When will Ole realize Lingard is never the answer? At least he was yanked off at the half this time. For a guy whos justification for being anywhere on this team is his work rate, he didnt even do that. Wondered around the field, never got goal side of any City player....
What a dismal first half for United. City ran rampant. City showing how to play 1-2 touch and pinging balls around. United meandering around the back. No movement, no passing.
Cantona said "watching United is like an old man having sex. everyone tries hard and at the end everyone is disappointed". Not sure I agree that everyone is trying hard.

UNITED NEEDS A MIDFIELD. 1) to take pressure off the defense by controlling the game. 2) to link up with the attack and actually open a d. Without a mf, united attackers (Rashford, Martial, Greenwood, James) will be wasted and their defense will continue to buckle under the siege.

What a wonderful goal. You really begin to appreciate it on replay. Watch the keeper, then watch the ball striker all of a sudden rush to take the kick. Brilliant to pull off in a rushed state.

I think Kroos either saw the keeper do this on a previous corner kick or saw it on film. The keeper walk about seems to be him trying to get his defense organized.

No one turns big teams into plucky minnows like Mourinho and he's going with what will effectively be a 5-3-2 today. Liverpool may have 75% of the possession, but I bet it ends 0-0, 1-1 or 0-1 for the bad guys.

Will be curious to see what the xG look like for this. Feel like Liverpool were lucky to get three points, but they had a couple huge chances in the first half that didn't go in too.

Thought spurs looked good, especially missing kane. Really should've score 3 or more..they let themselves down on the final touch after creating loads of great chances

Watching city vs AV on dvr. Even before the goals started pouring in, I was thinking about the difference here, and between other mid and lower tier teams...just about every touch from City players is perfect. Just about every pass is perfectly weighted and located.
The latter is so important for starting the attack, even when knocking it around the back. City is putting the ball exactly where the player can receive and attack into space for the the second ball. Villa is just passing the ball hopefully in the back, each pass not putting the receiving player in an optimal position for the next play...so it just gets passed hopefully somewhere else. Little things that add up to this kind of domination.

And kdb is just on another level.
Start of the second half, Villa has them under pressure, he receives the ball deep on the flank and while facing the sidelines somehow sees and finds a first time pass behind him...hit perfectly to open up and continue their possession.
Not to mention how effortlessly he glides by players with or without the ball. Reminding me of zidane in all the most glowing ways.

Its amazing what can happen with a creative MF. Mata did in 1 game what Lingard failed to do in over a year. I know hes getting older but at what point do you play him over the likes of Lingard and Andes?

I just did the math on how substantial this lead is.
City has 15 games remaining. If they win all 15 games, they will earn 45 points and finish with 93 points. They are currently at 48 points after 23 games, FWIW.
Liverpool needs 33 points to surpass that. With 17 games remaining, they need 10 wins. They would have to lose 7 of 17 to not hit that mark. Or lose/tie an even higher combination. And that's IF City were to go undefeated the rest of the year.
At this point, I'm not sure even @shader could jinx the league title.

Not that matters much at this point, but city dropping any points like today seals the crown that much tighter on Liverpool's noggin.

I've been saying that if they get through Wolves with a 17+ point lead the league is over. City dropping points today means that Liverpool can go 17 clear again with W-D or D-W in those two games.

Super game through 45 -- so many strong challenges and 50/50 battles. Intense. Ref's done a good job so far letting the game be competitive and edgy without having it devolve into a leg-kicking contest.

Few fun stats:
- 538 had this as a 2.4 to 1.2 match. Felt like Liverpool dominated more than that with the spell from 45-55 minutes.
- Liverpool are 31-1-0 in the last 32 EPL matches. That's nuts.
- GK Alisson Becker has more assists in his last seven matches than goals conceded.

Liverpool needs 10 wins out of final 16 matches.
Assuming they win the next 9 and City does the same, Liverpool gets to have City to get that 10th win and clinch.
It would be nuts if they clinch ahead of that matchup in early April.

Three games in a row there which would be great needle, Goodison derby, Woy at Anfield and away at City. Big days.
ETA: Biggest game of the season on Thursday though. Wolves away are tough.

Very deserved victory.
But feels like a few games in a row where they've looked vulnerable and the opposition doesn't take advantage. Martial was getting himself into some great spots and teammates just couldnt get him the ball.
But Liverpool are just so good, individually and collectively. They win every second ball, their transition defense is lightning quick and organized, every player gets their first touch spot on and hits their passes with the right shape, pace and location almost every time.
