2010 NFL MOCK DRAFT - 2 Rds (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
Here goes my only edition of the 2010 mock. Pretty busy this year as I normally put together 3 or 4 revs for the past 15 years or so. I've gathered quite a bit of information from various sources, but in the end these are my projections of what I believe the teams should do with their selections based on team needs and value of the draft board. Have at it as feedback is welcomed.

2010 NFL Mock Draft – Final Edition

1st ROUND

1. St. Louis Rams Sam Bradford QB 6’4” 235 Oklahoma

The Rams have to make this selection. Bradford should immediately become the starter as well as provide leadership, and lastly, he brings a well-rounded QB skill-set to a franchise in need of an identity (i.e., a franchise player).

.

2. Detroit Lions Ndamukong Suh DT 6’4” 315 Nebraska

This is a no-brainer decision for the Lions, IMO. Suh is the highest rated player in this entire draft and the value here should be obtained. Any of the OTs here would be a reach over either of the DTs who are both rated well above them. Suh is an imposing physical specimen with the athleticism to become a dominant force in the NFL on the interior. HC Jim Schwartz gets his kind of guy to develop in the mold of an Albert Haynesworth type of impact player.

3. Tampa Bay Bucs Gerald McCoy DT 6’4” 305 Oklahoma

The Bucs get an ideal fit for their defense with a penetrating 3-technique DT. McCoy brings elite quickness and overall athleticism to the position and could become a perennial Pro Bowl player. Immediate impact at a position of need, things couldn’t have played out better for the Bucs. These first 3 selections are absolute locks! .

4. Washington Redskins Trent Williams OT 6’4 ½” 315 Oklahoma

Same position as most every other mock, just a different player selected. Williams and Okung are pretty much rated equal, but Williams is a better fit for the Shanahan zone-blocking philosophy as he has a little bit better agility than Okung. Williams is also a guy who plays with a bit of a nastry streak which would endear him to his coaches and teammates. Although, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Okung selected here or even a trade down a few slots for an additional pick or two since the ‘Skins gave up plenty to get McNabb.

5. Kansas City Chiefs Russell Okung OT 6’4 ½” 315 Oklahoma St.

The Chiefs o-line is still subpar, and adding a player like Okung (or T.Williams) would go a long way in solidifying this group for years to come. This selection would give the Chiefs the flexibility to move Brandon Albert either inside to guard or to the right tackle spot. However, a player like S Eric Berry or a trade down for Berry or S Earl Thomas could also be strongly considered here.

6. Seattle Seahawks Derrick Morgan DE 6’3” 265 Georgia Tech

Here is where the draft gets interesting, as the Seahawks have multiple options, and needs to fill, and the board still has elite prospects at several positions. At the end of the day, the need to provide heat on opposing QBs should win out here as the Hawks bring Morgan aboard to step right in for the retiring Kerney. Morgan is explosive off the snap of the ball and has the potential to provide double-digit sacks for years to come.

7. Cleveland Browns Eric Berry S 5’11 ½” 212 Tennessee

Berry not only fills a need for the Browns here, but also gives them a player to counter their division rivals’ backend difference-makers (Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed). Berry can be that same type of playmaking safety and instantly becomes the leader of this defense. The Dawg Pound will love this guy.

8. Oakland Raiders C.J. Spiller RB 5’10 ½” 196 Clemson

Huh???....Yeah, I know that’s what most people will be saying once they see this selection here. But if the Raiders can’t make a move up for Williams or Okung, I don’t see them addressing their most glaring need (OT) here in the first round and they will look to make a big splash here. A guy like Spiller will add instant electricity to the team in the return game as well as from scrimmage in playing together with either McFadden or Bush. McFadden or Spiller both can be flanked out wide or into the slot to keep multiple big-play threats on the field at once. Don’t discount this pick happening if the board shakes out as I’ve listed here. Even if not, remember that Al Davis is daring, if nothing else.

9. Buffalo Bills Bryan Bulaga OT 6’5” 315 Iowa

The Bills love drafting Big Ten players, and the trend continues with the selection of OL Bulaga. Personally, I’m not a big fan of his, but the Bills are desperate for big guys up front to fortify their o-line, and Bulaga is thought of as a safe, high-effort guy who should at least be solid if not special. QB Clausen has to be strongly considered here as well.

10. Jacksonville Jaguars Kyle Wilson CB 5’10” 195 Boise St.

In a division where you have to contend with the lethal aerial attacks of Indy and Houston, you can never have enough cover guys. Wilson has skyrocketed up draft boards with a superb postseason culminating in this Top 10 selection. Clausen and Dez Bryant will receive consideration here as well.

11. Denver Broncos Rolando McClain LB 6’4” 252 Alabama

In an effort to get stronger up the middle, the Broncos tab McClain to captain their defense as a David Harris-style inside linebacker. Physical enough to take on blockers and blitz the QB, yet athletic enough to drop back into a shallow zone will allow McClain to stay on the field in most situations.

12. Miami Dolphins Dan Williams NT 6’2” 325 Tennessee

Parcells likes drafting big guys early and often. Williams has entrenched himself as a Top 20 selection and there is a need along the front seven for a big, young, space eater and Williams fits the bill. Pass-rushing specialists Kindle or Hughes could also get consideration here.

13. San Francisco 49ers Jerry Hughes OLB 6’1 ¾” 255 TCU

I’m not buying into the rumors of a Clausen selection here. There had to be an internal rift surrounding something, and I’m suspecting it had more to do with the FA acquisitions (Nate Clements, Jonas Jennings, Dre Bly) that cost a lot of $$$ yet didn’t pan out more than anything to do with Alex Smith. An edge rusher or DB here probably carries more value than the OL available at this spot. Hughes is another fast riser who some 3-4 team may very well fall in love with. Although, Dez Bryant could also be a darkhorse selection here.

14. Seattle Seahawks Anthony Davis OT 6’5” 320 Rutgers

The Seahawks absolutely have to come out of this draft with a starting LT to replace the venerable Walter Jones, a future HOFer. Davis has natural ability to be a fantastic LT but will need to be motivated to keep his conditioning and concentration level up on a consistent basis. If the kid matures and realizes his potential, he has All-Pro capability.

15. New York Giants Lamarr Houston DT 6’2” 305 Texas

Another under-the-radar guy who could end up in the first round due to team philosophy. The Giants love to rotate their front seven, and a penetrating 3-technique like Houston could fit right into their rotation and make an immediate impact even with approximately 35-40 snaps per game in his rookie season.

16. Tennessee Titans Joe Haden CB 5’11” 192 Florida

The Titans have needs on their d-line and d-backfield. A guy like Haden, initially projected as a Top 10 pick, brings solid value here and should immediately step in as a starter. Combined with Finnegan, the Titans will have a very physical CB tandem capable of matching up with the better WR corps in the league.

17. San Francisco 49ers Patrick Robinson CB 5’11” 190 Florida St.

Robinson is a very smooth athlete ideally suited for the type of press (man) coverage that NFL teams use. After watching the likes of Clements struggle with pass-interference and illegal contact penalties due to his lack of fluidity when left out on the ‘island’, they could certainly choose a guy like Robinson even over Haden if available.

18. Pittsburgh Steelers Maurkice Pouncey C/G 6’4” 305 Florida

This is definitely a guy who fills a huge need, and with the added versatility to swing between center and guard, Pouncey is a no-brainer selection here for the Steelers. A strong character guy and team leader with the smarts to make all the line calls, Pouncey has the ability to become a fixture at the Pro Bowl, and dare I say, even HOF potential. Think Dwight Stephenson.

19. Atlanta Falcons Everson Griffen DE 6’3” 265 USC

The Falcons have to look to matchup with the Saints if they want to compete for the division title, and in doing so, they will need to get after Drew Brees. Griffen had a phenomenal Pro Day workout where he was clocked (by some) right around or sub- 4.5 in the forty. He also excels in using his hands to get around blockers and with HC Smith being a defensive-oriented guy, he is the type of motivator that could get the most out of a guy like Griffen who probably should have put up better numbers in college. But there is plenty of upside here.

20. Houston Texans Earl Thomas DB 5’10” 205 Texas

The Texans add a guy who has the ability to play anywhere in the secondary and may switch to corner sooner rather than later. A very athletic player with fluid hips who transitions smoothly in and out of his breaks, Thomas is too good of value to pass on here even if he stays at the safety position as he could become an Ed Reed type of player there as well. This kid is always around the ball, a future Pro Bowler.

21. Cincinnati Bengals Jermaine Gresham TE 6’5” 255 Oklahoma

Some teams never do what most think they should, and this selection appears too obvious for the Bengals. They’ve never had a reliable TE that I can recall and Gresham would provide Carson Palmer with a big, reliable target in the middle of the field and give this offense the needed boost that it clearly lacked down the stretch last season. Gresham has Pro Bowl potential and should contribute immediately.

22. New England Patriots Dez Bryant WR 6’2” 222 Oklahoma St.

Leave it to Belichick to pull the trigger on a player like Dez, a Top 10 talent but with many question marks. In a no-nonsense environment such as N.E., Bryant will have to show-and-prove right away that he is willing to put in the work and become a true professional in every sense of the word. The question is: Will Moss be there more than one year for Bryant to gain some insights from? Either way, the fantasy world will be jumping for joy.

23. Green Bay Packers Bruce Campbell OT 6’5” 310 Maryland

The Pack gave up way too many sacks last season and are in a position to take a chance on a premier physical talent like Campbell. Blessed with elite athleticism for the position, Campbell is lacking in the technique dept., however. If he can pick things up and start ascending towards what his vast potential and measurables suggest, the Pack will have a helluva player in tow. That’s a big IF.

24. Philadelphia Eagles Carlos Dunlap DE 6’6” 280 Florida

The Eagles under Andy Reid love drafting linemen, and this year will be no different. Dunlap is a rare physical specimen with loads of potential. An inconsistent motor has been his most glaring concern, but if the light comes on for this kid, WATCH OUT! A guy like Iupati could also be given consideration here.

25. Baltimore Ravens Kareem Jackson CB 5’10” 195 Alabama

The Ravens have to upgrade their secondary, especially on the corners. Jackson is a solid technician and comes from a winning program. Experienced, tough, and with enough athleticism to stay with NFL WRs, Jackson could start from Day 1.

26. Arizona Cardinals Sean Weatherspoon LB 6’1” 240 Missouri

Out the door goes Dansby, in comes his clone (Weatherspoon). The Cardinal fans will love this guy, who has nonstop motor (and mouthpiece), and is a very bright kid who will become one of the leaders on this team. Great sideline-to-sideline range who will be a perfect fit as an ILB in their system. A no-brainer selection if he is available here.

27. Dallas Cowboys Vladimir Ducasse OT 6’4 ½” 330 UMass

Ducasse fits the mold of the prototypical Dallas o-lineman, extremely large, physical, and nasty. May not start right away, but with proper coaching, Ducasse will be groomed as the eventual long-term replacement for Flozell Adams, who could be brought back at a discount later this offseason.

28. San Diego Chargers Ryan Mathews RB 6’0” 217 Fresno St.

GM A.J. Smith is shrewd enough to see the value of the board here and will select a top-rated RB here over a NT. Mathews provides an every-down skill-set that the Bolts need in the long-term and should be highly productive in Norv Turner’s system.

29. New York Jets Sergio Kindle OLB 6’3” 250 Texas

The tremendous offseason continues for the Jets as they land a Top 20 prospect here. Kindle should excel in Rex Ryan’s aggressive scheme and may eventually allow the Jets to severe ties with underachieving Vernon Gholston.

30. Minnesota Vikings Mike Iupati G 6’5” 330 Idaho

The Vikings add muscle and attitude to their interior o-line with Iupati. Iupati is a player who may also be able to fill-in as a RT in a pinch so there is added versatility with this selection. Adrian Peterson will be smiling.

31. Indianapolis Colts Charles Brown OT 6’5” 305 USC

In need of a blind-side protector for Peyton Manning, Brown is the type of finesse player that the Colts look for to play in their scheme. Could come in and start at some point during his rookie campaign after playing in a pro-style offense at USC.

32. New Orleans Saints Jason Pierre-Paul DE 6’5” 270 S.Florida

The Saints close out the first day of the draft with an upside pick. JPP will need plenty of seasoning before he is ready to make an impact, but the physical gifts are there in abundance and the Saints may look to cut ties with both of their '09 starting DEs Grant and Allen in the near future.

2nd ROUND

33. St. Louis Rams Arrelious Benn WR 6’1” 220 Illinois

34. Detroit Lions Jahvid Best RB 5’10½”200 California

35. Tampa Bay Bucs Demaryius Thomas WR 6’3” 225 Georgia Tech

36. Kansas City Chiefs Taylor Mays S 6’3” 230 USC

37. Philadelphia Eagles Devin McCourty CB 5’11” 192 Rutgers

38. Cleveland Browns Jimmy Clausen QB 6’2 ½”220 Notre Dame

39. Oakland Raiders Rodger Saffold OT 6’5” 315 Indiana

40. San Diego Chargers Terrence Cody G 6’3 ½”355 Alabama

41. Buffalo Bills Tim Tebow QB 6’3” 235 Florida

42. Tampa Bay Bucs Brandon Graham DE 6’1 ½”265 Michigan

43. Denver Broncos Linval Joseph DL 6’4 ½”330 E.Carolina

44. New England Patriots Jared Odrick DL 6’4” 275 Penn St.

45. Denver Broncos Golden Tate WR 5’10” 200 Notre Dame

46. New York Giants Rob Gronkowski TE 6’6” 250 Arizona

47. New England Patriots Ricky Sapp DE/OLB 6’2” 255 Clemson

48. Carolina Panthers Alex Carrington DL 6’5” 285 Arkansas St.

49. San Francisco 49’ers Jared Veldheer OT 6’8” 315 Hillsdale

50. Kansas City Chiefs Dexter McCluster WR 5’8” 170 Mississippi

51. Houston Texans Perrish Cox CB 5’11” 195 Oklahoma St.

52. Pittsburgh Steelers Amari Spievey CB 5’11” 195 Iowa

53. New England Patriots Joe McKnight RB 5’11” 200 USC

54. Cincinnati Bengals Tyson Alualu DL 6’2 ½”295 California

55. Philadelphia Eagles Jon Asamoah G 6’4” 305 Illinois

56. Green Bay Packers Koa Misi OLB 6’2 ½”250 Utah

57. Baltimore Ravens Brian Price DT 6’1” 305 UCLA

58. Arizona Cardinals Jerome Murphy CB 6’0” 195 S.Florida

59. Dallas Cowboys Nate Allen S 6’0” 205 S.Florida

60. Seattle Seahawks Damian Williams WR 6’0 ½”198 USC

61. New York Jets Cam Thomas NT 6’4” 330 N.Carolina

62. Minnesota Vikings Brandon Ghee CB 5’11 ½”195 Wake Forest

63. Indianapolis Colts Corey Wootton DL 6’6” 270 Northwestern

64. New Orleans Saints Toby Gerhardt RB 6’0” 230 Stanford

Note: There will probably be a few trades, of course, but I did not project trades here. Clausen will most likely go somewhere in the first round, but I believe it will be via a trade scenario.

One of the best Mock's I have seen lately. Not sure how much sense McCluster makes in KC with Charles there though.
I think they can use this guy as a slot WR in Weiss' system, some Wildcat pkgs, and as a KR guy, relieving Charles of that duty. Just bringing another playmaker on board is what I was thinking.

Good stuff. Entertaining.

Dallas does have its eye on Ducasse. He's come in for a visit, which is always a sign of interest. I suspect that they'd go Iupati were he still on the board. But you never know.

Safety in round 2 is a solid call. Nate Allen works well. Don't be surprised if Burnett from Georgia Tech is their pick there either.

Ahh, only 3 more days til the real thing.

There is no way Graham will fall that far.
First thought I had when reading the mock as well. It's possible, but highly unlikely given the amount of 3-4 teams in need of an OLB. Overall a very good mock though.
I wouldn't go quite as far as to say no way it happens, as lots of unexpected things can and do occur on draft day. Most mocks I've seen have Graham going to ATL, I simply placed a similar player/position (E.Griffen) in there instead. My thoughts are that after the Top 12-15 players, the next 30-35 players are all rated pretty evenly. I don't know if Graham projects well to a 3-4 even though his size would indicate it, as from what I've gathered he's more of the Freeney type, but without the electric quickness of a Freeney. If the Freeney comp is somewhat true, then he's strictly a 4-3 DE. Either way, I think there are a ton of scenarios that can occur based on the depth of this draft, and the similar value players that will be bunched up for long stretches during this draft. Round 3 value will be off the charts in comparison to previous years.

I don't see SF not drafting Haden if he is there. Also, they will take an OT with one of those 2 selections, unless they address that issue via trade beforehand or all of the OT they covet are totally gone.

Bold. And overall I like it.

But I cannot see any way that Clausen, Graham, and Odrick all fall out of the first.

I like that you have Mays doing so, though.

And I'd love for the Vikes to get Iupati. My hope is for either him or Pouncey.

Nice job, but regarding the Saints, Grant has already been released and they just signed Alex Brown to replace him. Will Smith is the other starter and isn't going anywhere any time soon.

Ducasse is waaay too early. Not a bad player, in fact I don't mind him. However, I do not like passing up first round talent for him though. Also, I much prefer Burnett over Allen.

Overall, nice job. As a 49er fan I would be very depressed if they botched the draft this bad, I can't see Singletary screwing the pooch this bad.

I can understand how everyone wants their team to make a big 'splash', but sometimes teams have to draft soundly and I don't think there'd be anything wrong with the Niners coming out of this draft with a pass rushing OLB and CB. As far as Haden goes, I was already of the belief that he is somewhat overrated and there is talk now being leaked from league inner circles of the same feeling. A guy like Robinson, who I have slotted for the Niners, has a better physical skill-set (smoother hips, better closing speed, etc.) than Haden and could turn out to be a better pro. At this level, coaching should be able to maximize guys' talents, so I'd often go with the player with the better overall physical tools when it's pretty close. In this regard, I have Wilson and Robinson as having better physical tools than Haden.

As a Packer fan I would vomit if their draft looked like this after 2 rounds. I don't want anything to do with Campbell.

Yeah, I was aware that they released Grant and I am merely speculating that they may release Smith in the next few years as well, due to his contract. If he re-signed already, and IIRC he did, he will be due big $$$$ in a couple of years as most NFL contracts are backloaded. By drafting JPP here, they have a guy with explosive pass rush potential who'd be ready to fill a starting role at that time, if not sooner. If he's there, they will have to take him as the upside risk/reward for him is great at that point in the draft. Even if they don't release Smith, top-flight pass rushers are needed (and coveted) by everyone. Nice feedback from the homers though, appreciate it.

Intruiging Raiders' pick in the first round for sure. Nice job.
I agree, but I think if Al is really being bold he'll take Clausen rather than create a three headed monster at RB.
I've had a funny feeling for a couple months now that Al might do this. Anyone who follows the Raiders knows how bad the kick return game has been the past couple years. And I really don't think the Raiders will mind having a three headed monster at RB, they've been doing it for years. For some reason they just won't give the job to Bush full time, something just doesn't seem right to me with that whole situation. And if they do go this route Saffold in the 2nd is not a bad consolation prize.

Great work!

Our top 7 are exactly the same, we only start to differ at Oakland where I have the Raiders going for Clausen and then start to project trades - both JAX and MIA moving down. I could see Davis pulling this out of his hat.

Yeah, I saw your mock earlier right before I posted mine. We (Rayyy-duhhs) think alike..... ;) I think there will definitely be some trades, and I like your trade projections, it's just so hard to know who will do the wheeling and dealing at this point. If Al pulls the trigger on Spiller, several teams will be thrown for a loop. And the value of guys like Best and McKnight will go up, Best could sneak into the latter end of the first via a trade up from DET, SEA, or get tabbed by N.E. or Green Bay.......Good work also my man!

As a Packer fan I would vomit if their draft looked like this after 2 rounds. I don't want anything to do with Campbell.
Our local beat writer's draft analysis is exclusively factual data and quotes from scouts and personell guys. This is what he has on Campbell:
Went to the combine as a fourth-year junior with 17 starts and left it almost a folk hero with a blazing 40, a 32-inch vertical jump, 34 reps on the bench press, long arms (36¼) and big hands (10½). "I don't give a damn about the workout," one scout said. "On the tape he's an outstanding pass protector who really will never stick his head in in the running game. When the going gets tough, I don't know how physically tough he is." His father, Bruce, was an excellent player at Providence and was drafted by the New Jersey Nets in 1978. "All he can do is run 40 yards," another scout said. "We'll run around him; he'll be like a revolving door. He's just a straight-line stiff guy. I'd make him a defensive end." His athleticism makes him tailor-made for Al Davis and the Raiders, according to several scouts. "If somebody keeps him up there they're keeping an athlete, and that's dangerous," San Diego GM A.J. Smith said. "The lights could come on because he has all kinds of ability. It's feast or famine."

Yep! This is probably how most teams feel. But in the end, somebody will take a chance on this kid. Who will it be???? Just like most fans out there, we all hope it isn't our team. The Pack could just as well take Brown of USC or another OT.....they certainly need one.

Love the Texans picks but I can't ignore the consensus that they draft a RB in the first 2 rounds. They wanted Shonne Green last year only to see the Jets trade up and snag him at the top of the 3rd. I'm not sure they are going to be willing to wait on a guy to fall to them this year in the later rounds with Slaton's injuries/fumblitis.
