✍ Knowshon Moreno to season ending IR. (4 Viewers)

Rotoworld quotes Philbin saying today that Moreno should be ready to go "full throttle" soon.

Of course, RW put a negative spin on the news, which may or may not be deserved. RW never liked Moreno in 2013, referring to him several times an an RB2 when he was top five overall (fantasy wise) pretty much all year.

This year is obviously a different situation, but I'm still gojng to monitor Moreno's progress whether RW likes him or not.

Yeah this line is funny:

Either out of shape or on the shelf for the majority of his Dolphins tenure, Moreno is shaping up as a thoroughly mediocre late-round fantasy option.
So for like two weeks of OTAs?

Reflecting on last year's RW blurbs for a moment, I think if FF players did the EXACT OPPOSITE of what that site recommended, they probably profited a great deal of $$$. It's good for injury information, but that's it.

Rant over. Back to Miller vs. Moreno vs. ????.

Placed on PUP for training camp.

He may not even make this team.

This is Lamar's show to lose again. Pouncy being out 8 weeks does not help matters for the overall OL. But atleast we may have to legit tackles now as well as a couple of guards in Shelly Smith and supposedly a vastly improved Dallas Thomas.

I think in this new offense you could see Lamar explode for a lot of big plays. But it all depends on Tannehill and getting teams to respect the passing game. Knowshon thus far has been a wasted 3MM signing. He came in fat, out of shape and injured.

Way to go Hicks. It remains to be seen if he has any impact on this team. I am not holding my breath.

Your crazy.

Playing behind Peyton Manning and that uber offense is not the same situation as down here is this crap fest of an offense we have. His situation stinks. And he is not quick nor elusive. He barely averaged 4 yards a pop with 4-5 in the box last year.

I had Knowshon for the last two years and rode that horse.....but sold him this off-season right after his trade to Miami as part of a nice package. there are far more better RB situations to be had later in the draft this year than Knowshon Moreno on the Dolphins.

I agree that he's not going to come close to what he did last year, obviously. But he has a pretty decent shot at outperforming his current ADP of RB31 IMO. To be a break even proposition at that price he needs about 900 total YFS, 30 catches, and 4 TDs give or take. If his knee appears to be good to go in preseason, those numbers seem pretty reasonable to me. He'll be in RBBC with Miller -- Miller is certainly a more dynamic runner but Moreno destroys Lamar as a receiver and particularly as a pass protector, and that will get him on the field quite a bit.If you want upside at your RB3 / RB4 spots, then yeah, look elsewhere. But Moreno's floor is pretty high in PPR relative to other RBs in that range due to his (+) ability on passing downs, and that's appealing when drafting upside down also.

Here is where I think it will be a challenge for Moreno. I just don't think he can create anything for himself and make something out of nothing (nor can Miller for that matter thus far) but Miller has far more explosiveness into the hole and at the second level. I think Miller has more upside in Lazor's offense than Moreno. I totally agree about pass protect and receiving. But just some nugget for some to ponder is Miller worked very hard this off-season improving his receiving ability. And his pass protect did improve over the course of last season. Remember he only had 50 carries his rookie year behind Reggie Bush. Lamar's upside is still pretty damn good if Moreno does indeed flop out of Miami before the season even starts.

Also the humidity and heat playing down here is nothing compared to Denver. He came in very overweight and out of shape. His conditioning is a huge red flag already and he has a illustrious history of being banged up.

Just keep that in mind.

We definitely disagree on Miller as a player, which is fine. I think we agree for the most part on Moreno -- he's pretty crap with the ball in his hands but pretty good at the grunt work. I do think that the "out of shape" stuff is probably overblown -- he was hurt and likely couldn't run this offseason. Moreno's a pro though -- prima donnas don't pass block like that -- and will be fine once the knee is right.

I think he's basically Daniel Thomas + better blocking / receiving, so I'm expecting a similar split as last year on running downs and the vast majority of the passing down work.

Miami is at a much lower altitude than Denver. Players have a tougher time playing at the high altitude than in high humidity. Plus you do know that Moreno played college ball in Georgia right.

He was likely "out of shape" because his knee was jacked up - Rotoworld is, as usual, blowing things out of proportion when they report on a guy they don't like.

Why are you expecting a similar split when there is a new OC, new offensive scheme and totally redone oline? Seems things are a going to be a great deal different.

Because Lamar Miller is fundamentally unsuited to a larger role than he saw last year. He runs soft and goes down on first contact and arm tackles. There needs to be another RB that can grind out tough yards, even if that guy is far less likely to bust a long run. If Moreno is banged up, it'll be Thomas. Again. If not Thomas or Moreno, it'll be someone else. Not Miller.

Other RBs at his ADP are Fred Jackson (you may have a point there), Khiry Robinson (nah), JEremy Hill, and DWill.

I would def take Moreno over the the last three. Not sure about FJax.

His production will be down, but honestly I could see him easily beating out Miller for the starting job. More experience, better in pass protection.

You really think he goes from a top-five finish at his position to being cut by the team that just signed him so they can hand the keys back to the guy they benched last year? Miller stunk last year. Guy is a few days away from playing and they are going to cut him? To make room for who exactly? The abundance of other talented skill position players on their roster?

He played college ball in Georgia. Plenty of heat and humidity there (not the same as Miami I know, but a lot closer to that than Denver).

How many years was he in Denver's climate? You just don't get used to this South Florida heat and humidity that quick. Especially when your overweight and out of shape. Dude came in here in bad shape as well as damaged.

Red flags all over the place already.

I'd avoid the whole backfield at this point. Line should be improved and Pouncey isn't as huge of a blow as it sounds, but I don't think any of these guys are good enough to produce.

I don't disagree. What I do think though is that Miller's upside as an impact player in this new offense has been greatly enhanced. Sherman was an abortion in how he called a game and how he used Miller.

If they utilize Miller in space like they should and get him consistent touches he will break off big, impact plays. The Dolphins lack chunk yardage plays. They have for over a decade. They finally have a couple of guys in Wallace and Miller who can stretch the field and break for huge gains and quick scores. They need that. I expect them to open it up and go for it far more with Lazor than the albatross that was Mike Sherman.

Miller may not be a great FF back...but I think he can be a big impact NFL RB and help this team win some games. For me at this point now he is a RB3 with potential to RB2 status if he get's more involved in the passing game and Moreno washes out. I like Moreno's intangibles. He is a banger and is not shy to lower his shoulder. We need that because Daniel Thomas is garbage. He is a true bust. We wasted a second rounder on him. I was hoping Moreno would spell the end his Dolphins tenure because I cringe every time I see that piece of crap trot onto the field and run straight standing up and go down in a heap after 2 yards. He stinks.

I agree about Miller going down on first contact. Something I know he was cognizant about this off-season and I hope he worked on running through ankle tackles. I also think you will see better awareness from him in his second full season. Again his rookie season he barely saw the field.

Again I think we are around the same ball park. I was far more gung ho last year on Miller, but he did not make the most of it. Some was clearly his fault, but also the teams scheme, OL and OC were awful.

Not a great fantasy situation though. I would not even look at either of them anywhere before the 6th-7th round. A lot of better options out there IMO I rather gamble on.

If the rumors about Spiller being on the block are true the Dolphins would be nuts not to make a play.

You put Spiller in Lazor's version of Chip Kelly's offense and we might finally see his potential reached.

He will be on the PUP until about week 3 of the preseason according to Chris Perkins of the Sun Setninel-Ft Lauerdale. I also have heard that the OL is borderline putrid right now with Shelly Smith taking snaps at Center and Nate Garner next in line for some work. I also am hearing Dallas Thomas is the RG, that's not good. I was hoping Billy Turner would make the transition and take one of those starting RG/LG spots. Daryn Colledge at LG from what I am reading with the 1st team unit.

Doesn't sound good but I am not reading or hearing anything about Moreno not making this team, I think Miami needs him especially in pass protection.

Putrid O-line, young potential FC QB....favors Moreno as he's head and shoulders better in pass pro than Miller. Let Moreno sit and incubate while Miller's preseason value climbs, I think Moreno will end up being the play.

Yeah. As a Dolphins fans I would love nothing more than Knowshon to make an impact on this team. Again though his past history save for a nice run at the end of 2012 and then a career year in 2014 in an offense that was record breaking I am not sold Knowshon is going to help a lot. This team needs playmakers. Wallace is one, Clay in another and Miller has all the upside to be a homerun hitter as well. Jarvis Landry IMO will have a big impact long term as well. Love that kid.

Knowshon can be that 3rd down back we need badly. But 1st and second down...I am not sold he is a truly effective runner (he was good last year but not spectacular, so much so Denver did not even resign him after a career year, what does that tell you) and his sample size is far larger than Miller's. Lamar IMO was not utilized properly last season. It remains to be seen if he can indeed make a significant jump this season and the fact the OL is again in total flux does not help.

But he has a golden opportunity in a new offense to seize control with Knowshon on the shelf and Thomas being Thomas.

I really like Milller around his current ADP, but Miller is one of Rotoworld's guys and they LOVE to talk him up (apologies if you already knew that and are being sarcastic)

Ted, I did know that. I guess I was being somewhat sarcastic and somewhat realizing that Moreno may not be worth the draft positions I've been using on him.

http://www.miamiherald.com/2014/07/27/4258330/miami-dolphins-lamar-miller-hopes.html

By Adam H. Beasley abeasley@MiamiHerald.comFirst Lamar Miller got bigger. And then he got Shady.

With Bill Lazor running the offense, there’s a hope in Dolphins camp that Miller can play the role of LeSean “Shady” McCoy — the Eagles’ running back who was wildly productive during Lazor’s year with coach Chip Kelly in Philadelphia.

Count Miller among the hopeful. And he went straight to the source to find out how to make it happen.

In the days leading up to training camp, Miller sat down with the league’s leading rusher for advice on how to thrive in the system Lazor has brought from Philly to South Florida.

“He told me that the opportunity is great,” Miller said Sunday. “They always keep the defense on their toes. Once you get the ball, you’ve got to take advantage of the opportunity.”

He will certainly get plenty of those this fall.

When Knowshon Moreno signed with Miami in the offseason, many penciled the former Bronco in as the Dolphins’ starting running back.

It was way premature. Instead, Miller has been clearly ahead of Moreno on the depth chart every step of the way since and might even be pulling away.

Moreno hasn’t practiced yet in camp, still healing from arthroscopic knee surgery.

Miller, meanwhile, is healthy — and stronger than ever. Miller, who ranked 24th among running backs in yards after contact last year (2.06 per carry), put on between six and eight pounds of muscle this offseason.

His goal: Break more tackles, which will improve both his rushing total (709) and average (4.0) from a year ago.

“He looks good, he looks stronger than he’s ever been,” Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said. “I don’t think he’s sacrificed any speed whatsoever.”

Miller proved that on the first day of live hitting at camp. During team drills Sunday, he took the handoff and simply ran away for a blitz before it could get to him, breaking loose for what might have been a touchdown in a game.

That rare ability has many in the Dolphins organization still bullish on the University of Miami ballcarrier after two nondescript pro seasons.

Miller was the change-of-pace back behind Reggie Bush as a rookie, then won the starting job over Daniel Thomas in Year 2. Many within the organization thought that Miller would be the league’s next breakout player, but it didn’t happen.

Why? There are plenty of reasons: a pass-happy approach by then-coordinator Mike Sherman, arguably the worst offensive line in team history, and Miller’s trouble creating for himself when a clear hole wasn’t there.

Sherman is gone, the line is revamped and the brawnier Miller now has stiffer competition, at least on paper. Moreno, whenever he does get healthy, will get a chance to push Miller for depth-chart supremacy.

But if Dolphins brass intended to light a fire under Miller with the signing, it worked. He worked with fellow Hurricane Frank Gore during the offseason, and associates rave about his renewed focus and motivation.

“I think competition is the best thing for a guy,” Miller said. “It brings the best out of someone.”

If Miller wants to be Miami’s version of McCoy, he’d be well-suited to mimic his friend’s consistency.

While Miller had 60 or more rushing yards in eight games last year, he was held under 10 yards in four. McCoy, meanwhile, went over 100 yards seven times but never had less than 38.

Miller spent part of the summer trying to understand why. He watched McCoy’s game film from last year to see what worked in the wide-open, fast-paced system.

What Miller saw made him happy — and excited.

“I think Coach Lazor’s doing a great job at just getting the playmakers the ball, keeping the chains moving and helping this team win games,” he said.

Miller has a chance to do some things in this offense but a putrid OL with 5 new players who have not only never played together but along the way they lost a Pro Bowl caliber Center with a torn labrum in his hip(Go see Percy Harvin 2013 fr how that injury can unfold) and the word is he is gonna miss 8 games. So at the LG-C-RG spots where you need to be strong to help the running game, Miami is perhaps the worst in the NFL. Find me a worse starting trio at LG/C/RG in the NFL right now...and then when you are done doing that, name the starting trio for Miami because the coaches don't know it yet, the beat writers are petrified from what they are seeing so far, none of that spells success for anyone in Miami this year.

Philbin is a bottom 5 HC in the NFL, he was way down on the list of guys Miami originally wanted to hire starting way back with Harbaugh, so compare Philbin to Harbaugh and you see why Miami is about where they are. Joe Philbin is a nice man, probably a good OC or QB coach to have on staff, I don't see head coach and I don't know many Phinsfans who say otherwise, if they do let's hear from them.

So maybe neither of these guys are gonna be worth much. Nothing more than an RB3/4 for most drafting them I would assume.

This is hardly a settled backfield with Lazor having no ties to Daniel Thomas or Lamar Miller. Knowshon Moreno was brought in because of what he was able to do with the Bronco’s last season but showed up to organized team activities out of shape. I have lingering concerns about his recovery from his ACL injury that may have taken away some of his ability as a runner. The Bronco’s had no interest in re-signing him despite how well he performed for them last season. I have to think there is a reason for that. Moreno also did not get much interest as a free agent before ultimately signing a contract with the Dolphins. Damien Williams rookie draft stock

Agreed. Philbin is not a leader of men. Great QB coach, great guy, high character, not HC material.

At all.

As for the OL. Don't forget KC overhauled almost it's entire line but nobody is talking about that at all. I hope and pray Dallas Thomas, Shelly Smith and Juwan James can come together along with our new big boy Brandon Albert at LT we took from KC. Losing Pouncy was huge and we can only hope he is back for the 8th game (we have a bye week so he will miss 7 if he indeed comes back in October). I have seen patch work lines come together many times for many other teams. But since the Dolphins have such a horrid rep (and rightfully so) there is a fair amount of pessimism surrounding the offense.

3 critical things have to happen for Miller to be the breakout player a lot of us down here feel he can be.

1) OL comes together and flourishes under Lazors new system

2) Ryan Tannehill takes the critical next step and becomes a true leader both in the huddle and with his play. He must make teams fear the pass by hitting Clay, Hartline underneath and going up top to Wallace and hitting those easy TD's. Also I think the rookie from LSU at WR jarvis Landry is going to have a huge impact this year. He is NFL ready and I feel by mid season will over take Brandon Gibson to start in the slot.

3) Lamar Miller taking advantage of the opportunity and hitting some early season home runs. If he can come out of the gate fast he won't look back. But if he struggles early the coaching staff will have a short leash with Knowshon and yes Damien Williams on the roster. I think Daniel Thomas is toast (has been since he got he for intensive purposes).

A lot of things need to line up, but at his current ADP Miller can represent some great value as a RB3.

Took him 19.10 in a startup and still feel dirty.
Lol.....at that spot? Well worth the risk. But i can understand feeling dirty. If he does not come back in the third week of preseason in shape and turning some heads.....like I said before he may get cut or at least be put on the regular season PUP list.

Well, this sucks. I had zero faith in Miller, so I was figuring Moreno would sneak in and take the starting job like he did in Denver last year.

But that ain't gonna happen if he's struggling to walk.

All beat reporters and those covering the camps have anointed Miller the starter for what it's worth. Moreno is of course not there but nobody feels Moreno is starting week 1.

Miller goes around the 8th round, that will move up if he being the starter IMO although we have already talked ad nauseum how awful the interior of this OL is.

I expect Moreno to be put on PUP but he has value once he's healthy. For one we'll know whether Miller is starting material by then. If he's not then Moreno could have a major role when he's back. Miami's OL issues are a problem but Moreno is worth the gamble at a cheap enough price.

My concern is they are saying there is no timetable for his knee surgery. It was supposed to be 4 weeks, he's at 6 right now and no timetable to return. I am worried now unlike a few posts up that perhaps Moreno doesn't make this team due to injury or maybe they put him on the real PUP till week 6/7.

Miller has not shown he can be super special yet on the NFL level and then you add in a putrid OL especially the interior and Moreno owes might be happy to play the savior role come week 6. Miami is having a terrible camp on offense.

If he get PUP'ed then his earliest return would be week 8 on Oct 26 at the Jags. That's almost 3 months more for his knee to heal.

At this point I imagine he's going very late in drafts (I got him at 19.10 in a dynasty startup) so there's not much risk if he does nothing this year.

I'm cutting bait on him. Didn't like his new situation in Miami and potential regular season PUP candidate? Pass.
He's on my IR.
How does that work? My league has IR, but I think the player actually has to be on IR to do that. This gives me some hope.
In some of my leagues a player on NFL IR or on the PUP list can be placed on IR. It only makes sense because sometimes player never get activated from PUP.

OMG! He's never going to play again. He's going to get cut. He's going to miss the entire preseason. Lamar Miller looks like Gayle Sayers. OMG!

Dolphins activated Knowshon Moreno (knee) from active/PUP.

Nearly seven weeks removed from a June scope, Moreno is finally ready to make his training camp debut. Now he has a month to prove that last season's success wasn't a mere result of the Peyton Manning offense. Lamar Miller has shown well with the starters throughout the offseason and into camp, running in the LeSean McCoy role as the Dolphins move to an Eagles-esque scheme under new OC Bill Lazor. If truly healthy, Moreno will bring a physical element and superiority in pass protection. He'd best be used in a short-yardage and passing-down role -- we're not expecting him to catch Miller for the starting gig.
In less than a week this went from Moreno not playing in the preseason to back at full practices. We've heard this story before with Miller IMO. Moreno's probably going to be pretty useful again.

RB2? Moreno's not a world beater, but I have a feeling Lazor's offense has a lot of short passing, and Moreno's by far their best asset in the passing game and their best RB between the tackles -- IF HEALTHY.

Sure he lost Manning and the Broncos, which was as good a situation as it could get. Last season Miami only ran the ball 349 times, vs. 594 pass attempts. Philbin the other day stated he'd like to see at least a 60/40 split, with running making up 40% of the plays at least. If they don't improve at all (totally plausible) there's ~950 plays. 40% would be 380 rushes. Miller took 177 last year with no credible threat on the roster. I think Moreno could conceivably push for 200+, still leaving 150+ for Miller.

They threw the ball to RBs 63 times last year. I would expect in Lazor's system that number increases as he preaches tempo and moving the chains.

Upside for Moreno -- 230 carries and 50 receptions? Reasonable projection as the lead back? 180 carries, 40 receptions... 1000 total yards with goalline work. Useful.

Been trying all off-season to trade Moreno for peanuts or as a throw in and always gets thrown out of any deal. I've got till tonight to decide, but I'm thinking of just cutting him despite the news. I kind of wish he was still PUP, that would make it easier.

 good post

Still feel like Miller will be the lead back for now, Moreno assuming he is healthy and in game shape, he can still be useful for Miami and the fan base, not sure I can envision big numbers for him. Moreno was paid like a starter, we'll see.
