2011 Broncos Training Camp Observations (1 Viewer)

Brandon Lloyd is a stud, one handed end zone grab put on a show for the fans - circus catches, normal catches, he does it all
This seems like a theme in ALL of Cecil's reports. How much of a steal is this guy in round 5 at WR18?The one-year wonder, John Fox factor is really depressing his value I guess? Obviously Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad managed some monster seasons under Fox, so it can be done.

At the end of this year, I am going to owe Cecil a big thank you or a big #### you. Based on this thread alone, I traded Knowshon and traded for Lloyd. I am a big believer in "System" drafting, which is why I was excited about Moreno in a John Fox system, but he has to get the carries and Cecil has made me question that.As far as Lloyd, I agree with you that too little is being made about the WR#1 in a John Fox system. I saw Steve Smith and Mushy both finish in the top #3 two years in a row. And until last year when they had McNown-like quarterbacking, they have always done well at WR#1.

So who is the TE to own from Denver for re-draft purposes, Orange Julius? What can we expect from him this season? Is he a potential TE1, TE2 or undraftable?
reading a 3+ page thread out of the question here?
Lots of hype in that thread, but no answer to my question. Is Julius Thomas a starter for the Broncos this season, and what kind of projections are expected??
not to beat a dead horse but read the thread. the conspicuous lack of chatter about one player will tell the story about likely starter at TE. draft accordingly.

If I recall correctly what I've heard Cec say - he can correct me if I'm off - but I think he said that initially, Orange Julius might not have a huge impact, that it might take him a while to crack the lineup and be productive. So if I read him right, Cec was saying he is worth a dynasty look but this year, probably not a redraft spot, until late if he comes on like Graham did w the saints last year.

Drafters never want to be the guy paying for last year's numbers. Especially on a player that has never done it before. Factor that in with the coaching change, looming QB controversy, and we're suddenly looking at an extremely undervalued player. 77/1,448/11 is nothing to scoff at, and after reading this thread it looks like $$Lloyd is in line for another nice year. Thanks Cecil.

Andrew - It also doesn't look like he got a single "vote" from the 3 Dynasty guys here @ FBG's & isn't even in the top 40 therefore @ TE (& those were all dated 08/08 or later)....Just trying to add a little perspective for those outside this thread sometimes.

Love Cecil, but if you only read his reports you'd think Jeremiah Johnson is a pro bowl caliber player.

I do too, but I also noticed 3 ranking guys here (including Andrew who I respect also) didn't even vote for him in their ROOKIE rankings at all and the other 4 had in the 3rd Round of a somewhat so/so class....

Thomas has been the talk of camp from an offensive perspective as far as the Denver radio and print go. I think Fells will be the immediate inline starter due to his blocking prowess and really he probably has the best overall game of the TEs (taking inline blocking into heavy consideration given Fox's proclivity for running the ball). But Thomas' receiving skills have been lauded by quite a few local observers. Apparently he has been lining up regularly in 2 TE sets and has occasionally split out in the slot. He lined up with the starters for a few plays last Thursday as well. I am not sure how much immediate fantasy production he will have, but I do think he will be a player in dynasty leagues based on the many rave reviews he has received.Edit to add: When I say Fells is the best overall TE, I mean right now. Once Thomas gets his blocking technique down (and reports are he is a willing blocker/effort guy), I do think he will take over as the guy at TE. I think that happens sometime later this season or at the beginning of next barring injury.

Thanks for the props.I was just relaying what I recall Cecil saying this weekend. I like what I've heard but I haven't seen a ton to change how I felt about him initially which is he's got potential but I'm not sold. I feel like I need to see more of him myself to really commit heavy enthusiasm to him. I thought real hard about putting him into my rookie rankings this week and if I keep reading good camp news and depending what I see when I watch what I can in preseason, he has a good chance to end up on my rankings.

But yeah its a meh TE class so I'm hesitant. as mentioned above, blocking seems to be his biggest hurdle and it's hamstung very good players before.

difficult for a regular TE to learn how to play NFL TE. Now can you imagine if that guy has only played 1 season of football in the past 8 years? Seems like Thomas is a project and patience will be needed.

Good then I'll wait for him to hit the waiver wire in my dynasty.

No notes from yesterday or today because I was on the air. The radio tents don't face the practice field because they don't want anyone doing a play-by-play over the radio. I will be there tomorrow, on the air from 12-3, practice starts at 2:20p so I'll miss warmups but will have notes for you from Wednesday's practice!

Julius Thomas is still running with the first team and is learning to stay low as a blocker and use his leverage better. His fantasy value will be capped by John Fox - think 30-35 catches in a best case scenario. However, after talking with Andrew Mason http://maxdenver.com (Mase used to work for Carolina Panthers) it was pointed out that John Fox will use special weapons. Thomas and Fells is what you'll see in 2 TE sets this year.

Thomas has the most physical upside of any TE to ever play under John Fox (Wesley Walls was in the twilight of his career when Foxy took over in Carolina).

Dynasty wise you have to love the upside of Thomas. Re-draft wise take him late as a TE2 and look for him to emerge late this year like Jimmy Graham did last year for the Saints. Not having Thomas ranked in the top 40 of rookie picks is ridiculous.

Cecil, you've heaped alot of praise towards Julius even thrown out the "Gates" word several times............do u expect to see just glimpses and more towards the end of the year like Antonio in his rookie year or are expecting more of a explosion from the getgo? I'd guess more of a Gronkowski type season but what do u realisticly expect?
Cecil addressed both the points in the post immediately prior to yours.

bumping this thread for Jeremiah Johnson insight....getting a lot of questions about what I saw from him at training camp.

deep dynasty guys need to remember Mario Fannin here, excited to see him come back next year.

Unbelievably, I like the Broncos chances to win the AFC West a lot. Right now:

Denver 7-5/ 3-2 division record / 6-3 conference record

Oakland 7-5/ 2-2 division record / 5-5 conference record

Broncos remaining games:

Chicago

New England

at Buffalo

Kansas City

Raiders remaining games:

at Green Bay

Detroit

at Kansas City

San Diego

I think 10-6 is very realistic for the Broncos at this point. Chicago's offense is pathetic without Cutler and Forte, Buffalo is horrible now, and the Chiefs are more than beatable. Even if they lose to the Patriots, those other three games are winnable.

The Raiders will most likely lose at Green Bay. But can they sweep those final three? Not even sure about that. Detroit will be tough, and the division games are always tough (although SD could be completely in the tank by then).

But even if the Raiders win out after losing to GB, if the Broncos do the same aside from the NE game, the Broncos would win the division. Pretty unbelievable.

Cecil, I just want to thank you again on the early heads up on McGahee - without your reporting, he doesn't end up on my teams (as if people care)

McGahee has been an incredible beast all season. Wow.

Oh yeah - nobody better mention Knowshon's injury, because we all know WIllis was tearing it up before that too

Agreed, but I will add that Moreno made the triple option work. Since he has been out it hasn't been nearly as effective.

With the AFC West winner all but guaranteed to get the 4 seed in the AFC, this weekend's game against the Patriots really isn't that important. Sure, everyone wants to see how the Broncos and Tebow do against the Patriots, but with the final two games against the free-falling Bills and Chiefs, the Broncos can lose this weekend and still win the division by winning the last two. Heck, even if they lost to the Bills, beat the Chiefs and finished 9-7, the Raiders would have to win out to steal the division, and I just don't see this Oakland ripping off three straight to the end the season right now.

Apparently what I said in my previous post was correct, and with the Raiders losing yesterday, the Broncos can now win the division by simply beating the Chiefs in week 17. It doesn't even matter if they lose to the Bills this weekend; beat the Chiefs and they win the division. At 9-7 under that scenario, they would have the tiebreaker over the Raiders (better record vs. common opponents) and the Chargers (better division record) if either of them would win out and also be 9-7.

Thanks for the breakdown. So, people thinking Denver D this week for their Championship game might want to reconsider, no?

Not at all. The Broncos can still clinch the division if they win, the Chiefs beat the Raiders, and the Lions beat the Chargers. Besides, I doubt the Broncos will take it easy and think, "Gee, I guess we can blow this game off and just worry about winning next week." The defense will be looking to get back on track against a struggling Bills team after getting gashed by the Patriots.

Lions don't even need to beat Chargers. One Denver win or one Charger loss eliminates them from contention for the division title.

Who are you guys hoping/thinking the Broncs will play in the playoffs? I haven't really looked at that stuff, yet.

Ah, that's right. Thanks for the reminder!

They'll likely play whichever team doesn't win the AFC North out of Baltimore and Pittsburgh.
