Trent Williams...now I've heard everything (1 Viewer)

It’s damn tough to call anyone as inept as their front office, but this medical staff has ####ed up multiple players over the past few seasons, and badly.

Multiple surgeries for both Guice and Smith in addition to this debacle.
And for McCoy.

The Washington Post reports coach Ron Rivera is working to get LT Trent Williams to return to the team.

Williams sat out 2019 and had the remainder of his salary withheld when the Redskins placed him on NFI in November. He's said he'll "never" play for Washington again. It's possible Rivera's presence and Bruce Allen's firing could change things for Williams, but this is still a messy situation. The Redskins hired a new head athletic trainer in an effort to convince Williams to stay.

ESPN's John Keim reports the Redskins "remain hopeful" they can get a first-round pick for Trent Williams.

Williams asked to be extended or traded after meeting with Ron Rivera earlier this month. He's looking to be one of the highest paid tackles — something that seems unlikely to happen in Washington after Williams sat out all last year. There's no doubt Williams is one of the league's top pass blockers, but he's a twice-suspended 31-year-old that hasn't played a full season since 2013. Williams trade talks should heat up after the Combine.

ESPN's Dianna Russini reports the Redskins have granted LT Trent Williams permission to seek a trade.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo quickly confirmed the report. The Redskins made one last push to retain Williams following the firing of brusque GM Bruce Allen and the training staff, but Williams wants a new deal. The Redskins, apparently, don't want to give it. Going on 32, Williams did not play a down of football in 2019, but he likely remains one of the best blindside protectors in the league. Washington should be able to land a Day 2 pick. A first probably isn't realistic, though that is surely where talks will begin.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Browns will "explore" a trade for Redskins LT Trent Williams.

The same is true of impending free agent Jason Peters. The Browns have a massive need at left tackle, and new OL coach Bill Callahan had the same role in Washington from 2015-19. It remains to be seen how aggressive the Browns' new front office will be after the brief, reckless John Dorsey era, but they are certainly hoping to be competitive in 2020. Williams currently has just one year and $12.5 million left on his deal. He has said his trade pursuit is more about a change of scenery than new contract, though the latter still figures to be necessary.

Dorsey was reckless? It seems like he made Cleveland the talk of the NFL inside of a couple years. KC won a Super Bowl after he left town, at least some of that work was set in motion by Dorsey. I believe he traces back to New England if I'm not mistaken.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Redskins want "fair compensation" for LT Trent Williams.

Rapoport added that interest in Williams has picked up. Additionally, he wants a new long-term deal upon being traded to a new team. Obviously Washington isn't about to just give their stud LT away, but it'll be interesting to see how much value they're able to get considering the circumstances. It'd be surprising if Williams doesn't have a new home before too much longer.

The Athletic's Connor Hughes reports the Jets are among the teams pursuing Redskins LT Trent Williams.

This makes sense. The Jets ranked 30th in adjusted sack rate and 31st in adjusted line yards per rush last season (Football Outsiders). Only the Steelers averaged fewer yards before contact per rush. Protecting Sam Darnold needs to be on the top of the team's offseason to-do list. Overall, Darnold was pressured on a league-high 41.6% of his dropbacks in 2019 (PFF).

This does not sense.  The Jets are a bunch of stupids who should have their team taken away for being unable to come anywhere close to fielding a competitive team.  Trade some desperately needed future draft capital for a 32 year old tackle, you bozos.

You're totally going to win this year with Adam Gase 😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂

I suppose these jokers would just waste the draft capital on bad picks anyhow, but they should at least try drafting young lineman.  Who cares if Darnold gets pressured slightly less for a few years, build your team.  Maybe try to learn from the last decade of failed short term thinking?

The Athletic's Ben Standig reports the Cardinals and Texans have "expressed interest" in LT Trent Williams.

Neither team makes a whole lot of sense for Williams on paper after the Cardinals just re-signed LT D.J. Humphries to a three-year, $44.25 million contract last month and the Texans traded a boat-load of picks for Laremy Tunsil last summer, though he still needs a long-term deal. The Jets and Browns have also been linked pretty heavily to Williams.

ESPN's John Keim reports LT Trent Williams wants a contract extension that will pay him $20 million annually.

It's a lot of money for a 31-year-old that sat out last year and hasn't played a full season since 2013. Given his contract demands, it's unlikely any team gives up a first-rounder for Williams, but the Redskins may settle for an early Day 2 pick. The Jets and Browns are the top landing spots for Williams.

The Athletic's Connor Hughes reports the Redskins are "pretty set" on a second-round pick in exchange for LT Trent Williams.

A Jets reporter, Hughes believes this has Gang Green out of the running for Washington's longtime left tackle. Williams is also believed to be seeking a $20-million-per-year extension. A second-round pick is a perfectly reasonable demand, but Washington was much more likely to get that last year. Instead, they were pigheaded and forced Williams to sit out.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports LT Trent Williams' agent, Vincent Taylor, told the Redskins it's in the "best interest" to trade or release him.

"The relationship between the Redskins and Trent Williams has reached a point where it's in the best interest that the Redskins trade or release him," Taylor wrote in a statement to ESPN. The full release can be viewed in the link below. Washington has reportedly been shopping the 31-year-old left tackle ever since he requested $20 million annually, but the team's desired second-round pick in exchange has proven to be impossible to come by given Williams' demands. This situation is obviously one that isn't coming to a close any time soon. It remains unlikely Williams plays on his current deal no matter how this scenario shakes out.

Really Schefter?  No ####?  Aren't you a smart one?

The problem isn't that they don't want to trade him.  It's that his agent's salary demands are ludicrous for an aged LT that has barely played in 2 years, had a medical issue, and is 1 toke away from a season long suspension.

Drop those salary demans to $16M and maybe your player would be tradable.

Every time Vincent Taylor opens his mouth, his client looks the worse for it.  He overplayed his hand and is trying to find a way to save his own job.  It'll get done, eventually.

All Schefter reported was what Taylor told him. Maybe you misread it, because going off on Schefter seems misplaced.

NBC Sports' JP Finlay reports the Redskins want "something comparable in value" for LT Trent Williams.

It's been reported that the Redskins have been seeking a second-round pick for Williams, who is asking for a trade and $18+ million annually. Teams like the Jets have been in contact for the veteran left tackle, but an agreement hasn't been close with the Redskins' demands remaining high. With the 2020 NFL Draft approaching, Washington may have no choice but to lower their asking price. Multiple mid-round picks or a player-pick package should be on the table at this point.

I think you're right in that he's expressing frustration with the situation, but it's also fine to criticize Schefter in this situation. In this report Schefter is more or less conveying that his breaking news is..... nothing has changed. For almost a year..... Trent Williams is unwilling to play for the Redskins and wants to leave. Nobody seems willing to give up anything of value for Williams so the Redskins are in no hurry to release him or trade him for nothing. Again, nothing has changed. Sometimes no news is just that. NO NEWS. There isn't an asteroid hurtling to destroy the planet tomorrow. Megatron isn't coming out of retirement. There is no real need to report on the news that isn't happening.

There is a difference between reporting actual news and being a microphone for an agent throwing a tantrum. I used to think the Redskins should just move on from Williams to let the franchise get a fresh start but if no NFL team is even willing to give up a day 2 pick in the draft(shrug) I would just let him sit out his 30's. Schefter can go on "reporting" on the updates to the exact same situation every week when Taylor pulls his string but as a franchise WAS shouldn't comment on the situation UNLESS SOMETHING CHANGES. If Trent Williams doesn't want to play football he doesn't have to. He certainly didn't have to sign the contract that he chose to sign. If he hadn't he would be a FA. And just like Clowney, and Melvin Gordon, and Winston I'm sure he'd get exactly as much money as he and his agent have decided that he deserves.

This is all Schefter "reported",  LT Trent Williams' agent, Vincent Taylor, told the Redskins it's in the "best interest" to trade or release him.

It's the offseason. There isn't much going on. If that upsets you. It's you.

FWIW, I think it's significant that his agent is allowed to seek a trade.  In that framework, they can tell teams that the $20M contract demand was only for WAS, to get him out of there. He may well be available for less.  The second part is trade compensation itself which might be a 2nd round pick or might be a 2nd day pick, which is likely if the contract is workable.

Boys boys boys.  It's all good.  Dr Oct is right.  Schefter didn't necessarily say anything.  He just reported what the agent said.  I was off base.

Albeit I think Schefter is kind of providing an assist in making the new Skins management look bad by the angles he takes in his reporting. He could at least let them play a game before he gets back on the bandwagon of backhanded jabs at them.  His last sentence in his tweet about the 5th rounder for Dunbar may be factual, but it's a jab that's overly simplifies what the Skins accomplished getting Dunbar's soon to be contract issue (and what would have been a holdout) out the door when they don't need distractions.

Trent will be out of here too.  But the longer they hold onto him the more likely TB, CLE, SD, MIA, and others will finally come around on trade value and Trents agent will finally drop on contract demands.  With Dunbar that wasn't the issue.  Everyone knows he's not close to the #2 CB in the league per PFF.  He's probably not in the top 30 CBs.  His value was limited IMO.

Vikings Interested in LT Trent Williams

According to this article the contract Williams is seeking is less than what has been reported.

The artcle also floats the possibility of the Vikings trading Riley Reiff for Trent Williams. I assume the Vikings would need to add something a bit more to get that done than just Reiff, but maybe not that much more?

ESPN's Josina Anderson reports acquiring LT Trent Williams is "still on the table" for the Browns.

"Nothing is imminent or super close right now," Anderson adds, but the Browns are continuing to monitor the situation. All but certain to be selecting their successor at left tackle with the No. 10 overall pick, it makes sense for Browns GM Andrew Berry to simply forego that development process altogether and instead opt to bring in a sure-thing to shore up Baker Mayfield's blindside. Of course, that would also entail coming to terms on a new deal worth upwards of $18 million-plus annually for the 31-year-old stud. The Vikings, currently set to select at No. 22 and No. 25 in the first round of Thursday's draft, are also reportedly inquiring on what it would take to land Williams.

ESPN's Jenna Laine reports the Buccaneers nearly traded O.J. Howard to the Redskins in exchange for Trent Williams in February, but talks fell through.

It's significant since both players are hot commodities ahead of Thursday's draft. ESPN's Josina Anderson adds that Williams' situation is "ongoing" and one unnamed team has already laid out a plan for the entire deal; any conversations centering around the No. 2 overall pick would likely result in Williams being dealt. Expect the 31-year-old left tackle to pen a lucrative extension the moment he's traded, wherever that may be. The Vikings, Browns, and Buccaneers are a few expected suitors.

ESPN's Courtney Cronin reports the Vikings remain in pursuit of Redskins LT Trent Williams.

Minnesota had previously offered a Day 3 pick to the Redskins last week, but Washington apparently wants a little bit more. The Vikings can make it happen with 12 picks across the next two days, but the Redskins are running out of suitors after the Browns and Bucs both drafted tackles in the first round Thursday night to pretty much eliminate themselves from the Williams sweepstakes. The Vikings don't have much cap space to work with, so Cronin suggests Minnesota could send a pick and incumbent LT Riley Reiff to D.C. for Williams.

What a joke. Williams thinks he is worth $20mil/season but he's afraid to compete with the SEVENTH rookie OT drafted? I felt bad for Williams when he SAID it was all about his health, and getting dinked around by Bruce Allen, and he didn't trust the medical staff etc, etc. Turns out this was all about money the whole time. Just sit quietly in the corner Trent and leak to the "media" that you want to get traded every few months. It won't cost the Redskins a dime to unofficially retire you. Any thoughts of releasing this big baby should be squashed as soon as possible. There's really not a lot to spend the money on anyway at this point. Maybe they could sign Clowney as their 7th starting defensive lineman?

"TRENT WILLIAMST, WASHINGTON REDSKINS

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Redskins LT Trent Williams declined the team's proposed trade to the Vikings.

Vikings added a first-round talent, Ezra Cleveland, to shore up Kirk Cousins' blindside in the second round of Saturday's festivities, leading Williams to reportedly nix any movement to Minnesota in the process. Whether the Vikings have done well in the draft (and they have through two nights) is a moot point as their organization was realistically one of the last remaining suitors for 31-year-old Williams to land with. At this point, it can't be completely thrown out that he steps away from football entirely in 2020. There's no conclusion to report as long as Williams refuses to play for Washington and, on the other end of the spectrum, other franchises refuse to give in to his lucrative demands. He remains up for grabs as one of the best left tackles in all of football."

At this point just trade him for any player.  OL, LB, TE.  Hell, get a 10th player to compete at RB or DL.  It doesn't matter how old or young or what their contract is.  End this mess and get something back.  It's $12.5M of cap space freed up.  Could snatch up Ryan Logan or Amukamara for that.

Trent (or his agent, or both) have ZERO credibility right now. I'm fine with letting him rot on the bench if he choses not to play and blocks potential trades. He's not a FA, he doesn't get to control his fate.

But they have enough to sign Logan Ryan right now. They don't even need Trents money. I think the new CBA gives the Redskins more power than ever against holdouts. If Trent doesn't want to play anymore I respect his decision. He shouldn't play anymore. But someone should inform his agent that he's not a FA just as @ffmail4me says. If they aren't going to get anything for him, they are losing nothing by letting him sit.

He's already pissed away $12+Mil, why not sit another year and make it an even $25Mil? That's a lot of weed he could have bought. His career is just slipping down through the hourglass. The way he and his agent are handling this whole thing make Melvin Gordon look like a rocket scientist.

Bruce Allen wasn't fair to me! Fired

The Skins medical staff wasn't fair! Fired

The new WAS regime isn't being fair!

MIN drafted the 7th OT in the draft class!

Waaaaaaaaaaaa!

At least Rotoworld believes everything Vincent Taylor says as gospel.

Rotoworld:

Agent Vincent Taylor, speaking for Redskins LT Trent Williams, said "there has been false reporting that Trent and I objected to particular trades."

Taylor added, "I will continue to respect the Redskins' right to negotiate a trade, and hope that the negotiations quickly lead to a trade that is in the Redskins' interest, Trent's interest, and the interest of the other team." This dispels a previous report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that Williams declined a trade to the Vikings. This situation just keeps getting worse for Washington. Waiting this long to attempt to get a trade done was curious enough, and now they're seemingly leaking false information in an attempt to swing the public. It remains to be seen who Williams will suit up for in 2020, but it almost certainly won't be the Redskins.

Wow the rich get richer.
Due to the virus, we should play it safe for the next season and just skip ahead to the Conference Championship games of San Fran vs New Orleans and KC vs Baltimore. All the other games seem non-essential.

Keep in mind several Skins fans acted like extra 2nd and 3rd round picks from ATL were close to worthless.

Skins should have just dared him to sit out another year.
I am sure he would have sat out another year. After one year, why not do it again? He has already made $95 million and got paid $600,000 last year to not play. I think he's fine either way.

I would have been fine with him sitting. They should have traded #2 and all the picks they would have gotten from ATL would have made these picks seem like nothing.

Nah.  It's fine.  Sure they got fleeced on WIlliams.  At least this won't linger into the season.  Plus it was the last year of his deal.  If it wasn't I would be tougher and probably keep him.

FACT:   They lost their negotiating strength in the matter last season.  Bruce had to move him immediately for them to get value for him.  This is just Bruce screwing us from his pad overlooking the Pacific one last time.

I hope this greedy fat b@stard busts in SF. (and I have nothing against the 49ers for the record)
I don't wish him any ill will, I blame the "new" regime in WAS that seems to have rewarded a player under contract throwing a year long temper tantrum. It's a bad look for the team and under the new CBA Williams had NO leverage. NONE.
