Bears will speak w/ Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell and Montreal HC Marc Trestman, the first 2 candidates to be identified as finalists for job. - Adam Scheftereta: there could be more

Big blemish for Bevell is how he really lobbied for the Seahawks to bring in Tavaris Jackson to be the guy there.Ouch
Disagree. He knew the offense he wanted to run and thought Jackson could do it. He couldn't. And now he has a quarterback who can do it and the offense is excellent.

Schefter on AM 1000 today on the way home said he spoke with 2 of the interviewees (both of whom had been interviewed for HC positions in the past) who both said Emery was the most well prepared interview they had ever had. Both were apparently extremely impressed with the depth of the interviews.

About to lose Toub to Chiefs. If we replace Lovie with Trestman, we will be looking at more years of mediocrity, especially if we let Marinelli go.

Emery allowed Toub to look elsewhere.Only with Bears. If they make the right decision and get Arians, I'll be pleased.

Jeff Dickerson ‏@ESPNChiBearsWhy is Phil Emery such of fan of Marc Trestman? Those who know both men say they are very similar people making it easy to connectJeff Dickerson ‏@ESPNChiBearsIn the CFL, Trestman did not meddle in personnel. He let the talent evaluators bring in the talent and worked with what he was given.

He definitely earned an opportunity this year. But I think you're going to be disappointed. Doesn't seem "fresh" enough for Phil.
Arians resume us far more impressive than Trestman's, and his players love him as well. He has a proven track record in the NFL. I guess I don't get the "fresh" part. The guys are 3 years apart in age. It should be Arians, easily.

About Emery being so focused on an offensive coach, out of these final four teams....only one offensive minded. And he was never a coordinator. Even though Lovie couldn't figure it out, you can have a great offense without an offensive minded HC. Just mentioning this because I was thinking a guy like Mike Zimmer should be getting a shot by now. Lots of good young defensive coaches out there. Was Phil too narrow minded?

Id be fine with him, I just don't think he will get it.

Me either. Arians is a candidate for "Coach of the year." Has been successful working with Luck, Ben and Manning. How many chances do you get at a guy like that?

Is Rod Marinelli in play to be the defensive coordinator for the yet-to-be-named new head coach of the #Bears ….

Possibly. Nothing is set at all here as the decision has yet to be made on the head coach. But a source said that candidates Darrell Bevell and Marc Trestman are both at least open to the option of retaining Marinelli and perhaps some additional members of the defensive staff. It’s not known if Bruce Arians is thinking the same way and it can’t be ruled out. General manager Phil Emery was clear that he planned on letting his new head coach do what they considered was best. Some believe a clean break from the previous regime is the best move to make. Others like the idea of maintaining continuity – as best as possible – for a defense that has played at a high level. But the defense will not be the same without Lovie Smith, the man who ran the show on that side of the ball. It will be interesting to see what happens and no doubt the assistants that remain under contract to the Bears are anxious to see what shakes out.

That's some spotty talent evaluation.
:lmao:
What's so funny?
Pretty much everything you've said in this thread.

Dispute anything I've said that's not just opinion. Dope. Go troll for fat chicks.

Firing a 10-6 coach seemed like a knee-jerk reaction. Now this hiring seems like a huge mistake.

Former Bears Head Coaches

Lovie Smith (2004-2012) - Formerly a defensive coach

**** Jauron (1999-2003) - Formerly a defensive coach

Dave Wannstedt (1993-1998) - Formerly a defensive coach

Mike Ditka - (1982-1992) - Formerly a special teams coach

Neill Armstrong (1978-1981) - Formerly a defensive coach

Jack Pardee (1975-1977) - Formerly a defensive coach

Abe Gibron (1972-1974) - Formerly a defensive coach

You have to go back to Jim Dooley (hired in 1968) to find a Bears head coach who had an offensive background. It takes a special kind of guy to coach the Bears. A tough, hard-nosed leader of men serving a tough, hard-nosed, passionate fan base. It seems as though they set out to find the OPPOSITE of Lovie Smith, and Trestman was the best candidate they could find. I'm going on record as saying this will be a disaster.

Go to hell, Bears! That's it. That's the last mistake I'll ever see by this team. You're just another joke of the many in Bears history, Emery. As long as you continue your run of 1st round busts and terrible head coaches, you will fit in just fine around here. You should've waited another year and brought in Lane Kiffin, though. He's a good guy.

Did Trestman star in that?

You're absolutely right. The Bears should not have broken tradition and should have hired another Defensive minded coach so that we could continue our dominance and our Super Bowl championship trend.

While I'm not a fan of the hire, these coaches have led the Bears to 2 NFCCs and 1 Super Bowl victory, and the majority of that list were complete failures as a head coach. The combined results of those guys tells me that getting away from this mindset is not necessarily a bad thing, I just think they went about it the wrong way.

The other mindset they needed to get away from is not hiring a HC with NFL HC experience. You have to go back to Paddy Driscoll in the 50s to find a HC they hired that had done it before. And Paddy Driscoll's experience? Player/coach about 30 years before thet hired him. In that 30 year gap, between being Player/Coach, and hired by the Bears, he was never a HC at the professional level. They failed at this and miserably.

And for the record, I'm in the Hub Arkush camp of wondering why Brian Billick wasn't approached.

What does this mean for Bears players FF values? Cutler/Forte/Marshall/JefferyAt least Trestman is an offensive guy, so hopefully they get better.

Hey hey hey....Phil Emery doesn't make wrong decisions. Ask around.

It's risky only because he's been in the CFL for last 8 years, but it's better than picking up a college coach. Offensive Guru, and QB coach, well have to see. As a bears fan I would have preferred Arians but Trestman was my number #2. West coast comes to the Windy City. Upgrade Forte baby.

Does this mean you will be hanging out in some other teams offseason thread from now on? If that happens, then I see this as being a successful hire. Not sure how you can call McClellan a bust at this point. Lane Kiffin? For those that aren't use to flapgreen, I am assuming this is his attempt at sarcasm.

Phil Emery is the smartest guy in the league, probably the world. Look at how thorough his search was! Look at his damn glasses!!1!

McCoy was my #1 choice but Trestman was my second pick, so I'm pretty stoked. ESPN says he will bring in Aaron Kromer as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Curious to see what happens on defense. I can see Marinelli being the DC and I can also see making a clean break and bringing in someone new, glad it's not my call. Come on free agency/draft/2013!

This guy was called a "future NFL head coach" more than 20 years ago. It took a long time but now he has made it.

Heard that Rod Marinelli will probably be retained. Also, that Trestman offenses use the RB well. Perhaps give Forte a boost.

Trestman is an offensive guy, and will call the plays while Kromer helps game planning and coaches the offensive line.Trestman actually worked with Cutler before the NFL draft to get him ready for his Pro Day and workouts.Trestman cut his teeth as a classic West Coast offense quarterback, but to his credit he's shown a lot of scheme diversity in recent years (NC State, Montreal). One interesting tidbit is that he recruited Russell Wilson to NC State, believing Wilson could be one of the nation's best QBs in spite of his height.

Trestman was only in the CFL for the last five years, he was the NC State OC for a few years before that.

Looks like it is officialhttp://www.rotoworld.com/headlines/nfl/254186/report-bears-hire-trestman-to-replace-lovieI personally wanted Arians, but this is a risky play that can do well or blow up in their faces.
