More from the same story:

Quote

Ms. Nielsen, who regularly found herself telling Mr. Trump why he couldn’t have what he wanted, was an obvious target. When the president demanded “flat black” paint on his border wall, she said it would cost an additional $1 million per mile. When he ordered wall construction sped up, she said they needed permission from property owners. Take the land, Mr. Trump would say, and let them sue us.

When Ms. Nielsen tried to get him to focus on something other than the border, the president grew impatient. During a briefing on the need for new legal authority to take down drones, Mr. Trump cut her off midsentence.

“Kirstjen, you didn’t hear me the first time, honey,” Mr. Trump said, according to two people familiar with the conversation. “Shoot ’em down. Sweetheart, just shoot ’em out of the sky, O.K.?”

Quote

On a trip to California late in the week, Mr. Trump turned to Mr. McAleenan, the Customs and Border Protection chief, with a new idea: He wanted him to stop letting migrants cross the border at all, with no exceptions. If you get into any trouble for it, Mr. Trump told him, I’ll pardon you.

Just the POTUS directing people to do illegal things including taking American's land.  No biggie.

I mean it as a complement, and am aware she lost her husband days ago. She’s bright, dedicated much of her life to service as an undercover spy, has a clear moral center, and has aged absolutely extraordinarily well.

3 hours ago, Sinn Fein said:

The man is certifiably NUTS:

WASHINGTON — The Oval Office meeting this past March began, as so many had, with President Trump fuming about migrants. But this time he had a solution. As White House advisers listened astonished, he ordered them to shut down the entire 2,000-mile border with Mexico — by noon the next day.

The advisers feared the president’s edict would trap American tourists in Mexico, strand children at schools on both sides of the border and create an economic meltdown in two countries. Yet they also knew how much the president’s zeal to stop immigration had sent him lurching for solutions, one more extreme than the next.

Privately, the president had often talked about fortifying a border wall with a water-filled trench, stocked with snakes or alligators, prompting aides to seek a cost estimate. He wanted the wall electrified, with spikes on top that could pierce human flesh. After publicly suggesting that soldiers shoot migrants if they threw rocks, the president backed off when his staff told him that was illegal. But later in a meeting, aides recalled, he suggested that they shoot migrants in the legs to slow them down. That’s not allowed either, they told him.

No worries, you won't hear from them.  I almost tagged a few of them about SF's post re: alligators and moats but then realized who the hell wants them mucking up the thread with bad talking points and flat-out lies?

I imagine the defense is to deny he ever said those things.  I'm pretty sure Trump has spent the past 60 plus years eating paste and even I have a bit of a problem finding this report credible.  This is straight up Dr. Evil sharks with lasers on their heads crazy.

Imagine that Trump reportedly wanting to nuke hurricanes to stop them ended up being the craziest anecdote about his presidency for approximately a month.  Next month we'll learn he wanted to enlist the Jedi to guard the border.

This is what I find so confusing about Trump.  He was born rich, and grew up rich.  He has spent his lifetime rubbing elbows with the rich and powerful in Manhattan.  He's been involved in pageantry and fashion.  So why on earth does he wear suits that look like the one my crazy uncle picked out at Good Will to wear, untailored, to my grandmother's funeral?  Why is he regularly powering down multiple McDonald's Filet-o-Fishes in a single sitting?  Why does he appear to be completely devoid of taste or class?  Whatever you think of his kids, his sons and Ivanka look the part.  Sharp, well-dressed. Probably don't eat Filet-o-Fish sandwiches.

Trump eats fast food because he has a theory that it's less likely to be poisoned.

I'm not even kidding.

He’s clearly reading intensely a speech written by some scrub, and a speech that Trump has no clue of its content. He’s essentially giving the President of Finland a rhetorical hand job. And he is adding the same ole fantastic Trump fills to the scripted speech, like a drummer sight-reading a competition piece.

He's always been devoid of taste and class by conventional measures. He's dreamed up his own take on taste and class, I don't think he knows otherwise. He has a pension for delusion and a complete lack of self-awareness that apply to all facets of his life. He's the prime modern example of what happens when no one can tell you "no" and get away with it.

I saw part of his press conference.  A reporter as the Finnish President if Trump asked him for any favors. Trump interrupted and said "I think you mean did he ask me for any favors" then went on about how he has accomplished more than any POTUS in history.

The dude is ate up.

Historians' view (plural) of the unprecedented actions of Trump ...and not in a good way.  Relevant to the impeachment thread (though the issue in the article is broader):

"In the history of American foreign relations, we are unaware of any prior case — in 230 years — of a president asking a foreign leader to intervene in American domestic politics."

You know how at the beginning of every disaster movie there is a scientist that tries to warn everybody yet nobody listens?

That’s how we historians have felt since 2015.

Fred Trump was rich, but he was a slumlord.  He didn't really travel in type of old money circles that set standards of taste and decorum.

Yeah, our President is basically Al Czervik/Thronton Mellon/<insert Rodney Dangerfield character here> without any intelligence or capacity for intentional humor. That's what people thought we needed in office.

We'd have been better off with the genuine Dangerfield in office - alive or dead.
