dunno. why I asked.

but I've taken lots of PKs- doesn't compare to the few PKs I've taken when it's life or death.
Thanks for the link.Β  Seems about right.Β  75% during shootouts of knockout stages at Euro and World Cup.

Not far off from today.

the last few times I've seen France play (before the tournament), they seem like a group of individuals who can crank things up when they want, but aren't going to beat teams with overall shape or tactics.
and what's frustrating is that this is pretty close to one of the better group of individuals we'll see play together, but there doesn't seem to be much cohesion or ability to fall back on the shape or tactics when the individuals can't rise to the challenge

I tried to fool myself during Covid that sports with out fans in the stadium was decent enough.

Screw that.Β  Sports are a billion times better with packed stands and it isn't even close for me.

Well, they were in the final in Euro 2016 and Won the 2018 WC - I could easily have seen them winning the whole thing if they held that 2 goal lead today.Β

To be fair knock out games are knock out games.Β  Stuff happens.Β  Switzerland are no where near their level.Β  This result happens 1 time in 10, maybe.Β  Β

Luckily for us this is why games are not played on paper :)

I still think any team in the world would trade their own talents for France's.Β  Β

yeah- that team that won the WC (most of the same players)... guys were killing themselves to hold team shape- even Pogba was busting his ### to get back to close passing lanes.Β

I just haven't seen that kind of organization lately. almost like they just expect to win by clicking through the gears when they need to.

I can see that.Β  I think it may be a combination of almost all these guys are veterans and probably have some tired legs and an element of been there done that.Β  Also, they really are so good that they can turn it on.Β  That 18 minutes from them was potentially the best stretch of play any side has played the whole tournament.Β  I don't think anybody expected France to lose at 80' minutes with a 2 goal lead.Β  Naive and poor defending.

How much blame does the French coach take for putting Mbappe 5th in PKs?Β  A guy who can't buy a goal andΒ is struggling?Β  Why not 2nd? Or not in the top 5?

Xhaka misses the quarterfinal against Spain.Β  Huge miss given what Spain will try to do.Β  I'm not a fan of Xhaka for Arsenal but he plays well for the Swiss.

Portugal won in 2016 only conceding one goal in 4 knockout games, going to extra time in 3 of those games.Β  They finished 3rd in their group with 3 draws. Its a boring blueprint, but that's what wins this tournament.

fun game, but at some point they need to move away from PK and after 30’ extra just play sudden deff.
Too risky from an injury standpoint.Β  I hate it too but not sure there's a better option.Β  Replays make sense in season long tournaments but in a knockout short duration tournament you have to do PKs

absolutely. the "frustrating" part for me is that these could be better organized and completely unstoppable given the players on the field. and frustrating isn't probably the best word for me, because I love seeing the underdog win...especially when it's done via good quality.

Unless they makes subs completely free, that just can't happen.Β  I remember an NCAA championship game between Howard and UCLA from way back that went multiple overtimes.Β  By the end, it wasn't soccer.Β  The guys couldn't really run.Β  120 minutes of international caliber soccer is freaking exhausting.

There are practical reasons this will probably never happen as mentioned above but here is one business reason.

With the sport as it is, there are times no one is going to score, and many world feeds will end up being chopped off as limited amount of satellite time is typically purchased for any game.

I had former teammates in that game... will never forget it.Β

although given it was college soccer in the 80s, early 90s, you could argue it was never soccer.

I think that was UCLA vs American College, 8 ot's.

Caliguiri was the captain and Sigi and Sampson were the UCLA coaches.

I also can't remember what my wife tells me to get from the basement by the time I hit the bottom step :)

you and me both... case in point, i just compiled two different UCLA final victories into one. that was the 85' game (when I was a HS sr). the 90' game they beat the Rutgers team that knocked us out in the round of 16 in PKs- but they had already eliminated the never ending OTs by then, so it was probably 2 ots and PKs. may have still been the silver or golden goal rule...

eta... that was Lalas' Rutgers team, btw. as much as yabo as he is now, he was still really dominant back then.

I'd think seeing little teams like Switzerland and Croatia play well would give England hope.
As much as we joke, England did make the semis at the WC and I think got put out by an extra time goal by Croatia. Β I shouldn’tΒ say this but I will - I like their chances tomorrow and to possibly make the final.

I just looked at the new algorithm FIFA is using to calculate the World Rankings.
They obviously have access to the good drugs ... thatΒ stuff is convoluted.

Thats why I've had Italy picked to win it all for awhile now and a lot of Italians have. It's not bias as much as it's the fact they don't have the world class players but they play as a team, they shape together and everything runs like a well oiled machine. Egos left to the side. Some of these other Countries might have the better talent but that doesn't always matter in these tournaments.Β
