*** OFFICIAL *** COVID-19 CoronaVirus Thread. Fresh epidemic fears as child pneumonia cases surge in Europe after China outbreak. NOW in USA (22 Viewers)

Having to explain to people that it’s already likely here and they just don’t know about it is a real painful part of this.
I get that, but again, I think that is why we could get hit hard.   People don't seem to grasp that when I talk to them, and we don't have the government/society other countries do to say "just do it".

Let's make that something learned from this event and work to ensure the people who live paycheck to paycheck get better terms of employment, that those without healthcare get access. How about that?
Agreed and I’m not in that position so I’m lucky and bought supplies. Don’t have masks or a ton of Purell, but better than most. I just hate that people like that get ignored/hit hardest and I’m supposedly a Republican (not a real fan of either party at this point, tired of the have to be on one side crap).

I had the conversation with a co-worker yesterday. When I explained to him the lack of tests being the reason we don’t know anything there was a long pause after. Oh well.

I’m just trying to figure what changed yesterday in my neck of the woods. I was out and about in stores first thing in the morning and it was business as usual. I was even able to get hand sanitizer. Supply of TP and Lysol was pretty low, but they had everything including water.

Jump to the end of the day and grocery stores were wiped out. There were news stories about stores having to limit the number of shoppers at a time and there being long lines just to be able to get in. By the end of the day it looked like the stores in Walking Dead with only a jar of orange marmalade and a blackberry scone left.

People posted pictures of rows in stores that were completely empty. Some public schools around here are shutting down for a minimum of 6 weeks. I guess we will have to plan tofu tacos for dinner since there was a run in the meat department.
Yikes.

NBA shutting down Wednesday night was a real eye-opener. Then it cascaded with all the other leagues yesterday.

Three weeks ago our company stopped all international travel for business

Two weeks ago they asked for an assessment from each manager on their team's ability to work from home

This week then banned all domestic travel for business and are allowing no visitors in the building.  Still no word on WFH.  I have no idea what they are waiting for.
Just go word now.  Office will remain open by everyone encouraged to work from home through at least March 27

Goods production and distribution is going to be the real problem because they don't have a WFH option.

People working in those industries typically don't have a lot of resources and live paycheck to paycheck, which means they go to work unless they physically can't.

Many business owners will weigh risks of infecting their staff vs losing customers and potentially going out of business.
That’s exactly where we are at with this. We own a restaurant that’s been in the family for 65 years. Community ties are strong so customers will be back if we have to close for a period of time. Knowing exactly when to close is the looming question. Our current location is a smaller place so we’ll keep it going until we run out of healthy employees or the directive comes to shut down.

Its going to be rough for me personally as we aren’t in a great place financially. We have a measure of financial worth in a couple different directions but not much in the way of cash. Bright side is we live relatively simply, have great credit(for now), burn wood for heat , have 200lbs of venison in the freezer and have access to a restaurant full of food and toilet paper.  😂

Same here in South Florida. Don't understand the mentality of waiting until a student is reported as contaminated before making a drastic move like closing the schools. Stupid and short-sighted. I won't go so far as saying it's a cultural thing but I'm close.
You are not that close, pretty much the same everywhere.

I tried to have a calm, honest conversation with a couple of employees here about why this is different and why stuff is shutting down.  One got a bored look in her eye and just walked away.  You know, the one that is constantly #####ing that we have to clean more and that everything is being overblown.

Can you do some of your sales work from your home office? If you couldn't meet face to face with customers, could you execute some of your job functions? Can you win any sales at all?

There are a lot of us in this boat. If we are locked out of our offices, labs, and customer sites, it will be difficult or impossible to execute our jobs.
I could do 100% of my sales work from home unfortunately it's not my choice right now. Our company has never been too "remote work" friendly but hopefully this environment will change that for the time being.

And I certainly understand that everyone won't have the opportunity so for those of you, I'm hoping that this is short-lived so you can resume normal operations.

Jeesh... listening to Michael Osterholm on the Joe Rogan Podcast and he is saying 10-15 times more deadly than the "flu". Could require 48 million hospitalizations w/96 million cases occurring and over 480,000 deaths over the next 3-7 months
yeah, but ... why cancel the tournament??!?! most people in danger have lived their lives already!!!

herd thinning, baby - it just feels right!

My son stopped in a grocery store on the way home from work. Said it was a madhouse.

I stopped in Whole Foods. A little more crowded than usual but was still in and out in maybe 10 minutes.

Both stores in Nashua.

Yeah I had ample chance to stock up and didn’t, did not expect this kind of run

going later to see what I can find but i expect it to be wiped out from what I’ve heard from other people

will just have to get creative until they restock

Has anyone mentioned that this is a subplot from a not very good Clancy novel? (insert joke here)

Department meeting in 10 minutes. We've already sent the kids home and cancelled in-person classes here for at least two weeks at my small Baltimore-area university. What's next?

The sports leagues, starting with the NBA took an important leadership role on this
nah, not crowning the NBA as "leaders" here ... they had a confirmed case, and really had no choice ... had they suspended all play prior to Gobert's diagnosis,  then i'd give 'em tons of credit ... simple case now of them closing the barn door after the horse ran out

hands were forced here, these were not altruistic moves, imo.

Very much so. They saved a lot of lives.
As dumb as it sounds to those of us that have been in this thread for quite awhile and know better, I think that the shutdown of the NBA was the a-ha  :o moment for a lot of people that this #### is serious. Sometimes it takes someone you know getting the virus, in other times, it's the NBA shutting down that wakes you up. Whatever works at this point.

Weird. I am one town over from Nashua and heard stories of how chaotic it was at Market Basket in the afternoon. My wife showed me pictures her friend took of both the huge lines and the empty shelves.  Yet we were out at a packed restaurant in Bedford with a confirmed case of the virus right down the street and the place was mobbed and there was a wait and you couldn’t even get in. Odd.

To be fair, the next time I go to a Market Basket and find it not to be chaotic will be the first

ok, i can see it from that cultural standpoint ... but a confirmed case kinda forced it - meh ... anything that ramped up awareness is good.

point taken.

Ok then all the other leagues

Yeah. Anytime a whole bunch of people start doing something at the same time. That's a pretty good signal it's asinine. Man. Think for yourselves. Don't let social media do your thinking for you. If anything comes of this, at the very least - take a step back and look at yourself and how social media is totally running you right now. Everything is going to be okay.

Oh, I’m educated plenty. I’ve been doing nothing but educating myself on this since it started. Let’s see - we all have coronavirus. This is a new strain where no one has immunity and is named Covid-19.  It spreads very easily. The incubation period is 14 days so you can have it, spread it and never possibly even know you have/had it. The highest risk (for mortality) is the elderly, mainly starting at 70yrs and up, but elevated at 50yrs and up, and those with compromised immune systems or underlying health conditions. The goal is not to stop, but slow the spread so the health care system is not overwhelmed (flatten the curve). There are not enough ventilators/beds available if this got to worst case scenario.

How am I doing so far?

CDC is reporting 1215 cases in the US. Out of what? 300 million people? Too many people buying in to the doomsday scenario.

For real, we do all this, and it pops back up - we do it all again? And again? And again?

It's more than likely going to come back this fall and winter. So yeah, we do

Rudy Gobert may have been a dope but his inconsiderate actions may saved some lives.

Yo, last thing I'll say. Just wanted to check in. But if this is overwhelming you or making you act differently than you normally would - try to look at this from the biggest angle possible. However "big picture" you can wrap your mind around - try not to focus on small details that will have you obsessing. I swear to God, everything is going to be okay. Alright fellas, see yall later

Hey man. I see where you're coming from. Sorry you got blown the F up for simply saying what you did. I did NOT expect that type of response to that post. Also bro no use in complying with the negativity or biting back. People are emotional. Let them cool off. Cheers brother
Thanks and no worries. I don’t mind the heat. I have an unpopular take. I get it.

Same.  I gave in to the panic and hate myself for it.  This was after I already made a mid-day trip to Costco.  My 8:00 PM trip to Kroger found the following things out of stock:

Eggs
Ramen
My go-to beers
Butter
Frozen chicken breasts
Distilled water (for my CPAP)
Rubbing alcohol
Vick's (my son still has a nasty cough)
Some creamer my wife uses

This is only the stuff that was on my list.  A lot of other shelves were cleaned out.  Mass hysteria.
They were out of Corona?  :jawdrop:

We are canceled in Ohio, but we had already made a decision our kid was done going to school yesterday morning. If I was in a different state, there is zero chance my kid would be there. What are they going to do, count your kid absent not excused? So what? Personally, I think if you have a kid and disagree with your school decision you should make your own call. If you think we’re all crazy and want to send your kid, that’s fine too. I am just surprised at the number of people who act like they have no say over where there child goes and doesn’t go during an emergency situation.

If I made some march madness bets at the casinos before all this blew up, do I just mail them in and I get sent back checks for my entry fees?

Have you heard if they plan on finishing the tournament at some point?
