Raiders sign QB Edwards, Marcel Reece, others

Oakland made several signings official today but not the one we were hoping for. Despite a general lack of interest in Free Agent TE Zach Miller the Raiders have not signed, or at least announced, the signing of Miller.

An inside source says Miller may have already inked a deal, but we heard the opposite yesterday from a player. We'll keep you posted...

That’s what you get when you cover the Oakland Raiders. While its frustrating, we love it.

The Raider Mystique...

One of the biggest stories today is the signing of QB Trent Edwards.

Edwards was drafted by the Bills in the 3rd rnd (92nd overall) in 2007. Inconsistency and injury plagued his career but so did a worse than bad Offensive line. In 2009 Edwards was sacked 18 times in the first 5 games but unsympathetic Buffalo fans named Edwards "Captain Checkdown" for his supposed inability to get the ball down field to T.O. and Lee Evans.

He and we hope he can get back on track in Oakland and function well if and when called upon.

The Raiders also re-sign FB Marcel Reece, ST ace and LB Sam Williams, OT/TE Khalif Barnes, DT/DE Desmond Bryant, and LB Bruce Davis Jr.

Reece had a break out year and helped re-define the FB position. Not only that, he seems like a pretty cool guy...

Williams has been a locker room inspiration and a Special Teams fixture for years.

Barnes made waves with a TD catch and as a valuable "Tackle eligible" or extra TE in Oakland’s extremely successful "Jumbo Packages." Though he wanted to land a starting gig elsewhere, he's a welcome re-addition.

Desmond Bryant suffered an elbow strain last pre season and it seemed to plague him through out the year. Hopefully he's 100% because he showed in the season closer against KC that coming off the edge, he's a force.

Bruce Davis Jr. is a Legacy who'll help us out on ST and as a back up since Thomas Howard departed for Cincy.

More to come including day 3 practice notes...

Practice Notes Day Three

Day three of Raider practice started with newly re-signed Raider FB Marcel Reece making catches on the sideline. As we reported earlier, Reece joins a host of Raiders who re-signed.

Two that didn't are FA TE Zach Miller and OT Jared Gaither who apparently failed the Oakland medical. The Raiders re-signed OT Khalif Barnes instead.

One day after the departure of CB Nnamdi Asomugha rookie CB Chimdi Chekwa pops his shoulder out and headed off the field. We'll keep you posted...

Rookie Lineman Joseph Barksdale looking good against super quick DE Lamarr Houston. We like this guy and he may have been onto something when he stated boldly before camp that he was going to take a starting slot.

RB Darren McFadden blowing the doors off people. He's the best camp RB in the game. Last year it translated to the field. We hope it does again this year.

Rookie RB Taiwan Jones has had it rough these last 3 days. He's been leveled a total of 4 times. After today’s pasting by Rolando McClain, Tai was seen on the sideline wearing a ball cap.

For what it’s worth 3 practices in, Tyvon Branch is back at Free Safety again today. Mike Mitchell at SS. Don't count out Stevie Brown.

Several minor brawls break out. Guys competing.

Rookie Center Stephen Wisniewski man handled twice in a row by Big John Henderson. He'll get it. Better now than later.

Big Richard Seymour screamed at by Coaches for hitting QB Jason Campbell.

WR/PR Nick Miller with a nice grab, same with WR Chaz Schilens with a slant in tight coverage. If he can stay healthy we've got a #1.

That’s it for practice 3.

More to come...

Raiders training camp practice highlights, notes and quotesBy Steve CorkranSaturday, July 30th, 2011 at 7:19 pm in Oakland Raiders.Day 3 brought about the first padded practice, with coach Hue Jackson keeping up the intensity that was missing at the start of the past two camps under Tom Cable.“Phenomenal,” linebacker Kamerion Wimbley said. “It was great. It was a lot of intensity in the beginning. Guys finished up great for their first day being back in pads.”Early on in practice, Jackson busted out the famed Oklahoma Drill, where players square off against each other and see who prevails. There were plenty of heated battles. As usual, the drill failed to live up to the hype, with few exceptions. On one play middle linebacker Rolando McClain laid a pretty good hit on rookie running back Taiwan Jones. A short time later, Jones returned to the field in shorts an baseball cap.Jackson said Jones suffered a “nick.” Get used to hearing that word quite a bit. It’s a catchphrase that Jackson uses for most injuries. He later said it’s either a groin or hamstring strain.Jackson said he is encouraged by what he saw from his players.“I love that,” Jackson said. “That’s the name of the game. If we’re going to be a team that’s building a bully, I can’t all of a sudden walk out there on Sunday, Monday or Thursday and say we are. We’ve got to become one, and our guys understand it’s a contact sport, and we’ve got to line up every now and then and run into each other.”Rookie cornerback Chimdi Chekwa’s left shoulder popped out of its socket during one-on-one cover drills amongst defensive backs.“Trainer!” Chekwa hollered a split second after he suffered the injury. Two trainers rushed to Chekwa’s aid and escorted him off the field. Again, Jackson referred to the injury as a “nick.”Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey missed practice for the third straight day. He spent his time watching and offering tips to the younger receivers. When asked the reason for his absence, Heyward-Bey refused to give any specifics.“I can’t really say,” Heyward-Bey said. “Just trying to get back, trying to get ready. I am in meetings and everything, staying on top of everything and being a coach on the sidelines.”He said he is receiving treatment for his undisclosed injury. When pressed, he said: “It might be a toothache.”Fellow receiver Chaz Schilens made a nice adjustment on an underthrown pass, with cornerback Walter McFadden in tight coverage. Schilens made a sliding catch, while shielding McFadden from the ball.Schilens said it’s a “blessing” being back healthy and not rehabilitating from foot and knee injuries the past two seasons.“There’s always pressure,” Schilens said. “Even the rookies we had last year. Jacoby (Ford), there was pressure on him. He knew he had to make plays. Louis (Murphy) knew he had to make plays. It just is what it is, man. We know we have to win. We know we have to go out there and make plays. The quarterbacks are depending on us, the offense is depending on us. Just the offense as a whole, everyone has pressure.”Offensive lineman Bruce Campbell actually is on the Non-Football Injury List and not the Physically-Unable-to-Perform List. He had ice on his right knee and missed his third straight practice.Undrafted rookie tackle Alan Pelc had a day to remember. Wimbley worked him over pretty good on a one-on-one pass-protection drill, with Pelc winding up on the ground. Later, defensive tackle Tommy Kelly slapped Pelc upside the head a few times during a brief skirmish. For the record, second-year linebacker Travis Goethel gets credit for partaking in the first dustup during camp. He brawled briefly with an offensive lineman before teammates intervened.Jackson confirmed that the Raiders re-signed offensive lineman Khalif Barnes. He said Barnes will get some work at right offensive tackle but not be limited to that spot for the time being. The Raiders are in need of a replacement for Langston Walker.Rookie Joseph Barksdale worked at right tackle with the first-team offense. He was joined by Jared Veldheer, Daniel Loper, Stefen Wisniewski and Cooper Carlisle, from left to right, on the line.Defensively, there doesn’t appear to be much room for long-shots or hopefuls to crack the starting lineup. Once again, the defensive line featured Kelly, Richard Seymour, Lamarr Houston and Matt Shaughnessy, the linebackers were Wimbley, McClain and Quentin Groves and the defensive backs Tyvon Branch, Mike Mitchell, Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson.Walter McFadden jumped a route by Schilens early in practice, stepped in front of Jason Campbell’s pass but dropped the sure interception. Rookie cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke also whiffed on a Campbell pass for Murphy that landed in Van Dyke’s hands at the goal line. Van Dyke dropped down and did some push-ups as punishment for his gaffe.Jackson raved about the way McClain looks in his second year as the Raiders starting middle linebacker.“Wow. Wow,” Jackson said. “What an improvement. What a different guy. Last year, obviously, I wasn’t as involved with him that way but I see a guy with a lot more confidence, really taking command of our defense, is the leader of our defense, wants that responsibility, understands that it’s time for him to play like he can play. Not that he didn’t a year ago but he knows that I expect for him to play like they play. The guys play every day so he comes to practice with that attitude. He brings it. He demands it from the rest of the defense, him and Richard and Tommy. Those guys are doing a good job.”McClain declined to be interviewed. He rarely speaks with the media. However, he said he intends to speak Sunday. The Raiders welcomed back linebacker Sam Williams and fullback Marcel Reece. Williams signed on for his ninth year, making him the longest-tenured position player on the Raiders roster. Punter Shane Lechler and kicker Sebastian Janikowski have more time here.Reece is like the handful of other free agents who aren’t allowed to practice until Aug. 4.“It’s hard, man,” Reece said of watching. “You don’t realize how hard it is until you get out here and watch them practice. You just want to get out there and get out with the fellas and work around a little bit.”Reece got a chance to watch the proceedings from a different viewpoint. He said he likes what he saw from his teammates.“Oh, we looked good, you know?” Reece said. ”You love the fast tempo, you love the hard hitting and you just want to get physical and get back with the team.”Quarterback Trent Edwards also showed up to watch practice, only hours after signing a contract. He picked the Raiders on the recommendation of former Raiders passing game coordinator Ted Tollner.Coincidentally, the Raiders coveted Edwards in 2007 out of Stanford. Instead, the Raiders used the No. 1 pick on quarterback JaMarcus Russell. Edwards was drafted by the Buffalo Bills.“I just remember visiting with coach Knapp (Greg, offensive coordinator) when he was here, and they were interested,” Edwards said. “I felt like I had a good chance coming here and now I didn’t, obviously, and now I’m back and excited to be here.”

a general lack of interest in Free Agent TE Zach Miller
Seriously? Do GMs around this league just not watch Raider games? I mean, don't get me wrong, I will be extremely happy if we retain him and if this means keeping at less money then great. I just don't get how he is not getting strong interest from a bunch of teams.ETA: He failed his physical?

Buffalo fans named Edwards "Captain Checkdown" for his supposed inability to get the ball down field to T.O. and Lee Evans.
I did not see a lot of Bills games with Edwards. So, is this because of him as a QB (not having arm strength or poor accuracy or just not having the huevos to stay in the pocket) or because he had such a bad line that he had to check down and get rid of the ball quick? Any ideas? Because if it was all about him- he does not seem like the Raider QB type.

I remember back when he was drafted, there was some scenarios where we could have take Calvin instead of JaMarcus and then taken Edwards in the 2nd round. I think he's a smart QB, and caught a bad break going to an awful team in Buffalo. He really had no chance, and was forced to be a checkdown artist. He's an upgrade over Boller, and given the time in the pocket, is a decent game manager. I don't expect he'll compete with soup, but he's not being asked to. Edwards gives us a safety net, and can conduct the run heavy offense if needed should Campbell get dinged up for a game or two. I am happy with this signing.

Looks like Huff is coming back. I don't see any contract details yet, but I hope they didn't break the bank to retain him.

Done deal! I am happy to have Huffy back. I think much of the nation has underappreciated what he brings to the table. He's improved each year, and last year was probably his best year. I think the key is Rod Woodson. Huff is going to learn a lot from Rod on the tricks of the trade in playing the single high safety. Another good signing.

Cromartie in Raiders future?

With the departure of All Pro Nnamdi Asomugha many wondered what Oakland would do to fill the substantial void.

Some thought Oakland would stand pat, like theyve done with their young inexperienced WR corps. (with less than stellar results) They do have a plethora of second yr and rookie DBs but their lack of experience and need for development could leave a lot to be desired especially for a team like the Raiders who play the game like no other.

Oakland understands this and re-signed 6 yr veteran Safety Michael Huff earlier today.

According to reports, theyre also in hot pursuit of Jets FA CB Antonio Cromartie. The Jets will do everything in their power to keep him and Oakland certainly doesnt want to over pay for Cromartie when they couldve ponied up the money to keep Nnamdi.

The injury to rookie CB Chimdi Chekwa likely wasnt the impetus for pursuing Cromartie but it may have made the situation a little more urgent. No official word on the extent of Chekwas injury but judging by his reaction and the way he looked leaving the field, it aint good.

We wish him the best and anxiously await word on his return but a move toward snagging a solid veteran CB to help ease the loss of Asomugha would make us all feel better.

Practice Notes Day Four

Rookie CB Chimdi Chekwa was at practice today but watching from the sidelines...and wearing a sling. The shoulder injury he suffered yesterday will slow his learning process but probably isn't the reason Oakland’s in pursuit of Jets CB Antonio Cromartie.

The Raiders need veteran presence with the departure of Nnamdi Asomugha and the pursuit of Cromartie and today’s re-signing of Safety Michael Huff is a good start.

Huff joined also recently signed team mate OT Khalif Barnes on the sidelines watching today’s session which was less intense and more intensive than the last three days. Until 8 on 9 drills.

WR Louis Murphy scorched 2nd yr DB Jeremy Ware by nearly 20 yards after Ware bit on a play fake.

Murphy has looked good so far, better than DHB who seemed bewildered when his "toothache" response to an inquiry about his inability to pass medical was taken seriously.

Bey was sidelined last year during pre season for reasons that still remain unclear.

What is clear is that one of our favorite rookie pick ups, WR Denarius Moore, is starting to give Murphy some competition.

Its cliché' but we do want Moore.

Bey was joined on the sidelines by second year OT Bruce Campbell and rookie RB Taiwan Jones. Jones has a hammy or groin strain.

WR Chaz Schilens threw his bid with a nice practice high-lighted by an over the shoulder snag on a deep strike down the right sideline.

With the departure of Nnamdi Asomugha to greener pastures in Philly, Oakland is looking at Jets CB Antonio Cromartie. The Jets were said to be furiously making trades to get under the salary cap to pay Cromartie.

Makes me want him even more...

Nnamdi pretty much stated money was not the issue and that "other teams" would've given him more money *ahem* Oakland *cough* and alluded to the fact he wanted to play on a team with a shot at a title. Apparently he feels that isn't Oakland.

We don't think Philly is either.

Maybe not a super serious injury though. This report says he should only miss a few weeks:

WR Ford suffers broken hand

By Steve Corkran

Sunday, July 31st, 2011 at 5:46 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Hue Jackson just revealed to the media in his Sunday news conference that second-year wide receiver Jacoby Ford suffered a broken left hand and could be out a couple of weeks.

The Raiders are counting upon Ford to be one of their primary playmakers this season on the heels of his stellar rookie season last season.

Ford appeared to hurt his hand during practice Saturday. He was spotted with his left hand wrapped afterward but did not speak with the media.

Ford’s absence gives younger receivers more of an opportunity to press their case for inclusion on the 53-man roster.

Broke free from the player interviews to deliver this news. Headed back down to conduct some player interviews. I shall be back at you in awhile.

The two week time frame for Jacoby Ford seems optimistic. I remember Michael Bush's broken thumb last year. I just hope he comes back in time for the regular season. Cross your fingers.

FWIW, Chaz, Murphy, and rookie Denarius Moore were catching everything within range and were tearing it up in practice #4. The rest of the guys are stepping up their game. DHB sits and watches with some obscure injury, not surprisingly.

It'd be nice to go after Malcom Floyd and the word is his price has dropped, and that SD seems unlikely to re-sign him. His initial asking price was $5M, but word is that he is going to have to sign for half that. I hope Al makes his move, though there is no rumor to suggest Raider interest.

I know this sounds crazy, but does anyone think there is a possibility that DHB is at risk of being cut or traded? This phantom injury business is weird and I would assume his cap number is high from his rookie deal. In fact, if it came down to it, cutting DHB to free up cap room required to resign Zach Miller would be a no brainer if that was what had to be done. I guess it is also possible they are in the process of restructuring his contract.

The whole thing is just odd.

It could be a bigger cap hit to cut him than to keep him. I heard his base this year is only 1 million. He could still be cut like we cut like Russell but dont count on it. DHB actually trains and practices hard. He's not a bad teammate, we just overpaid/overdrafted him.

Let's assume Moore is a keeper. Murph, Ford, DHB, Moore. And I assume Chaz. I'm not seeing the room for a Floyd, who is not a #1 receiver.

Have to like I am liking the energy and pace I am reading about at Camp Hue.

By Steve Corkran

Sunday, July 31st, 2011 at 7:25 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Day 4 of Camp Hue brought about a welcomed break for those 30 years old or older. All players who reached that threshhold were given the day off as a means of letting their bodies heal from the first three days of Raiders coach Hue Jackson’s physical camp.

That didn’t stop Jackson from putting the other 65 players or so allowed to practice through the paces, with an emphasis on third-down plays.

*Running back Darren McFadden looks rather serious about reaching the undisclosed lofty goals he set for himself this season. He is making players miss on a routine basis, making sharp cuts into the open field and blowing past would-be tacklers with ease. It says here, don’t be surprised if he surpasses his yardage total from his breakout season last year.

*Rookies Denarius Moore and DeMarcus Van Dyke split time with Nick Miller on kick return duties. That job figures to go to Jacoby Ford before all is said and done, but it doesn’t hurt to know what you have in case Ford gets hurt.

*Roy Schuening replaced Cooper Carlisle at right guard in Carlisle’s absence — he was given the day off — and he looked the part. At one point, assistant line coach Steve Wisniewski singled out Schuening, let out a holler, ran to the line and patted Schuening onthe backside for a job well done. Schuening has spent time with the Raiders on their practice squad.

*Moore made an impressive catch of a laser pass from fellow receiver Edward McGee, who has experience at quarterback. “We got another arm, we got another arm,” an unidentified player yelled upon seeing McGee cut loose.

*Linebacker Kamerion Wimbley was someone to stay away from during practice Sunday. Those who crossed his path usually ended up on the ground. Wimbley flattened tight end Kevin Brock with a forearm shiver during a seven-on-seven passing drill, and he later laid out Miller in full-team drills.

*Second-year left offensive tackle Jared Veldheer got beat by defensive end Matt Shaughnessy in a pass-protection drill the first timne they squared off. Wisniewski pulled aside Veldheer, gave him some pointers on his stance and footwork and sent Veldheer back in the line of fire. Veldheer stoned Shaughnessy the next two times.

*Rookie right offensive tackle Joseph Barksdale did an impressive job holding his own against second-year end Lamarr Houston during pass-protection drills. Barksdale is competing against veteran Khalif Barnes for the starting spot held by Langston Walker last season.

*Backup quarterback Kyle Boller is well known for his arm strength. It was on full display on a deep pass to receiver Chaz Schilens down the right sideline. Schilens fought through a pass interference from strong safety Tyvon Branch and hauled in the pass, just before he got flattened by safety Stevie Brown. Schilens added a leaping catch on an in route, just before he got drilled by rookie Zac Etheridge. Both times, Schilens bounced to his feet.

*Jackson said that he is confident in the Raiders getting running back Michael Bush and tight end Zach Miller in the mix soon. “Those things are going to resolve themselves soon,” Jackson said.

*Jackson speaks at length about the work ethic of his players and coaches. Long after practice, offensive line coach Bob Wylie was spotted on the field putting his starting offensive linemen through drills and working on technique, while Schilens was off to the side catching balls spit out from a machine.

*Free safety Michael Huff said he was amused by all the stories during the offseason that had him headed to the Dallas Cowboys or somewhere else. He said he and the Raiders had an understanding that he would be back once he was allowed to re-sign. It wasn’t that he didn’t have any other offers, though.

“I could have (left), yeah, but like this whole time I didn’t take any visits, didn’t take any phone calls or nothing,”Huff said. ”They called, but I didn’t answer.”

Huff said he still is the free safety. However, he intends to “do it all.”

“Whatever the defense needs, I’ll do it,” Huff said. “I’ll play dime, I’ll play a little linebacker in there – I’m not really too big but I’ll do anything to help the defense. I just want to win. That’s the main thing is to win and make plays.”

Huff isn’t allowed to practice until Thursday, along with the other veteran players who signed contracts since the lockout ended.

*Jackson said it doesn’t appear as if the shoulder injury suffered by rookie cornerback Chimdi Chekwa is anything “major.” Chekwa’s left arm is in a sling as a result of his shoulder popping out during a drill Saturday.

*Jackson said that receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey is day to day. Neither Jackson nor Heyward-Bey will say what’s wrong with Heyward-Bey. He has not practiced since camp began Thursday.

*Chris Johnson said he is eager to get back in the starting lineup after losing the job to Stanford Routt last season. The opportunity is there now that Nnamdi Asomugha no longer is around to lay claim to the right side.

“I always looked as myself as a starter in this league,” Johnson said. “My whole thing was, once I lost that starting spot last year, I always looked at myself as a starter, so I don’t really worry about getting back in the lineup. It’s just a business. And like I said, at the same, I’ve been hungry the whole time so it’s just my time to get back in and do what I know I can do and show everybody what I can do.”

*Shaughnessy is the hardest-working player in camp, according to Jackson. It’s only a matter of time before he gets the kind of leaguewide recognition he deserves, Jackson added.

“I’ve said earlier this year, that I think he’s about to hit his stride and I really believe that,” Jackson said. “I think he’s close. He’s got to do it consistently over time, like any players does in this league that people say are great players. But he works at it and there’s not a harder worker on this football team and there’s not another player with more desire than he has, so he’s getting there. He’s very close in my opinion.”

*Jackson spent an inordinate amount of time talking about the myriad players who have shined during the early part of camp. We’ll let Hue take it from here:

“I’m not going to tell you that there’s a surprise,” Jackson said. “I’m very excited about what our quarterback is doing. I think Jason (Campbell) is doing a fantastic job. He’s doing really good job. (Rolando) McClain, is doing a good job. Tyvon Branch is everything I’ve said he is. I feel very comfortable where he is and where he’s going.

“Obviously, Jared Veldheer, he’s second year in the league. (Stefen) Wisniewski, I mean ’cause he’s playing center. He’s playing a lot of snaps and he’s running the show up there and he’s done a tremendous job. Obviously, Louis Murphy today just had an outstanding day.

“But there’s so many players I could talk about, individually, but collectively, I think our whole team is starting to get it, of what it takes to play, week in and week out, day in and day out every time you walk out here on this field, to get better. That’s probably what I’m most excited about. The team, the attitude, the conviction of coming out here with a purpose to play. I mean, there’s young men out there now working at their skill. That’s what it takes. These guys what to be good and there’s no substitute for hard work.”
Excited to read about the development of Shaugnessy and Houston.

Shefter reports the Raiders are hosting Lofa Tatupu.

Interesting. Wonder if he is competition for Groves and Goethel at WLB.

wonder what he's looking for. shocked he hasnt gotten HMiller's deal already RT @RavensInsider: Zach Miller visiting SEA today, per source.

Uh oh...

I didn't realize his cap number was so low this season. Hmmm. I just think his joking with reporters about how he "has a toothache" was weird when talking about why he was not practicing. Maybe it is nothing.

Dang it. Do not want to see us lose Miller. I have a feeling they won't let him leave Sea without first signing a contract. You just know Carroll and Cable will be pitching him hard.

I dont think his cap figure is that low but we could take an even bigger hit from his bonuses this year by cutting him just to not pay the 1 million salary (if that's the figure). When a player gets a big signing bonus, it gets spread out over a few years. When you cut a player, that money is still due. The bulk of the 26 million in dead money that is eating up our cap came from Asomugha's voided contract. There are also other bonues that are performance based that can affect a cap. The only savings comes from money that hasnt been paid yet like this year's salary.

Practice Notes Day Five

Participation in today’s practice was a little light including the usual cast of characters, DHB, Bruce Campbell and Taiwan Jones but also missing was newly minted multi-millionaire LB Kamerion Wimbley. His new 5-year $48 million dollar contract ($29 million guaranteed) means, under the new CBA, that he is not allowed to practice until the 4th.

He's now paid more, but less mouthy than, James Harrison.

It also means CB Nnamdi Asomugha could've signed with Oakland and chose not to. He mentioned in his Eagles press conference money was not the main factor and now we know for sure it wasn't.

Is that a slap in the face? Yes. Yes it is, but it’s also a business and that’s the way of it.

Rookie CB Chimdi Chekwa was on the field today and without a sling but he's still dinged up. Jacoby Ford was in attendance too with a small cast on his broken hand.

HC Hue Jackson likes the intelligence and leadership he sees in 2nd yr MLB Rolando McClain.

So do we.

Wimbley's contract could mean Lofa Tatupu's visit may have been in vain. The former Seahawk cap casualty is scheduled for a visit to D.C. later in the week.

Rookie draft pick Richard Gordon seeking to take advantage of Zach Miller's journey to Seattle. Several nice catch and run plays make him stand out.

McClain and veteran RB/Special Teams ace Rock Cartwright got into it with four hard hitting exchanges. Cartwright's 5-8, 215, McClain's 6-3, 255

No quit in the Rock. He looks to lead the Raiders Special Teams like he did last year turning in play after game changing play.

Rock spent a lot of time last season soaking sore muscles in the ice tub and we bet he's got an hour or two scheduled today.

Thank you Mr. Cartwright for being an unsung work horse. It’s players like the former 7th round draft pick as much as anyone else who help mold Champions through selfless dedication and leadership by example.

Wimbley deal done could clear the way for Miller. Tom Cable and Seattle inked Gallery after Davis refused to offer him big money. I dont think that is the case with Miller. I'm thinking we sign him tomorrow.

I've given up hope. I think Zach is gone.Twitter reports that Zach's signing with Seattle & it should be done by morning

Probably more than just competition. Our run D would likely be the best its been since the Superbowl year. Especially if McClain takes it up a gear like expected.

On a different note: What kind of compensatory pick will the Raiders get for losing Namdi?

Is a third round pick the highest pick a team can receive?

Yes, we could get a third round pick IF we dont sign any big name free agents from another team. Its a secret formula but here is a good link.http://www.rotorob.com/2010/01/29/does-anyone-understand-nfl-compensatory-picks/Remember we dont have a 2nd or 4th round pick in 2012 because of trades for Barksdale and Jason Campbell. So we could definately use another third round pick.

Raiders agree to $48 M, 5-yr deal with LB Wimbley

By JOSH DUBOW - AP Sports Writer

2011-08-01 21:27

NAPA, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Raiders once again spent big to lock up one of their own key players, signing a five-year, $48 million contract with linebacker Kamerion Wimbley on Monday that gives the team more room under the salary cap and Wimbley $29 million in guarantees.

``It was in my best interest and the team's best interest to try to work out something long term to try to get some players in here this year to help make us a better team,'' Wimbley said. ``I was with that. I'd just like to thank Al Davis and the Raiders organization to allow me the opportunity to be here for more years and to give me the chance to prove myself and play for the Raiders.''

Now the question remains whether the Raiders will be able to use the salary cap savings to get two more of their free agents into camp: unrestricted tight end Zach Miller and restricted running back Michael Bush.

Miller, who has led the Raiders in receiving the past three years, was reportedly in Seattle visiting the Seahawks on Monday, raising questions about whether he will stay in Oakland.

``Zach was a Raider last year, we want him to be a Raider now,'' coach Hue Jackson said. ``That thing is going to come to a head here soon. It has to. I feel good about where we are and, hopefully, he'll get back to us, we'll get back to him, and we'll try to get something resolved.''

Oakland gave out big deals in the offseason to keep defensive tackle Richard Seymour and cornerback Stanford Routt and placed the franchise tag on Wimbley to keep him for at least another year.

Wimbley had been set to play for the $11.3 million franchise tag tender before agreeing to the long-term deal that makes him one of the highest-paid linebackers in the game. Now he knows he will have to deal with the pressure that comes with his lofty salary.

``The new contract has to be earned so I definitely look forward to the opportunity to go out and playing and earning every bit of the contract,'' he said.

It's been quite a year so far for Wimbley and his contract. The Raiders originally hoped to use a $3.5 million buyback option to keep Wimbley under contract for next season for just over $4.1 million.

But the NFL determined in February that the deal violated rules prohibiting base salaries rising more than 30 percent in a year. That led to the Raiders decision to use the franchise tag.

Then with Oakland looking to lower this year's salary cap hit from the $11.3 million franchise tag, Wimbley got an even bigger deal that spreads out the salary cap hit.

``The Raiders showed how important Kamerion is to the franchise,'' said his agent, Joe Linta. ``He is elated and happy to make his future with the Raiders and help get them a championship.''

Wimbley entered the NFL with high expectations after being drafted 13th overall by the Cleveland Browns in 2006. He had 11 sacks as a rookie in a promising start to his career.

He was unable to match that production in his final three seasons in Cleveland, recording 15 1/2 sacks in that stretch and was traded to Oakland by new president Mike Holmgren for a third-round pick.

Wimbley quickly thrived in Oakland, playing outside linebacker in the base 4-3 defense and then moving to defensive end in passing situations to take advantage of his pass-rushing skills.

``He is so versatile,'' linebacker Quentin Groves said. ``He is big and athletic, can stop the run on first and second down and then rush the passer on third down. He is a great guy in the locker room as well. If somebody has a question, they go to Kam. He is a silent leader. He leads by actions and by example. He doesn't say a whole lot, but every now and then he tries to joke around a little bit. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.''

He led Oakland with nine sacks last season and is being counted on for even more this year.

``He's a tremendous player, a tremendous young player,'' Jackson said. ``I know he has nothing but an unbelievable upside ahead of him. Nine sacks a year ago, I expect more than that, more of that, and he'll do that for this organization.''

NOTES: The Raiders get a day off Tuesday. ... S Mike Mitchell missed practice with what Jackson described as a nick. ... Jackson said the Raiders talked to free agent LB Lofa Tatupu, recently released by Seattle.

Zach Miller to Seattle. The Raiders front office screwed up. Morons.

Schefter reported the contract as a 5 year, $34 million w/ $17 million guaranteed. The Raiders should have paid that to keep him.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! :cry:Who do we have at TE now other than blockers?

I'm far more angry with the loss of Miller then the loss of Nnamdi. Stupid to have not signed him earlier.

Years of poor cap management coming back to haunt? I can see no other reason to let Miller get away.

I really didn't think we'd lose Asomugha and Miller. Raiders run game and team morale both take a pretty solid hit IMO. Does anyone have splits last year with and w/o Miller? Marcel Reece at TE? Carlson? Gordon? Definitely an unexpected hole in the roster for me as armchair GM.

That's a lot of money for a TE. It sucks because Miller is still young. Dont know if he is worth it though.I dont want any of the FA TEs out there. We dont need Boss, I'd rather give rookies Gordon and Ausberry their shot. Would be nice if we could trade for Jacksonville's Zach Miller but isnt going to happen.

This feels like a gut punch. No way can anyone reason why Al overpaid 3 guys $70M in guaranteed money and not find $17M in the couch cushions for Miller. Unreal!

"The departure of TE Zach Miller seems like a big blow to Oakland but it may be part of a new master plan..."

The Saunders Strategy

Why? Why? Why?! That’s the question on Raider fans minds. It seems like the Raiders have lost serious ground since the end of last season, but that’s only to the untrained eye...

The Raiders did re-sign a host of players and added others in FA but two key "losses" had fans shaking their heads.

First, Pro Bowl CB Nnamdi Asomugha jumped ship in an 11th hour deal with Philadelphia. Nnamdi claimed there were other teams willing to pay more for his skills but he said money wasn't really a factor. We call bull####.

Yes, Philly has constructed a decent paper tiger with its busy off season but Mike Vick has never played a full season, VY is a nut case who can't pass from the pocket, Broderick Bunkley left for Denver and the Eagles Defense will be run this year by an Eagle Coach with 13 yrs of experience in Philly...on Offense.

Offensive Coordinator Juan Castillo replaced fired Shaun McDermott and we see growing pains.

We feel like Mr. Davis painted himself into a corner (pun intended) by paying Nnamdi $17 million for last years performance and knew that under a capped 2011 there was no way he could improve the team and offer Nnamdi a massive contract. He stated and showed the money he paid Nnamdi could be used to pay 2-3 other quality players.

Losing Nnamdi hurts, but keeping him could've hurt more, plus Mr. Davis sees that our solid looking pass rush should help whoever we field in the secondary this year.

Second, minutes ago, TE Zach Miller signed a 5 yr $34 million dollar ($17 mill guaranteed) contract with Seattle. The market was a virtual wasteland for Miller until the 11th hour call by Seatown and Miller jumped at it.

Oakland freed up cap space by long terming franchised LB Kam Wimbley but paying Miller was never in the cards. The Pro Bowl

TE actually was an alternate who backed his way in after others bowed out but that honor and his 3 yrs of leading the team in catches called for a salary the Raiders weren't willing to pay.

Miller also struggled blocking, gave up several sacks and cost several TDs for holding infractions.

His viability was less the issue and while a factor, nor was the money in our opinion.

Miller himself said moments ago he was "surprised" going into the last year of his rookie contract that a contract extension with the Raiders was not worked out.

When Oakland resigned T Khalif Barnes it may not have been for him to compete for the starting RT spot but to continue Oakland’s successful Jumbo project where Barnes or another O lineman was added as a "TE". Though Barnes did catch a TD last year, his job as a receiver wasn't really the appeal.

Oakland has 3 TE's on the roster, 2 of them are rookies and Brandon Myers has shown little that he is ready to take over for Zach.

So "Why?" did Davis let Miller get away? Well, he simply could be slipping.

Or, he could also be crafting a new game plan.

The addition of O coordinator Al Saunders hasn't drawn a lot of attention partly because Saunders career was considered on the decline but with Raider weapons blazing speed and a familiarity with QB Jason Campbell, the Raiders could be onto something no one else really sees...yet.

Saunders helped push the St. Louis Rams to a Super Bowl and helped make "The Greatest show on Turf" a household name. Saunders offensive genius also helped Marshall Faulk make the HOF.

Davis is familiar with what Saunders can do because when the prolific Offensive Coordinator was coaching up Division rival Kansas City, they led the League in offensive output from 2002 to 2005.

Picture now RB Darren McFadden in place of Faulk and you can begin to see where Mr. Davis may be heading. McFadden has been woefully under used as a receiver to this point and truth is, he may be the best "WR" on the roster.

Under Saunders we'll get a chance to see that.

Tight end is an important component and Miller was a valuable player for Oakland but if what we think is happening really is, it would help to explain why Oakland wasn't willing to break the bank to keep Miller at a position that may be being devalued by a newer system.

They might miss Miller but they may be too busy throwing to DMC, FB Marcel Reece and their WRs to care.

This seems like a lot of spin. I don't see a Bruce or Holt anywhere on this roster, DMC can't complete a season let alone match Faulk & I won't waste time with Campbell versus Warner. Losing Miller is ridiculous after the money they've pi**ed away in past.

I know the sky seems like it's falling Raider fans but we've already seen how the team does without Miller and Nnamdi on the field and actually they're not too bad.

Both Nnamdi and Miller missed games last year and when they did play after heir injuries they were not game breakers (especially Miller).

The defense should be solid again and could actually be terrifying with improvements from young guys like McClain, Shuagnessy, and Houston. The offensive side of the ball did well once Ford got some burn and as long as the Raiders re-sign Bush, there will always be an effective run game.

Losing Miller does hurt, but if we even sign a middling TE like Kevin Boss, I don't think we'll miss him too much.

Correct, there are NFL pundits who have been praising the Raiders offseason, (of course, they may change their tune). They are very impressed with Hue Jackson as head coach, and Saunders as OC. We have a tremendous young front defensive front 7, who were already pushing the league lead in sacks. Their backfield has some promising young DB's and the impact of Rod Woodson will be huge. The O-line will continue to grade holes for arguably the best tandem of RB's in the NFL. Jacoby Ford is a future superstar at WR, and we have a healthy Chaz Schilens and emerging Louis Murphy and Denarius Moore. At TE, we have a significant hole, but we have 2 young rookies in Ausberry and Gordon who are going to make their impact based on this opportunity. Special teams, we're aces with Jacoby Ford returning kicks, Lechler punting, and Jano kicking. ST is a strength. So, the Raiders still have excellent coaching, good defense, excellent run game, emerging passing game, excellent special teams. Did I mention Huge Action? Raiders are gonna be alright, without Nnam and Zach. You'll see.

Have no problem with Aso leaving. Expected that & it's not like Raiders have been to playoffs with him. Miller was a guy you grow around. The league is littered with dynamic TEs & we just lost ours. Especially hurts for a franchise with a TE history from Chester to Casper to Christensen. In addition, we don't have the strongest WR corps in the league. Lots of potential but 2 are currently injured & Schillens is only matter of time. I'm excited for Jackson, Saunders and the potential on D (minus the secondary), but gotta question the spending at times.
