2013 Closers (1 Viewer)

Camp gets his first shot and he gets two easy outs, then goes 2-2 on Pence and allows the first HR the Cubs have yielded all year at home. lol

I think Marmol gets the job back real soon
You're probably right, but I don't see the point. He's 30. He threaded the needle long enough now, with those walk and flyball rates.

It's shocking that he was as effective as he was, but he really shouldn't be closing games. All of the reasons have been there awhile and are just getting worse.

All he'll do is demoralize a young team when they finally muster up late lead. Marmol's not a closer. They might luck into a kid that is.

So Boggs just blew another one but Rosenthal also let up 2 runs in the 8th. Doesn't look like either of them want the job. What's the move here for closers? If someone gets this job and produces it could be great pickup since I'm guessing Motte won't be coming back this year.
I grabbed Mujica in one league, but who knows.
Fangraphs seems to think Mujica will be the guy. That was enough for me to grab him this morning.

I'm having a tough time pulling the trigger on Mujica. Rosenthal is also available in my league. I would be dropping Marmol for either one but can't decide. :kicksrock:

Tough call. As frustrating as he's been and as much crap as he gets, I still think Marmol can be an effective pitcher. And he has the kind of stuff that can close games, if he can get his head right. That said, I'm pretty pessimistic about him getting another shot this season. Sveum is babysitting this team right now and I don't know that he has the stomach to roll with Marmol again and take the heat for it if it blows up. And I can't see him getting traded either.

Tough call, but when it comes to closers, I'll take opportunity over ability, and it sounds to me like Mujica or Rosenthal will be the ones getting the chances. Flip a coin and drop Marmol.

Well, after last night Matheny indicated that Mujica might get the next save opp. Meanwhile you have to figure that Russell would need to blow atleast a couple of chances before Marmol is even considered again.

I got Mujica under the radar in my B&M league for $2. Worth a hold this week and maybe next to see what happens, gotta think Boggs is out given how bad he's been this year. You figure if Mujica works Matheny can use Rosenthal as an 8th inning guy or a bridge, seems like taking some pressure off the youngster might be best in the short-term. Like the Tigers however, Cards may soon be in the market for bullpen help.

Yeah, I opted for Mujica myself. But I try to stay aware that managers never give us the full story. Never know when there's a ploy to motivate...™ afoot.

Up 4 tonight Boggs got the 9th

Mujica was throwing the whole time though, looked like as soon as Boggs gave up a run it was Ed's show.

Valverde, re-signed a couple of weeks ago as a possible option to the closer situation in Detroit, pitched two scoreless innings today in this second appearance for the Tigers' extended spring training team.

He struck out four and did not allow a walk, according to MLB.com reporter Jason Beck, against the Canadian junior national team made up of 18-, 17- and 16-year-olds. This was the second of two scheduled outings for Valverde.

Nathan Borges, 18, a pitcher on the Canadian team, tweeted after the game: "jose valverde pitched against us today. it was the most odd thing I've ever been a part of."

The next move for Valverde is supposed to to Triple-A Toledo, at least that's what Tigers president Dave Dombrowski said on April 4 when Valverde was brought in. The date of that call-up is unknown. Valverde can opt out of his deal with Detroit if he hasn't joined the major league team by May 5.
lololololol

Well, John Axford stinks and I need to use one of my 3 add/drops for the year to replace him.

Which FA do you think has the best outlook for the rest of the year so I don't need to make any more closer changes?...

Player INN W L S BS K BBI HA ERA WHIP Rank

Reed, Addison RP CHW 6 1 0 4 0 6 3 1 0 0.667 62

Perkins, Glen RP MIN 4 1 0 2 0 3 1 2 4.5 0.75 207

Janssen, Casey RP TOR 4 0 0 3 0 6 0 3 2.25 0.75 209

Frieri, Ernesto RP LAA 5.3 0 0 2 0 10 3 4 1.688 1.313 246

Fujikawa, Kyuji RP CHC 4.3 1 0 2 1 4 1 8 12.46 2.077 505

Holland, Greg RP KC 3 0 1 2 1 5 6 5 12 3.667 1169

Boggs, Mitchell RP STL 6.3 0 1 2 2 7 6 7 11.37 2.053 1181

Frieri and Reed are probably the best options for a "rest of the season" type of move. I would say Perkins belongs there too, but you can't rule out a mid-season trade.

I'm sure he's gone in most leagues and I don't know if this is "news", but STL Dispatch reporting Mujica "may" be given an opportunity to close.

I hate to be this guy, but why the hell are all those closers free agents?
Really laid back league. We pretty much just have a draft to have an excuse to get together for a trip to AC.

Ten guys, start 5 "hitters" regardless of position, 3 SPs, 2 RPs.

Almost no add/drops after the draft except for injuries or your 3 additional you can use at any time.

I got Chapman as the 6th closer off the board because I knew no one was paying attention to the news he went back to closing.

Who would you go with out of the available guys? TIA

What the hell do I know? Local sports radio guy says we'll see Marmol back as closer by the end of the week. Was hard to tell from the context, but I think it was pure speculation and not based on anything from Sveum.

More, from Yahoo:

Marmol has delivered four straight scoreless appearances since being removed from the closer role, which has Sveum thinking about giving him another chance. "I would be lying to you if he wasn't working his way back into it," said Sveum. "He is throwing strikes and he is throwing his slider more and he's more consistent. So, yeah, he's working his way back. That was part of the deal."

Fool me twice and I won't be fooled again. Good riddance.

Henderson got the SV for the Brewers but gave up a run on two hits. The potential tying run Andres Torres hit a warning track shot for the final out.

Veras with a mostly clean inning. :hifive:

Oh...it was the 8th and they were down by 2. That should count as a Houston Save.

Marmol got the 9th in a 6-2 victory. Struck out 2, no hits or walks.

Also - Find it highly likely that Bailey is the closer for the rest of the year for Boston.

Cubs signed former closer Kevin Gregg, who had a good spring. Weirder things have happened than him getting a shot to close.

If any two pitchers ever needed to be traded for each other it's Axford and Marmol. Fresh start would help them both.

Gregg is a "proven closer" and has cool goggles but he really wasn't that good in the closer role in his prime

This is probably enough to earn him an opportunity at the Cubs role.

I figured it was the 2nd part of that sentence that qualified him for the Cubs closer role.

To be honest, Eephus made lots of good points. Not sure why he thinks Gregg doesn't deserve a shot, he basically laid the perfect case out there for it.

Are the Padres planning on getting a save opp this season? Close to dumping Street regardless of how he pitching.

Kevin Gregg was not a good reliever the past two years. Crazier things may have happened, but I would be shocked if he got a shot at the closers role. He certainly won't be on my fantasy team.
