2011 Oakland Raiders In-Season Thread (3 Viewers)

Coach, I respect your posts but what's the point in even dreaming about the playoffs?A halfway decent team will beat us by 24 in the first round at this point.
This is the NFL kid. Your attitude will change when the Raiders beat Detroit. Put the beatdown behind you and look forward. Packers lost Jennings, Pittsburg is dealing with some key injuries, and a Pee Wee team could score against the Patriots. Anybody could be the next team to lose their QB. We were lucky to lose ours before the trade deadline. Denver was one of the worst teams in the league a few weeks ago and now they are the hottest. This is the NFL.

Never give up. Until we are confirmed eliminated. But all this attitude or bad coaching excuses can't mask the real problem. You just can't survive the rash of injuries the Raider have had.

DMC was the superstar, much like Paul Crewe (Burt Reynolds) in the longest yard. He made everyone around him better. You also can't suffer losses of your two playmaking wideouts and field a bunch of complementary players out there and expect to win. The defense has been bad, but the truth is if you can't control the ball offensively and sustain drives, it doesn't matter how good your D is.

You just can't win with your best guys in the tank. Cold hard fact.

:kicksrock:

Back to the bottom of the barrel sheesh :bag: .. Do you guys regret the Palmer trade? I just watched the gb game and he looks just like he did in Cincy when he blamed T-Ocho for all his mistakes.

I wish. :(

I've lived through every great Raiders team. This ain't one of 'em.
Then you've lived long enough to know that attitude is half the battle.
 :football:  Usually after a Raider loss, it takes about 2 days to come out of the funk. This was just the pep talk I needed, thanks Coach.

I do think that we let a division-winning season slip away from us, but it's big picture time -- they are still in the hunt, have the challenge of needing to run the table to get there, and to RF's excellent post, it's powering through adversity that will show the true mettle of this team.

Definitely hoping Hue and the boys have the patience, poise and pride to come back from two straight humiliating defeats and put it all on the line and finish strong.

Nothing is over until it's over.

No regrets. Palmer has not looked good these last games, and has made some poor decisions. But I have no doubts about his arm as I did coming into the trade, and I think the Raiders just shored up a critical spot for them.A lot of blame can be put on Palmer, but in general he looks good, and things can only get better when the team's most talented skill positions at RB and WR are healthy and take some of the burden.

Palmer looks a LOT better when a healthy Moore and Ford are on the field. Sounds like Moore is a definite this weekend but not as good a chance for Ford?

I was hopeing to go in a different direction next year at QB before the Palmer trade. It certainly wouldnt have been as costly. I said I didnt like the trade when it happened but I also said if it gets us a ring I'll be happy. I respect the trade and have no other reason to regret it. Its too soon to say if it will work out or not. Palmer is an improvement. Going all in after Al Davis died, our team with a winning record, and our QB lost for the regular season was understandable.

The 2012 draft will suck unless we somehow make a trade. Yet our team is one of many examples of how a first round pick can hurt a team as much as it can help it. I was actually thinking we might trade down with that pick since we had traded away most of the other picks. Its not the Palmer trade by itself that hurts so much. Fact is we gave up our 2012 1st, 3rd, and 4th round picks for Palmer, Pryor, and Campbell... 3 QBs. That's the real killer. Then we also gave up our 2nd for Barksdale and Jones, our 7th for Curry. Expect another 2nd and 4th gone from the 2013 for Palmer and Curry. We got a lot of veteran FAs again next year and some key players who will probably retire in 2013 if not sooner. Its pretty much a two year window for the majority of the team.

Lambeau and GB were awesome. The game sucked.

Bush is done. Put a fork in him.

Palmer looks tired too

I hate to say it, but I don't want to make the playoffs. Keep the 1st from the trade. This team, with these injuries, just isn't very good.

I hate to post these thoughts, but they're the truth. Same reason we all bet on GB last Sunday.

RFL!! And I will still be rooting for us to win every game. :loco:

Moore Back & other practice notes:

Oakland managed to field at least one of its speed weapons for this practice but the other three have a prognosis not as rosy.

Fellow WR and Kick Return man Jacoby Ford was spotted working out with trainers and rookie RB Taiwan Jones but only for a brief period of time. He headed for the jogging back to join Jones.

WR Chaz Schilens has struggled with foot and knee injuries since College and appeared to be injured again in last weeks blow out loss to the undefeated Packers and he may be. We think the H/W/S specimen may be dinged but after missing so much time in his brief, and fading, career, he may be toughing it out.

RB Darren McFadden was MIA for the 52nd day after suffering a "mid foot sprain" against Kansas City. Weeks after we reported DMC's injury may be worse than let on, he is no closer to a viable return date. Assuming he is even ready to begin practicing (hes not) it will take at least a week to get back in football shape after such a prolonged absence. Despite what Hue Jackson has said, the odds of seeing McFadden out side of deep in the post season are rapidly dwindling.

Oakland is one of the most injury decimated teams in the League and many more have been walking wounded much of the year. Among them, wily veterans Richard Seymour and FS Michael Huff. Seymour recorded zero tackles against Green Bay and a lingering knee injury has clearly slowed him. He was at practice today though where he hasn't been in recent weeks.

Huff has been struggling with a sore ankle the majority of the season and was not present today. He may be healing up and taking a rest.

Center Samson Satele was at practice after being dinged up against the Pack. Satele has struggled as well with injuries and frankly is the one player Hue Jackson should actually sit until hes 100%. We've said it before. Satele's the smallest Center in the game and struggles with bigger NTs (especially 3-4 defenses) even when healthy.

When hes dinged it shows. WIth a sore knee he hasn't been getting second level and in combination with Oaklands lack of edge speed or receiving weapons this has been a major cause of the Raider run game collapse.

We think rookie LG Stephen Wisniewski will be playing the postion he was drafted for next season. If Satele plays expect more Oakland O line struggles (ie another loss) because Detroit DT Ndamuhkong Suh will be fresh from his 2 game suspension and ready to wreak havoc.

It's clear Oakland pretty much needs to win out if they want to make it to the post season for the first time in 8 years. If Hue Jackson is serious about it, he'll do what needs to be done and field the best O line possible.

The 2nd round pick in the Palmer trade only becomes a first if we make it to the AFC championship this year or next. Just making the playoffs wont cause it. We also have no draft picks high enough that we get any kind of improvement from finishing with a worse record. Draft picks are never a reason to not want to make the playoffs and this year more than ever.

Anyone have the stones to start Moore this weekend? Thinking about him over Celek? Just not sure how healthy he'll be.
I'm debating starting Moore over Damian Williams. Obviously Moore has a higher ceiling but he's been wildly uneven. I'll probably roll Moore out but not with confidence.

Didn't realize the specifics. In that case #### it! We look like #### though. I said we'd need to go 3-3, with 6 games left, to have any chance. It's looking like 2-4 at best.

:lmao: :lmao:

How very Raiders of us.

HOW DOES CALVIN JOHNSON GET 20 YARDS BEHIND OUR ENTIRE SECONDARY IN THAT SITUATION???
That's a ball that should be picked. WHy is McClain back there on CJ? Why is he not triple covered? And after that he's still wide open for the TD? Of course a decent toss by Palmer on 3rd ices the game, but that is some brutal, season-ending defense.

####### awful. Stafford threw a few punts today. It's unreal that they are ever caught. 2 second year players, a MLB and a S are covering megatron. Ridiculous.

And that 3rd and 3 call was beyond awul

Bresnahan should be fired. TODAY.

Tired of seeing WRs running loose in the secondary with no one within 10 yards of them.

As soon as Hue called the pass play on 3rd and 3, I knew we were going to lose. Just pathetic.

I can't stand it when we keep allowing a team to beat us in the final minutes of the game.

Now the whole f'n AFC West is in the playoff hunt.

WHERE IS THE PRIDE? WHERE IS THE POISE?

Let's start with the good news. Denver and the Jets both also lost. So if we win the next two and if one of them screws up, we can still make the playoffs. Had we won today, we would have been in control of our own destiny again. Now we again need help.

Game was close and we played hard but we again gave up too many big plays. This time it wasnt the running backs who killed us, it was the receivers. Raider D actually played the run well. The fumble by DHB and Palmer not feeling the pressure didnt help but its more to blame on the defensive secondary. The PI penalty by Boyd just left less time for our offense to get into field goal range. Better to just get burned and hope. The defensive holds made to protect the lead late in games have lost us more than one game. Playcallers on both sides of the ball need to start giving our offense a better chance to win the game at the end instead of relying on a defensive stop. A 65 yard field goal at sea level is too improbable.

Now off to KC for the last road game of the regular season. The Chiefs beat us in Oakland (badly) and just put the only blemish in the Packers season. They have a new and better head coach as well as QB. Its at Arrowhead where its always tough to win. An absolute must win game that will take an even better effort by the Raiders.

No chance Bresnahan is back next year now that Al is gone.
Even before yesterday's game, it's been widely rumored/discussed by Corkran/Jerry that he's probably a goner since he was Al's boy. There has even been talk of converting to a 3-4 defense, depending on who they end up choosing as their new DC. I hope they take their time and find a good GM first. But I agree, Bresh should get his walking papers on the Monday after the season ends. At this point, we had a golden opportunity slip through our hands. We went from being on the outside looking in, to controlling our own destiny to being even more on the outside looking in. 7-7 and really for all the bluff and gruff that Hue Jackson talks about building a bully (while he goes off for his manicure/pedicure  ), we aren't any better than last year with the Cable guy. This season reminds me so much of the Raiders of the 90's. Just good enough to be part of the playoff wildcard talk in the last couple of weeks, and then bow out and it's back to "wait till next year". It's very frustrating, it is what it is. A day and dollar short. :wall:

very disappointing loss.

Wasn't so mad about the 4th and 1 on the first drive because we had momentum and Moore was wide open and Palmer barely overthrew him. He also was held and the refs missed that.

I do have a problem with the raiders going into prevent defense in the 4th quarter and letting up that many points in 5 minutes. Inexcusable, and I feel it has been the story all year. The run defense actually looked pretty good, but we made Megatron look untouchable or uncoverable back there.

Imagine if Seabass had hit that kick though...would have been pretty crazy. It's funny this team still has a shot to make it, would love to see us win out at this point, but I think our last two games look a lot harder than they did a few weeks ago...

Great win today. They looked down and out after that late 4th quarter, but Richard Seymour and the defense came up big. You could see the relief on Hue Jackson's face, not so much elation, but relief. We still need some things to go our way, but with Denver losing, it's ok to dare to dream about the playoffs. :banned:

why doesn't Moore get more targets?
I think for the most part they are sending him on the deeper routes. Bey can't track a football deep but Moore can.
Moore has trouble running routes and getting seperation from the bump. Normal problems for rookies and why so many of them start their careers just running deep. Moore is running more than just deep routes but is frequently off on his timeing and/or well covered on the route. He has even cost some interceptions. Right now he best assets are his deep ball and the jump ball. Its just not smart football to throw short jump balls with the exception of the corners in the end zone. Hopefully in a couple years he'll become that complete WR. Until then just be happy Al Davis drafted him. Oakland is also still a run first team, not a fantasy havan.

Special Teams Save the Season

Sebastian Janikowski's 38 yard FG in overtime sealed the win for the Raiders and with a Broncos beatdown handed out by Buffalo, Oakland stays alive in the playoff hunt.

Here’s how the AFC Playoff picture breaks down. If Cincinnati wins, they’re in. If Denver wins the West and Oakland still wins and it’s Oakland/Cincinnati /New York Jets/Tennessee at 9-7, it’s Oakland.

If Oakland wins the West and Cincy/Jets/Titans are all 9-7, Tennessee goes. IF Oakland wins the West (or loses) Tennessee loses at Houston, Cincinnati loses and Jets win…they go.

Yikes!

If the Raiders and Broncos finish tied at 9-7, 8-7-1 or 8-8. The Donks would win the AFC West by virtue of better record against common opponents.

Meaning Denver beat Miami. Oakland didn't.

Oakland always knows it’s going to be a long day when Mike Carey and his crew are reffing their games and today was no different. The fact is, you can throw a flag on just about every single play and if you're watching one team more than the other...

Oakland got hosed several times by Carey and his crew and this game will be and should be reviewed by the League but its stands to reason Oakland AND Kansas City both played sloppy games and deserved many of the penalties they received but still, Carey's obnoxious over-officiating nearly stalled the game in the first half and nearly cost Oakland the game.

Nearly.

With a 91 yd kick-off return to start the day by CB/KR Bryan McCann Oakland managed a 28 yd FG to give them an early 3-0 lead. Lechler did his part pinning the Chiefs at their 5 on one punt and booming another 76 yards for a touchback. Field position is critical and Oakland has the absolute best in the game, maybe ever, punting for them.

Fellow Kicker Sebastian Janikowski booted the Raiders to another win with a 38 yarder in Over Time to win it and accounted for 10 of Oakland’s 16 points.

He also continues to pad the record books and prove Al Davis a genius for making him only the second kicker ever taken in the 1st round of the NFL draft.

Special Teams would've been even more prevalent had the Raiders managed to execute a beautiful end around pitch by holder Shane Lechler to TE Brandon Myers who scampered for an apparent TD but after a time out, Oakland had only 25 seconds to get set for the fake FG and was a fraction late with the snap.

Kudos to Oakland for repeatedly burning KCs Special Team units with trick plays on FG attempts. Too bad this one didn't count.

Oakland may have faltered on O and Defense but Special Teams picked up the slack in a big way and led the Raiders to a victory that keeps them alive in the hunt for not only a Wild card, but the AFC West Championship.

Oddly enough, the Chargers and Chiefs have as much say in who wins the division as do the Raiders and Broncos. Broncos host the Chiefs and the Chargers go to the Black Hole.

Raiders need to just focus on beating the Chargers. If they do, there is a good chance they'll still make the playoffs as either division champs or wildcard team but its far from guaranteed. The team cant afford to worry about the other outcomes, Just Win this next one. Dont worry about the refs, everyone knows they hate us. Just go and rattle Rivers, stop the Chargers ground game, and score plenty of points against their pathetic D. We havent blown a team out all year. I'll take a win any way but I'd love to see us head into the playoffs by blowing away the Chargers. Go Nation

Interesting that even if Broncos win, we can still get in if Bengals lose (Raiders have to win as well, of course). Of all teams, the Bengals. Next week gonna be fun.

If it comes down to a tiebreaker for the wildcard, the only team that can beat us out is the Titans, and only if the Jets arent also in it. There wont be a tiebreaker though if the Bengals win.

Denver beats us in a tiebreaker for the division regardless.

So it comes down to...

1. Raiders must win

2. Either Broncos or Bengals must lose

3. If Broncos win and Bengals lose, then either Jets must win or Titans must lose.

It's like a bad soap opera. Orton vs. his previous team, and Palmer's former team decides our playoff future. If we win, we are in. Ravens are fighting for a playoff bye, no chance they lay down vs. Bengals. Jacoby Ford returned to practice! And SeaBass made the Pro Bowl, along with Lechler and Seymour.

What's the general feeling amongst Raidernation about this game vs. SD. SD was playing great ball until they got smacked last weeekend. Oak has been a relative roller coaster this season. Does Bush push SD around or will Rivers pick apart the Oak D like Stafford did?

The feeling is that the Raiders will win or lose this game, it's in their hands. The Raiders have the better team, IMO. They have better O and D line, which is not my opinion, but a fact. If the Raiders don't turn the ball over more than the Chargers, and don't have a dozen penalties, I have a tough time seeing this team not coming out on top. Those are big IFs, however. The Raiders are the most self-destructive team in the league. By the way, Oakland has been a roller coaster? Has San Diego been a model of consistency? If so, they are in serious trouble, because they got slapped last time they played Oakland.

Can the Raiders still get the wild card with a loss? Or is it a Raider Win + Denver Win means the Raiders need additional help to get the Wild Card?

Raiders Win and Denver Loss = AFC Title?

If we both win, broncs get division title, and if Cincy loses to BAL, we get wild card. Which is funny, because we would play Texans, and Broncs play a much better Pitt or Bal team. I think. If we lose? No, I think we have to win.Broncos can't get wild card, only we can. If they lose and we win, we win division.

For the Wildcard, wouldn't Oakland need either...

Cinci Loss and Jets Win

or

Cinci Loss and Texans Win

Just saying because the Jets are losing and the Texans are tied...

From NFL.com....

REMAINING OPPONENTS: vs. Chargers (7-8)

CLINCHING SCENARIOS: Oakland clinches the AFC West with a win + DEN loss. Oakland clinches a wild-card spot with either of the following scenarios: 1) OAK win + CIN loss + TEN loss; 2) OAK win + CIN loss + NYJ win.

COMMENT: If the Jets, Bengals, Raiders, and Titans all finish 9-7, which would assume a Broncos win, the Raiders would get the No. 6 playoff seed because of a superior strength of victory.

succinctly put:JUST WIN BABY!

Penalty then bad snap on two point conversion ends our hopes for wildcard early. For us, Bengals no longer matter.

Now its division or nothing. Have to root for the Chiefs of all teams.
