This states NYC, not manhattan. While 93k for a family of four is not much at all regardless of where in the City you are, there are far less expensive housing options the outer boroughs. That article is basically my life (minus the being born here part). Hell- some of our best friends moved to Portland and are echoing everything written there.Priced out of New YorkAccording to a 2013 study by the Economic Policy Institute, the average family of four needs $93K to survive modestly in New York, the biggest expenses being housing, childcare and healthcare. (That $93K does not allow for any vacations, eating out or savings, by the way.) It’s the most expensive place to live in the United States.
But 93k?
Ok... so the average- AVERAGE- 3 Bedroom (family of 4) in Manhattan was over 5k a few years' back (can only imagine what it is now). To rent here now you have to show tax returns and pay stubs that show you make 40x your rent... so earnings well over 200k just to rent a 3br. An average 3b... not a "great" 3BR.That 40x thing has turned the rental market for 2 and 3 bedrooms into the playground of the 20-somethings who come in with 3 or 4 of them making whatever and using their still wage-earning parents as guarantors and taken it right out of the hands of people I think of as middle-class... like me. I've been seeing this over and over at every apartment I"ve looked at over the last few years.
93k would mean you'd qualify for an apartment that costs 2,300... pretty much a studio or 1br. Have fun being a family of 4 in that. As a renter with a family of 4 who sadly does not make over 200k, I will be forced to leave the city I've lived in for 25 years when my landlords decide to sell..
Would suggest the North Fork of LI for some vineyards. Great time of year to go out there. I can recommend some vineyards if you go as my wife's family has a house out there.Anyone have a good idea for a last minute weekend getaway from NYC to take with the wife? Not looking to break the bank and I can get a rental car, but not really trying to do the CT/AC casinos. Just looking for a change of pace for a night or two.
Oh and Rutgers has a bye this week so it's a good time to give her some extra attention.
That was actually my first thought as well. Would be great to hear some suggestions as I know virtually nothing about the area. Thanks.Would suggest the North Fork of LI for some vineyards. I really like the vineyard ideas and would do that but there is so much to do in general for a weekend. New Hope, PA is about an hour and a half drive from NYC and is a nice, vacation type of town to visit for a weekend. You can also take a train to Philly or Boston or DC. You can have a great weekend at any of those places, but I really like the vineyard and winery ideas.Raphael Wineries has a very large tasting selection and a beautiful building with both an upper and lower deck overlooking the vineyards. Bedell winery has some solid wines - it was featured at the last Presidential Inauguration.
You should definitely check out the Village of Greenport - they have some festivals running just about every weekend throughout the fall. Great walkable downtown experience for a few hours or a day.
You also have the Tanger Outlet malls, essentially on the way there / back in Riverhead if you are interested. Maybe get some holiday shopping in before you head back on Sunday - not a quaint escapade, but perhaps worthwhile.
Not sure how much you are looking to spend to stay but probably the nicest places in the area are the North Fork Table & Inn in Southold, the Harborfront in Greenport and Jedediah hawkins in Jamesport. There are also a lot of good bed and breakfasts in the area and Trip Advisor has a ton of reviews. The Greenporter is a decent mid-priced hotel in Greenport. Also, a few larger chains in Riverhead while cheaper the location sucks and wil feel less like a getaway. That was actually my first thought as well. Greenport is a cute little town as well with boutiques, bakeries, etc.. so there a few other things to do then just hit up the vineyards.I really like the vineyard ideas and would do that but there is so much to do in general for a weekend. Montauk all day, sonThis is all great stuff guys. I may not be able to pull this off in time for this weekend, but have taken notes for the future.
Yeah, I have seen them implement that rule before but never been rude about it. That sucks and can really ruin the time. To be honest, I usually run in and grab a bottle or two and go. With three kids I don't have much time for tasting. Koya, next time you go you should really try Paumanok as it is my favorite. It is one of the closets vineyards to riverhead so if you are dring from the exit 37/39 it is probably less than an hour from your home.Shin has been very highly recommended to us, however this past weekend we went there and one of the couples travelling with us brought their two children. Shin's rule is EVERY child must have a DEDICATED adult, so if you are a couple with two children, doesnt matter if one of you doesn't drink at all, you won't be allowed to taste. Now, they are entitled to make their own rules, but were rather snippy about it. Was a nice spot, however.
I recall enjoying Leib and Lenz, especially Lenz.
Wave to me when you are at exit 37-39 on the LIE. While on that subject, and assuming you are taking a car (there is LIRR service to Greenport, but if you want to do wineries, youll need transportation - although there are tours if you want which would eliminate the need for a car if you stayed in Greenport as well), I'd suggest scooting up to 25A/Shore Road using Edwards Avenue, rather than go through Riverhead - if its traffic time you will probably save some time and at the least its a much more pleasant final 45-60 min of the drive.
Battery Park City too^pinkydapimp may know.....that cat lives in NJ. I know there is a little ferry boat that will drop you off in the Wall St. area for WTC.
I remember Merc back in the day...fun spot for Soho. There was another small exclusive club near Felix on Grand St. as well...maybe it was Broome. Want to say it started with a V. That spot and Chaos really led the way to the bottle service mania that took over night life. After 20 years, it was the last night of Mercbar... sniff.
Got the word late in the afternoon, went by and caught a ton of old staff and old friends. I figured that place was the vampire walking dead of bars; after the apocolypse, there would be a bunch of smart cockroaches and that bar..I was wrong.
Hey GB - let's get together while you are here, even if it's just for coffee or lunch.I'm sure you'll get good suggestions here, and you're welcome to message me here or in FB.Been following this thread off and on over the years, and I finally have a need to pose a question.
Finally, my wife and I are taking our kids (10 and 8) to NYC this year for the Christmas season to see the sites and lights. We have waited simply because we wanted them to be old enough and responsible enough to be able to explore a little bit, but not be overly concerned with them wandering off. Everyone is excited to go and see the sites and walk around Manhattan some.
We have decided to drive up from PA and plan on catching a ferry on the Jersey side and taking it into the city. Had originally thought about taking a tour bus up, but we don't want to be completely tied to the tour group's schedule (leaving PA at 7am and leaving NYC at 7pm). Maybe we want to stay longer or maybe the kids get tired early and we can leave when we want.
My question is is there a better ferry port to go to on the Jersey side? Is there a better port on Manhattan to go into? Haven't really set an itinerary yet, but thinking we may take one of the island cruises around Manhattan so we can see the Statue and at least some of the other sites from the water. I know my wife and I would like to get down and see the Freedom Tower. Also, the kids have said they want to go up to the observation deck of the Empire State Building. The rest of the trip will just be exploring.
Any thoughts a potential itinerary?
seems like sticks and stems would do the trick...check for empty baggies.Damnedest thing...my daughter was given a caterpillar at a birthday party. Well he's been in the crysalis for 10 days and he popped out tonight. Monarch. So I give him some overripe fruit and 4:1 sugar water. But he can't balance on the Petrie dish to drink. So I'm stumbling around 43rd street at 1 a.m. trying to find twig. Just one ####### twig. Is that too much to ask?
F'n Disneyworld City is just a little TOO pristine sometimes.

Ellis Island over LibertyHeading to New York for the first time next week. Completely doing the tourist thing, but I promise I'll try to stay out of the way Otis! Any suggestions (other than the typical Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Met, etc.)? We will be staying the Madison Square Garden area for a couple of nights and Times Square for a couple. Car service, taxi or train to get to the hotel from the Newark airport?

You're going to regret not taking a car service or taxi from the airport unless you're packing light. Up and Down the stairs with bags, tons of impatient people on every side, crowded, getting off at wrong side of subway station, lugging bags down crowded sidewalk, etc. I only do it if I have a backpack and not the type of welcoming to NYC you and your wife probably want. Live and little and pay the extra cash. It's worth it. If you're cheap, take the private bus ($12-15) and it'll drop you off outside of Port Authority or Penn. Thanks!Ellis Island over LibertyHeading to New York for the first time next week. I was leaning car service, but the hotel is really close to Penn Station so I didn't know about the train option.
Just to update on all the #####ing about hotel prices in NYC, we ended up booking the Wyndham Garden Chinatown (through Priceline) for under 180/night. It's not quite central, but probably a decent area to be at the end of the night from what I've read, the tripadvisor reviews on it are fantastic (92% approved, top 50 in all of NYC), getting excited!Or just get a hotel in Albany and take the train down.

Any tips for food/entertainment nearby? I was with my son on that trip so can't help much with the nightlife. ohmyrockness.com has band listings for the clubs in the LES and Brooklyn.Northern Voice said:Any tips for food/entertainment nearby? I'm a runner so I planned out a rock run around the neighborhood. I was able to hit the former CBGB's, the brownstone from the Physical Graffiti cover, the Joe Strummer mural near Tompkins Sq. and the site of Paul's Boutique in about a 4 mile loop.
Sounds like a good price, probably a little over $200 a night after taxes and fees I assume, plus it probably has an elevatorNorthern Voice said:Just to update on all the #####ing about hotel prices in NYC, we ended up booking the Wyndham Garden Chinatown (through Priceline) for under 180/night. As long as you admit your mistakes for making a big stink in here that decent hotels can't be found for that price in downtown manhattan. I told you I do it regularly as do other FBGs. So long as it is near the subways, that's all that counts.
There were other hotels for similar/slightly more that were closer to Manhattan - Murray Hill East Suites, The Milford, Washington Jefferson, but all got pretty mixed reviews. We gave up a little on location (maybe) for what looks like a nicer hotel, and I'm told it's near 3 different subway stations, depending which line we need.Sounds like a good price, probably a little over $200 a night after taxes and fees I assume, plus it probably has an elevatorNorthern Voice said:Just to update on all the #####ing about hotel prices in NYC, we ended up booking the Wyndham Garden Chinatown (through Priceline) for under 180/night. Wow. Can you be any bigger of a weener? You are the one that challenged me when I offered a place to stay for $140 a night all in, you said the neighborhood was littered with hookers 10 YEARS AGO, then you went on to claim there were plenty of places for $150 a night. Not only did Northern Voice refute your claim of plenty of places to stay for $150 a night in the same neighborhood, but he posts that he managed to find a hotel for $180 a night from priceline which I'm pretty sure is the pre-hotel-fee, pre-tax price, bringing it to $200+ a night in a less desirable neighborhood and you try to claim victory and tell me to each crow #####? I concur. It was worthwhile just to be called a :weener: in a public forum.Guys, take the dooshy, trying to one up each other and show how great you are shtick to the Jersey thread, where it belongs. It's not becoming of real NYers.

you could always go for that roach motel JoJo The Circus Boy recommended early for $150/night but I think you'll be fine in a 4 star for that nominal amount.
