⚽ Soccer Match-day Thread (7 Viewers)

@Newcastle next weekend, 60 hours after the home CL game vs Villareal, has been circled on my calendar for a long time as the biggest (non-final) hurdle after the two City games were done.

Newcastle are playing tough and Liverpool's almost certainly going to rotate the squad a lot -- especially with the 2nd CL match shortly after.  The only thing offsetting it at all is that Liverpool will have been home for 10 days before that game, and the trip is short.

Not quite sure how Richarlison stayed on at the end there. Also sure Doucoure shoved someone in the aftermath which gets a yellow 100% of the time if he didn't already have one
Attwell had a terrible game, but Liverpool could have been whistled for a pen and some other fouls that he let go too.  So it was generically awful reffing IMO and he just never had control of the game.

yep and yep.

that ref was not up to this one.

who knows the FA rules about what can be reviewed post-game? that kick out by Richarlison was nastier than it first looked.

Saying Everton have something to build on is a joke.  They looked like a team playing with 9 men, even after going down.  Sure, if you want to sit back and bunker with 11 inside 30 yards he's found something to build on.

If he wants to stay up playing against teams that don't have their right back ahead of the midfield?  Not so much.  Gordon's not going to run wild like that against a team with a normal RB and that isn't pressing 9 players into attack.

they have a bunch of quality PL level players- that's more than can be said of most of the bottom third of teams. I don't know if that's something to build on... but I don't blame them for trying a tactic to get a much needed point against a much better team where nobody expected them to get one.

I hated the cynical time wasting- but otherwise the rest of it was working perfectly. before it got uglyugly, I commented upthread about how well Everton was controlling the game and how good thier shape looked... even generating their own chances while limiting Liverpools. but that got uglyugly and cynical af pdq. but that's not how they play 80% of the time, and there are definitely guys in place to make somethign work... perhaps with a better coach.

with Burnley's run, all of a sudden Leeds are deeper in the fight for relegation.

with Marsch, I'm more tied to their survival than Burnley's.. so I'm rooting for Everton to go down. or Burnley. I changed my mind and can live with it.

amazing stat, and ironically, Man City have the second longest run.  You would think two teams that attack this much would draw pk's

===========================

[Opta] Liverpool haven't had a penalty awarded against them in any of their last 46 league matches, the longest active run for any Premier League side

working from home all weekend with the wife and daughter gone on spring break... soccer has been on all day.

now it's the RBs vs ORL.

I always liked Parejas, but ORL shape has been outmatched here- NY consistently getting the second ball and freedom in dangerous spots right in the attacking center of the park. RB with a bunch of no-names, other than my man Tolkin. previous draft pick Frankie Amaya (UCLA) running things as an 8 alongside local boy Omir Fernandez... and my first real look at their new English Championship forward Fletcher who is a giant (6'-5") but not loving him, tbh. 2-0 in the 54th for the good guys away in ORL.

Pato did bupkis. ORL subbed in a 17yo local kid, CB Thomas Williams, at the half.

Against them, not for them.

Gabriel Jesus scored a PK yesterday, for example.

what appears to be a really soft PK vs ORL (handball on a CB who knew nothing about it) makes it 3-0.

ORL MF just overmatched here. RB constantly getting a foot in to break up any attacks and then start their own. it's been a pretty dominant team victory here, with no RB players really standing out to me.

Bundie wrapped up today... you'll never guess who took the title!

but in other leagues where titles are up for grabs... Serie A coming down to the wire between the real club from Milan and the poser club from Milan. the posers have lost their lead by a point after today's Inter win over @Kafka Roma.

going to be a fun finish.... @DJackson10

Posers? Inter had to beg to allow Milan and the city to play at the San Siro yrs ago with no where else to go

Spurs is the one I’ve had an eye on. Conte will have them up for it and even though they’re inconsistent, on their day they have dudes that can roll.

Who the opposition is is almost irrelevant.

It’s perfection or 2nd

I still can't believe Spurs didn't get a single shot on goal yesterday against Brentford.

At home with the first team lineup though.

I bet we see some fringe players at Newcastle.  Tsimikas, Bobby(!), Harvey, Ox, Div, Milner.  There's no way to manage the schedule for that one.

They got this Ars v MU pk right at least, after clearly calling off the original goal for being offsides.
I disagree that it was a foul, esp with the lack of a call/VAR on Elanga in the box at the other end.

Oh and Arsenal's final goal should have been chalked off for offside too.  Arsenal player impeded De Gea's view of the ball and was offside by a wide margin.  Definition of impeding the play.

I am sad as a fan that by the letter of the law, that this is offside.  If there was any one rule I want to see improved, it is this one.

This is my biggest issue with VAR.  No referee or linesman can see that as on or off.  Which to me means he's even and ON.  VAR wasn't supposed to be instituted to legislate, just to fix clear and obvious mistakes.  This was not one.

Oh and even with the 2 PKs United should have had, and the 2 Arsenal goals that should not have been given I am in no way thinking United deserved to win that game.  Arsenal looked fluid and solid in attack.  United as disjointed as ever.

And no, Harry Maguire would not have done better than Varane and Telles on Arsenal's first goal.  He either wouldn't have been in position or would have put it into his own net.

Wednesday making it two teams who they last played away to in the league at Highbury, it's been that long ago since they got relegated. Seems they still think that whoever plays there is Arsenal, as they've lost the lead they had and are now behind to Fleetwood

Is there anything worse than the linesman being told to not raise the flag for offside until after the play ends? Especially when its that obvious?

has the feel of Chelsea going up by a bunch and RM finding a way back.

MC might rue those clear cut scoring chances they squandered.
