*2014-15 Hot Stove Thread: The Padres won it I guess (2 Viewers)

Yea, I'm not sure about the complaining on the Miley deal. He's not an ace, obviously, but the last three years his xfip of 3.75, 3.77, 3.50, with 200 IP.

That is pretty valuable.
Alot of reaction seems to be based on Red Sox fans viewing De La Rosa as the next Pedro or something but that's what you get when Remy and stuff compare them during games. I'm warming up to the deal after a kneejerk reaction as long as the 3rd prospect isn't anything big.
Miley isn't that good, but there's a good chance the other guys in the deal aren't either.

According to industry sources, Phillies will end up with pitchers Zach Eflin, as others have suggested, and lefty Tom Windle for Rollins

love Love LOVE the Kemp deal, though I think Grandal will have a breakthrough year offensively.

Wieland and Eflin were not top 10 prospects, so AJ Preller has plenty of ammo left if he wants to make the JUpton push.

DO IT AJ!

no concerns about Kemp's defense at Petco?

Mild concerns, but I think he'll grade out as replacement level defensively now that he's exclusively playing corner OF. I think his shortcomings were exaggerated somewhat due to his still playing CF part time up in LA.

He's never had great instincts defensively, but he's so athletic and has a good arm that when healthy it would surprise me if his metrics don't significantly improve this year.

And I can't tell you how offensively starved this fan base is for a premier bat in the middle of the lineup. Zero threat and zero excitement every night when Black continually has to have guys who should be hitting 6th or 7th batting 3rd and cleanup.

Dee Gordon to FLA for SP Heaney
This would be a pretty solid move for LA, but it's not done as far as I can see.

Rollins seems like a pretty good stopgap for LA, I am assuming the pitchers LA's reportedly giving up will be org. guys or longshot lottery tickets.
I figured as much too, but Zach Eflin (33rd overall pick in 2012) and Tom Windle (2nd round pick in 2013) are a pretty nice return.

Kemp is still perceived as a star, particularly in Southern California. So there may be some benefit at the gate for a franchise that's lacked marquee players since Gonzalez left.

He's 30 now and will never equal his 2011 season. If 2014 performance is his new level, then what's effectively a 5/$75M deal isn't bad in this market. I'd be more concerned about him turning into Carlos Quentin in his 30s though.

His 2nd half was ridiculous - wasn't his OPS like 2nd overall in the majors, or at least in the NL?

Playing a less demanding position and not running anymore should help. As a Kemp owner in dynasty since his minor league days, I know he'll never be the fantasy stud he was when he was running, but I still think there is elite production in that bat. The power is still there - 66 XBH's last year and he's never gotten the credit I though he deserved for being an all around hitter, as he's almost a .300 career hitter.

30 isn't that old. Still lots of life left in that body, IMO.

Ankle, shoulder and hamstrings permitting

Eephus is right in that Kemp's name is a bonus, as this town needs a name in the worst way. I just think the idea that 5/$75 for a guy like Kemp "isn't bad in this market" is a bit of a slight. I think it's outstanding, considering what Hanley and Pablo and Tomas signed for.

not sure about that he was a pretty good starting pitcher in college
Maybe so, but the first challenge for Rule 5 pickup is to find a role that will keep him on the big league roster all season. I think Gilmartin and the Mets would be happy with him being Josh Edgin this year.
True ..... unless they can find a cheap deal for him and send him to AAA to start

Masterson/Buchholz/Miley/Porcello/Kelly is like a fantasy team where the owner spent 90% of the auction budget of bats.

It is only December, Miley and Porcello are good additions that didn't cost the Red Sox any of their top prospects. I doubt that is their starting rotation in the Spring but a couple days ago they needed 3 starters and now they only need to add one more SP. Granted, whoever they add needs to be at least on par with Porcello but if they do that I think they are in good shape giving their offense.

I'd think you'd want the final SP to be quite a bit better than Porcello.
