12 Years A Slave (1 Viewer)

I was just having a conversation last night about who the next great black leading actor was and Chiwetel Ejiofor is my pick. I'd love to see him maybe as the next Bond.

I wish I could remember the name of it, but years ago I saw a similar movie involving a Canadian black girl. Her father thought he was hooking her up with a wealthy white guy in an arranged marriage but, in fact, he sold her into slavery.

That said, is this a new movie? Is Steve McQueen still alive??

Finally, what we really need is a movie that shows how Christianity was sold to Caribbean slaves as a way to keep them compliant... Yes, it was. "This life sucks, yes, but if you're obedient, everything will be great in the afterlife."!

They don't have time for that down south. The preferred method is a beating.

Speaking of arranged marriages, I recommend "The Life of Pi" to guys who have problem with their mail order brides.

the "that said" part made me laugh out loud.

That guy died in 1980... Wtf... Only ~50 years old??? Heck, I have already outlived him ! How old is this stupid movie, anyhow? Do I really need to go to imdb for that??

Shame is good, and I've heard of him and Focus developing a Fela biopic for awhile now with Ejiofor playing him. Hopefully, that's next.

Idk how this ends, but from the title I would imagine it has a happy ending.

It looks good though, I'll definitely see it.

A movie I'm really looking forward to is Spike Jonze's new movie 'Her' starring Joaquin Phoenix, I'm a pretty big fan of tragedy done right, and this looks like it will be brutal.

Saw it last night and expect it to win Best Picture. Normally I can find something to criticize but nothing stands out as a serious fault.

BTW, this is possibly the best horror movie I've ever seen. Sounds strange but change the setting and characters this is a horror movie.

That's there. It's an extremely anti-religion movie IMO.

Captive Heart: The James Mink Story (1996 TV movie)

starring Louis Gossett Jr., Kate Nelligan, Ruby Dee, Peter Outerbridge, Winston Rekert

IMDb synopsis:

James Mink is a black man in Canada who has built a very successful livery business. He has a white wife and a beautiful daughter, Mary. An excellent match is arranged with an American businessman, but when he takes Mary across the border, his true character emerges: He sells her into slavery. James and Elizabeth must go to Virginia to rescue their daughter.

He's a good actor but he's been around for awhile and I dont see him ever becoming a household name. Of course a Best Actor Oscar might change that.

I really liked him in Talk To Me, Dirty Pretty Things, Redbelt, and Four Brothers.

You guys are reminding me of one of my high school classmates who thought the Eric Davis of the 49ers and the Eric Davis of the Reds were the same person.

Makes me want to know the whole story and not just what is in the movie.

Finally came to my local theater so I went to see it. Good movie and a must see for those interested in American history and such.

Early front runner for best picture and it is going to be nearly impossible to beat. It should pretty much sweep the awards season.

My biggest problem was with Brad Pitt. He was horribly miscast and really shouldn't have even been in the film. It is such an engaging film and truly draws you into it, I honestly didn't even realize that the antagonist was Michael Fassbender until the credits, but then while you are completely engrossed in this deeply moving and heart rending story BOOM!!! BRAD PITT it completely takes you out of the story. And I also thought it was a bit self serving, seeing as how he was an executive producer, to get himself cast as the benevolent white savior.

Still, it's one of the best films I have seen in a long time.

Agree 100%.

He did a good job with the role, but damn did it destroy the illusion that you were there. Luckily it was near the end of the movie.

Saw the movie this last week at an early showing. Only about 50 people in the theater and most of them were black. In one scene the slave gets the whip away from the white master and begins beating him. Several black people started screaming to "kill him". I was a little tense from that point on.

Very emotional movie but very good! I figured it will win pic of the year or some other top category.

Glad I didn't have people like that in my theater since I enjoyed the relaxing nature of the film.

Didn't think their was enough character development. A lot of the scenes just left me cold.

Fassbender and Dano didn't do anything for me.

Thought the last two scenes could have packed more of an emotional punch as well.

Maybe I just had too high of expectations.

Worked for the peasants

Great way to exploit slaves like Gibson exploited Christ, to each their own.
what the hell does that even mean?
It means exploitation of whipping the slaves rather than the narrative being filled in. Gibson decided to do the same in the Passion.

I would encourage everyone to read the book, it's so much better and huge chunks have been omitted for the film, I was massively disappointed with it. Best film? The critics have been kind but there are much better films this year.

All is Lost comes to mind but maybe Redford will win best actor finally.

Saw this over the weekend and it was a powerful film. Think it will sweep the awards this year.

ETA - Only thing I didn't like in the film was Brad Pitt.

So it's far from a perfect film but you think it will sweep the Oscars? Nominated yes, sweep I hope not. McQueen getting an Oscar would be the worst since Jaime Foxx won.

My issue was not with his acting or the role just that they gave the role to Brad Pitt. As soon as he showed up you knew he would be the person to lead to his freedom. They should have picked someone else for that piece. Given Pitt the role of lazy/drunk former overseer.

Thought it was great. Most disturbing thing for me was a mother brought her 6 year old to see it.

I heard there's a brutal rape scene in the beginning that is borderline snuff porn. True?

I think I'll pass on this one.

Bad things happen and a lot of it will make you uncomfortable but I would not call it gratuitous. Although there is a scene where a slave gets whipped that qualifies as absolutely horrific

It's a film worth seeing.

Jamie Foxx was fantastic portraying Ray Charles and that Oscar was well deserved. There's been plenty of worse winners this century

Fantastic film. Something like this deserves to win the Best Picture because it will be remembered for years to come. Seemed very "real" and true to the times. Showed some good white folks existed back then as well.

Great movie but....

Not sure what it was about it but I didn't think it was a great as everyone made it out to be. I just can't put my finger on it but there was something that was just a bit off.

I think part of it is that, as a history guy, I didn't see anything "educational". I knew the story. I knew the horrors slaves went through.

It's hard to put into words but I guess it was like watching "42".

And I'm sure I'll catch hell for this but I've only seen two McQueen movies. This one and Shame. He's very good but I'm not sold on him being "great".

He wasn't better than Leo in The Aviator, he was robbed that year playing Howard Hughes. I don't believe in Jaime Foxx as an actor but that's my opinion, he can be funny but I don't like much of what he does on screen. He also was not better than Johnny Depp, Clint Eastwood, and Don Cheadle that year as well but I'll save us the agony.

KP, you watch a lot of movies and offer some good POV, I respect your opinion, I just woefully disagree. Since 2000 there has been some pretty wretched years for best actor but 2004 was not one of them.

To each his own.

There's a handful of Dicaprio and Cheadle performances I prefer to both of those films. Hell, Leo in Great Gatsby and Aviator could almost be interchangeable, and I say that as someone who typically enjoys Dicaprio (and Scorsese...Aviator, not so much). I dont think youre hearing many people clamoring Leo to get nominated for Gatsby this year.

Clint just played Clint in Million$Baby, Im honestly not even sure why he got nominated. I thought he was better in Gran Torino (which he didnt get nominated for). I havent seen Finding Neverland so no comment on Depp in that.

Maybe 04 wasnt a bad year, but I wouldnt call it a strong year competition wise either. Name wise, sure, big names. Great performances, not so much. I enjoyed Foxx the most by a lot in this group.

I have no problem agreeing with that at all. Shame was an interesting character study and all but overall it was a middling film. Cary Mulligan singing New York, New York was enough to effectively destroy that film. He only has one other feature film, Hunger, I haven't seen it either but it seems like an interesting story.
