Bukayo Saka expected to start England’s #EURO2020 last-16 tie v Germany. 19yo shone in final group game & likely to join Sterling behind Kane. Mount, Grealish + Foden look set to be on bench with #ENG anticipated to go 3-4-3

Thats why I've had Italy picked to win it all for awhile now and a lot of Italians have. It's not bias as much as it's the fact they don't have the world class players but they play as a team, they shape together and everything runs like a well oiled machine. Egos left to the side. Some of these other Countries might have the better talent but that doesn't always matter in these tournaments.Β

England lineup tweetΒ
Not surprised that Southgate would do this - they always play scared. Β Personally I think it’s stupid if that’s what they do.

If he plays 3 CBs, a LB/RB in the midfield withΒ two DMs I kind of hope they lose 5-0. Β Most likely they’ll lose a dull match 1-0.

Has there been any explanation for Sancho's absence?
There has always been some latent arrogance in the English press, fans and coaches etc that if you aren't doing it in the EPL you aren't good enough.

People joke about cold, wet night in Stoke, but that is how many think there.Β

England really need to embrace this chance.Β  It might be the best they have to win.Β  Playing the tournament at home with a large group of talented players is likely the best chance they have to end the 55 year wait for a trophy for quite a while (likely until 2030 when they hope to host WC).

I don't hate this.Β  But maybe only one player each half of ET.Β  Could make for fun soccer, or ugly soccer.Β  Not sure.Β Β

I would also like two additional subs for ET.Β Β
I think it would have to be more often if you want a result within 30 minutes. Β The question is do you prefer 30 minutes then PKs to decide or ending up with a 5 v. 5 game. Β The NHL currently drops one player from each team in OT, but goes to a shootout after five minutes.

Isn't a 343 with Trippier and Shaw as wing backs really a 523?Β  Throw in Rice and Phillips, and you could argue that England are playing a 703.Β  Should be a real show.Β  Yawn.

Kind of the anti Italy with this stat

0.98 - England have progressed the ball upfield 0.98 metres per second in open play at #EURO2020, the lowest figure of any side during the group stage.

For purposes of winning the Euro, I think the most important stat for England is 3 clean sheets in 3 games.Β

I’m pulling for Germany today as I’m a long time fan, having lived there for 2 years. I’ll be hopefully listening on the radio, messaging with my friend in Bavaria while my wife drives. Hoping for a good one.Β Germany winning on pens would be hilarious.Β

I can at least see Southgate’s logic - don’t give Germany anything in the first 45 and maybe Sterling or SakaΒ can get one against the slower legs from Hummels. Β If you need to make a change you can take off any of Shaw, Trippier or Walker and go to a back 4. Β I just don’t like it - they will concede a lot of the ball to Germany and solely depend on the defense to not make a mistake and to hit on counters.

This is what my German friend says.Β  He thinks its anti-Bundesliga bias.
It does feel like England almost always goes safest brand name in the lineup.Β  "No one ever got fired for going with IBM" kind of thing.

ETA, Henderson out and Saka in belies that I guess.

I won’t say you guys are wrong because you very well may be right but I don’t see this lineup as a brand name team - I see it as a side sent out not to lose. Β No Foden, Mount, Graelish, Rashford, Sancho. Β They aren’t confident they can win 3-2 so they setup for a 0-0.

Mount is the only head scratch er if their goal is not to lose.Β  The guy is the best two way player on their team.

Hendo still not 100%? Rice can't sniff Henderson's boots, so he's got to be less than 100%Β

Don’t disagree but I think he’s looking to those guys to come in and change the game in the 2nd half if needed (Mount, Graelish, Rashford and Foden). Β It could work and as @CletiusMaximusΒ has reminded us -Β Β not allowing goals seems to be how to win this. Β He is lucky to have 5 subs at his disposal and that may be influencing his decision too.

Certainly doesn't seem like a great idea for England to match Germany's formation. I'd want to be able to press the Kroos/Goretzka midfield who are getting a lot of time to pick out passes.

There was an article in The Athletic the other day about England’s statistical analysis team and how they’ve been preparing for this specific matchup for 18 months. I think their entire focus going into this is not giving up goals and everything else is secondary.Β It was an interesting read.Β
