*** 2013 Official Pittsburgh Steelers Off & ON Season Thread *** (1 Viewer)

I won't argue with that, but he's better than Dwyer. I saw that cut coming 6 months ago. When they attempted to deal him earlier in the offseason that pretty much showed he was going to have to show up and have the camp to end all camps to avoid the Turk.

And I absolutely echo the sentiment that LS-H is the guy who should be getting the most run at tailback in Bell's absence. I'm also 1000% convinced it won't happen, unfortunately. Redman is the pet of Tomlin/Kirby. He's going to get rolled out there more often than he should.

Until Bell is healthy enough to contribute, LS-H as the main ball carrier with Redman handling SY and GL duties is how I hope they roll.

I hope Felix Jones starts in week 1 and Redman gets the tough yards and goal-line carries. At least Felix has a chance to be something more than a plodder, and he's far more of a threat out of the backfield too. Neither is a great option, but I'd feel better giving Felix the chance until Bell is ready.

LSH shouldn't see the field on anything but third downs or two minute offense. He's a scat back, and I would hate to see the Steelers give him 15 carries in any game.

I'm probably in the minority with that opinion, but hey, that's alright.

Disagree that Redman is better than Dwyer, but one is on a team and one is not. Dwyer's downfall is he got in Tomlin's (supposedly nonexistent) dog house. Fumbles and tapping out last year. If he never fumbles in preseason it's a different story.

True

In my mind, Stephens-Holwing has the best vision of any back on the current roster. Fits the zone scheme best. Jones is beyond meh to me.

It won't matter. Neither he nor Jones will be given starts. It will be Redman, come hell or high Water, until Bell is available most likely.

Don't know about that. They did try to deal him earlier in the offseason. That does not shriek of "We love this guy!!" to me. He needed to blow people away at camp to avoid the chopping block, most likely, and he didn't.

But even if it is true, the tapping out/being out of shape/being owed 1.3 million/being a poor fit for the scheme and lack of any special traits as a runner were enough of a reason to cut him on their own merits to me. They could have cut Redman too, as far as I'm concerned, since I don't think he's that much of an improvement or any better of a fit for the scheme.

Id like to see more NFL carries from Bell before I decide how good his vision is, but LSH is easily the best of the rest.

When I said "on the current roster" I wasn't really including Bell. I suppose Bell still is on it, technically, but as you say....until I see more NFL carries from him I'd probably think LS-H's was better right now anyway.

But yeah, the point was his vision kicks the holy hell out of Redman's, Jones', et al.

Am in a slow moving rookie draft for a dynasty league and Markus Wheaton fell so I wound up taking him.

I took him semi-blind by his ranking and some camp chatter but pulled the trigger because I used to own Emmanuel Sanders and from experience I know that Sanders is not the most durable guy and quite frankly I just don't think he has the skills as a #2 NFL WR.

I am confident that Wheaton will get a shot but I don't know what to expect.

What do the Steeler faithful think of Markus Wheaton? What have you seen and does has the skills to be a legitimate #2?

Thanks

Practice Squad: TBD

My guess for practice squad moves

Justin Brown
Chris Hubbard
Joe Long
Brian Arnfelt
Alan Baxter
Terence Garvin
Terry Hawthorne
Alameda Ta'amu

But, Spaeth might be moved to IR/designated which opens up a spot and Long gets moved to the 53 freeing up a spot on PS. Not sure who would be added then but I'll guess Ventrone or Alexander.

Anyone think the Steelers could/should or will go after Danny Watkins? Not sure they need another guard really but he might be a good backup to stash.

Sonova...this Cody Wallace better be good. Malecki waived, Wallace signed from TB.

Gotta suck for Malecki. "I made the 53!" Day later: turn in your playbook.

Improving our ST today.

Bob Labriola ‏@BobLabriola 3m

The @Steelers also claimed CB Antwon Blake off waivers from Jax. To make room for him, Isaiah Green was waived.
No clue who Blake is, but Green was probably the biggest head scratcher to make the 53 man roster to me so works for me.
I know, thought they'd give someone else a shot at that last DB spot. What I read about Blake is 1) he's really fast. clocked an unofficial sub 4.2 40 (4.3 official) at his pro day. 2) is a good gunner on ST and led the Jags in ST tackles.

As far as Mesko, definitely an upgrade.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were back on the practice field Monday as they began preparing to play the Tennessee Titans Sunday in their 2013 season opener at Heinz Field. Rookie linebacker Jarvis Jones, who suffered a sprained chest in the third preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, was able to practice with the team, and he talked to the media afterwards.

“I pretty much did everything today,” said Jones. “It was a great feeling to get back out there and practice with the guys, go through the routine and prepare for Sunday.

“Today was a day we go through a lot of the early calls against other teams, get back into it. For me it was going out there and getting a feel for it. I was off for a week and I was finding out where I am.”

The Steelers didn't practice in pads Monday, so Jones said that he didn't need to take any extra precautions in order to protect his chest, and that he just went with the flow of things.

"Obviously, the offensive line was punching and doing their thing," Jones said. "I went out there and had a good practice and just tried to finish."

Jones is expected to be ready to play Sunday, but whether or not he will start at right outside linebacker is still unknown. Head coach Mike Tomlin admitted last week that the Georgia product was in the running to do just that, but that it all now depends on how fast he recovers from his injury.

Whether or not Jones starts is really insignificant at this point as it is obvious he will begin rotating in on defense sooner rather than later. During the preseason, the Steelers implemented a rotation consisting of Jones, Jason Worilds and LaMarr Woodley, so we could see that same rotation used as early as Sunday.

Wexell keeps tweeting that the rotation at OLB is over. Not sure what that is supposed to imply. Jones starting? Jones will only spell a tired starter?

Apparently this is the answer. Kind of how I thought it would be before training camp started.

I heard that the Steelers are going to put Spaeth on the IR-Deignated list later today. I am thinking this is a mistake and that Spaeth should be on the regular IR. It would really suck to have a starter go down in the first week of the season with an injury requiring 8 weeks recovery time and not being able to use the IR-Designated tag.

So where are steelers fans at with this team?

extremely optimistic?

cautiously optimistic?

unsure?

concerned but keeping positive?

very concerned?

loading the lifeboats?

Judging from local sports talk most Steelers fans seem to be "very concerned" to "loading the lifeboats".

I am cautiously optimistic -- all depends on how bad the injury bug hits the team cause there is not a lot of depth.

I don't now the rule--is it possible to move Spaeth from the IRD to the IR later and free up the spot for somebody more important who gets hurt? If not, there's no way I'd risk using up the spot for Spaeth.

agree. there's no one they would move up or sign that would make the 45 gameday active list anyway

Steeler wins this year = (# of games Roethlisberger starts * .625 + # of games Roethlisberger misses * .4375)

To me this all depends on the OL. If they stay healthy and develop as a unit then I think the team will be in the playoffs and contend for the division title.

03 September 2013 Jarvis Jones Listed As Co-Starter On Steelers First Regular Season Depth Charthe first Pittsburgh Steelers depth chart of the 2013 regular season is now out and it shows Jason Worilds and rookie Jarvis Jones listed as the co-starters at the right outside linebacker position.

On Monday, Jones only received one rep with the starters during practice, according to Jim Wexell of Steel City Insider, who also quoted fellow outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley as saying that we shouldn't read too much into the three man rotation used by the first-team defense during the preseason.

Being as Jones is listed as a co-starter, we will just have to wait and see how he is used in the Sunday season opener against the Tennessee Titans. Head coach Mike Tomlin will hold his first press conference of the season on Tuesday, so there is a chance he might be asked about his initially plans for Jones. Whether or not he will be forthcoming with his answer is a different story.
03 September 2013 Mike Tomlin Says Jarvis Jones Will Play On Defense Against The TitansPittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin let it be known Tuesday during his press conference that rookie outside linebacker Jarvis Jones will indeed play some on defense Sunday in the season opener against the Tennessee Titans.

"Jones is going to play," Tomlin said when asked if he would use a three man rotation at outside linebacker line was used during the preseason.

Jones practiced on Monday according to Tomlin and is feeling good after suffering a sprained chest in the third preseason game. Despite his readiness, Tomlin did say that Jason Worilds would start at right outside linebacker.

It is still unclear just how much playing time Jones will see on defense Sunday, but you can tell that Tomlin intends on working him in nonetheless.

Agreed. I like Paulson more than Spaeth anyway and Heath should be back sooner rather than later.

Paulson is a good receiving TE but is not good at blocking, and he's a bit undersized. Steelers TE has to be able to block.

According to Ed at PP-G:

...

• Spaeth, who had surgery on his foot to repair a Lisfranc injury, can begin practicing six weeks from now if he's ready. He can come off injured reserve as soon as eight weeks from now. Once he starts practicing, the Steelers will have 21 days to decide whether to add him to their 53-man roster or keep him on injured reserve.

I knew that much. The question is, does putting Spaeth on the IR-return list kill that option for any future injuries? In other words, if someone like Troy gets an injury that will keep him out for 7 or 8 weeks, can they move Spaeth to the IR and put Troy on the IR-return list or are they forced to carry him on the active roster because they already used up the one IR-return option they're allowed?
