Ⅿ- Mandalorian Series! (1 Viewer)

The previously unfinished 7th season of Clone Wars is about to be released on Disney+... I think there is a fair amount of Mandolin content in that as well, specifically the Seige of Mandalore - which sounds fighty.

P.S. I want to watch all of the Palpatine arcs in TCW and Rebels before Episode 9 comes out... but I won't have time.
I don't think it will be a prerequisite to tie anything to the movie. So take your time.

I really liked Rebels but I think part of that was my son being old enough to get it, and watching it together with him was fun.
I liked Rebels, too.  But as it went on, I started to lose interest.  Once Freddie Prinze Jr. went blind, I felt like the show kind of went downhill slightly.  Don't get me wrong, I still liked it.  But I liked TCW better.

And they did.  I don't think throwing more money at it would've brought in more viewers.
No, I agree with that and don't think anybody is arguing that.  I think people are surprised by the look of the show that it is reporting to be one of the higher costing shows ever. You look at other shows that are listed in the most expensive ever, and it's either b/c of salaries (Friends, Frazier), period pieces which are pricey (Boardwalk Empire, The Crown), or they look a lot better (again, JMO) than this - GoT, Band of Brothers, etc..

A show I love, The Expanse, I would argue looks better than Madalorian and has a $5M/episode budget.   I think people are just curious where the money is going if that price tag is accurate.

Back to the show - do I assume the random ATST on that planet is an indication that these weapons are just being bought and sold randomly after the empire collapsed? - similar to the dirty Troopers with Herzog.

What are people's guesses on what they want baby Yoda for:  turn him bad, study his Jedi-ness, kill him so they don't have an all powerful Jedi to battle in the future, ?

I think the Mandalorian looks fantastic and this line of criticism is crazy.

Agreed.   I can't think of one thing I've seen where I thought, "Wow.  What cheesy CGI."
Go back to my statement that I rarely think CGI looks good anyway.  Just not something I like to see.

I fully admit that the shows on the list after looking at them are more practical in nature, but I think the CG is GOT is better than this.  The comparison I brought up with The Expanse was just because they are both sci-fi and CGI driven shows, and I am just surprised that one is 3x more to make just by looking at them.  So my question is - how much of that budget is just the fact that it's Star Wars or Favreau, etc..  , or do people think it's worth it and this show looks 3x better than stuff like that?

I don't know the answers to those questions, GB.  But I do know that if I was watching this on the big screen, I wouldn't be complaining about it not looking good enough.

One other thing to note is that there are still 4 more episodes left.  I'm guessing at least 2 of them are going to be fairly epic when it comes to CGI battles.  The $15 million is an average.  I wouldn't get caught up on this last episode not looking incredibly expensive.

Again, I think people's expectations are just too high because there's never been a SW live action TV show before.  All we've known is the movies and cartoons.  So when the TV show looks good, but not movie quality, people seem to be displeased.  Me personally, this is the best CGI I've ever seen in a TV show.  This feels like a movie to me.  And there's no other TV show that's ever felt that way to me.

Huh.  I guess it's all opinion so we'll all see it differently but it never even occurred to me that the effects in this show were anything above average.  That big shootout scene with all the bounty hunts after Mando stole back baby Yoda was particularly meh.

To me the effects in something like The Expanse as mentioned above are probably 3x better than this at 1/3rd the cost.  ST:Discovery blows it away too.  Battlestar even at 10 years old.  Pretty much any modern sci-fi that's not on the sci-fi channel, and of course as mentioned there is no TV show even in the ballpark of the last few seasons of GoT from an effects standpoint.

I agree that the high budget on this is very surprising given the product.  I guess a lot of it could be the sets.  That's a big hidden cost in these budgets and IIRC that's one of the things that made Firefly so expensive (relative to its time) back in the day.

Seems like they definitely wanted to study it.  They had the scientist as part of the crew that had the bounty out on him that wanted to make sure he was captured alive, and had him in some kind of chamber that looked like they were studying him when Mando broke him out.

It was an interesting dynamic between those two with the reaction to him saying that they would take him for a lesser $ too.  I am curious how they got ahold of this one to begin with - how was the yodaling captured to begin with?

I'm going to go back and watch the "History of the Mandolrians" as told by Clones and Rebels.  If anyone is interested, it's as follows:
Coincidentally....  Disney just dropped a 40 minute "Mandalorion Civil War" episode on youtube - looks like it is 1 of 3.  https://youtu.be/EcNCLMgvBb8

I would hope that they get to which of those are the case this season.  Just part of the mystery now - who he/she is, and what these people want with him.
He - the show also made that clear.

The Jack Ryan series on Amazon is also 8 episodes for each of the first two seasons.

For tight seasonal arc based shows like Ryan and Stranger Things, a shorter episode number is nice for story telling.

No arc has yet emerged on The Mandalorian, which in part is likely due to only being 30 minutes vs these other hour long shows so they can't tell as much of a story over only 4 episodes.

It may be that the story won't be season based on The Mandalorian.  Maybe the story emerges more over multiple seasons.  I did see a quote from one of the producers saying they intend to lay things out slowly and don't intend to give answers in any defined time period so we probably just need to wait it out.
Only one episode has been 30 minutes.  The rest have been 37 - 40 minutes, closer to a standard hour long network show run time, without commercials.

Yes, my thought was that at some point, if they wanted, they could put this on ABC or a television station and it would fit an hour show with commercials.

Maybe the Wonderful World of Disney on ABC once the season runs its course on Disney+ and some time has passed.

I'm confused.  Is this from an actual Rebels episode or is this something brand new?
It looks like they combined a couple Rebels episodes for the first installment... probably will do the same with the next two as there was a significant mando arc in Rebels

Oh, Ok.  Yeah, there are 6 episodes that deal with the Mandalorians in Rebels.

Thought it was still pretty good. Was nice to see Mos Eisley and Tatooine in the regular flow of an episode without being like "HEY EVERYONE! REMEMBER TATTOOINE?"

The show is definitely starting to feel like a serial. New mission every week with tidbits of overarching story. The acting by the rookie bounty Hunter was a bit lacking but not so bad that it took me out of it. Thought the ex Imperial assassin was another nice challenge for Mando to tackle.

It's becoming a Friday night routine for me and the kids to sit down and watch the show. That's by far the best Star Wars experience I've had with them so far. They're enjoying the show and wondering what will happen and I get to watch new Star wars content with them that feels like Star Wars. This is all I wanted.

I wonder if the very last scene was a hint of a bigger story line when the hidden character checks on Melinda May....

Probably not though, I guess it was probably just another bounty hunter.

Idk. I think it's more than that. They've shown other Bounty Hunters a bunch so far. This seemed more ominous. Probably leading to a proper antagonist.

I think this is a good observation.

Disney does appear to be stepping lightly here.  30 minute episodes, low CGI use, and low prosthetic use are three key indicators of budget control.

Hopefully if this season is the success it appears to be, they will add more to the budget for season 2.

It is interesting to watch a giant like Disney proceed carefully where another giant like Amazon is throwing the kitchen sink at Lord of the Rings.
You forgot to mention they saved money on writers by using a couple of 11yo boys they found at a comic book store.

I promise you all- I won't keep harping on how really bad the writing is.

At this point after more than enough episodes, it's not getting any better, so I doubt it will in the future. it's either sit back and enjoy the stupidity just so I can squeeze some SW universe into me noggin, or bail. Haven't decided which tbh, because I'm a fan of the SW universe and I'm still hopeful something gets better.

Ep 5 still really ungood writing and some cheesy SciFi Channel quality special effects.  Still watching because nostalgia—that’s really what this all is about. Let’s do a tour of Tatooine. Here’s where Han and Greedo sat!  It’s weak writing and a “just Ok” show with lots of nostalgia.

Was that supposed to be Boba Fett at the end?

Last we saw, in canon, he fell into the Sarlacc in Return of the Jedi, followed by a burp to indicate he was swallowed whole I guess.

But Darth Maul was brought back and so is the emperor so safe to assume anything is possible.

It's better than the last star wars movie. I'll take it.

From what I hear, it's better than the upcoming star wars movie also. Standards have plunged

No one's ever really gone.

Or it’s being made for young kids and not adults
This show I agree to an extent. The way the dude flat out killed the Imperial assassin though caught my 8 year old off guard. He was like "Wait did he just kill her? Why did he do that!?" I had to just tell him because he's bad.

Plus the dude is vaporizing Jawas.

The show is fun. It’s meant to be a western serial with a heavy wink to Star Wars nostalgia. It’s not supposed to be Breaking Bad or The Leftovers. I know we live in this golden age of tv but sometimes a show can just be dumb fun imo.
