Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (2 Viewers)

I just called in and asked them first about the receivers freezing last weekend and making sure that was fixed. Then asked them to look at my long history with DTV, ten years of ST and 4-5 of Center Ice and asked that since newcomers are getting ST free if they can do anything for a longtime customer. I also added that since I am on disability for the year I may not me able to afford all the programming I usually get (all true, though I will still probably tone it down anyway). That's it, no threats, no lies, no customer retention stuff and she came back with a bunch of $5-$10 discounts on this and that which add up to $75 off each month for the next 4 months. So, essentially getting ST for free.

Just called...first time in five years as a customer. I guess I did OK:

Free Sunday Ticket

Free HD-DVR Upgrade (will move the HD box to the other room and ship the standard box :bag: back free of charge)

Free DVR for 12 months ($84 credit)

Free DirecTV On Demand

Free Cinema Connection Kit

Told to call back when ST expires for additional discounts. Does this sound like I did well?

Something about hooking my box to my wireless router and being able to download 6000 shows and movies. I need to Google it. Supposedly it was a $99 value for free.

I looked it up too. I think it's a scam overhyped item. I just pluged an ethernet cable into the DVR. I guess maybe if you want it wireless you'd need it but I don't mind it being hardwired since I already have a line going back there. I'm going to double check that I have the connectivity but I'm pretty sure I got all that set up when I got a new DVR earlier this year.

Any recent deals for existing customers? I've been a customer for over 10yrs and this is the first time I've called them for anything. Called tonight because my receiver keeps freezing up and basically was told that it's on the outs. Asked about upgrading from DVR to HD DVR and best they could do was free HD DVR and installation and free HD for 3 months. Doesn't seem on par with some of the other deals that I've seen folks here getting. Would I be better off calling back and asking for the retention department?

you have to say cancelget retentionsay you are cancelling due to pricing is too highother people and new customers are getting great deals I was really ready to cancel this year. But, they gave me a great deal. If you have been a customer for 10 years tell them you got an offer from DISH or your local provider for 50 bucks a month. I bet they match it for a limited time anyway. Tell them your neighbor/buddy/coworker just signed up for Directv and got free HD for life, NFL Sunday ticket, premium package for cheap and you are pissed. You feel like being a loyal customer for this many years and paying this high of a monthly fee is ridiculous, you want an adjustment on your bill or you cancel. Post back here with your savings.

It's that time of year again, making the call, will post results

10 year customer here. Called last night to get the upgraded HD-DVR and HD receivers that DTV is offering to new customers. The receivers would replace my 2 standard receivers. The idea was to get the Whole Home DVR service, which is $3/mth. Went through the front line CSR and he wasn't able to do anything. I asked to be transferred to Customer Retention, and they took care of everything. I got:

- free HD-DVR and HD receivers

- free installation

- waived $99 fee to start up Whole Home DVR

Took about 30 minutes to save appx. $420.

Good lord. I tried this exact same thing at the beginning of the year. They would do NOTHING for me, and I was a 10 year customer. So I cancelled. They keep calling every few months to get me back. F them.

It would be a big deal if it allowed whole home DVR AND on-demand. I currently have whole home DVR but can't get on demand unless I go unplug the ethernet cable for whole home and plug in an ethernet from my router to download the on-demand. I basically lost on-demand to get the whole home dvr.

I have the whole home DVR thingy AND the DirecTV Cinema (the on Demand thingy). Theres no ethernet cable to either of my DVRs, the Demand thingy is wireless. I think its cuz I got the newest style of boxes...my gf got DTV a few months ago and hers has to be hard wired as well, so maybe you should ask to upgrade to the newest boxes. The only cables going to my main box are power cord, a coax cable, and the HDMI cable that runs to my TV. In the bedroom its the same. I have a small box about the size of a pack of cigarettes that hooks to my router and also has a coax cable running to it from outside for the DirecTv Cinema.ETA: I just got DTV hooked up last week so Im sure I have the latest equipment.

I have 4 of the wireless boxes, the problem is with the HD-DVR's, they need a hard wire connection. Do you have wireless HD-DVR's?

I'm thinking of moving from cable to DTV. As a new customer, is there wiggle room to negotiate anything up front beyond what is already a pretty solid first year discount? Perhaps waiving the $99 for the HD-DVR?

As a new customer, all equipment will be free (dish, DVRs, router, etc.) If you enroll in the auto pay, HD will be free (otherwise its $10 per month).Just call them and see what they offer. If they want to charge you for ANYTHING, tell them no thanks and either ask for free equipment or call back and talk to another CSR.

Don't know if you guys solved this or not, but there is an additional piece of equipment that is needed in order for you to get Whole home and on demand at the same time without switching out the cables. I had to have them come install this additional equipment that is a small box that sits between the HDDVR and the modem and cable wire. Not sure what it is called and it took 3 calls to the help desk in order to get someone that knew about this equipment.

Bumping this for my experience.

Slow day at work, and I've seen a ton of commercials for Dish's new "Hopper" DVR, so I figured it might be a good time to try and call. I basically asked just for contract end date (next Feb) and early termination ($200). Girl on the phone asked why I was asking, and I basically said I could get Dish for less now that my promo stuff ran out. She asked what channels I watched, and I told her, being sure to add a few that I knew were in the premium packages (Speed Network for one i.e. so they can't down-sell me to save $). She did some looking and came back and just offered me 2 choices: 6 months DVR for free ($8/mos) plus either $20 off for 6 months, or $10 for 24 months. She said that neither extended my contract or changed my package. So...I took the $20/6 and will just call back at some point after that runs out and try the same deal!

So I saved $28/mos for 6 months with no extended obligation. I'll take that.

Just sharing. I think Dish's recent ad boom with the Hopper might be a good opportunity to call and renegotiate. Dish's savings are ~$30-40/mos on the promo, so if you've still got a good bit of time on your contract, you can make a pitch to the sales rep that the savings covers the ETF fee. This will get them talking to you re. savings despite being under contract.

Yeah, I hate having to call in all the time after the first year in order to get a decent rate. It's all a big game where you're only rewarded if you whine consistently. Not a fan at all. A good customer shouldn't have to call and whine all the time in order to get solid deals.

After moving on from DirecTV, I looked hard at Dish Network. I tried chatting online and via email with their reps to lock in a specific deal for two full years (life of the contract), but they wouldn't budge on their pre-packaged stuff (and rates). They kept coming back with the same offer repeatedly when I said I had no interest in such an offer. Oh well. -I knew I didn't have to play their game since I already had an antenna installed on my rooftop. While it's been an adjustment, I'm fine with only having the major networks and some other stuff like ION TV... since it's all free.

I'm usually a decent negotiator but for some reason I absolutely crumble when I call DirecTV. I practically end up begging them to charge me more.

been with DTV since 95. i get all channels. my bill was up to $171. I called and told them I was looking at comcast and dish( i really wasn't). they got my bill down to $117, happy with that. they will work with you

This is supposed to be a good deal?

If you don't want to haggle on the price, you can ask if they have any promotions going on. They tell you what they are, you tell them to add them to your account and voila. Rinse and repeat 3 months later. If you want that extra stuff and you don't already get it, that is.

For all the channels, it is pretty good.

Just got my bill dropped down to $94 from $130 by calling their 800 number and saying cancel when prompted twice. Told their retention specialist that I liked their service but felt like my bill was getting too high. Fabricated an offer from an unnamed competitor that allowed me to have all of the same channels that were important to me as well as one of the premium movie channels for around $80. Pulled that number out of thin air. She noted that I was paying $15.99 a month for HBO and asked if HBO was vital to me. I told her I just liked having one of the premiums for commercial free movies but it didn't matter which one. She gave me Showtime and all of its sub channels (10 in all) free for a year at which time I'll renegotiate. She threw in a random $20 monthly discount with the free Showtime and waived some other monthly fees to bring me down to the total of $93.98.

Less than 10 minutes and it was a piece of cake.

Has anyone negotiated with DIRECTV since these channels are no longer available MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1, Spike, BET and Comedy Central?

On its own page, Viacom took a bit of a cheap shot Wednesday afternoon, posting an image of Nickelodeon cartoon favorite SpongeBob SquarePants with this text:

"Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? I don't know. I have DirecTV."

A year and a half later dtv is still up my ### with a letter and at least 2 emails a week begging me to come back. They'll get their chance next March when my contract is up but I'm not optimistic.

My first year is up and the price spiked. Can you try and renogiate now with still a year left or do you need to wait until closer to the expiration?

I was with DirecTV since 1999, but got rid of it two months ago. Instead we stream Netflix to our TVs for $8 a month, and have a Tivo connected to an over the air antenna for $15 a month. Total is $23 a month, and we still have well more than we could ever watch on the tube in a month. We don't miss DirecTV at all, or cable for than matter.

Woah, when did this happen?!?!?! Couldnt give a #### less about most of those, but Comedy Central?W.T.F.
http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/telecom/story/2012-07-11/DirecTV-Viacom-channels/56149394/1
So its most likely temporary. Also: To appease viewers, DirecTV is making eight Encore movie channels (usually available in only the higher-price subscription tiers) viewable for free on channels 535-542 until July 31.

Called them today threatening to cancel. Said I got an earful from my wife when the channels the kids watched disappeared.Ended up with Starz & Showtime free for 6 months & free NFL Sunday Ticket this year.

Ooooh, this could be a good bargaining chip for getting Sunday Ticket cheap. Strike while the iron is hot, folks.ETA: This can be especially useful for those still under contract like myself. Im gonna call them tomorrow and see if I can swing something..

Didn't know about the Viacom stuff, but here is a copy of my post in the SP thread yesterday:

Just made my annual call, and I'm pretty sure this is the best result with the least BS that I've ever had.

Said "cancel service" at the initial prompt, and then "cancel service" at the 2nd prompt.

Got the guy on the phone & told him that I noticed my bill had been going up recently (previous credits had been expiring), and that I was looking for a way to get it back down & to also get the Sunday Ticket Max if the numbers worked. He asked what monthly number I was looking at getting to, & I said I'd like it in the low 70s/month (only 1 receiver, HD w/DVR, plus HBO).

He started asking me which channels I watched & started to go down the road of getting a lesser package to save $$. I told him although I basically only watched HBO, I still liked having the other channels available, and was more interested in getting to a lower number with credits, as they had been able to do for me in the past.

He said he'd check out what he could do, acknowledged my history with them since August of 2003 (almost 9 years), and my payment history (always pay on time, etc.), and said that they appreciate how I've been a loyal customer, and that he was able to offer me $20/mo for 12 mos off my existing package ($240), and ST for free ($199), with an agreement to stay with Direct TV for 1 year. I thanked him for that offer and explained that I actually needed the MAX package with the Red Zone & To Go option, since I often need to see games remotely & always stream the Red Zone while watching the Browns game.

He said I could add the MAX package for $100, in 4 payments of $25. I asked him if there was anything he could do to offset that charge with a 1 time credit, and he said that he couldn't do anything for that. I then noted that a $8/month credit for my DVR had recently dropped off, & asked if there was any way I could get that renewed for a year, and that if he could do that, it would seal the deal.

He checked it out, again acknowledged my 9 year history as a customer who paid on time & said he could get that credit reinstated for 1 year ($96).

I thanked him & said "let's get it set up then". I then asked him how long I was under contract for (until 7/10/13), and asked him how long I had been under contract for (7/19/13) - knowing already that I was under contract for about 1 year anyway.

So, net result =

no contract extension (since I was already under contract)

$240 off bill ($20/mo for 1 year)

$96 off bill ($8/mo for 1 year)

Free Sunday Ticket basic (not auto renew) ($199 value)

I pay $100 one time payment for MAX upgrade

Boils down to FREE Sunday Ticket MAX + $236 off my bill over the next year, or $535 value for a 20 minute call. I already have a $5 month credit for 24 months that runs through the duration of my contract, and I'm halfway through free showtime for 1 year - all of which remains intact.

Also, the only time I said I was going to cancel my service was at the 2 prompts - never mentioned Dish or cable or anything else, just asked for what I wanted.

A bit of a pain to have to make the call every year, but definitely worth the trouble.

:banned:

Edit: after that 1 time charge, my bill will be about $70/mo for the remainder of contract, with all credits expiring on 7/28/13. :moneybag:

This crap with Viacom is BS. I am pretty pissed. The dooshbag CEO of Directv trying to sell me on how we wont miss the channels because it is just reruns just pisses me off worse.

Now they are giving us the worst movie package as a credit to make us happy? Garbage.

What kind of line did you use going from losing kids channels to getting NFL ticket for free?

Just got off the phone and here's what I got 35 dollars off my bill for the next year. A 50.00 credit added to my bill. Sunday ticket max for 50% off. And a 200 dollar whole home dvr plus cinema connection kit for free. It took me all the way to the retention department and 3 representatives but finally Tammy from the retention department hooked me up!!!!! She said I can give u 10 dollars off a month. I said no thanks come get my equipment. She said 30 dollars off a month I said give me free Sunday ticket and u got a deal I settled for the 50% off Sunday ticket max in case I gotta watch my game from my phone. Then she threw in the whole home dvr and connection kit. Good luck everyone!

What's funny is he said in the recorded message before the channels went dark that "Viacom won't allow us to pick and choose the channels we want, it's all or nothing." Seriously? Look in the mirror pal. Viewers have been asking for a la carte for a long time. I'd get rid of 90% of the channels.

My son was complaining about Nick but no Comedy Central??!!!!! WTMF??!! Heads are going to roll!!!!
I was pretty pissed when I came back from vacation and saw that Stewart and Colbert were on break...again. Now, not so much. Hope this gets fixed before they get back though.

Got a $25 a month credit for 12 months. :moneybag:

BTW

If you are hanging up and calling back, they are keeping notes on your previous conversations.

I got Sunday Ticket max for free, Showtime for one year, starz for 6 months, and $10 off for a year.

I just need to remember to cancel Sunday Ticket at the end of the year or it automatically renews. Thank you Viacom!
