Is Mike Kafka ready if Vick goes down?

There is legitimate concern around the Philadelphia Eagles about what would happen if starting quarterback Michael Vick went down with an injury. The current backups are third-year man Mike Kafka, veteran Trent Edwards and rookie Nick Foles. The likelihood at this point is that, if Vick had to come out of a game or miss a game with an injury, Kafka would be first in line ahead of Edwards, who didn't play in the NFL last season.

Nick Fierro spoke with Eagles quarterbacks coach Doug Pederson, who says he thinks Kafka is ready for the role of backup to Vick, and Nick sounds as though he's buying into the idea:

Kafka has the leadership tools as well. Remember, it was he, not Vick, who was the driving force behind the player-organized workouts in Marlton, N.J., during last year's labor stoppage, and his command of the offense is as good or better than any quarterback going into his third season as offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg has ever seen.

Now, if Vick were to go down for all or most of the season, it might be a different story. But for a couple of games or stretches during games when Vick might be dinged, don't expect the offense to malfunction that much just because a less talented quarterback like Kafka will run the show.

The Eagles have a good enough system and, more importantly, more than good enough talent at the other positions to remain effective.

That's the key thing to remember here. Those who fear the Eagles just ignored the backup quarterback spot this offseason might be focusing on the wrong thing. The Eagles believe in Mornhinweg, and in their system, and in the idea that a quarterback whose talents they like should be ready, by his third year in that system, to run the offense. Kafka fits that description, and as the Eagles surveyed other options for backup quarterback this offseason, they clearly didn't find anyone they thought would be better able to handle the task than Kafka would. He can't throw like Vick, but almost no one can. He can't run like Vick, but absolutely no other quarterback can. If Kafka is playing and Vick isn't, the Eagles likely will call different plays. But given the talent he'd have around him, as long as he doesn't pull a Vince Young and start throwing interceptions all over the place, it's possible to believe a game or two with Kafka at the helm wouldn't be a complete disaster.

(Rotoworld) Eagles running backs coach Ted Williams had high praise for seventh-round RB Bryce Brown Monday.

Analysis: Brown is gaining some steam as a challenger to Dion Lewis for the No. 2 gig behind LeSean McCoy. "This guy can do things other guys his size are not capable of," Williams said. "He's got speed." Brown ran a 4.48 forty at 6'0/223 and appears to be ahead of Chris Polk as training camp gets underway.

OOPs, too late on that. Bryce Brown might be the guy everyone thought Ronnie Brown could be last year. That banger. Upside is probably higher than Dion's because his skillset seems to complient McCoy's instead of mimic it.

Eagles' Dion Lewis cleared of fire-alarm charges

The story of one the NFL's more embarrassing offseason arrests has ended without any legal consequences for Philadelphia Eagles running back Dion Lewis.

The Philadelphia Daily News reported Monday that Lewis will not face charges in connection with his arrest for allegedly pulling a fire alarm outside an upstate New York hotel last month.

After returning from a night of revelry, Lewis and his brother found themselves locked out of their hotel. Their alleged solution to re-enter the premises was to bring the fire alarm into the equation. Both men were charged with falsely reporting an incident (a Class E felony) and reckless endangerment of property (a Class B misdemeanor). Their hearing was pushed back to this week to give Albany's newly designated attorney time to catch up on the case.

The D.A. concluded there was "no evidence a fire alarm was ever pulled." Dion heads to Eagles training camp Wednesday, where he's currently in line to serve as LeSean McCoy's primary backup.

From what I'm hearing Edwards probably won't make the first cut. They like Kafka too much and Foles wouldn't make the practice squad. Plus the first couple of days you hear Edwards hasn't looked so good.

 
Looks like we will be signing either Shiancoe or Shockey. I wonder if that has more to do with concerns about Harbor's ability or Celek's health...

Always loved/hated Shockey. Loved the way he played but hated the fact that he played against us twice a year. I've long thought that he'd be a really great Eagle-brash and slightly dirty, but could usually back it up and willing to do the dirty work along with making receptions. Not sure what he has left at this point, but I'm intrigued by their interest.
 
For a team that seems to have tried to do as much as possible to avoid distractions, I'm not sure the often controversial Shockey makes a lot of sense.

One day after free-agent tight end Visanthe Shiancoe visits with the Philadelphia Eagles, a bigger name will hit town. Multiple reports indicate that Jeremy Shockey will take a physical with the Eagles this week. CBSSports.com reports Shockey will visit the team Wednesday.

It's unclear how serious the Eagles' are about adding a veteran at the position. They have a strong starting tight end in Brent Celek and their backup tight end doesn't exactly have a huge role in the offense. The Eagles also might be looking to fill the coveted "tight end that says something crazy" spot on the depth chart.

Shockey and Shiancoe are great examples of how quickly things can change in the NFL. Both were reasonably productive in big roles last year, yet they are struggling to find work.

Shiancoe reportedly had a chance to sign with the Seattle Seahawks earlier in the offseason, but he misread the market.

UPDATE: Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said Shiancoe's workout with Philadelphia went well, but the team has not made a decision about a signing the free agent, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Michael Vick: Guys like Robert Griffin III 'idolized me'

A lot of folks are uncomfortable with comparisons between Michael Vick and Robert Griffin III because they have such different skill sets outside of their running ability.

One person that doesn't shy away from the comparison: Michael Vick.

"I think it's a great comparison," Vick said on WLZL-FM, via The Washington Post's "D.C. Sports Blog". "I think guys like RG3 idolized me as they grew up playing football. I think Cam and Robert Griffin III both were inspired by me and my play. And that's me being a trend setter, game transcending, and guys wanting to emulate one another. ... And I think that's what it's all about. I wanted to emulate Steve Young and be just like him, and Charlie Ward, and Randall Cunningham, guys who played before me."

Griffin, for his part, said he watched Vick growing up and loved hearing him speak at last month's rookie symposium.

"Everybody in that room was zoned in," Griffin said. "He's a guy that everything he says holds some power."

Vick talked about transcending the game and being a trend setter for young pups like Griffin. We don't really know if Newton and Griffin "idolized" Vick, but now the question is whether or not they can surpass him.

It is too much to ask Griffin to be that good in his first year, but we'd guess that most NFL observers expect Griffin to have a superior career to Vick's. Even though RG3 hasn't taken an NFL snap yet. That's the sort of hype we are dealing with, and we love it.

Great article here. I think Brown sticks and pushes smallish Dion Lewis for the backup gig behind McCoy. I don't think Lewis helped himself at all since last camp and was the second guy by default. Bryce will certainly push him.

Bryce Brown was the top-rated running back entering college football in 2009 – over Trent Richardson.The Eagles made him a seventh-round pick to insure no other team could sign him. Ability-wise, Brown is nowhere near a seventh-round grade: he’s a big back with soft hands, good burst, long speed, and finishing power.

The reason he dropped so far in the draft is past history:he left the Tennessee Volunteers after one year, sat out a year to comply with NCAA rules, and then only carried the ball three times at Kansas State before leaving the team and then entering the NFL Draft. There’s very little to see with Brown in college action. However, what’s available is filled with impressive moments.

What I like most about Brown is his vision. He’s a patient runner that knows how to press the hole and set up the cutback. Just as impressive is his ability to find small creases in an area where an opening doesn’t seem to appear until the last moment.

Here’s a play during his freshman year versus South Carolina that illustrates these skills. Tennessee begins the play in a 21-personnel, I-formation set versus a 4-3 defense with seven defenders in the box and the free safety creeping towards the line.

Brown is going to “press” and cutback through the lane that his offensive line opens as diagrammed below.

The Volunteers offensive line deserves major credit for the beginning of this play. The left tackle and left guard are going to drive the defensive end and defensive tackle to the outside and the right guard is going to slant to his left to attack the defensive tackle between him and the center in the A-gap. This frees the center to release up the middle and seal the middle linebacker to the inside. All four of these lineman execute their jobs to perfection.

Here’s how the blocking scheme sets up as Brown takes the exchange. The yellow arrow is where Brown begins to press the hole outside and help the offensive line sell the idea he’s running to the edge before he takes the pat of the red arrow through the lane where the yellow lines are drawn.

But for the play to work, the running back has to sell the press before making the cutback. According to Greg Cosell, when he asks NFL offensive coaches whether the line makes the running back look good or the running back makes the line – what seems to be a chicken or the egg argument – the answer he most common receives is that the running back makes the line.

Brown helps his line on this play by continuing to the gap between guard and tackle behind his lead fullback.

Brown’s act of running towards the outside and cutting back to the inside is described as “pressing the hole.”

This influences the defensive tackle to flow to the outside, leaving his backside gap open. The weakside linebacker holds his ground to take on the fullback, thinking he has a shot to slide off the block and tackle the runner. The defensive end takes the outside gap to squeeze the play inside to the linebacker and defensive tackle.

Once Brown sticks his outside foot into the ground and makes the hard cut to the inside, there are two gaps immediately open for the Volunteers runner.

The defense is now completely out of of position to make a play as soon as Brown plants his foot and changes direction. This is the value of a back capable of hard cuts and good acceleration in combination with patience to execute them at the right time.

Although there appears to be a two-way go with the center on the middle linebacker, as soon as Brown clears the right guard the linebacker has thrown the center to the ground, forcing one path for the runner.

At this stage of the run, it appears Brown will have a nice gain of 4-6 yards because his second level blocking either lost its battle (the center on the No.16 the MLB) or is out of position to handle the safety (No.21). However, what happens next is where the running back makes the line look good.

Brown has a tight crease no more than a foot from his fallen teammate and between the two safeties. However, he’s not looking there to lower his pads and split the defensive backs. Brown feels a second cutback to the backside of the strong safety.

This play – and this set of photos beginning with this one – is one of the best illustrations of “feel” for the cutback that I have found since I’ve been blogging.

Brown sees the strong safety getting blocked at the backside and demonstrates the balance and agility to make the cutback over his fallen lineman at full speed. This is impressive, but the bigger deal is Brown understanding that he has the defense flowing towards him in one direction and the yardage available if he bends the run against the flow. Most starting NFL runners learn to do this at the line of scrimmage, but the more talented pro prospects display that ability to change the access of pursuit with a cutback at the second level.

Brown slips behind his backside block on the strong safety to turn a good run into a great one.

Pre-injury Cadillac Williams was adept at this skill. Ryan Mathews was a first-round pick because this was one of his better skills. Adrian Peterson does it better than anyone in the league.

Brown clears this lane and gets into the open field with this second cut in the tightest of spaces.

If Brown doesn’t cut back, he’s likely on the ground at this spot on the field. Instead he’s found open territory on the opposite side of the field.

Brown now makes a third cut that takes him outside and away from the free safety in pursuit.

Brown begins to work to the right flat, gaining another 20 yards before the cornerback to that side even develops an angle to attempt a tackle.

As Brown gets into the flat, I like the awareness to switch the ball from his inside arm to his sideline arm. Another demonstration of polish that one doesn’t always see from a freshman – even an SEC freshman.

With the switch of the ball arm, Brown finishes the run with a straight-arm that wards off the defender’s grasp long enough for another nine yards, maximizing his gain as he tries to turn the corner.

Brown’s straight-arm doesn’t knock down the defender, but it prevents an immediately grasp that would have shortened his gain.

Brown finishes the play strong, gaining nine yards because he switched the ball to his opposite arm and delivered the straight-arm.

Another point about this run – and several of the runs I saw – is that Brown doesn’t appear as fast as he really is. I only began to appreciate his speed when I considered that he nearly got under this cornerback’s grasp and up the sideline after making three cuts from the left flat all the way back to the right sideline. This was a long run and Brown still had the speed after running at least 70 yards to almost beat what is normally one of the fastest defenders on the field.

If Brown is comes ready to play in the Eagles training camp, Chris Polk and Dion Lewis are going to have serious competition for a roster spot.

Analysis: No. 229 pick Bryce Brown appears to be making the most headway on Dion Lewis. "He's extraordinary in that with his size, he has little-man skills," RBs coach Ted Williams said of Brown. "He's strong. I can't wait to see him in pads and see how physical he's going to be." It sounds like Brown has a significant leg up on fellow rookie Chris Polk, but he'll have to be impressive in preseason games to truly challenge Lewis.

 
On Monday, CBSSports.com's Jason LaCanfora reported that free-agent tight end Visanthe Shiancoe was visiting the Eagles on Tuesday after meeting with the Patriots on Friday. It didn't take Shiancoe long to decide where he wanted to play, though. CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman reports he has signed a one-year deal with New England.

Freeman reports that Shiancoe's contract is worth $1.2 million and is heavy on incentives, with just $400,000 of that guaranteed, per a league source.

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports first reported the news Shiancoe picked New England.

With the Shiancoe signing, the Pats continue to pick up tight ends: obviously Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez are the stars, but they've added Jake Ballard (which made everyone in New York happy!), Daniel Fells (signed in March) and added rookie Tyler Urban through the draft.

Of course, Ballard won't be much of a factor in 2012, Fells isn't a guarantee and Urban is a rookie. Shiancoe, who averaged 42 receptions, 485 yards and five touchdowns in five years with the Vikings, provides the Patriots another tight end who can step in and produce right away as needed.

And it wouldn't be surprising if New England decides to use Shiancoe, Hernandez, Fells and Gronk in some sort of insane all-tight-end formation at some point either.

 
Just a question,

Don't they normally schedule preseason games against teams we don't play in the regular season? I know we always play the jets in preseason game 4, but it seems odd that we are playing @ Cleveland in our 3rd preseason game (The game the starters usually get the most work), and then playing AGAIN in Cleveland just 2 weeks later in Week 1 action.

That does seem a bit strange. But you know it might be kind of cool.
 
Teams typically have relationships with certain other teams and play them on a rotation in the preseason. Jets and Balt are usually always preseason games. Pitt and Cleve seem to rotate every other year. But I don't think there's any rhyme or reason to it. Its not like they'll show each other anything. It happened last time we played clev also and a few years ago we played Jax in the preseason and regular season.

The idea is that it's geographic vs the other conference. In other words, we almost always play the afc teams nearest to us: Balt, NE, Jets, Pit. It's like that all over the league.

I was thinking about this again today, and I think this actually really benefits us. Not saying the Browns will be a huge challenge week 1 anyways, but having our guys on that field, in that city, sleeping in the same Cleve hotel, etc just two weeks prior, might take away some of that 'home field advantage' cleve might have in week 1.
 
Riley Cooper broken Collarbone. Damn. With McNutt not impressing so far (I know its early), Losing out on Shiancoe, this could leave a hole for another pass catching threat. Plax time finally? TO? (jk) haha

 
I know I mentioned signing Plax early in the offseason, but I do not want him anymore. Nobody wants him and there's a reason for that. I've heard McNutt did well today and I'd give him a bunch of reps before deciding whether or not to bring in someone like Plaxico Burress for too much money to potentially be a locker room cancer.

I actually would not want the Washington Dec 23 game. Too much stuff going on around the holidays to go to a game. Cincinnati - Went to the Texans Thursday night game last year and loved it. You may not get another chance to see this young team live for quite some time

The way you listed it is my order of preference of what's left.Your buddy is a dummy, BTW. Giants on 9/30 should've been 1st pick.

I'd take Det than Was (I think that game will slip a round). I'd dig Cincy too, good up and coming team. Could care less about ATL or Carolina though it has the Monday night appeal (unless you have to get up early)

In the middle of our 2012 season ticket draft where we go back and forth to split up the tickets and torn on my next pick. FYI, John Clayton on Mike and Mike this morning and talked about visiting Eagles camp. He said, paraphrasing from memory: "I really hate to bring this term back up guys, but they do look like a dream team" and also used the word "sensational" to describe them at one point. He also mentioned that Vick has spent a ton of time studying to the point where Reid has sent him home a few times. He said Vick has spent alot of time going over and back over tape from the Cardinals game to make sure he never lets those mistakes and that outcome happen again.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the team this year. The talent is there, but they have a tough schedule and I like Michael Vick, but I can't trust him to lead us to the Super Bowl.

 
I see the talent and feel the excitement, it's certainly merited. However, I continue to carry my Andy Reid skepticism. Why should I expect that he has learned to manage a game, playcalling, time management, etc when he's repeated the same mistakes so often for the previous 13 years? And regarding the talent, sure they look great but I'm not all in until they show they can win against a physically tough opponent like Baltimore week 2. They always get beat down in games like that because the Eagles are historically soft under Reid. Talented yes, but soft. Hit them in the mouth and they will fold. That game will tell me volumes.

This is how I feel as well. I expect them to make the playoffs. I'll get excited when they start winning post-season games and show they are a legit championship contender. 14-2, 9-7...just make the playoffs and win a game or two. And stop with the dynasty talk! No post-season wins since '08. The Giants have won 2 Lombardi Trophy's since the Eagles lost their only SB appearance under Reid. They are the ones who have earned the right to talk "dynasty".

The way I see it, if you're good, you win the games on your schedule. The team that wins the Super Bowl every year doesn't necessarily have an easy road all the time. They beat who's in front of them. There are teams every year that win 13 or 14 games and you wonder how but they do. If we are truly as good as I hope we are, I think 13-3 is not out of the question.
