Re-upped Pena the other day. Got rid of cancers Delmon and Dukes. Gave Kazmir a little bit of dough, and now are about to sign their ace to a long-term extension.

Not that there's much competition, but this is definitely the best time to be a Rays fan. Bright days ahead.

Good move here. I think in '09, the Rays will make a run at the A.L. wild card. They have a nice young team. Hopefully, they can keep them together.

Pretty much everybody is locked up for a while now. They made it clear they want to sign their good, young pieces to extensions (Shields, Pena this year; Crawford, Rocco a few years back) -- no reason to think they're going the way of the A's or the Marlins here.

What do people think the Rays' plans are for:

Rocco Baldelli - I assume that when healthy, he'll be either leading off or batting somewhere in the top 3 spots in the order. I read that he's working out 3 times per week with no setbacks this offseason, but do the Rays trust him? Is he still part of their plans?

Jeff Niemann - Had a mediocre year in AAA but managed to stay healthy and I think I read he had a great postseason. He's gotten to that age that he's gotta get his chance, maybe to start this year? Is he still viewed as a potential starter or is he more likely to be in the pen or traded? Or back at AAA?

Rocco - OF/DH rotation with Floyd for now until the Mangina can show he can stay healthyNiemann - he's going to go to the back end of the rotation and probably the pen long term. This is his last year of options so it is make or break for him. After this season, he'll have to be passed through waivers to get back to the minors.

The deal is done

source

7 yrs, 38 million IF the team exercises all 3 controlled options over the last 3 years. The only part that is guaranteed right now are the 1st 4 years at 12 million.

Why would Shields sign that contract? He's arb eligible in 2 more years right?

Security. What if he blows his arm out?
Yeah I guess....but he's basically getting 5-7 million in insurance for all the upside in years 5,6,7...ie this contract is paying him 8 mil a year in those years when an avearge SP is getting 12 mil now....seems he could have bought insurance from Llyod's for cheaper than that.

This is a great re-upping for the Rays. It is a shame that they play in the AL East or they could make a push to the playoffs.
