2008 $35,000 Subscriber Contest (3 Viewers)

For people who picked three defenses, three TEs, and three QBs> you realize only one from each position counts every week, right? How people don't put most of their roster spots into WR just baffles me, year in and year out.
Just because you have two QBs, it doesn't mean either one will give you good production every week. Even stud QBs don't put up great numbers every week. You realize this, right?
Do QB's ever get injured?

Looks good to me

The FBG contest is worth the price of a subscription alone.
Thanks Kleck. I'd agree with you. I think lots of people see it and think there has to be a catch. No catch. Just a huge bonus for folks that subscribe. It's not some cheesy prize with a zillion people competing for it. It's only FBG subscribers to the pay content and it's $35,000. It's a great deal.If I didn't do what I do, I'd buy a subscription just for this contest.J
I buy the subscrip primarily because contest is so damn great; then i discover stuff like the dynasty buy and sell articles and deep IDP analysis. I'll keep coming back for more, but dont lose the contest!
Totally agree. Wasn't sure if our league was going to survive this year and I still would have gotten my subscription just for the contest. I'm just mad that our draft was early, so I hadn't spent a lot of time getting familiar with the numbers to find all the sleeper picks this contest makes you aware of.

Let me know when this is locked so I can post my winning team...do I have to claim this on my taxes?

In today's NFL, they get banged up quite a bit.

So you might want to have more than one or two in this contest?

This is my third year, and I am avoiding the big money players this year. Spending a lot of money on a top five player at any position is too risky in a best ball format.

QB - David Garrard - 14

QB - Jake Delhomme - 12

QB - Kurt Warner - 5

Warner should be on every roster. It'd be crazy not to risk $5 on a guy that has top 5 potential every game he plays. Garrard and Delhomme aren't spectacular, but guys like Peyton Manning and Drew Brees had a bunch of bad games last year at a high entry price.

RB - Marion Barber III - 40

RB - Thomas Jones - 21

RB - Fred Taylor - 18

RB - Ricky Williams - 8

RB - Steve Slaton - 1

You have to like Barber's price here. I like a healthy RB on one of the best offenses in the NFL. I think Jones has a solid bounceback year with Favre at the helm.

WR - Anquan Boldin - 26

WR - Brandon Marshall - 23

WR - Donald Driver - 16

WR - Patrick Crayton - 13

WR - Jabar Gaffney - 7

WR - David Patten - 5

WR - Muhsin Muhammad - 5

Boldin is angry and Warner is starting. I liked Brandon Marshall before he got his suspended. Now I want to marry him. Driver is the WR to own in Green Bay, not Jennings. Driver is one of the most underrated WRs in the NFL. People seem to be down on Crayton, but with Witten and Owens drawing a lot of coverage, Crayton will have a good year. I think Muhammad is a real bargain.

TE - Zach Miller - 15

TE - Ben Utecht - 5

TE - Dustin Keller - 2

I'm not crazy about picking young Miller as my top TE, but it appears as though he and Russell are really locked in. Keller is a steal and will certainly appear on a lot of rosters.

PK - Kris Brown - 2

PK - Olindo Mare - 1

TD - Minnesota Vikings - 8

TD - Buffalo Bills - 3

I believe the numbers would show a significant gain with 3 vs. 2 choices for 1 starter each week (i.e., for QB, TE, K, TD). Didn't have enough roster spots to do that for all of those positions, so went with 2 top Ks.

Well, I thought I had a pretty good lineup- then I read Verbal Kint's post in this thread re: the stud TE; oh well, it's still fun, and should be competitive.
Everyone has different strategies. I finished in the top 10 last year with Owen Daniels as my best TE.
Yeah, and he had a tremendous year given what he cost.
Rad...changed out 1 of the QBs...got rid of Warner, still left me Eli, Schaub, and Cutler which I'm totally fine with and they cover for bye weeks alright too. I then slid Folk out nad replaced him with Rackers, took the remainder and grabbed Gaffney...now I have 6 WR, also have 3 TE with LJ, Watson, and Fassano...once in awhile they should creep into the flex perhaps. I still think the trio of Marshall, Smith, Cotchery will be pretty darn good once they are all assembled week 3, and now I have Ginn, Crayton and Gaffney behind that...maybe that will be a little better.

 TE's can be included as a flex Agree on WR/K's though

Warner is not fool proof and putting a rookie in there is also risky...could quickly find yourself with just Cutler...I'm playing devil's advecote...you have some nice WR with depth, TE...personal choice but I'm not high on Heap right now and Grant I also have questions about but you did a nice job assembling that team...you should be around for awhile.

QB - Jay Cutler - 14

QB - Jake Delhomme - 12

QB - Kurt Warner - 5

I'm not counting on Warner being a starter all year, but at $5 he was hard to pass on. I figured since he is a risk to play all year, I better take 3 QB's, all with different byes.

RB - Maurice Jones-Drew - 34

RB - Clinton Portis - 33

RB - Maurice Morris - 11

RB - Ricky Williams - 8

RB - Leon Washington - 7

RB - Ray Rice - 4

RB - Steve Slaton - 1

Two studs to go along with five hopefuls (most of which will be on many rosters). I went with quantity and quality here.

WR - Brandon Marshall - 23

WR - Jerricho Cotchery - 23

WR - Steve Smith - 23

WR - Derrick Mason - 12

WR - Reggie Williams - 8

WR - Steve Breaston - 1

I considered nabbing some single digit values, but those three $23 guys intrigued me. No team was eliminated in week 1 last year, so taking Marshall and Smith wasn't a concern. I almost took Kevin Walter at $6, but opted for Reggie Williams instead as a boom/bust pick. My top 5 WR's all have different byes, which made the decision of Williams over Walter for me.

TE - Tony Gonzalez - 23

TE - Dustin Keller - 2

I flip-flopped between this combo and Winslow/Fasano. In the end, Gonzo/Keller was $6 less, which allowed me to beef up elsewhere. Plus, I like Keller's potential more than Fasano.

PK - Kris Brown - 2

PK - Jason Hanson - 1

I wanted 2 cheap dome kickers, especially for the end of the season. I will have at least 1 kicker in a dome each week, except for weeks 3 and 4. Weather won't be a problem for Brown and Hanson.

TD - New York Jets - 2

TD - Miami Dolphins - 1

Considered either taking a third D or getting two stronger ones, but their schedules match up great. It will be tough in weeks 3 and 5, but here is what I will face from week 6 on: HOU or CIN, BAL or OAK, BUF or KC, DEN or BUF, SEA or STL, OAK or NE, NE or TEN, STL or DEN, and then in weeks 14 thru 16 - BUF or SF, BUF or SF again, and KC or SEA.

Bye weeks should not kill me. My top 6 studs (Maurice Jones-Drew, Clinton Portis, Brandon Marshall, Jerricho Cotchery, Steve Smith, and Tony Gonzalez) all have different byes. More amazing, none of my players are off after week 10! How lucky am I?

11 of our picks are identical. Basically AD/Brees/Porter v. Romo/Barber/Harrison.

They absolutely can...the more I look at this thing, I think 3 TE is the way to go, especially with all the value and decent guys you can get...they get 1.5 PPR...if Javon Walker ($12) posts what FBG is projecting which is 45/600/4...and for $12 you can get a TE maybe that could out produce him...or the stats are similar, isn't the TE worth slightly more? These things come down to sometimes a .1 of a point.

I like your team a lot, but it would have been better if you took one less RB and switched that to another Wr or K.

QB - Drew Brees - 23

QB - Kurt Warner - 5

QB - Matt Ryan - 4

Coin toss between Romo and Brees here, leaned Brees.

RB - Willis McGahee - 32

RB - Thomas Jones - 21

RB - DeAngelo Williams - 15

RB - Chris Johnson - 14

RB - Ray Rice - 4

RB - Steve Slaton - 1

Probably the position where I feel least comfortable. Fortunately no two of my top 4 RB's share the same bye, which helps.

WR - Marques Colston - 30

WR - Brandon Marshall - 23

WR - Jerricho Cotchery - 23

WR - Derrick Mason - 12

WR - Kevin Walter - 6

WR - Steve Smith - 5

This should get it done. No serious bye issues. Had a 7th WR selected, ultimately chose to go with 3 TE's

TE - Tony Gonzalez - 23

TE - Anthony Fasano - 3

TE - Dustin Keller - 2

Kept trying to find a way to rearrange the budget to pickup Witten, just couldn't swing it. Prefered 3 TE's in a 1.5 PPR, flex optional format.

PK - Mike Nugent - 1

PK - Jason Hanson - 1

TD - St. Louis Rams - 1

TD - Detroit Lions - 1

Did exactly what I wanted here. 2 $1 defenses/kickers with no byes after week 5.

QB - Jay Cutler - 14

QB - Kurt Warner - 5

QB - Matt Ryan - 4

Definitely a weaker position for me with a rookie and Warner, but for $23 it gave me some leeway at RB & WR.

RB - Clinton Portis - 33

RB - Thomas Jones - 21

RB - Chris Johnson - 14

RB - Felix Jones - 11

RB - Ray Rice - 4

I really like the value Portis & T.Jones came at versus some of the other top backs. My thinking with Chris Johnson & Felix Jones was that when they have a big week, it's going to be a "Big Week" ie. 70 yard TD run/rec etc. that will net them 15+ points on the one play alone. Rice was an easy value play.

WR - Marcus Colston -30

WR - Calvin Johnson - 25

WR - Brandon Marshall - 23

WR - Santana Moss -14

WR - Kevin Walter - 6

WR - Deshaun Jackson - 4

Really love my top three WR's and Santana usually scores in bunches. Walter is the steady guy for byes and if two others dump in the same week. D.Jackson is a flyer.

TE - Tony Gonzalez - 23

TE - B.Utecht - 5

My weakest position. Really wanted Witten or Winslow but at $23 Gonzo allowed me to improve elswhere, I just couldn't fit the two others in under the $250 cap. Utecht is well, Utecht.

PK - Mike Nugent - 1

PK - Jason Hanson - 1

PK - Matt Prator -1

Three kickers, yep, but for a total of $3. Kickers are so inconsistant from week to week that I felt having three would increase my chances of getting 10+ points a week from the position. The cost was minimal, the only draw back in my opinion is the loss of an additional roster spot. Could my three have been different, sure, but I think these three all have a chance of putting up decent numbers from week to week. Also allows me to not be concerned with Hanson's health to start the season.

TD - Jacksonville - 5

TD - Buffalo Bills - 3

TD - Tennessee - 3

I feel the same way about the defensive position as I do the kicker spot, but you need quality teams here more so than at kicker. I love all three of these at their price. Now, I'll admit I didn't do any research as to scheduling as I just remembered about this contest last night at 1 am. I probably could have come up with a combination of two affordable teams where one or the other had a favorable match up each week, but I'm happy with these three for $11 and I think they'll fare very well.

Really great contest and I'm sure most everyone loves their team, it'll be interesting to see how this pans out.

True byes will be a deciding point but it is a risk worth taking, I will ride alot on ricky williams and hope my sleeper WR perform around week 8-10. if I make it past Week 9 I am golden.

Steve Slaton is another RB I may ride in week 8 or 9 just a couple injuries from being a starter and the backs are old and injury prone!!!!

I think if Romo LT and Westbrook are on fire I could beat some teams posted with those three alone not to mention Smith Marshall and S. Moss (S. Moss is my olde but goodie that I think will put up 1100 and 9 TD)

I'm all for the talk here but please stop quoting 80 lines of nothing over and over. Thank you!

Thought about doing the Dome Kicker thing, and I'll might regret not selecting a D with more upside potential, but I like the trio of QB's and TE's, and the mix at WR. I wanted the majority of the Jax Rushing Offense, and there's 'board karma' surrounding TJones right now. DAW becomes a pretty big key for me, and I'm OK with that. Some cheap upside potential with guys like Ray Rice, DeSean Jackson, and Breaston.

Well, it's in. Time to kick back and...

This thing is a blast. Much Thanks to Joe, David and Co for 'setting up us the bomb'...

Good Luck to everyone participating!

The flipside of the coin is that there will be weeks when LT and Westbrook fail to distinguish your team from the rest of the pack. When that happens, you'll be in trouble because you won't have the playmakers at other positions to keep you afloat. I like the RB group you built, but your lack of quality depth at WR and TE will probably kill you.

I don't think people understand...Warner is not going to start all year...not even close.
Is this being broadcast by the same station that brought us....Leinart > YoungLeinart > RiversLeinart > Cutler... and as recently as a few weeks ago couldn't understand why people suggested Warner might cut into Leinarts playing time? For the record I can't stand Warner but it speaks volumes that the human-T.O.-machine can beat Leinart "the Future" when the job was all but handed to Leinart this summer. Again.

True but if you dont do something different you will be like everyother team and we all know those two backs are capable of 16 solid performances, it would be a stretch for them to both do it but the odd are better then relying on a bunch of mediocre RB and 3 elite WR who can all have 50 yrd no TD game the same week and your done!!! I will rely on LT and Westy over Owens and Moss all day!!!!
