Clipping nails at work (1 Viewer)

Once the nail clipping offender has been informed that someone in the office decided involving management was their choice of problem solving, the offender is likely to engage in their own passive aggressive behavior to retaliate. Expect the consumption of lots of vegetables, especially beans, along with eggs.... and let the silent but deadly egg fart office party begin.

HR guy here.  These are precisely the type of complaints that I hate, but are completely appropriate to report.  Have your own office?  Great. Clip nails, floss, watch porn, whatever.  If you are around other coworkers, do your job and nothing else until you become indispensable enough to have your own office. I will do whatever I can to keep the complainers out of my office.

say, that reminds me- when the notices advising how to properly wash your hands were taken down in each bathroom, I had to relearn everything. lots of time lost standing in front of the sink and just looking at my hands.

This ineptitude is precisely what keeps me from paying my architect's bills.

Well the performance review came and went and I said nothing to him.   If the complainer is that bothered then eventually he/she (most likely a she) will tell the guy that it is a distraction.

In my office the AVP or manager would send an email to everyone in the dept about how anything hygiene related should be done in the bathroom.

Then my coworkers and I would spend the rest of the day conversing about what the hell happened to cause that email.  BAU.
In my office we get a facilities email once every few weeks begging women to stop flushing hygiene products but people keep doing it. The most recent email added, "This has become a major cost and a serious inconvenience." Everyone on my floor is at least 30 and has a JD. My money's on the lady who won't touch anything in the kitchen without using a folded paper towel barrier. Point being, I'm sure whatever happened was super terrible and we're all probably better off not knowing.

What's a JD???

To the office clippers here, honest question: What's the reason/logic for clipping at work? You couldn't find 2 minutes at home to do it? Are you just like hmmm, I think I'll take me nail clippers to work today and then non-chalantly slide them into your pocket? Like what's the motivation here?
for a while i didn't own a pair of nail clippers and would ask my boss to borrow his.

i now have my own but i keep them at work because i like the convenience.

i used to work on a trading desk with other people and one of the guys flipped out that i was clipping them at the desk.

i realize this all may be a bit overwhelming for some.

WTF?  Clippers are like $2.  I think the worst part of this is borrowing clippers from your boss.

I brush my teeth and floss at my desk. I just use a bit of water from my cup and when I'm done I spit into my trash can. Few raps on the edge of the can and brush and paste go back into a gallon ziploc bag and into my 2nd drawer. Got to have that breath clean.

I have three people in my office that I'd you like to speak with - I can't imagine the last time their mouths saw a toothbrush given the incredible funk that rides the air whenever they speak.

Come on man, do that stuff in the bathroom yo

We can't seem to keep people from pouring lemon seeds down the drain for the bubbler.  You win.

A coworker has made it known to me that some people in the office are bothered by the sound of an employee that is clipping his nails at his desk.   This employee is a member of my staff and I am in the midst of doing job performance reviews and doing his this afternoon.

Obviously this has nothing to do with his performance (which is excellent) but I am wondering if I should mention this to him as his manager or let the people that are bothered with it either tell him or go to HR.

I'm thinking I should let him know but what's the FFA say?
Tell him to groom himself on his own time

Absolutely tell him to stop.

Gross.

There's a guy in my office that flosses uses one of the floss pick things while talking to you. ####### awful.

There's a guy in my office who brushes at lunch in the bathroom.  He takes a paper towel and lays it out with his brush, toothpaste, and floss next to the sink.  He's in there a while, but leaves his disgusting paper towel with used floss on it behind.  Too nasty for him to touch afterwards I guess.  WTF?

I love hearing someone from HR telling you to watch porn in your office.

Just saw it in my office of 20 people. A guy. I've done it too. Big deal. This post during company time is a big deal.

Do you have a bonus or other compensation plan? Argue all you like.  The reality is sometimes managers get no credit for the tough decisions.  And you will get flack for shirking these kinds of office complaints.  It will effect productivity, loyalty, your reputation, etc.  And your variable comp.  Good luck.

There's probably an old thread somewhere that I remember starting after getting a new job in 2006. My new boss (in his late 50's) would repeatedly do this while we were meeting, one-on-one, in his office or if we were using his office during a conference call we were both on. No joke, I was always, and noticeably, dodging shrapnel and he never noticed/cared.

I worked with one of these guys, too! He would also turn his head and spit out onto the floor any little bits that the floss dislodged.

You sound like the guy who wipes boogers on the wall above urinals.
I never knew this was a thing until my current job. We had a Booger Banksy that was making a pattern with them on the wall next to the urinal. Or maybe it was being crowd sourced. But it went on for weeks because it seemed like the cleaning crew was refusing to do anything about it (probably because it was so disgusting.)

Finally, someone took a putty knife or something and scraped all the petrified boogers off. Now, the wall has a pattern of white blobs because the paint under each one also came off.

I clip my nails at work sometimes but I have my own office(basically my own half the building).
Many times I'm the only one in my small office. I'll clip them if no one else is around - but do it over a trash can.

If I split a nail, I'm trimming that bad boy right now, regardless of who is around.

He did the right thing by ignoring it. If he did something, it would set a precedent that complaining to management about even the most petty of issues is perfectly acceptable, which would of course open the flood gates of ridiculous petty complaints. It would turn the office into a circus. It would however make for a good sitcom.... oh wait, it already was.

When it comes to hygiene based complaints in the office where do we draw the line of what it is ok to tell management?

I don't think it's petty if it is legitimately affecting other employees.

Being a manager means having to have difficult decisions and also diffusing potential issues.  He doesn't have to name names or even say someone complained.  Something as simple as, "hey I noticed you clipping your nails multiple times here at work.  I know from experience this can be an annoyance to others so it's best that it be done at home.  Thanks for your understanding".

Being an employee means not behaving like a child. If someone does something that bothers you, be an adult and talk to them about it, instead of being a child and whining and complaining about it.

This may have been asked - but is there a specific rule he is violating by clipping his nails at his desk?

The problem is that I didn't notice him clipping his nails.  If it becomes a bigger issue then I'll handle then but I decided I'm not going to make it issue with one anonymous complaint.
