If you had a plan to move to Africa... (1 Viewer)

Probably Botswana or Namibia, Tanzania and South Africa would be my next tier.

Algeria, Tchad, Central African Republic, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Somalia, Mozambique are countries you wouldn't want to even change planes in.

What kind of place is Senagal? I just added a goal keeper from there to my u10 team and don't know much about it.

Morocco, specifically because if you move to -- and stay in -- the right neighborhood(s) in Tangier, you're pretty much in Europe, both culturally and geographically.

My buddy is from there. He claims its pretty cool and laid back. Was Tangier the place where Bourne was chasing that guy on the scooter before the explosion?

Is there a legit answer for "what's the most European city in Africa?"
Well almost all the major cities were designed by the Europeans, so most of them at least have a European feel.

Pretoria and Capetown are both very European, the cities in Morocco and Tunisia look like Spain. Lagos is pretty interesting also, lots of beautiful neighborhoods in that city.

I loved Capetown. It was beautiful and a lot of fun.

ahem

Looks to be a tad unstable but that coastline is calling me.

Hypothetically speaking, which country would be ideal to raise a family?
South Africa. Cape Town has a bit of a San Francisco vibe to it. Nice topography over looking the ocean. Just don't swim in the ocean. Great white attacks 50 yards offshore if that.

Never been there. Generally I would probably never choose by free will to live in an Arab country.

Mozambique has an incredible coastline and I'm reading good things about the economy there. People are nice, Maputo is a big city close to South Africa, and they seem to have gotten over their internal struggles. I have been twice, but once was during the floods when it was a complete mess.

Namibia is my choice. I have this fantasy of moving to Windhoek.

My wife's father is from Egypt, owns an apartment there that I could live in , and my sister in law lives there. So that's where I'd go.

DD- I assume you've been to Diego Garcia, but have you spent any time in Mauritius? I used to work with a couple of guys from there, and would love to visit.

I remember I was going to Africa. I got to the airport and I was short $10 for the plane ticket. I had to ask people for money to get the ticket.

I was supposed to go to Diego a few different times but never made it. I have a friend who goes to Mauritius and to Reunion for vacation, swears by it. There is a city on Reunion called Le Tampon, not the bloody mess you'd imagine.

African countries I never have been to but really want to visit: Botswana, Zimbabwe (once nut job dies), Zanzabar, and especially Madagascar

Underrated: Cameroon, Namibia, and Ethiopia

Overrated: Egypt

Strangest: Tchad

Scariest: Sierra Leone

Prettiest: Mozambique

Nicest people: Cameroon

Hottest women: Eritrea

Best animal: Lion

Scariest animal: mosquito

My BIL, his wife and 2 kids are moving to Cameroon in a couple of weeks. I'd love to hear more about your experiences there, Dr. D.

I've lived in Swaziland for about 2 years now. If you want to raise a family safely I don't think there's much better out there. Beautiful scenery and the people are so nice. No need for shots before you come, Malaria is non existent. Swaziland is mostly bordered by SA but has Mozambique on the east. Downside would be there's not much for kids to do but I don't know if that differs a whole lot from most African countries. When I'm in SA and people ask where I live they usually scoff at Swaziland, I just find it funny because no way in hell would I raise a family in a country where every white person has either been robbed or has a family member that's been robbed. When I was in SA I went into a store and a guy just starts telling me how his neighbor just got killed and if I had been robbed yet and tips on how I should carry my wallet. I was just trying to buy some door hinges.

working on a house in Tangier for a client from NYC. neighbors on 2 sides are also from NYC, other one is French. lots and lots of expats from all over in Tangier apparently... had no idea.

My boss spent some time in Mali and though I've heard there are some sites worth visiting, he didn't see those and what he did see frightened him. First night in the hotel room, he went to take a shower and the shower head fell off. And the horrific smell...permeating everything.

What's up with Sierra Leone? Worse than Cleveland?

The real questions here is what country is my family least likely to be:

1) killed in?

2) raped in?

3) tortured in?

4) macheted in?

The correct answer is Botswana.
