i am no longer a footy detractor - when you take the time to watch more matches, it becomes addicting - it is exciting as ####, even when 'boring', because the slightest move can cause a huge shift in barely a heartbeat ... tons of strategy, it's a more cerebral game than most anything else, so maybe that's why the "LOOK AT ME!!!!" non stop highlight sports culture we are just doesn't give two ####s to embrace it on a larger scale - however, and i know you know this as fact, the largest chunk of new citizens in our area are replacing diamonds with pitches at a very rapid clip ... the landscape will be totally flipped, imo, in roughly 25 yrs.

fair enuff ... but you have to understand how much of that particular allure can elevate a sport - everyone knows that if gambling were totally eradicated that the NFL would die instantly - now, footy betting is a blast to me - more folks should look into it - it blows the other sports out the lagoon, and i say this as a lifelong bettor -

MLS is going to support betting with open arms.  They are figuring how to do it at the stadiums on game day.

We've seen a massive shift of fan-base growth that includes US general sports fans. The soccer thread itself has a bunch of guys who fit that demo. Don't assume it's only immigrants who are helping this sport grow.

of course not, but the influx of born footy fanatics certainty doesn't hurt - demographic shift will put the sport in the forefront moreso than johnny come latelys - bigger homegrown shift will occur by medical attrition, i.e., parents pushing kids away from other sports (i'm looking at YOU, tackle football).

Yeah, all the various soccer threads are full of guys who did not like the sport much until they watched a WC, got hooked and hung around to start watching the club games and got really hooked.

This is the dynamic I referred to in the women's thread that needs to happen to help grow their club games.

The one problem we have with the ten trillion Latino's is that they love the sport, but tend to only support their country of ancestry instead of supporting the US where they are born and living.  It is a tough dynamic to crack.

You will see it on full display tonight as Mexico will be the true home side in Chicago.

Immigrants have always helped. But I'm just saying- as a guy who's been in the sport a long time and was used to only being able to discuss with the other former ayers- don't underestimate the influx of your johnny-come-latelies. It's been massive, from live games in bars to internet discussion, to butts in seats, tv viewership.

Brookkyn was SWAMPED more than usual with Italian flags when Italy made their run in '82  (we talking pre- hipster/carpetbagger Brooklyn, folks) - that Rossi(?) guy was more popular than the zeppole guy at the Mount Carmel feast and the Pope combined  🇮🇹

the only match i ever attended was Ireland/Italy at Jints Stadium in the '94 WC (i'm half and half) ...

so i do see your point, but it's long been that way, i think  :shrug:

btw, great one down in Atlanta - they were heavily favored, but they've never beaten the Red Bulls ... hmmmm

they were prohib dogs in their last 2 (Uraguay/Chile), but got through ... are they that underestimated or did those 2 favorites just basically choke?

Brazil is much better than anything they've seen thus far, no?

Maybe , but he can still be such a defensive liability at times.  Not as much for his actual defense but his tendencies to get far upfield and not track back quickly (see Real Madrid vs Juve in the CL final).  Brazil has enough talent advantage over other teams in this tourney to take that gamble (watch Casimero on any counter).  He is still electric in attack.

Since the announcers were just talking about him, that lack of a pass from Coutinho is EXACTLY the type of play that is making his time at Barcelona tougher.  

 
Brasil has dominated.  Should be 4-1 and probably will be by the end of the match.   Don't see any signs of hope for Peru unless they ref wants to gift them another goal.

I don't think that's 100% true. There are plenty of Latinos born in the us that support the US over all other countries. That number goes up dramatically for the subsequent generations.

 
That ref def keeping Peru in this.  What a dumb red to get.  Definitely will make the last 20 minutes exciting.

I’m also fine with this. We have almost as many MEX fans among Anthem leadership as USA. Which makes for a ton of fun when there are games like tonight.

Also means plenty of fans of both MLS and Liga MX. More soccer for everyone!

Senegal is a semifinalist on the other side of the bracket.  Benin played them tough.
