Called about two weeks ago. Got offered $10 off for a year. That's it. Said I was going to talk to wife about canceling the whole deal and would call back at a later time.

Just called today - At prompt said 'Cancel'.

Got routed to 'Barb' a kooky woman of age 40.

After a few minutes of getting past the normal formalities of what I was calling about her computer started working really slow. So I started asking questions about her, where she worked, and how she liked it, and basically joking around and shooting the ####. She then just started dropping deals on me . . .

Free Superfan - $100

$10 off a month for a year - $120

$16.50 one time credit for the first month for the Superfan that I was billed but which I haven't even paid yet. $16.50

12 month free HD-Extra package $60

Free DVR service for a year. - $5.95 x 12 = $71.40

Total savings - $367.90

Makes it all worth while

I started last year's Sunday Ticket thread and thought it was finally time to make the call this year myself. The first guy offered me $5 off my bill for 6 months. I said "no thanks", hung up, and called again. The next lady offered me $10 off the Ticket for 6 months. I asked her if she could give me the HD service free for a year and she said she could do one or the other, but not both. So I went with the free HD service ($9.99 for 12 months).I got SF free last year and could not talk her into giving it to me free again this year. Couldn't even get a discount. Has anyone been able to do that? I'm going to wait a week and try again on the SF, but if I don't get some kind of deal I'm going to cancel it. It's ok, but it's sure not worth $99.

Called back and got another $10 off for 12 months. So right now I've got that plus free HD for 12 months... a grand total of $239.88. I'm pretty happy about that, but they STILL keep telling me they can't comp me the SF.

I just tried to get it for free, at first the CS rep protested saying it wasn't possible.

I then asked to speak with his supervisor, he put me on hold and spoke to them, then said OK he'll do it.

He couldn't figure out how to process the superfan as free, so he gave me 10 dollars off a month for 12 months - even better.

I called Directv tonight. They called my bluff and I cancelled the ticket and the superfan. They said they couldn't give it to me for free 2 years in a row, even though its been longer than that. I have never paid for it. They offered $60 credit but I said forget it you can stick it.I said you are double dipping....You are charging me for the NFL Ticket and for HD Channels already and that getting the SuperFan on top of it was double dipping. If you could give me just the SuperFan I would take it, but you can't so cancel them both. I am a snob and I won't watch any games on Digital when there are HD Games on for Free.I figured I would wait a few weeks and see if they call or send me an offer to get me back, but I may still pass on it. I realized that I can watch all the Eagles games in HD and the games of the week, in HD and the Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday night games for free in HD.

I just used the same angle about double-dipping on tyhe HD...####en BS...anyhow after 20 minutes on the phone all i could get from them was a $10 month for one year credit...guess that pays for my Sf and then some but not what I was expecting after reading all these great stories Maybe they looked at all my past history and freebies that they gave me

This is the deal I got last year to offset the ST charges. I ended up keeping the premium package for the entire year after the four months was up, and was paying about 136.00 per month. All movie channels, and a ton of Fox Sports channels. Was a nice bargaining chip in getting the ST and SF for $9.00 this year.

I just ordered new service tonight. They said I could downgrade to the 39.99 package after the 4 month period and add only the sports tier with all the Fox's and stuff for 12 dollars, so I'll go with that. Got a year of free Showtime, a second free DVR (hooking up 4 TV's), and a 20.00 credit for using autopay on my card. I tried for Superfan but got the Heisman.

I only get ST also, but I haven't been able to get the to give me NFLN. How did you swing that?Usually I call every year and ask for a long time subscriber deep discount and they end up giving me free movie channels for 3 months.

Here is my story. I called them just now after receiving the letter yesterday (269 + 99 cost). I said I wanted to verify my bill for the Ticket and Superfan. The woman told me I was renewed for both. I didn't tell here about the letter but used the email ploy. She said I was to be billed for 6 x 41 for the Ticket and that the SF was free. I'm not sure if that was how it was set up when I called or if she changed it when I mentioned the email with free SF. Anyhow I got her name and wrote down the pertanent data (name/date/time) in case of any problems. So suppossedly $249 total. Hope that helps....Edit to add: BTW, I'm a roughly 8 year DTV customer with about 5 years with the ticket and 2 years of SF, all at full price, so maybe that helped me....

Update to this.....got my bill today and lo and behold, I WAS charged for Superfan. I called immediately, explained the deal, and was (suppossedly) given the SF for free again, and a credit for my 1/6th auto withdrawl payment for it. I again noted all the contact info. So, when you talk to someone do this to cover yourself:Anyhow I got her name and wrote down the pertanent data (name/date/time) in case of any problems.

This is to give hope to everyone in the Shark Pool about ST deals (I am a long time lurker, rare poster, but this story just has to be told).I am a 10+ year DirecTV customer with ST all years. I actually cancelled ST earlier this year (price too high, soccer games with the kids on Sunday, etc.), and called back today to "see what we could do", said I might switch providers (not on a contract anymore), etc. I don't have HD, but we have 3 SD DVRs, they work great, we are addicted to DVR service, and I don't trust the DirecTV HD DVRs.Long story short, after 4 calls this morning, I hit the jackpot (I went through customer retention each time). I am now getting the Premier Package (all channels) + ST + SF for $74.99 / month for the next 4 months. After that, I can switch back to our regular package. This is the best part - NO NEW CONTRACT (since I didn't get any new equipment)! I am very excited, since I will be getting all of the sports channels, movies, etc. + ST + SF for only $20 more per month for 4 months ($80 total) than I was already paying (plus NO NEW CONTRACT!). I have received a fair amount of credits from them in the past, discounts, etc., and after reading this thread, I was not very hopeful for this year. But alas, it is time for football again!Plus, with no new commitment, I'll have to call them back again next year!Good luck to everyone else.

Just called them and they offered $10 credit for 6 months and free SuperFan. I was very up-front with them and told them I was on a football forum and there were numerous examples of long-time subscribers getting good deals. I quoted from my good friend "bridaniel" and told them I wanted free Premier for 4 months, free SuperFan, and I'd pay 75 for 4 months for the ticket. I already have the premier package so the way I see it, I just saved $30 per month from what I was paying and got ST and SF free. So $120 + $350 = $470 in savings.

I want to call in and get Super Fan thrown in for free but if they are giving me Sunday Ticket for free then I don't want to make any waves. Is this how they distribute the early bird discount of $40 or whatever?

I think they are spreading the 2 purchases out. last month I had a payment for sunday ticket and none for superfan. This month SuperFan charged, but no sunday ticket fee.I think they are trying to make your individual bill not so high, so you don't call to complain.

All those deals are great, HD reciever, DVR... but do you have to sign a committment? For some it's not a big deal, but for me I only want DTV for the 4 months during the NFL season. I have typical cable, phone and internet combined into $99 per year so I don't want an additional cost of DTV for the life of the committment after the NFL regular season.

With that said, I called DTV and I got the same deal as others without a committment because I had my own equipment. I got a deal of the sunday ticket, all the DTV channels (HD excluded) because I don't have a HD reciver. The superfan and $10 off a month to boot. It was like $260 over 4 months.

Two Words, gentlemen: Service Interruption

Ok I called today and said I was thinking about switching from Direct TV to another service that was cheaper. (for me it was AT&T triple play. TV, Phone and Internet. They have a good deal right now if you are in their area. And to be fair I was seriously considering it.) The customer service guy I talked to at DTV switched me over to someone else (customer retention?) when explained I was thinking about switching. I was very polite and said I was going over my finances and while I love DTV with the Ticket I was thinking about making the switch and saving about 40-50 dollars a month. She was very friendly and looked up the deal with AT&T and then offered me some options because they wanted to keep me as a customer and I wanted to stay. I have been a customer for 3 years for whatever it is worth. We settled on a $10 per month discount for 12 months (she started with 6 months but moved it to 12 when I politely asked if she could do anything more there but she would not raise it from $10), free HBO for 3 months and free Showtime for 6 months. She could not do anything about my Sunday Ticket or Superfan because it was not on my bill yet but she suggested that I call back later when it did. She said she could not adjust a 0 bill. She also seemed like she would have been open to upgrading my equipment (place the joke of your choice here.) but I was happy with my Tivo and receivers and I think it probably would have meant a new contract but am not sure. I want to wait until I check later on my Ticket and Superfan before I sign on to a contract. Hope this helps.

So I called back today and said "Cancel" to the voice recording and it took me to a very nice CSR. I explained that I had called a month ago because I was paying alot more for DTV than I would for Cable or AT&T and had reached an agreement for the discounts above as well as getting Super Fan for free once it hit my bill since the Sunday Ticket is why I am with DTV in the first place. He said fine and put me on hold for a couple of minutes while he applied a $99 credit to my account. Simple, easy and much appreciated.

I am seriously thinking of doing DirectTV as my wife and I are huge football/fantasy fans. Currently, we basically just get the local cable service with some hi-def channels and the basic 60 channels. We also get our cable internet through them, as well.

I know the Sunday Ticket and SF are probably amazing, but what about when I want to watch "I love New York" or "Bret Michaels Boinks on the Rock Bus" or anything for that matter?

I'm scared I'm not overly excited by change and changing how I watch TV is YUGE (why do people say Yuge and not Huge - It's not a freakin 'Y'). Anyway....much of the time we watch TV via TIVO and TIVO is pretty darn sweet. Its not just a DVR, it is software that I'm not sure can be duplicated.

The other issue is the subscription agreement for 18 months of whatever the contract is. Am I going to regret doing this?

I don't have much time before that first kick, so convince me this really is a no-brainer

The lady said hold on and she would give me the HD DVR for free. I haven't moved yet, but did I get enough or can I still get more.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's a no brainer, but the Ticket is pretty amazing. I can tell you some of the negatives about DTV.1. You can't split the cables. You need to have a line running directly from the dish to every reciever connection. If you want to watch/ record two things at a time you need 2 lines for each DVR. I have 2 DVRs and a regular receiver, so I require 5 lines coming from the dish.2. You need to have a phone line connected to your DVR. DTV is the only reason I have a land line.3. Weather. I believe you need the phone line connected to get software updates for the DVR. I ran my old TIVO for sometime without one and eventually lost service because it wasn't running the correct software version. I guess the DTV DVR could be different.

So I just called and told them that I had gotten an email saying that I was to get Superfan for free. After being put on hold for a while she told me that she was not able to give me Superfan for free but that she could take $10 off of my bill for 12 months and another $5 off of my bill for 6 months. both as far as I know - I got it for 1/2 price the first year - the second year I got it for free - this year they refused to comp it but gave me 10 a month for a year off my bill so it was like getting it for free. I am a 4 year customer, premier package, HD package, ST/SF, pay by credit card so I am never late. HD DVR so......I didn't get a huge discount but $120.00 is nothing to sneeze at and I love the Red Zone Channel on SuperFan - sometimes I can just watch that for a couple hours and get a bit of all the games!

1. I have a line running out of the dvr to the garage and it works fine, obviously you have to watch whats on the tv downstairs out in the garage.2. I have never had a phone line hooked up, I have two dvrs going3. agreed, but it doesnt happen often to me anyways4. did you even try and line it up? the only real reason they want a phone line is so they can bill you immediately for ppv and so they know exactly where the box is. I get updates and have no phone line hooked up.

I moved and they said they would give me "Ticket" AND SuperFan FREE but when they came out to install my dish they said that where I lived they could not set up the dish because I had no southern facing view.

I called back to the DTV Customer Service and suddenly this was my fault that I didn't check with them before I moved to be sure they would be able to install it. They then said I would need to pay a early termination fee!?!

I told them "what's going on with that, I want DTV you just cannot provide it for me this isn't my fault how can you charge me a ETF? Their statement was that "we didn't say you had to move" and that " You should have not moved before your contract was up"?!?

I was irate I asked to talk to a supervisor or someone who would listen to reason, and after 45 minutes of arguing with the CS person they finally said they would not charge me the ETF, just send back the Equipment. I said I would when I saw the ETF come off my billing invoice, and that took another 3 days.....

Long and short of it is that because of the place I live I have to have Time Warner's no Big Ten/NFL network and no NFC games in HD. I get this great coverage(yeah right!!) to enjoy on my 61" DLP.

PLEASE DTV come back to me.....I'll treat you good this time....we can work this out....

Well, it costs more $$ than cable, but if you want the best possible football watching experience, then it is worth it, IMO.IF you do it, you should contact someone is this thread (or a friend with directv) and say they referred you and you'll each get a $50 credit.I think Directv has the Sunday Ticket locked up for several more years, so if you like it, the 2 year contract should be no big deal.I can't speak to how the DVR service/interface works, as I think it is different with each receiver. (Mine is an older TIVO model, and I like it).Oh yeah, and the Red Zone channel streaming on the laptop while watching the game of your choice on the big screen = .Now go and make that call already!

They have a new dish/technology that allows 1 coax cable to a HD DVR (which which will allow you to record 2 shows while watching 1 recorded). Catch is they will only offer this dish for new subscribers that require at least 5 tuners - 1 of which must be HD (ie: 2 HD-DVR's and 1 standard). This just launched nation wide a few days ago. Dish is called SQMLine5.

You do need a phone line for the Tivo updates. But not with the new DTV DVR, I think it is the HR 20. besides the new DTV DVR is 100 time better than the tivo

Yeah, the HR20 is better if you like not being able to swap tuners and watch two games at once.. It's also better if you like to have 3-4 blank recordings a week. It's great not being able to rely on your DVR. Man, I wish Tivo had a MPEG4 DVR. The HR20 has a LONG way to go before it can be seen as a viable replacement for a Tivo. If not for the mpeg4 HD content, I'd throw the HR20 in the trash where it belongs.
