Super Eagles soar into the semifinals, beating South Africa on an 89th minute goal.

Senegal is a semifinalist on the other side of the bracket.  Benin played them tough.
The keeper is not going to sleep well tonight.  That was very poorly played

And yet another knee slide celebration fail.  These things are tough :)

Atlanta United and St. Louis FC played to a 0-0 draw in the first half of the US Open Cup quarterfinal. The ATL fans' boos are getting pretty loud.

ETA: There it is, 1-0, probably going to tack on a couple more.

Algeria has to be the favorites on form although their game vs. Nigeria today could have gone either way.   The quality of attacking in this tournament hasn't been great so most of the scorelines have been tight.  The tournament has gone pretty smoothly for CAF so far without much controversy although it is ridiculous that they'll be playing a competitive match on July 19th.

Useless info:  this will be the first AFCON final since 1998 where both teams will be coached by native born coaches.

Preseason or not Arsenal’s defense looks awful
Was at the game last night and for most of it they did look the better team vs Bayern.  Aub and Lacazette are a great pair.  And if Ozil (trying to look like Rapinoe?) decides to play their attack will be fun to watch.  But yes their D looked suspect.  My Bro-in-Law is an arsenal supporter and their D is so bad he would gladly take Chris Smalling whom most United fans want out.

Great effort by the GK there. And it looks like that might be the only goal.
I agree.  You have to at least take a step and lunge backwards.

The arc was so high it may have not mattered but that ball did not drop deep into the net so he may have been able to least have an outside shot if he tried.

OMG, Zlatan.

Chests it, volleys it back over his head with his right foot, then turns and hits it inside out with his right foot again from outside the box.

Sorry, Jozy.

We should enjoy this.  We may never again see a guy who talks as much as Zlatan does and then backs it up almost every game.  It is insane how many great goals this guy has scored in his career in so many different leagues.

Wrong thread but it is great to see such a young American like Arauju in a big game like this.  And his coach felt comfortable enough to try him at a new position too as I think he has only played in defense in his career but got the start at RW today.

Arauju was the youngest player on our most recent U20 WC team.

Zlatan obviously not happy with LAFC getting all the accolades this year :)

This is going to be fabulous if they meet in the conference finals.

Said it before... I love goals that I've never seen before.  Something unique.  I think Zlatan has more of them than anyone else.  His highlights are just so different than everyone else's.  To hit that first ball with the outside of the right and get enough power on it to drive it is just nuts.

ETA:  and his "playoff mode every game" post-game comments were classic as well.  Everything he says is delivered like he's Louis XIV sitting on a golden throne at Versailles in 1687.

Watched the first half of Spurs/Juve yesterday.

Some observations. Walker-Peters is one heck of an exciting prospect at RB/WB, Georgiou (SP?) is not very good, and I hope he plays a lot. Spurs players in general are executing Poch's system really well for being early in the pre-season. Toby is looking good anchoring the line. Spurs press was fantastic, and Spurs looks really good off the ball in the upper 2 3rds, great positioning.

It's early, but there was very little creative spark in build up play or from MF. Tons of chances created on the break, but otherwise there's a lot of work needed. Looking very sloppy on the ball in the defensive 3rd and needs a lot of improvement in the back, and DM before the season.

Overall a good display IMO, and Spurs look "on it" early. Feels odd saying it, but I think it's a much better team without Kane, and they really need "an Eriksen".

I'll watch the second half tonight, I think Kane might play in that, so maybe my opinion will change.

update?

KWP is not a prospect - he is already 22, and I am not sure he will get many minutes at Spurs.

Georgiou - not a prospect at all - Spurs are selling Rose and Davies is still recovering from surgery - he is only on the tour to eat up minutes.

Best prospect on the field was Oliver Skipp who played at the bottom of the midfield diamond.  Still 18, but he should get some minutes this season in Cup matches, and maybe some minutes off the bench.  Troy Parrott is the Irish Striker who started for Kane - he is just 17, and is probably the top youth prospect in the system right now.  Internal debate on giving Llorente another 1-year deal, or simply using Parrott.  I hope they go with Parrott.  When Kane misses time, it will still be Son who takes on that role - but it would be good to save a non-HG spot.

I do agree that Spurs were far more aggressive in the game than they were for large parts of last season - much more direct in attack.

  I did like Parrott, they should keep him for sure. Skipp was tidy as well.

Who's the left back option to start the season?

I think Davies will be fit to start the season. He is apparently training and building fitness while Spurs were in Asia.  Spurs are also likely to buy Sessegnon from Fulham to partner with Davies. (But Sessegnon was injured in the Euro U21s this summer, so he probably won't be ready to start the season...)

And, there is a small chance Rose will not be sold - if he cannot find a team...but he was left off the Asia trip specifically so he could find a team.

RB is a bit of a concern at the start of the season - and KWP could get a couple of games in (but he looked pretty poor today v. United).  Foyth is suspended for the first two matches, and Aurier was injured in AFCON  - not clear if he will be ready for the start of the season.  Spurs next pre-season match will be Real Madrid in the Audi Cup in Munich - might give some clarity by then.

As everyone is no doubt aware, you can catch the Rising attempt to break the USL record for consecutive victories in about 10 minutes on ESPN+. This is history, folks.

Heads up that Arsenal Lyon is coming up shortly streaming on espn3.
