Ran a 10k - Official Thread (11 Viewers)

I think I need to find a fall half. I've been running around 13 miles every Saturday for a while, so may as well do it at a race to break up the monotony.

Not necessarily in race shape, so would treat it more like a fast training run with other people to look at.

Since the intervals were supposed to be at 5K pace, the race is the much harder workout.  I agree you shouldn't do both.  Do the race if your ankle feels up to it.  It might be a good time to really test yourself since your heart rate data is good.

Would you actually find a last minute race or would you just "race" around the neighborhood?
yeah, it would be a solo race...But thats what I'm leaning toward.  Haven't had a good 5k run in a long time.

I know one coming up in a week less than 4 hours away from you.

December half along the beach in Delaware?  Think it’s december 8 so not fall I guess.

I started looking at the forecast for next week.  We're up to 90 again in the middle of the week.  But, so far, thankfully, it cools down for Sunday morning.  That far out, though, who knows, and it's a little disconcerting to see those temps throughout the week with it only dropping a couple days before. :loco:

Ever had a conversation similar to this?

"Have any plans this weekend?"

"I have a race tomorrow."

"How long?"

"Five miles."

"Just five miles?  Oh, that should be easy for you."
All the time.  Our university sponsors a local 5K, and a lot of people here say exactly that ..."easy for you."  They don't realize how focused/stressed/nervous I am for the week before a race, knowing the effort/pain it will take to succeed.

Fixed

The version I usually hear is more along the lines of the other person saying "I only run halfs/marathons", and I always respond "there's no 'only' about that, I don't run those because you have to run too hard."

Friday - 15 (first 10 @745-800 730-740, last 5 @700-710 650ish)
Soooo....Coach emailed me on Wednesday morning and said he wanted this one a little faster since I ended up not racing the half last weekend.

Headed out this morning and got 'er done (and then some).  Averaged 7:15 for the first 10...and 6:39 for the last 5.  My last mile would've easily been my fastest, but my right hamstring started to seize up on me towards the end of mile #14, and I had to back off the pace a bit to avoid disaster.

Feeling really fit right now.  Going to see a myofascial release therapist at 11:30 to get some work done on the hammy, then I just need to make it through an easy 9-miler tomorrow morning before a much-needed rest on Sunday.

Yep, big fan of the late in the training cycle back-to-back too.  Do the speed to tire you out then do the long run on tired legs.  I have my wife doing it Saturday-Sunday, 10 at MP then the final 20 Sunday.  I could tell from the look in her eye from across the room when we were setting this week's schedule that when I had her document those two workouts that if she had something sharp in her hand and was within arm's reach she'd be stabbing me in the eye right now.  This is why I sat on the other side of the room though.
Done -- 90 minutes.

Felt good today and essentially no perceptible fatigue from yesterday's tempo run. I even kept my HR in the 140's for almost the entire run while running under 10:00 min pace.

Just going to dial the volume back this week, get one pace workout, probably Monday, one more speed workout on Wednesday and enjoy getting the legs fresh.

One week out...ready to get this thing @SFBayDuck?!
Not as ready as I'd like, but as ready as I'm going to be.  I got a couple of good peak weeks in between AC100 and now.  Wish I had more time to practice with trekking poles.  I'll spend Sunday prepping drop bags and gear and figuring out how to pack for the flight out on Thursday morning.

It looks like the weather should be decent, lows in the mid 50s (I'm sure colder up on the ridges) and highs in the low 70s.  80% humidity on Saturday and I'm sure I'll be feeling that a bit.  Hopefully that forecast holds as it looks like chances of rain go up on Sunday.

It's going to be a long, slow slog.  I don't plan on using all 38 hours of the cutoff, but nice to know I have that long to get it done if I need it.  But let's call the goal 32ish hours, which would have me finishing around 2:00 AM Sunday.  I just don't have any idea what to expect not having run out on the Beast Coast and not having started a race in the evening, so it's going to be an adventure.

Ok so obviously runners get to know the people in their neighborhood better than most.

So i have become aware of a house that i know for a fact when they walk their dog, they dont pick up the poop. I was aware of the poop i just never knew where they lived. Saw the guy with the dog getting the mail on his way back from his walk so i watched him closely to see what house he went into.

I am also aware of a house where i know the guy smokes and flicks his cigarette butts out the window. He does it like one block from his house which just really chaps me.

Thoughts? Ideas?
Burn their houses down down?

60 here today, overcast, cool breeze, occasional drizzle. Absolutely perfect.

It’s Michigan though, so in a couple weeks I will be whining and before long I’ll just be staying inside.

Seems like I'm very frequently on the brink of "is pushing X miles today gonna #### up my leg?".  My 6.5 miles on Tuesday caused some minor strain Tuesday into Wed, so I took it easy on my 4 miles yesterday.  Happy to report that things are in good shape heading into weekend so i can have a long run tomorrow and likely tear up that hammy!

Man I love days like today.

47 degrees at 5am. Knocked out 13.4 miles like it was nothing. Just one of those nice smooth runs where you feel like you can run all day. Finished up with plenty left in the tank, legs and body also strong.

And I'll be damned - I've been running for 6 years and NEVER found any money on the ground other than the occasional penny or nickel. Found TWO $1 bills today - both at separate locations. So I earned two bucks for my effort. :headbang:

Then to the farmers market. Got my normal supplies, and walked by the booth where the high school school district culinary students were selling cinnamon rolls, croissants, etc. As I was walking by, I overheard someone say "we also have breakfast burritos."

I literally stopped in my tracks, turned around, and bought this awesome breakfast burrito with ham, sausage, eggs, green peppers, onions, a little spice....etc.....

Sat down in the courtyard - no kids by the way - and ate this awesome hot breakfast burrito on a cool 47 degree morning. 13.4 miles in my pocket. Glorious.

Just needs a good Zwickel....

Fuxt Juxt, freaking phenomenal man.

Here I was feeling all good on a 4th overall, 1st AG in the duathlon. Then I see you and damn you're impressive.

I'm somewhat more impressed by your first mile, sub 6, sub 140 bpm than the total but both show how much work you've put in. It's great to see it pay off.

Thanks! However, it looks like my heart rate wasn’t measuring right at the beginning. My true average for the first mile probably was about 150.

I found a wallet on the ground this morning with $100 in it!  I won’t say I wasn’t tempted, but I do believe in karma so I turned it in at the police station (address on drivers license was a town an hour away).

Harvest Fest DG (Downers Grove) 5-Miler Race Report

This is the only 5-mile race I’ve ever run. It’s held in the town I live in and on streets I’ve trained on.  They say it’s in its 41st year. I ran it in 2012 (with @tri-man 47), 2013, 2014, 2015, and kind of in 2016 (bailed after first mile -- I don't think I ever told you guys about that).  In those years it was a decent sized, competitive race. For example, when I set my PR in 2015 of 30:32 I finished 23rd of 453 runners.  However, starting last year, they moved it from the end of June back to the end of September, added a 8-mile option, and changed the course.  I ran the 8-mile option last year and ran pretty well. Attendance was way down. This year was even worse. Only 77 finishers in the 5-miler and 63 in the 8-miler.  I know it’s hard to be economically feasible with those numbers and I’m afraid it won’t be around next year.

Anyway, I’ve been running well this year and knew I should be able to set a new PR.  My goal was to finish under 30:00 and the calculators told me I should be able to based on the 5K I ran earlier this month.  However, I’m never confident. That wasn’t helped by struggling through a 5-mile tempo run a week and a half ago. I knew my legs weren’t fresh then though so I made sure to cut back on mileage this week running only 6, 5, and 4 miles Wednesday through yesterday.

Weather was perfect.  Mid 40s with clear skies.  Forecast said a 4 mph wind but, thinking back, I have no memory of a wind whatsoever.

Race started at 7:30.  I ran a 2-mile warm up at 5:45.  I would have liked to run it even earlier but I chose sleep instead.  I’m glad I stumbled across an article recommending early warm ups. I think it really helps me compared to warming up within an hour of the race.

With the sparse turn out, I toed the starting line.  Bib color told us who who was running the 5 and who was running the 8.  The only people I knew were fast or even looked fast were running the 8.  I knew I won before the first step.

Mile 1: 5:55

I was in first from the start.  I didn’t have a huge lead but when I looked back I only saw 8-mile runners.  I’ve won a few other races before and for some reason I really like the police escort.  There are some rolling hills on this mile which messed with effort level but I think I did a good job of not running too fast too early.

Mile 2: 5:57

I didn’t see anyone when I glanced back a few times so I was alone other than the escort.  I probably had the most doubt in this mile though. The biggest hill was shortly before the 1.5 mile point and my average lap pace (lap being every mile) slipped to about 6:10.  I didn’t want to start having any miles over 6:00 so I had to hustle to get in under by the end of the mile.

Mile 3: 5:51

It really helped that the beginning of this mile is on the biggest downhill of the course.  I kind of “fell” down that hill averaging 5:30 pace and that gave me some cushion for the rest of the mile.  There’s not much else to mention to you guys at this point. I’m just trying to continue on. One thing that I think is weird is that when I’m training, my mind is always very active.  I daydream. I really focus in on music. I think though issues at work. Or I think about Bulls lineups, politics, whatever. When I race though, my mind is pretty much blank. I don’t remember thinking about anything other than the occasional thought about pace or how I’m feeling.

MIle 4: 5:49

This ended up being my best mile and I remember being surprised I was running so fast.  My calves were getting really sore though. Other than that, it wasn’t so bad.

Mile 5: 5:52 + some extra seconds of Garmin time

There were a couple hills on the last mile which made things tough but I felt pretty good considering.  I always knew that I could hold pace this mile.

Final result: 29:40.  1 out of 77 overall.

Second pace didn't finish until 33:59.

I have no idea when I’ll ever run another 5-mile race so it’s nice to have this one in the books.  Calves are still really sore as I write this. This has happened before and I think I’ll be OK in a few days.  I was planning on running 15 miles or more tomorrow but will probably have to cut that way down.
