Crowd was really into it.  Much more than I thought they would be. Lots of Atlanta fans as expected.

59k will probably be a season high, but I enjoyed it and will try to go 3-4 times a year.

His work rate is great and he puts himself in some good spots....but it seems like he gets jumped and runs I to 2 or 3 guys way more often than he should

Not sure how the deflection takes all that out, Can you explain why? 
I know they keep trying to tweak the rules but when the ball is played forward by the attacking player, he's off. 

Best description I saw of this on twitter:

"If he doesn't move, the ball hits him and he's offside. If he does move, he's an active participant, and he's offside."

As mad as Everton fans are at the call and VAR, they should be upset that their player just sat there watching and didn't get out of the play.

Had De Gea not had a howler in the 3rd min  :wall:

And Bruno is a stud.

And Fred could be a decent Kante type player.  He works hard, gets in good spots.  He is easily pushed off the ball but works his #### off to recover. His passing is improving.  

Its going to be interesting IF Pogba comes back.  Does Pogba get back in the team? Who sits?

Degea was committed to the deflection. Whether Sig's there making snow angels or not, degea is never getting that.

You are probably right, although the ball was moving slow enough he could of....  :D  (and you are right, I don't think de Gea is saving it. )

Still doesn't negate that he was in an offside position and between De Gea and the ball. In his line of site doesn't mean blocking his view, can just be influencing the opponent.

I think we agree on all of it.

And when they showed replays...duh-hey-yahs vision was definitely not blocked- he was watching the ball the entire time as the deflection sent him the wrong way. Sig's presence didn't visibly affect him at all...GK was going the wrong way on the initial shot, watching the ball, and couldn't ever get back to get it, regardless of what was going on in front of him

Sometimes there are plays that would be hard to argue with either outcome.  Odd to say but there have been a few.

Agreed with all this, but have to say I've seen many goals allowed where the passive offside guy was way more influential.  I recall numerous goals allowed (albeit w/out VAR) where the offside player clearly influenced the GK positioning, or at least distracted him.

And one thing...VAR is supposed to change things for clear and obvious mistakes.... Which this isn't.

True.  Makes you wonder what another look at some of these would have said via the VAR process?

Something else I noticed the other day and was reaffirmed yesterday, in the limitations on VAR usage: 

1) Ball played in, flag stays down, goal scored, goes to VAR and ruled out for offside
2) Ball played in, flag stays down, team gets a corner kick.  Does not go to VAR because it wasn't a goal but replays show he would have been ruled off, resulting corner leads to a goal

Much like Fred getting called for a handball that replays showed clearly wasn't, if the resulting free kick or corner is scored VAR isn't consulted.  Should the play then be reviewed since the call made in error resulted in a goal? I know its not but should the VAR guidelines include that or is that a slippery slope leading to everything being reviewed?  I mean handballs in the buildup to a goal get reviewed except when VVD does it...

The problem is that doesn’t really work for calls like passive offsides. The linesmen are instructed to keep their flags down. So any close offside call is going to be reviewed by design. Any passive offside call is going to require interpretation, so the standard there really can’t be clear and obvious.

Offside isn't one that has to adhere to the clear and obvious, hence the lines drawn manually with a margin of error and people offside by a toe or armpit....

Any of you guys ever go to an EPL morning show fanfest?  There is one in Philly in April that my son wants me to take him to. FYI - we live about 8 hours from Philly,  so it would kill the weekend for sure. I'm worried it'll be a bunch of standing around peppered with free Verizon water bottles and standing in line for 2 hours to kick a soccer ball for a chance to win a t- shirt. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I imagine it's like what you've described, which sounds awful...and yet, somehow would still be fun.

For sure my likely response is a NO. However, I figured I'd ask around just in case someone tells me I'm way off base and the experience is great.

I have not been but from reading about it, it sounds like a nice take if you are spending 30 minutes on public transportation to get to.

I have a feeling 16 hours is going to take the shine off unless you can combine this with some thing else you want to do, maybe go to a Union game or site see etc..

How old is your son? Philly has some cool stuff with kids, even without the fan fest. We've been trying to get back down there with our 8 & 12yos.

But yeah... That's a lot of travel.

Strangely,   Union are away that weekend. It's an NBC event though,  not MLS , so not that strange, I suppose.

Boy is 12. I'm not hearing "you can't miss it!"  So, I think we're gonna miss it.  Chicago/ Columbus/ Cincy are much closer if he needs his pro soccer fix. He'll probably have fun almost anywhere

can chelsea find a way to beat liverpool tomorrow...the watford domination has to make the pool vulnerable...

chelsea back end is terrible...

I think that vulnerability I've been talking about for Liverpool the last bunch of games has to do with the reliance on that extremely high line and the back 4 looking holey when when they do it. 

Every game in this stretch, I've watched opponents forward finding ridiculously clear channels to open goal, and just finding the telling ball to spring them. Conversely, the high line is also putting pressure on the ball and making that last ball more difficult to make- but even teams that rely on a more direct approach like Norwich to pukki just wouldn't make the pass.

Vdv's individual positioning and dominance, and those outside backs pace and ability help too...but the spaces are routinely there for every team willing to risk giving up possession on the more direct play to goal. Reminds me of Peps Barca at their height. A team that also lost random games to teams that went at them.

It's not a coincidence that Lovren was starting the game they ended up losing.

He's never been on the same page with the rest of the defense, both physically and mentally.
