Schefter on AM 1000 today on the way home said he spoke with 2 of the interviewees (both of whom had been interviewed for HC positions in the past) who both said Emery was the most well prepared interview they had ever had. Both were apparently extremely impressed with the depth of the interviews.

Arians resume us far more impressive than Trestman's, and his players love him as well. He has a proven track record in the NFL. I guess I don't get the "fresh" part. The guys are 3 years apart in age. It should be Arians, easily.

About Emery being so focused on an offensive coach, out of these final four teams....only one offensive minded. And he was never a coordinator. Even though Lovie couldn't figure it out, you can have a great offense without an offensive minded HC. Just mentioning this because I was thinking a guy like Mike Zimmer should be getting a shot by now. Lots of good young defensive coaches out there. Was Phil too narrow minded?

Possibly. Nothing is set at all here as the decision has yet to be made on the head coach. But a source said that candidates Darrell Bevell and Marc Trestman are both at least open to the option of retaining Marinelli and perhaps some additional members of the defensive staff. It’s not known if Bruce Arians is thinking the same way and it can’t be ruled out. General manager Phil Emery was clear that he planned on letting his new head coach do what they considered was best. Some believe a clean break from the previous regime is the best move to make. Others like the idea of maintaining continuity – as best as possible – for a defense that has played at a high level. But the defense will not be the same without Lovie Smith, the man who ran the show on that side of the ball. It will be interesting to see what happens and no doubt the assistants that remain under contract to the Bears are anxious to see what shakes out.

While I'm not a fan of the hire, these coaches have led the Bears to 2 NFCCs and 1 Super Bowl victory, and the majority of that list were complete failures as a head coach.The combined results of those guys tells me that getting away from this mindset is not necessarily a bad thing, I just think they went about it the wrong way.

The other mindset they needed to get away from is not hiring a HC with NFL HC experience. You have to go back to Paddy Driscoll in the 50s to find a HC they hired that had done it before. And Paddy Driscoll's experience? Player/coach about 30 years before thet hired him. In that 30 year gap, between being Player/Coach, and hired by the Bears, he was never a HC at the professional level. They failed at this and miserably.

And for the record, I'm in the Hub Arkush camp of wondering why Brian Billick wasn't approached.

McCoy was my #1 choice but Trestman was my second pick, so I'm pretty stoked. ESPN says he will bring in Aaron Kromer as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Curious to see what happens on defense. I can see Marinelli being the DC and I can also see making a clean break and bringing in someone new, glad it's not my call. Come on free agency/draft/2013!

Trestman is an offensive guy, and will call the plays while Kromer helps game planning and coaches the offensive line.Trestman actually worked with Cutler before the NFL draft to get him ready for his Pro Day and workouts.Trestman cut his teeth as a classic West Coast offense quarterback, but to his credit he's shown a lot of scheme diversity in recent years (NC State, Montreal). One interesting tidbit is that he recruited Russell Wilson to NC State, believing Wilson could be one of the nation's best QBs in spite of his height.

Trestman was only in the CFL for the last five years, he was the NC State OC for a few years before that.
