I think this Sage Rosenfels to NY talk brings up an interesting point. There are #2 QBs that are great backups. And there are #2 QBs that are not great backups and waiting for their shot to be a #1.
I think Rosenfels is a great backup. When I say backup, I think of a guy that can hold down the job for 2-4 weeks while the starter gets back in. Guys like Marc Bulger, Jon Kitna, Chad Pennington, Mark Brunell, and Kerry Collins all fall into this group. They aren't going to be great, but they're not going to hurt you badly. For a good team, especially one with a good defense, this is often the ideal backup. And clearly, a ton of that is guided by experience.
You have other #2 QBs like Tim Tebow and Jimmy Clausen who may be #1 guys at some point, but they do very little to help hold down the fort if the starter is gone. Jackson isn't as bad in that respect at those guys, but he's not good in my opinion.
It feels to me that the difference there really is how good the team is. If Denver loses Orton, the rest of the team probably isn't good enough to carry the day even if they had a good backup. For them, it's probably the time to see what the new guy can do and rebuild.
If Tony Romo was out, Dallas likely is good enough to hold things down with Kitna for a few games.
Thoughts?
