San Diego advice: 25th Anniversary (1 Viewer)

My wife and I will have been married for 25 years this July. Unfortunately, she is disabled and has been for the past 19 years. She is in severe pain constantly, and she is very restricted on mobility. Usually if we leave the house, she requires a wheelchair. Travel is very challenging, although we do go back to the East coast periodically (when she can do it) for her to get treatments.

Assuming we are constrained to no travel outside of driving range, I'm soliciting ideas for a special anniversary for her. She likes Celine Dion a lot, so I thought about a weekend in Vegas to see her show, but she isn't playing during the right timeframe. Given my wife's challenges, I don't know how much she could enjoy Vegas in general. So for now I have ruled that out.

Ideas could include a spa, or just a nice resort for a long weekend. Or even just recommended dinner spots or activities that she might enjoy. (We moved to San Diego a few years ago, but, given her limitations, we have not experienced much that San Diego has to offer together.) Or even out of the box gift ideas.

Appreciate any recommendations anyone might have.

I wouldn't give up on the Vegas idea. There are some absolutely huge resorts with great restaurants, spas, shows, shops, and gambling. You could spend and entire weekend and The MGM or Ceasar's Palace and most of those places are very wheelchair friendly. It might be nice to go somewhere away from home too.

Regarding San Diego, we vacation every year in La Jolla, but I'm not sure that would be good with her condition. If the beach is OK, La Jolla beach is awesome.

Congrats on the anniversary! We have our 25th in December.

A Day at the Races at Del Mar? Get a table for a great lunch- they have outside and inside. I'm not familiar with the wheelchair access but I know there are elevators and plenty of ramps. Check with the track.

ETA - Happy Anniversary

What date range are you thinking? There are a lot of great music venues in SD that might have something she would love.

Hot air balooning season has started, which can be absolutely stunning. You could leave from Del Mar and still make a show at the Belly Up.

These are great suggestions, thank you. The only thing so far that I don't think would work is hot air balloons -- I don't think she could handle that. I will definitely explore Vegas a bit more.

Much congratulations on the big anniversary.  I remember having beers w/JWB 6 years ago when (if memory serves me correctly) you were out here scouting for places to live (maybe?).  Anyways, JWB is good people.

I'd say go set up at a nice resort with a great spa for the weekend.  There are plenty of options between San Diego, OC, Palm Springs and Vegas.  All will be their own flavor, but you can definitely have a good time and have accommodations suitable for your wife.

This may be a silly suggestion(s) but I'm assuming that along with the physical disability she's got to be down in spirits -- can you arrange a visit to Sea World where she gets to wade in (the shallow end, with assistance) with dolphins? Similarly, again with assistance, what about horseback riding?

Just thinking about something that would lift her mood, and I've heard those 2 animals can be sensitive/uplifting to those that interact with them...

Congrats on your anniversary. I agree with others to not give up on Vegas. I've seen plenty of folks in wheelchairs/scooters enjoying Vegas so I think it's fairly accommodating. If she likes Celine Dion there will be big acts in Vegas she'd also enjoy. Vegas has the shows/restaurants/sights/spas to make it a special weekend.

In SD you can do a resort like Aviara or La Costa. Or day at Del Mar with Happy Anniversary thoughts on the big screen while you enjoy the races and restaurant.

Avoid Palm Springs in July.  Maybe a stay in Temecula with wine tasting?

The more I think about it Vegas still seems best. A big concert, Absinthe if she's into that kind of thing, great restaurants, table to watch Bellagio fountains at night, spa. etc

How about a resort in Sedona, Arizona?  There are some beautiful, tranquil places with great spas and such.  That can't be much further than Vegas from San Diego..

Thanks, GB. I was thinking about something similar (resort/spa).

Probably not horseback riding due to risk of a fall, but the dolphin idea is great. We haven't done that. It's on the list.

Yeah, Sedona is probably a great option for you JWB, if your wife can handle the travel.

I live in AZ and have a place in Prescott, AZ. If you like driving, the road from Prescott through Jerome, Cottonwood, and Sedona and all the way to Flagstaff is one of the most beautiful drives you will ever do. Both Prescott and Sedona would be awesome spots to chill out for a few days.

Our anniversary is on July 25, but we can celebrate before or afterwards, especially since that falls on a Tuesday.
Not a fan of Vegas or AZ that time of year. My BiL is paraplegic (30 years since the accident and going strong). They stay at the Hotel Del every fall for a long weekend away. She says it's the best special needs hotel on the west coast. They even have free fat tired powered chairs for "walking" on the beach (they show movies after dark on the beach and the chair is allowed). The spa is world reknowned updated in the last ten years. The proximity to the Zoo and Sea World is great and both parks will accommodate you nicely (you go in free if that matters for being her caretaker). A world class dinner high above the gaslamp district is nearby. If you haven't done your hometown yet, you probably should. It's America's Finest City.

The AZ we are talking about is Northern AZ which is 20-30 degrees cooler than Phoenix and in the pines and mountains. And the Vegas casinos have the best AC in the world...

fantastic suggestion.  Can do nice dinners, maybe a concert at Humphrey's, etc.
