Round 524:

Art Rock, etc.

One More Red Nightmare -- King Crimson

I'm not entirely sure where the divide between art rock and prog lies, but I'm pretty sure Crimson has stuff that falls on both sides of it.
I thought they were the same, at least when used nowadays. I know I heard "art rock" used for the type of music KC, Yes, ELP, etc....made back when it was new. I don't think I ever heard "prog" (as opposed to "progressive", which meant something else entirely) used until the 80s or 90s, and all of those 70s bands got retconned into it.

Sorta the opposite of what happened with "heavy metal", when fans of 80s hard rock kicked out the bands that the term originally applied to.

Gotcha. It was definitely not fancy when I was there. I think twice in the mid-00s.
Yes way back it was mostly a bowling alley and they closed down a few alleys and the bands played there on the lanes.

Now it’s almost a NYC nightclub. There’s only about six lanes in the back corner and they’re “fancy”. There’s a diner in a separate room off in that area also. The rest is a big bar and a huge area of couches and lounge chairs (when theres not bands. There’s a big stage area now for when theres bands and a giant projector screen TV is there when no band.

Probably modeled after the Brooklyn Bowl.

I wonder if we've ever ended up at the same show unwittingly. Between 1993 and 2012 I lived in various parts of Central Jersey and came to Asbury Park for shows occasionally.

Probably modeled after the Brooklyn Bowl.

I wonder if we've ever ended up at the same show unwittingly. Between 1993 and 2012 I lived in various parts of Central Jersey and came to Asbury Park for shows occasionally.
I’ve only lived in Asbury the last year but have know the area long before that. During that time period I lived in Hoboken, Jersey City, Weehawkin and then mostly Watchung. But it’s very possible as I’ve been to many NY/NJ shows - and we followed some of the same music scenes. I’ve seen Neil with and without Crazy Horse about 5 or 6 times so maybe even there.

Yep. Since 1993 I've gone Eatontown -> Wanamassa -> Highland Park -> Yardville -> Pennington -> Somerville -> Phillipsburg -> Barrington. Most of my Lost Years were in Somerville, which was the perfect location for concertgoing because it was a reasonable drive to NYC/Hoboken, Asbury Park, New Hope and Philly/Camden.

Round 526:

A. Segue Way

Ohio / Machine Gun -- The Isley Brothers

Neil didn't really do the segue thing, but here's a great way to get him on the playlist. On their 1971 album Givin' It Back, the Isleys covered songs by the cream of pop/rock songwriters, most powerfully on this fusion of protest songs by Neil and Hendrix.

B. Sports Ticker

Total Football -- Parquet Courts

Delightfully random.

Also, #### Tom Brady.

525.k4  Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - And I Love Her  (Detroit)

Boy oh boy did the Beatles love Smokey (and the rest of Motown), especially John.  Smokey did them the honor of covering this song after they'd covered/stolen so much of his work.  :)
I think their love of Smokey and The Miracles is equaled by my love of the same.

This site looks weird to me with the bright white background. It won't work correctly for me in dark mode today.

Round 526

Dazz - Brick  (Bring in 'Da Funk)

Funky dancing get up, get down, shake your booty
Music makes your body move, well all right
Huh. I'm never in dark mode on this site. I find the other way around very weird and very akin to political manifesto sites that have a heavy use of blink tags, as in, "Why are you creating a political manifesto that includes nutty blink tags? For emphasis?" Dark mode reminds of that van I saw in a parking lot once that had fine writing in white-out all over it and was talking about government conspiracies of every variety.

The truth, I guess, is in the dark mode, but I'm unaware of it.

Light or dark, I can read a variety of government conspiracies next door in the political forum. rock seems to get arrested there often by the board police.  He may be in cyber jail right now.   Anyway, I like dark mode because it is easier on my eyes.

Tons of conspiracy in then PSF. It's too painful for rock to bear, and he does indeed wind up in cyber jail. He cannot separate the venom from the venomous, and he winds up addressing the whole kit and kaboodle, which is a no-no.

Yes, I agree that dark mode is easier on the eyes. Everyone's mileage, of course, varies, I just find the links look like blink tags and the mode makes me take the written word less seriously. If only people would do the same with rock, he wouldn't get reported so much and so obviously by certain characters that he claims the mods, in a personal note, called "annoying."

Oh yeah

Round 527 - Public Transportation - Superpowers Enable Me To Blend In With Machinery - Dillinger Four

Acoustic Dave Hause version

I adore this song for some reason, mainly because of the futility of it, and the hopefulness of the ending that sentiment alone will prevail over a very necessary reality of production of some sort. It's certainly the most pie-in-the-sky of views, but on a bad day? Long live the Triple Rock I never got to see.

She keeps the Variety section and then gives the rest to me
She says she remembers when buses were nicer, "no dignity in plastic seats"
But there's something about the way she said, "the only good boss is one that's dead"
Broad shoulders giggled all over the bus and work ethics crumbled into "them and us"

#### 'em all
#### 'em all
#### 'em all
#### 'em all

And all these spectres of the workplace
Turned from effigy back to reality
And yeah, I wish it was that simple
To think a belly laugh is really all we need

But it's the slow decay of the day-to-day
That says take your paycheck
Accept your place and fade away
But there was dignity in plastic seats that day

I just realized that I have a limited-to-three-hundred edition of this vinyl platter. I don't suppose, given its sales and its intended audience, that it'll be worth anything. Ever. We can all hope, though, that product finds its worth in the second-hand market and I retire a free man.

A couple decades ago, I took a snorkel day tour of the Napali Coast on a 50 foot catamaran in Kauai, and I got so sea sick.  The channel we had to cross was very choppy that day, and the boat was slamming against the waves. Around 5 or 6 people got sick first, and one of my friends kiddingly whispered, "look at those losers getting sick."  10 minutes later I was throwing up in a bucket, with a skipper handing me crackers and telling me to focus on the horizon.  It was too late for any horizon focusing. My motion sickness had been fully activated. I felt a bit better once we stopped to eat lunch and snorkel, but I started puking again when we crossed the channel on the way back. 🤮  Once we came ashore, I laid on the beach and drank some gatorade, and I felt ok within 30 minutes. 👍

Round 527

Catamaran - Allah-Las  (Public Transit)

Round 527:

Public Transit

Southern Pacific -- Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Yes, I'm taking songs from Re*ac*tor on back-to-back days.

Neil is obsessed with trains, and model trains were his chief way of bonding with his son Ben, who has severe cerebral palsy. He even heavily invested in Lionel. From Wiki: "Young was part owner of Lionel, LLC, a company that makes toy trains and model railroad accessories. In 2008 Lionel emerged from bankruptcy and his shares of the company were wiped out. He was instrumental in the design of the Lionel Legacy control system for model trains, and remains on the board of directors of Lionel. He has been named as co-inventor on seven US patents related to model trains." Southern Pacific is probably his best song about trains, and is the only song from Re*ac*tor that shows up in his live sets on more than very rare occasions.

That's also awesome. The more I learn about Neil, the more I like him.
