Beltran RF

That's not awful. Just really don't have any good middle of the order guys unless McCann bounces back or one of Ellsbury/Gardner wants to hit for more power.
its the same #### lineup they had last year
Prado is a lot better than Roberts at 2B. Didi hits like Jeter did last year (bad) but isn't a trainwreck on D. Headley is better than Yangervis at 3B. They are effectively swapping Ichiro in RF for Beltran's glove and A-Rod's bat. Not sure if that's a positive or not.

Definitely not a championship, but they did win 84 games last year and they seem a little better (Granted, it was with a Pythagorean record of 77 wins, so who knows?)
The lineup has some question marks with age and injury but that's kind of a Yankees tradition now. But they'll score runs on the days that everybody shows up.

The big problem is the rotation. CC, Tanaka, Pineda, Capuano and Phelps aren't going to get it done. I have to think they'll be in on either Scherzer or Shields.
When they announced the Capuano signing a source said "definitely not" about Scherzer.

So I expect the press conference tomorrow.

Rays traded Matt Joyce and his perpetually mediocre and sucky play to the Angels. Jaspen or Jensen or some guy in return. #analysis
He's a pretty good hitter, probably was their third best. Their offense took a decent hit with this.
He's a 1.5-2 WAR player. Extremely replaceable.
Those kinds of players have been getting $10M this off-season
He is a better hitter than Alex Rios and he just signed an 11 mill one year deal.

Relievers have been getting paid too. They didn't trade him for a single-A player. And they have a logjam in the OF.

Brandon Morrow signs with the Padres for 1/$2.5M with a chance at an additional $6M in incentives.

Brett Anderson's agent scoffs.
Love this signing. Now sign Josh Johnson to a similar deal and make the Wisler for Justin Upton swap AJ.
Seems like it's gonna take more than Wisler, no? Even then, does a trade for upton make sense only if you expect to seriously contend in 2015?

I dont think Kemp is what you think he is, unfortunately. If Friedman's willing to trade in the division...

Michael Morse to Miami for 2/$8M presumably to play 1B in tandem with Garrett Jones. This ought to kill off the Pedro Alvarez rumors.

Morse will always be alright in my book. He's a maddening player to watch at the plate and especially in the field. But you can't fault the big lug for lack of effort or enthusiasm. He had some big hits for the Giants during their hot start and they ended up needing every bit of that cushion.

He'll be 33 by opening day and has never been able to stay healthy. I hope 1B will be easier on his body and he'll be able to mash for 500 PAs or so.

The mystery of the Giants' off-season continues.
2/$16M for Morse. Who's the dummy now?

@TBTimes_Rays: Per @JimBowden_ESPN, those #Rays talks with #Padres include top C prospect Austin Hedges

What's the word on him?

Hit a (Jose) Molinaesque .225/.268/.321 in AA.
Ya I looked that up after I posted. Excitement: gone
He better be able to frame pitches while the ball is still in the pitcher's hand
Lol

I saw where baseball America had him as a top-30 prospect. Yet he's never hit at all. That makes no sense at all.

Because he's considered an "elite" defensive prospect.

Hedges is an absolute defensive stud. Some say he could have caught MLB pitching out of HS. Had a strong commit to UCLA but Padres gave him a big bonus and signed him.

Love To get Myers, but will be VERY disappointed if Hedges is the price. Peep the pop time. http://vimeo.com/62974201

Hedges is still 22, he could spend another half year at AA, and then a year and a half at AAA, and still hit the majors with lots of prime/knee cartilage left.

Even if whatever organization he is with can get his bat to replacement catcher level, he'll be a solid major leaguer. I dont think failing at AA at college senior age is a death knell, necessarily.

Why are the Rays so interested in getting rid of Myers? Young, cheap, popular player. I know he regressed in 2014 but it's like they're intentionally selling low.

He's that good defensively, and his bat will come.

IF they can get more from the Padres than they think Myers is worth, WHY wouldn't they try and improve their team?

@TBTimes_Rays: As @Ken_Rosenthal + @JeffPassan suggested, also hearing Hedges + Souza are key pieces of return if it turns out to be #Rays-#Padres-#Nats

Topkin saying it's about done.

I don't see how you can look at Hedges stat lines and see a sure thing. Maybe defensively.

Although, Myers certainly isn't one either.

ESPN's update on trade does NOT include Hedges at all and I doubt the Padres would trade him

Matt Kemp - OF - Dodgers

Bleacher Report's Will Carroll hears that "rumors....are starting to get louder" about a possible failed physical by OF Matt Kemp.

Kemp was all set to be traded to the Padres for Yasmani Grandal, Joe Wieland and Zach Eflin pending a physical. It's important to note that nothing is official, but the silence on the situation is curious. Kemp has suffered numerous over the course of his career. When he's healthy, he's been an elite bat.

TGUNZ strikes again?

The #Mariners announce they have acquired OF Justin Ruggiano from the #Cubs for minor league relief pitcher Matt Brazis.

ETA: Aside from Brazis, the deal clears $2.5 to $3M in salary for Cubs, and also opens up 40-man spot, possibly for Jason Motte.

Hedges' bat isn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be. So he struggled as a 21 yr old in a hitters park in Double A while catching 120 games in TX heat, when he should have been a senior in college. His body hasn't filled out yet, and he makes contact.

Even if he's a .240ish, 10-12 HR guy batting 7th in the lineup, he'll be an All Star caliber catcher who puts up big WAR numbers due to his elite defense.

Kemp failing his physical would be an enormous win for Preller.
Nope. You guys are putting far too much weight into defensive metrics. The idea that the Padres would be better off w/o a bat like Kemp (17 Hrs in the 2nd half of 2014) while holding on to their backup catcher who has already torn his ACL once is beyond silly.

It's peculiar that you mention grandal's injury, yet dont mention kemp's dozens of injuries. Even as he may or may not have failed a physical. Too busy cherry picking stats, i guess.

How many wars do you think he'll be worth next year?

Are any of Kemp's injuries as serious as a catcher tearing an ACL?

Kemp certainly carries risk. Some of that risk is mitigated by the contract (5/$75M is a bargain for a bat of Kemp's caliber).

I'd guess 3.5-4 WAR for Kemp next year, assuming he's healthy. Bat should grade out around there, and I think he'll likely be anywhere from replacement level in LF to -1.0 defensively.

I'm not nearly as sold on defensive metrics as I am offensive metrics. And that's not due to Kemp; I just think that we have a way to go before those metrics accurately reflect true defensive value.
