*2014-15 Hot Stove Thread: The Padres won it I guess (1 Viewer)

They have to field a competitive squad to remain relevant in the Bay Area.
This is a pretty silly post. The die have been cast in terms of relevance ever since Walter Haas decided to be neighborly and Magowan and Co. did not respond in kind. The A's could trade Crisp for Mike Trout or they could trade him for Ben Revere, it doesn't alter the fact that one team has what's considered a nice stadium, and the other most certainly does not.
Ridiculous post

fangraphs updated projections have Red Sox as best team in baseball by two wins. also has them as having the 6th best rotation.

Maeda hasn't been posted yet.

The circumstances are much different but Yoan Moncada is in a similar state of limbo

I don't see this move, especially for a NL team. He's coming off two straight years of sub-.700 OPS, can't play 3B anymore and doesn't have great platoon splits to PH against a LHP.

Fun guy to watch though.
They've been saying for years that they plan to add a vet power bat to the bench, but it never seems to happen. He's basically taking Descalso's roster spot for $2 mil, so... meh.

Those guys would make great Twins.

Not really a fan of what they have done so far. Tomas should be good, but their trades seem a bit puzzling.
They are reducing salary on players and trying to add more players - De La Rosa and Webster who will be under team control for longer periods of time and building the whole organization up.

Seem familiar? LaRussa obviously worked closely with Billy Beane and Stewart also was in that organization.

For the Diamondbacks this is clearly a year to rebuild and get going in the right direction - Oakland? still a chance Beane adds a few key players before the season starts

I get the plan, i just doubt their player selection. Ray over Greene?

Beane was a scout and assistant while LaRussa was in Oakland. The A's were a high payroll club when Walter Haas owned the club and LaRussa managed it. The Cardinals built from within but always had funds available to supplement that talent with veterans.

The Diamondbacks had a lot of cost controlled talent a few years ago but they traded most of it away in search of grittiness. That got them 2 playoff wins in 2011 and 98 regular season losses in 2014. They have their work cut out for them in a division with two big spenders at the top.

Kang to be posted Monday. Heyman appears to have speculated that oak, sf, and nym were interested, on just an assumption, i think? But then it got repeated in a bunch of places. Maybe everyone's just playing it close to the vest.

Those projections are a real steamer.

Melky's been north of a three WAR three of the last four season

Viciedo's total WAR over that time is zero.

Melky to the White Sox. Wtf?
3/45. According to steamer projections it's a 1 win upgrade over Vicideo, who looks like he's about to be shipped.
not sure how thats possible. Melky is a much better player than viciedo offensively and defensively
Last year with Fangraphs, Melky was 2.7 and Viciedo was -.7, while BR Melky was 3.1 and Viciedo was -.9 ... So Melky is a significant upgrade of 3+ WAR it looks like.

Thanks for looking this info up. No idea where we'd be without the likes of you
