2006 Tampa Bay Bucs thread (1 Viewer)

Seems like it's down to Tampa and GB for Woodson, and there doesn't seem to be much mutual interest between the Pack and Charles.

So what the hell is the holdup?
Bucs Familiar Faces, Success Could Lure Woodson

IRA KAUFMAN

4/5/2006

TAMPA - Tampa Bay's status as a division champion and Charles Woodson's familiarity with Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen could prove to be critical factors in his choosing between the Bucs and Packers, according to the agent for the four-time Pro Bowl cornerback.

Negotiations continued Wednesday between the Bucs and Woodson, the first rookie Gruden welcomed to the NFL as a head coach, but the Packers also remain interested in the former Heisman Trophy winner.

"Charles wants to win, and that's the bottom line," said Woodson's representative, Carl Poston. "He went 12-0 his last year at Michigan and won a national championship. Now, he wants that Super Bowl ring and he wants to join a team that's committed to winning."

There are indications the unrestricted free agent may take his time before making a decision.

Woodson, who turns 30 in October, earned a combined $19.3 million as Oakland's franchise player the past two seasons before hitting the open market. He has already visited One Buc Place and Green Bay, with Seattle rumored to be another potential suitor.

"I would think the familiarity between Charles, Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen is a big plus for the Bucs," Poston said. "We want to get a deal done, but it has to be the right fit at the right numbers. Green Bay probably is in better shape cap-wise, but you never know. Sometimes, those things can be deceiving."

A broken leg sidelined Woodson for the final 10 games in 2005, but he is still considered one of the league's elite defensive backs.

While the Packers are likely to keep him at corner, Woodson probably would be shifted to safety if he joins the Bucs, who have one of the NFL's premier cornerback tandems in Ronde Barber and Brian Kelly.

Poston suggested Woodson's role in the secondary wouldn't be a deal-breaker.

"I think it depends more on the system," he said. "Bruce told me a long time ago that Charles is such a phenomenal athlete, he could probably be the best free safety in the league if he wanted to."

The Packers may have more money to offer Woodson, but the Bucs appear to have several advantages.

Green Bay is coming off a 4-12 season and Brett Favre's status remains uncertain. The Packers play in frosty Lambeau Field, and their defense allowed an average of 21.5 points per game last year.

The Bucs had the NFL's top-rated defense and won the NFC South with an 11-5 mark.

After leaving the Wolverines after his junior year, Woodson was the fourth player drafted in 1998, Gruden's first season on the Raiders sideline.

"As a football player, Woodson is such a unique guy," Gruden said last week. "He can stand in there and play man-to-man, old-school bump-and-run coverage with the best of them, and he will knock you out."

If he truly wants to win more than the paycheck, I can't see how he would go to Green Bay.

Quez--don't forget the 'flexible' schedule on Sunday nights now. If they're competing, the Pitt, Atlanta, Chicago and/or Seattle game(s) could end up on NBC.

I think there is a possibility the Washington game could get moved back as well.I don't like having to go to Chi. in December

I do like the bye before the road game, and the opener at home

I have the Bucs at 13-3, dropping @NYG, @PIT, @CHI.

8-8. At this rate every team in the NFL will be 10-6 to 13-3. I don't think this is a 13-3 team but 11-5 is within reason. You can PM hate clips and I'll admit I'm a stooge if they go any better than 10-6.

I fixed it for reality for ya. Losing to Cleveland? This early in the game, with all but speculation... no way in heck.

Please leave your blinded hate at the door.

I wanted to ask Rob Rang a question, and thought it would be best to compile all our questions into one. What would you guys be interested in knowing?

I probably want to ask him something along the lines of if he sees us maintaining our streak of not going D 1st round. Our obvious need is O line, and the draft is deep at that position and drafting someone like McNeil is the obvious answer. But, with the recent restructuring of Anthony Davis, acquiring Tucker, and getting Kenyatta back, is that enough? Or, should we get younger on D, with say an Ernie Simms, Cromardie, or another guy that can learn behind the Vets. How would the possible signing of Woodson shake things up? What are some wild card picks? TE, WR? Since there is no one need we must address in the 1st do you think they will stick to a best possible player philosophy?

Thats what I got, feel free to quote and modify the question, or correct all of my gramatical errors (MLB)

I don't hate the Bucs nor the blind. Just don't think they are 13-3 material.

Anybody going to the Ray Jay FREE draft day party? Well, free until you consume 5-6 $8 beers before the Buc's pick.

Went last year, may just sit home and enjoy it this year. Little more fun when you have a top-5 pick (although, of course, the previous year blows).

I'll be there for the 5K run and finish on to the field and thru the Cheerleader tunnel, but leaving after that....will have forgotten all about the draft at that point!!Edit to add: Charles Woodson was spotted yesterday eating lunch with Bruce...hopefully back in town to sign a deal.

Good luck Gump, I will be finishing my 5th pint of Guiness by then, so I may not make it either. :banned:

Dam Quez...The run starts at 8:00! It's actually really laid back (not like Gasparilla)...a lot of people actually walk most of the way, and it's course takes you thru the shaded park just north of the stadium. And I would hope it won't be in the 90's...yet...Believe me...the Warmup with the Cheerleaders and the finish are well worth it.

When I was at FSU my freshman fall, I got up to where I could run/jog 13+ laps... little over 3 miles.

I quit my part-time job at Outback because it was interfering with my schoolwork, and have since started taking back up the running/jogging. Got me a nice new pair of running shoes.

I went for a run the other day and ran about a half mile and thought my guts were going to explode. Guess I have some work to do to get back in shape.

Still would be cool to catch some of the FBGers at the draft event, although I may just go to my brother's place in Del Ray (or nowhere at all)... They hold this every year I presume? This is the first I think I've heard of it, and I haven't ever been to a public Buccaneer outing (other than a few preseason games and that TOTALLY KICK ### Monday night game with Shaun King v. the Rams--the night where Faulk had 4 TDs and King led that amazing 4th quarter comeback...)

You know, that gets me wondering.

How would you rate the top 5 or 10 Bucs games of all time?

I have the notable handicap of being short about 20 years of Buccaneer football games, but I'd have to put that one right up there.

Of the ones I can remember:

1) 19-0 @PHI Week 1 2003.

2) @PHI NFC Championship game Playoffs '02 (technically in '03).

3) v. Raiders in the SB.

4) Didn't get to see it, but the Redskins game of last year I heard was amazing.

5) Monday night v. Rams in '00.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some good ones.

My personal faves:

1) 1st game my dad took me and the whole family to. 1979 Bucs 31- NYG 3. Was right behind Larry Mucker when he grabbed a TD from Doug Williams. Simms rookie year.

2) 1981 or 82 MNF win over the Dolphins. Was in the stands again.

3) Pewter Power debut, 1997 opener vs 49ers. We took out Young and Rice in that game and won to boot. Was there live as well.

4) Bucs vs Rams 2000 & 2002.

5) Bucs vs Eagles 1979 Divisional Playoffs 24-17 victory. Ricky Bell's TD was awesome. Saw it on TV.

Saddest moment: Bucs 0 - Rams 9 the week after. And yes TE Jimmie Giles DID grab that TD!

And how about some of the saddest games?

1) Gotta think that 1998 (i think) drubbing at oakland... it was 42-0 when I turned it off.

2) The 1999 NFC Championship game to STL, the 6-5 Bucs win that should have been...

3) Have to rank the 2003 MNF game against Peyton Manning on Monday night up there.... those injuries that night and the demoralization of our defense ruined that season.

4) the TB/GB game in 2001 I believe where Grammatica missed the FG that cost the bucs Homefield in the playoffs, had to go to PHI and get whooped. Dungy sat on the ball and everybody figured Automatica wouldn't miss and then he did.

5) Have to throw the 28-0 NWE loss last year in there.... that was a pure mismatch.

I had turned it off when they were up by 4 TDs with like 8 minutes to go... I don't remember if I turned it back on or not..

Here's the link, MLB:http://www.buccaneers.com/events/draftdaydash.aspx

It get's bigger every year, but still a cool laid back thing. In addition to the Cheerleaders, I've seen Fred McGriff, Rich McKay, Casey Weldon, Brad Culpepper running....

Not sure if you guys saw this tidbit:

The Boston Globe reports today that if they do sign Woodson the Bucs will deal one of their corners.

"Woodson's best offer is from Green Bay, though Tampa Bay has also made an offer, perhaps looking at him as a free safety. But the feeling among industry sources is that if Woodson chooses the Bucs, they will deal one of their corners to free Woodson to play his natural position."

Boston Globe LINK

3 options come to mind:

1) We are looking to trade Barber before his contract ends next year

2) We are looking at trading a younger player (Nicholson, Adams, Patrick) to try to win now with the D in tact

3) This guy doesn't have a clue

I would go with #3 as well. I don't have a problem with moving one of the guys you mentioned under the #2 option, but I don't see TB messing with chemistry and moving Barber. Also, I don't see Barber's contract demands being any more extravagent that Woodsons, so you're not saving any significant money. I think TB has set a price and thankfully are not willing to pay an over-inflated premium just to get Woodson. If Woodson wants the huge contract but no chance for a SB in the next 2-4 years, Green Bay is your team. Otherwise I think Tampa plays the waiting game and stays put with their offer.

The winner of the smartest signing in all of free agency (after Adam Vinatieri, of course) is Tampa Bay.

In 2004, I would argue that the most physically dominating guard in pro football was Toniu Fonoti of the Chargers. He's a massive (6-foot-4 and 350 pounds) and mean drive-blocker with some personality issues. Coaches aren't always sure how much he likes the game. San Diego traded him to Minnesota last year and the Vikings let him go to free agency after the season. So Tampa Bay took a chance on him -- for a measly bonus of $25,000 to sign and a 2006 salary of $535,000. Imagine if he works out and plays to his 2004 form, which is probably a long shot. But if he craps out by the end of training camp, all the Bucs are out is $25,000. If he plays the year, they've got a great player, potentially. Those are the kinds of deals good teams make, knowing full well they could backfire. But if this one backfires, no harm, no foul.

I agree. Fonotui is the Hovan of 2006. If this guy can play as well as he did when he was in San Diego the Buc's could easily be the top team in the NFC. If we get C. Dub, and this guy does well we will have a dynasty

Hope Springs Eternal.... :lmao:

I like the FB signing, I am just worried there may not be enough balls for everybody. Pittman, Cady, Sowell, and A-Train.

PR is saying we may take one of the top guards, as they have the highet chance of making an immediate impact. Marcus Mcneil probably wouldn't win a starting spot over Kenyatta or A. Davis, and a defensive player is almost certainly a lock to ba a back-up.

Where as a good guard could compete with Mahan, and Wade immediately.

I hate when my team lacks balls too.
