I want to like this team -- 2nd fiddle to Real in Madrid is right up my alley -- but I just can't do it.

I guess getting rid of the away goal rule giveth and taketh. I didn't watch the game, but you can't argue with these tactics in this tie and it has got to be pretty rare for any team to limit City's attack like this at the Etihad.

They don't always play that way and have certainly shown a more attack minded game in la liga this season.  Just look at the GF and GA numbers this season to 2 years ago.  They are way more leaky at the back.

I agree that it's hard to like a team that does absolutely nothing to attack the opposition goal, instead saying, "come beat me."  But those tactics are dictated by the circumstances, so I can't fault Simeone for employing them to try and win the 2-leg series.

But Simeone is really never going to employ tactics like Pep at Barça or Klopp at Liverpool.  That's just not him and it doesn't suit his players.  Simeone has actively moved players out that didn't want to give 100% to the team game.  Personally, I think a coach that can motivate his players, inspire them to give 100% and engender loyalty from mercenaries is pretty special.

He has two former Barca attacking players and a bunch of Spain players... it's not like he's coaching Stoke on a cold, rainy Feb weeknight.

 
and yet, AM did have a few legit counter opportunities to start the 2nd half... that if executed better could/should've created a goal or solid goal scoring opportunites.

remember when players in their early 30's used to slow down? 

This cat is 35 and has scored more goals this year than in any season in his long great pro career.  He is far from the only one.  Ronaldo, Zlatan, Benzema, Messi, Lewondowski and so many others are still producing big numbers at advanced ages.

The fascinating part of this goal is how little effort he puts into the shot and how much speed it has by the time it hits the net.

Dani Alves at 38 still being able to patrol his side of the pitch for club in country is crazy too. A lot of these forwards are not asked to do much defensively.
