Stats as of 12/4/2012:

Code:
Aldon Smith :50 tackles, 17.5 sacks, 3 FF, 0 PD, 0 int, 15 TFLJJ Watt :59 tackles, 15.5 sacks, 1 FF, 15 PD, 0 int, 27 TFLVon Miller :53 tackles, 15.0 sacks, 5 FF, 2 PD, 1 int, 24 TFLCharles Tillman :67 tackles, 0.0 sacks, 8 FF, 12 PD, 2 int, 1 TFLTim Jennings :54 tackles, 0.0 sacks, 0 FF, 19 PD, 8 int, 1 TFLGeno Atkins :41 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 3 FF, 2 PD, 0 int, 13 TFL
These guys look to be the front-runners. I haven't heard any mention of Jennings, but he leads the league in ints and PD, so that's got to be worth something, right?

Tillman, Atkins and Watt in some order are the top three defenders thus far in 2012. That's what I think anyway.

Tillman has had a great year, but I think it's a two way race.

Von Miller or JJ Watt. Smith's stats are a bit padded from one huge game, and he is more of a specialist (my perception, which may be flawed, is Miller was a year ago - he is more complete now). Pro Football Focus rates Watt the best DE against the run, and he has batted down a ton of balls (high teens?).

I would go with the Texans star.

U just don't do what watt does from that position.............when was the last time a 3-4DE challenged the league lead in sacks? Then he has more pass deflections than 90% of db,'s

I think Watt or Tillman should own this award but I figured I'd toss out a name that should be in the conversation if only due to being the anchor of my IDP fantasy team the entire season and someone I value more than Miller and Tillman (whom I also own).

Arizona's Daryl Washington

87 Tackles, 9 Sacks, 2 FF, 2 PD, 1 Int

He's a tackling machine that contributes in a lot of other areas and has been extremely consistent.

Only 1 subpar game against the Packers in Week 9. Otherwise, he's been a lock for double digit fantasy points each week simply due to tackle volume.

I think the Bears guys have been playing their way out of contention over the last couple of weeks. I think it should be a three-way race between Atkins, Watt, and Miller. Realistically, Atkins doesn't have the hype and won't get consideration, which means whoever has a better next 4 weeks between Miller and Watt should decide it.

Everyone knows about Watt's stats, but here's a great one for Miller- Von Miller has 27 tackles on running plays. The total yardage gained on those 27 plays is -9 yards.

I think Charles Tillman will win ( Chicago is the undisputed top defense this year. There was a truly ugly period for that Bears offense and that D literally carried them. I'm not sure you can say that about any other unit. Honorable mention obviously to SF, Houston, Seattle and lately Cleveland) I think Tillman will sway people because his positional value is usually very difficult to get into even basic consideration. Occasionally you have a corner like Winfield or Verner or Woodson who offer more than pass defense, but Tillman picked this year to have a career year. The other guys on the list , including Tillman, all get help, but in the cases of the other players, I think the added help hurts them. Pick your poison with Miller or Dumervil. I think Aldon Smith might get down ticked for some of those sacks being coverage sacks ( In about a year, I think people will start talking about Chris Culliver the way they talked about Revis a year ago and Scrabble three years ago. People want to push Haden and Flowers, but I think Culliver will end up more feared than both soon) I think the player who "should" win is Geno Atkins. He's dominating the line of scrimmage all game long, game after game and not getting a ton of help. I've seen teams even try to triple team him at times. The guy is a human claymore mine, every play is about relentless violence and mayhem. It's been a long time since I've seen a player who wanted to come take your lunch then beat you to death with your lunchbox afterwards. I'm not sure there is one active offensive lineman in the NFL right now who can block Atkins one on one. Apparently he also has chronic medical condition as well that makes him less effective. If Atkins is running at 75 percent, can you imagine if he was able to push 100? Unfortunately, he plays for the Bengals and his impact doesn't always translate into raw stats, so fan interest and press is probably far more muted than it should be.
Atkins added, and your sole write-in vote attributed to Atkins.

Neil Smith - 1993 Chiefs - Smith led the league in sacks with 15.When is the last time a 4-3 LB challenged the lead in sacks? Best I can find is 2001, when Peter Boulware had 15 sacks for Baltimore. That's the only other LB I can find who was in a 4-3 and had > 15 sacks in a season, asides from Von.

My vote is Watt. 15 PDs for a 3-4 end is silly. Sometimes it seems like QBs can't even throw to that side of the field without Watt knocking the ball down.

yeah, PD isn't a very old statistic, but here'sa complete list of defensive lineman with > 10 in a season:
Code:
J.J. Watt	2012	15Calais Campbell	2011	10Kevin Williams	2010	10Johnny Jolly	2009	10Jared Allen	2007	10Jared Allen	2006	10Jason Taylor	2006	11Jason Taylor	2005	10Jason Taylor	2004	11Richard Seymour	2003	10Willie McGinest	2002	10Phillip Daniels	2001	10
and the season is only 3/4 of the way through.

I can't even fathom how Watt is not considered the runaway winner.

He has 15.5 sacks, 15 PD, and leads the league in TFL with 4 games to go.

He could realistically go 20 sacks 20 PD.

TFL stats added above. Von isn't far behind Watt, and could conceivably pass him in both TFL and sacks.

Glad to see Geno on the list. His numbers are insane for a DT.

He's the leading DT in the NFL with 9.5 (tied for 8th overall) with 30 tackles and 10 assists.

The next DT on the list is Suh with 5.5 sacks (tied for 35th overall) with 21 tackles and 5 assists.

Watt is a spectacular player, but I'm glad to see Atkins get some love :)

It is Watt by every measure possible....he is as much a reason for his team's record as anyone on offense. Dominating the LOS is a huge factor and he does it in both the running & passing game. He is having one of the greatest seasons by a DL ever.

It sounds great, but that could just as easily imply that Von Miller is unable to track down RBs from behind after they gain ~5 yards or so. Still, I agree that it'll very likely come down to who plays better these remaining weeks between Watt and Miller.

Imo...

Tier #1

1. V Miller

2. J Watt

Tier #2

3. G Atkins

4. C Tillman

5. C Wake

6. A Smith

Tier #3

7. R Sherman

8. P Willis

9. D Washington

10. T Jennings

Nice list. I'll go:Tier #1 (in order, but close)

Watt

Miller

Atkins

Tier #2 (not far behind)

Smith

Tillman

Willis

In this age of offensive dominance and rules favoing offense, these are some of the best defensive peformances I've ever seen. When the next Singletary/Ray Lewis (Willis) is #6 on my list, that's saying something!

Geno Atkins for me. An absolute animal. He elevates the entire defense. Without him, they'd be mediocre.

It's too bad they don't keep a stat on penalties forced. Von was held at least 3 times yesterday, to go along with his strip-sack.

What JJ Watt is doing is historic. Every other guy is just playing their position well.

Since passes defended has been recorded (2001) Watt is the only player with 15 sacks and 15 PDs, and only 12 games have been played. There's only 6 players with 15 or more PDs this year. And for DBs, a lot of PDs might mean that the ball gets thrown at you a lot because you're not very good. For Watt we know it's not that. And it's not as if he just sits back waiting for the pass to be thrown, as evidenced by his sack and tackle numbers.

Unless Aldon Smith or Von Miller break the sack record it's going to JJ and he deserves it. He would deserve it even if they do break the record, but he probably won't get it in that case.

Watt has been scary good this year. All those tipped balls will make a sea change in how the position is played in the future.

What Miller is doing as a 4-3 OLB is pretty historic, too. How many 4-3 linebackers can you name with 15+ sacks? Besides, while the sack totals have been comparable, according to PFF, Von's been about 50% more likely to apply pressure with any given pass rush than either Aldon or Watt.
