Travis Kelce             $22      0.00

Russell Wilson           $26    26.75

George Kittle            $21      0.00
Replace your KC players with BAL, and you have my roster.

We intentionally limit the emails to include just one ad. Always have.

We need to do a better job of making the content attractive enough that people will scroll past an ad.

Agreed. Long time subscriber and I remember back in the day it seemed like the FBGs take on the news bites was fresh and different and insightful. Now there doesn't seem to be a fresh take on the fantasy impact. Not any different than I can get from any other e-mails from other FF sites. That was always your distinguishing feature and what I enjoyed. Maybe it's just me.

Thanks for the feedback as the customer is always right. I do think it's maybe you though as I've been very happy with the content of the "our view" takes. A great many times, there's not a ton to write about  a guy missing practice on a Wednesday or a player with a minor role. There are excellent sites out there but I think we consistently are better with the takes. But we can always improve.

We have a single ad and then we want to let folks know our new features that day and then we have a curated list of stories and what we think they mean. We can always do better there.

And please let's steer this back to the topic of the thread and the Subscriber Contest. Shoot me a PM if you have more thoughts on how we can change the Email Update. Thanks.

I wonder if next year there could be a percentage cut week one, then cut lines for the remaining weeks? That would keep people honest in not picking players from two teams they think are going to the SB.

Cole Beasley $12 8.40

A.J. Brown $13 1.40
MyCole Pruitt $2 3.40

Patrick Mahomes $36 0.00
LeSean McCoy $10 0.00
Sammy Watkins $9 0.00
Mecole Hardman $8 0.00
Travis Kelce $22 0.00
Harrison Butker $12 0.00
Kansas City Chiefs $10 0.00

J.J. Arcega-Whiteside $3 0.00

Kirk Cousins $15 18.00

Marquez Valdes-Scantling $2 0.00

Jimmy Garoppolo $25 0.00
Raheem Mostert $14 0.00
Deebo Samuel $16 0.00
George Kittle $21 0.00
Robbie Gould $8 0.00
San Francisco 49ers $12 0.00

The no-cut in week 1 saved my bacon.  Only lost two guys and will have 8 countable players this week.

I like my chances if KC-SF wind up in the SB...(MINN and TEN advancing this weekend would be HUGE)

I wonder if next year there could be a percentage cut week one, then cut lines for the remaining weeks? That would keep people honest in not picking players from two teams they think are going to the SB.
If the number of entries is going to be such an unknown, a weekly percentage cut throughout is the way to go.  Total entries should have absolutely no bearing on the outcome, nor should it play into roster construction.  As an example, let's say there are 10K or 1K submissions.  If the weekly cut is 50%, you will have either 1250 or 125 SB finalists, but the weekly cuts will be similar, and that's what it's all about.  Guessing the number of entries should not be a strategy consideration.  You could even vary the weekly cut percentage, and in the end, the weekly cut line would remain fairly close, no matter how many entries there are.

That said, Joe has been reading this thread and we have made our points clear.  I am sure the staff will discuss and make appropriate changes for next year, if any are warranted.  Their decision will determine how I research for next year.  If the contest remains hard-numbered week to week, I will spend most (if not all) of my time trying to figure out how many entries there will be, and that's what next year's thread will be about.

Getting back to this year's contest, 703 Mark Ingram owners are hoping he makes a go of it on Saturday.  He was the 5th most common RB, and an expensive one to boot.  If he is out or severely limited, Gus Edwards ($8, 452 owners, 9th most common) may be quite the steal.  Even Justice Hill ($4, 173 owners, 20th most common) would be in the mix, but likely only come SB week.

I'm a KC-GB Super Bowl entry, not sure how many of us there are, or if my 7 total will be enough even it is those two teams.  NO getting knocked out hurts because I was counting on a Sea-GB NFC championship game.

Devin Singletary         $12     16.40

Cole Beasley             $12      8.40

Derrick Henry            $15     26.90

Not sure of the technology, but what about opt-ins for various types of emails?  I am a regular reader of the newswire page so the daily email is mostly a rehash of things I’ve seen before.  I read for the analysis article, features, and (honestly) ads for contests and what not.  Would love to forego the “daily update” and still get the specials...I’d be more likely to notice them whereas I’ve taken to deleting the daily as “yesterday’s news.”

Now very likely there are others who want the daily news summary in their inbox each morning but don’t care for the contest promotions.  A different set of selectors would allow customized experience.

You can still put an ad atop each email.  It’s easy to scroll past if not of interest, and yours are often topical enough to hold interest.  I for one am glad you don’t imbed the ad copy inside your content.

I decided to just start clicking all the cheapest boxes.  I managed to field a roster of 65 players, covered all positions, and even have a buck to spare!

QB - Taysom Hill - NO - $8 - 16.0, TE - Josh Hill - NO - $6 - 3.3

RB - Alexander Mattison - MIN - $5 - 3.5, WR - Olabisi Johnson - MIN - $4 - 3.7

WR - Isaiah McKenzie - BUF - $4 - 6.3, TE - Dawson Knox - BUF - $5 - 2.9

WR - Deontay Burnett - PHI - $4 - 1.5, PK - Jake Elliott - PHI - $5 - 11.4

WR - Phillip Dorsett - NE - $5 - 1.6, TE - Ben Watson - NE - $4 - 8.3

TE - Anthony Firkser - TEN - $3 - 11.3, TE - MyCole Pruitt - TEN - $2 - 3.4

WR - DeAndre Carter - HOU - $3 - 1.5, TE - Darren Fells - HOU - $6 - 9.7

WR - David Moore - SEA - $5 - 7.7
My team of 65 cheap guys would have made the cut, even in a normal year.  They scored 92.1.  Let's see how they do this week.  Sadly, I lost 21 players, and am rolling with only 44 now.

I think you are projected for 124.9, at least according to Dodds.

Just how pivotal was the Saints loss to the Vikings for this contest?  Here is the overall contest money spent...

Drew Brees - $68,970

Michael Thomas - $65,654

Entire Seahawks roster (12 players) - $46,422

Entire Titans roster (13 players) - $38,206

Alvin Kamara - $33,176

Entire Packers roster (14 players) - $28,770

Entire Texans roster (12 players) - $19,897

Entire Vikings roster (15 players) - $13,450

More money was spent on each of Brees and Thomas as individuals than was spent on the entire rosters of GB, HOU, and MIN combined ($62,117).

If it were a NO/SEA superbowl, this entry would have won hands down.

Regardless of what ends up happening, this was a good entry. It’s obvious you planned ahead and gave yourself a path.

I get 2 chiefs and 2 49ers this week with Hopkins, Valdes-Scantling and Tennessee Kicker.  I need Hopkins to have a big game.  If he can grab me 20+ I feel pretty good about advancing.  Tough to know what the cut will look like with the NO players not counting.

Does anyone have a link to the query for this contest (if there is one)?
There is no querier at this point, and I doubt FBG will offer one like they do with the regular season contest.  The best you can do is use calcomatic to see ownership numbers for individual players.  There is no way to see what entries have combinations of players, without looking through all 3057 entries by hand.  I wish I had printed out a copy of the original blank entry form, because with that I would have access to all prices for all players.

Who you rooting for, based on your entry?

TEN v BAL - Henry or Edwards/Hill?  Rooting for TEN, and the only way they have a shot is Henry going wild.

HOU v KC - If KC loses, I am complete toast.  I'm willing to part with Fells after he gets a few catches and hopefully a TD.

SEA v GB - Wilson/Homer or MVS/Graham?  Rooting for SEA here of course, but if GB wins, I will have a few rare players.

MIN v SF - I own none, so I hope MIN wins.  Need to whittle down some SF teams.

ok ill bite.  how exactly would someone have done their homework and anticipated a reduction in entries??

Regular season entries were down by about 17%.  Contest opened on New Years Eve this year vs. New years Day, meaning we lost a day where the work surfers could find the entry form.  If the number of e-mail reminders about the contest were the same, they weren't as obvious to me.  Lastly, dfs interest has waned to nothing in the dfs forum.  That seems like a good indicator of ff interest this late in the season.

I didn't expect this amount of fall off, but I did expect the cut line to fall and adjusted my selections accordingly.
lol ok.  seems a bit beyond the scope of this contest though, dont you think??

Would love KC to lose

Despite losing NO the cut will be higher. Only cutting 1057 entries instead of 2000
In the end, roster construction will be the biggest factor.  Week 2 allows for a max of 16 scores, but it's anyone's guess as to how many of the 3057 entries will have lots of options.  I will be entering the week using 10 scores, but will that be enough?

What a huge difference between last year and this year.  Last year 6700 entries this year around 3,000 or so.

So basically the 1st week was a free pass but no one knew it be a free pass which means you wasted money on players if you took anyone who lost.

Had we known there would be less than 4,000 entries it would have changed who we all took big time.

Last year I banked on lesser entries and lost on the 1st week because I didn't use hardly any players was banking on around 4,000 people.  This year I switched up used up money on 4 players who lost turns out I should used last years strategy.

This is a big reason this contest is so frustrating no consistency to know what you should be doing because it is changing year to year.

Combined, the 3057 entries rostered a total of 45,376 players.  That averages out to 14.8 roster spots per entry.  Here is the breakdown by team:

BAL - 6539 - 2.14 players = $44

KC - 5489 - 1.80 players = $34

SF - 5369 - 1.76 players = $27

TEN - 3409 - 1.12 players = $12

SEA - 3238 - 1.06 players = $15

GB - 2650 - .87 players = $9

NE - 2977 - .97 players = $13

PHI - 2607 - .85 players = $8

BUF - 2197 - .72 players = $8

The average entry is entering week 2 with 9.71 players worth $152.

You are projected for 114.2.  Good luck, and you have a real shot if it's a BAL/GB SB

Odd timing. Within the past 30 days I unsubed because of the combo of frequency and annoying ads for every email.  Wouldn't have unsubscribed if just one of these 2 didn't happen.  I like the emails for keeping a finger on the pulse and breaking news.  I'll miss the updates which is why it took so long for me to pull the trigger on dumping them.

Stupid thoughts.  If there was a brief paragraph/sentence at the top of the email referring to a great contest opportunity...ad teaser, that wouldn't bother me.  But i've seen the promo and checked out the rules and even signed up for a couple, so i'm done getting a full add to scroll over in each email before seeing content.  I'm cool with getting  spotlight emails sprinkled in bringing the contests or subscriber offer with fanduel/draftkings/etc to my attention.

I have players from 4 different teams, but they play each other, so no matter what, I'll have 4 players count in week 3 (if I survive)

TEN v BAL - Rooting for Jackson, Ingram, Brown, Tucker.  TEN i'd lose Tannehill, Henry, AJ.  Included AJ for an outside shot if the SB was GB/TEN.

HOU v KC - Rooting for HOU.  I see a TON of KC heavy entries.  With KC and NO out, everyone else can coast week 3.

SEA v GB - Rooting for Rodgers, Adams, Jones & Williams.   SEA I'd lose Wilson & Metcalf

MIN v SF - Rooting for MIN.  I don't have any players from either team and I think it's a better matchup for GB next week.  Also more likely to have teams loaded up with SF players than MIN.

There is no way you won't make it to week 3.  You have 4 QB's going, as well as several potential high scoring players.  Just based on all the teams have I have skimmed through, you may have a better SB shot if it's GB/TEN.  Good luck
