You and Raging already took my first choices back during Hair Nation. I'm not nearly as excited now. Raging really got me with an oldie but goodie that was my first choice.

Don't Close Your Eyes - Kix
Wait - White Lion

Maybe the best of the genre, already spoken for.
Is Wait a power ballad?

Ooh. I don't know. Good question. Mid-tempo rocker at its fastest, so I don't know. I guess I can't see any lighters being deployed to slowed-down music, so maybe not.
It starts off as one but leaves the PB zone after the first minute.

Yeah, I'd forgotten about that. The years have passed and I remember the video and the beginning, not so much the rockin' part that's sort of obviously there. They have a different power ballad off the album that I won't mention. Lighters flying all over the place on that one in live recordings.

Yeah, I'd forgotten about that. The years have passed and I remember the video and the beginning, not so much the rockin' part that's sort of obviously there. They have a different power ballad off the album that I won't mention. Lighters flying all over the place on that one in live recordings.
YouTube allows you to vary playback speed.  If you slow the later choruses of Wait down by 25%, it sounds just like a power ballad. I bet you could do this to transform a lot of Classic Rock rockers.

Oh my, oh my. I never knew you could adjust playback speed. I just found it after you said that. That's something else.

It starts off as one but leaves the PB zone after the first minute.

That's the one I was thinking of.  I don't have hardline criteria or anything, it's mostly "do I remember people slow dancing to this at a cheesy MS or HS dance?"

Here we go.

Round 309:

The Ego Meets the Dove (CSNY)

A. Country Girl -- Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

Number of CSNY studio songs written or co-written by Neil and released during their heyday: 4

Number of those songs I have already drafted: 3

So this makes sense as the first Neil pick for this playlist.

B. The Wall Song -- Crosby and Nash

One of Crosby's best songs, showing off the hazy vibes and weird tunings that were the hallmark of his style, appears on the first duo album he released with Nash in 1972. It features an amazing guest spot from Jerry Garcia, whose playing I tend to prefer in contexts outside The Dead.

When I saw CSN in 1997, Crosby explained what each of them bring to the table.

"Graham is the one who writes the hit songs that make millions of dollars. Stephen is the one who writes the legendary rock and roll songs. And I'm the one who writes the weird ####."

I'll get to Stills and Nash this evening.

Round 309.xx

Category: Power Ballads/Lighters Up

Song: Wrecking Ball

Artist: Miley Cyrus

I was gonna wait to get all deconstructionist, but there's more than just the 70s and 80s and guys wearing long hair to power balladeering. Here's a former teen queen taking a power ballad for a spin with lighters in tow. And that swinging outfit! Listen to it before they ban it from being played 300 feet within a radio station in Georgia.

With no argument that there isn't many before and after, when I think power ballads, I think hair, mid 70s to mid 80s. When I think lighters up, one song comes to mind instantly.

1st pick, 308 to go...

Lights Up - Rd 309.xxxxxxxxxxx

Journey - Lights (official video)

Lights - Spotify

Sorry for the delay! Yesterday was crazy. Lou has a ventricular septal defect which essentially is the best kind of heart defect a dog can have (thank goodness). He's going to have a loud heartbeat for the rest of his life but it won't affect him in the long run, so that's great news. He can cower and hide behind @Eephus at the dog park for years to come!

I missed yesterday, again so sorry!

Round 307 - Don't Worry Be Happy

Junior Senior - Move Your Feet

D-d-don't stop the beat
I c-c-can't control the feet
P-p-people in the streets
C'mon everybody, move your feet

💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽

Round 308 - The Beeb (I was very excited for this playlist!!)

Five Star - System Addict

This is one of my all-time favorite songs and I just found out they are from England!

Also, Mrs. Eephus is a big fan of British music and wanted to submit a bonus song!

"When the Brits get it right, they get it right" - Mrs. Eephus

Round 308 - The Beeb (BONUS SONG)

Mis-Teeq - Scandalous

The theme to the 2004 critically panned Catwoman movie. The song still slaps though.

Love Scandalous! Took it in a one hit wonder jukebox draft.

These two flow really well together on the first CSN album so it's nice to have them in the same sequence for our playlist.

Round 310:

The Ego Meets the Dove (CSNY)

A. You Don't Have to Cry -- Crosby, Stills and Nash

This Stills composition was the beginning of CSN. Crosby and Stills had started working together and had developed several songs including this one before they were introduced to Nash by mutual friends. At that first meeting, they played this song to show what they were working on. Nash asked them to sing it a second time. After they did, Nash asked them to sing it a third time, and when they began, he sang along with them, adding a high harmony part. The musical connection was instant and that day they decided to become a trio. Their memory connection is less tight, as they can't agree on whose house that first encounter happened in: Joni Mitchell's or Cass Elliott's. Well, ya know, if you remember the '60s, you weren't there.

B. Pre-Road Downs -- Crosby, Stills and Nash

Here's what I said about this Nash tune in my 1969 countdown:

It didn't get much groovier than this in 1969. Chunky rhythm guitar and organ riffs propel this along bouncily, while Stephen Stills manipulated the tape so his lead guitar lines are backwards. The trademark CSN harmonies uplift the proceedings, and Graham Nash's lyrics winkingly reference sex and drugs. A pure joy to listen to.

The live version released on 4 Way Street 2 years later has a completely different vibe, recast as a hard-charging rocker that may be as close to proto-punk as CSN(Y) ever got.

Round 310.xx

Category: Lighters Up

Song: Don't Never Leave Me (Live)

Artist: Hanoi Rocks

A mid-tempo rocker from Hanoi Rocks Bangkok Shocks Saigon Shakes slowed down live for the burning of lighters galore. They would go on to release a completely different version called "Don't You Ever Leave Me," off of the album Two Steps From The Move, once their English got good enough to realize that power ballads were where the bread and butter lay in the States and that their double negative had unintended consequences that gave their original plea a different meaning than obviously intended. Unfortunately, their drummer, Razzle, died in the infamous car crash with Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe and they disbanded shortly after, likely missing out on some accolades and a decent amount of fame.

Lighters up for Razzle, if you please.

Loving the mix of types of power ballads so far!!  Yes, I fully admit to going right to the 80s/90s hair bands, and that will probably be most of my picks, but I dig the curveballs thrown in there that I probably wouldn't have thought of with Ms.Cyrus, Hold Steady, Zeppelin, etc..

I might have to bonus up RD 310 Ilov80s style tonight.
