*2014-15 Hot Stove Thread: The Padres won it I guess (4 Viewers)

Are "cheap [any category]" ever really a good idea? You solve one problem, but you're making everything else worse.
Pair them together with a player who is great in the categories they are deficient in ...

Who is this player?

24 HR, 75 R, 72 RBI, 24 SB, 270+ BA

Pretty useful in roto
Are you platooning these two players? Or are they both regular starters? There's a big difference between getting those stats (any stats) out of just one guy, and getting them combined from two guys.
No YOU said the cheap category guy isn't worthwhile

BUT if you pair your first round Giancarlo Stanton with a late pick on Rajai Davis you get THAT player times two

so you are getting twice those stats from the two guys

I am totally not following.

Two guys, one slot

No just saying that the cheap speed guy can complement the slugger guy

So Stanton + Rajai Davis is 48 HR, 149 R, 144 RBI, 48 SB and 270ish BAvg

two outfielders

He also said "modern stats" and not "advanced stats". I would say he is correct and OPS falls in the former category. I don't remember OPS being mentioned too often 25 years ago.

Double oy!
Aren't you the guy who preferred Andy Pettite to James Shields? The audacity! Surprised the saber nerds haven't sliced you yet
You seem upset with the forum. Maybe if we knew you better we'd understand you
You would be mistaken. This is priceless stuff here and I only hope it continues. There are a ton of legitimate baseball outlets for quality analysis. The geekdom on this forum is gold tho.

I'd like to check out these outlets. Mind sharing them? Also, I'll take a link to the Twitter account if you're looking for followers. I'm here to learn.

Buddy who throws bp for the white sox flew out yesterday for early spring training.

Baseball is right around the corner

Won't catch any spring training games in person this year, but I recommend the experience. Good way to sit close to the action, weather is reliable, small chance a fly ball encroaches on pitchers jogging the warning track in the late innings, and everyone is tied for first place.

And on the Arizona side, the Diamondbacks' facility is right by a really nice card room if you want to get some Hold'Em in before or after the game.

Eric Young Jr. signs with the Braves. He has to beat out Zoilo Almonte and Kelly Johnson to be a source of cheap SB this year.
Random Eric Young Sr. story.

2004, I'm out at the park way too early, sitting 3B side, way up the line, near the foul pole. A few Ranger players are playing catch in the outfield including Young. There are more players on the field than people in the stands.

Two kids are leaning over the railing yelling at the top of their lungs, "NUMBER SEVEN. HEY NUMBER SEVEN." Young refuses to turn around and acknowledge in any way. This goes on for a solid 15 mins. The kids just continue to scream, going hoarse.

Finally I bend down and tell one of the kids, "Call him EY, not number seven."

The kid yells out a single "HEY EY!!" Young immediately turns to him and tosses him a ball, then goes back to playing catch.

I'm just assumed that Young couldn't remember his jersey number.

Would Fausto pitch in AAA? I assume.

Speaking of, if you're a vet and you're willing to accept some AAA time and hope/wait for injury failure do you go with the easiest AAA league on pitchers, location or best opportunity for call up? I'm thinking location of AAA squad...
I think the opportunity to break camp with the big club would take priority. I don't know the details of Hernandez' deal but a lot of veteran NRI contracts have a player option to opt-out after spring training. If he gets in shape and shows good stuff in exhibitions, he could upgrade to a better situation in a couple of months. Or he could continue to suck.
I think that's the logical answer, sure. ;)
Interesting article on the subject by former LOOGY C.J. Nitkowski

Good stuff. I like CJ. He's on xm radio and active on the twitts.

A's sign Barry Zito to minor league deal.

If Zito arrives for spring training via hot tub time machine from 2002, this move should help the A's a lot.
It's a nice thing to do, given his years with Oakland. But he has Moyer-esque fb velocity without Moyer-esque control.
If his curve is still filthy, there are worse LOOGY options. But yeah, this just seems like a favor for an old friend.

His extended warmup routine makes him impractical as a reliever. Zeet's only shot is as a starter. The back end of the Oaklands' rotation is unproven at best. If Zito looks good in Arizona, he has a legitimate chance of coming north with the club.

MLB Network had an intense show about the division battle between Atlanta and San Francisco in the last week of the 1993 season. The Giants went home after winning 103 games, although they really crapped the bed on the last day of the year. Eric Dickerson and Vince Ferragamo had big days for the Rams.

Also the problem of the last time he pitched, his 133 IP in 2013, resulted in a 938 OPS against LHB, as opposed to a 857 OPS against RHB.

And for his career, he shows absolutely zero platoon split anyway.

If Zito looks good in Arizona,
Yeah, see, this is going to be the big hang-up. Barring some sort of fluky "Rookie of the Year" type injury.
He's still a longshot but so are Graveman, Nolin and Bassit
Yes, but they are young and have upside and don't have BP fastballs. You're just being silly.
Graveman has 45 IP above A ball. I think he'll be wherever the A's AAA club is this year.

I have my doubts about Nolin and Bassitt ever being successful big league starters but one needs to bridge the gap until Griffin and Parker return.

Or Hahn. Certainly one of them can be decent for two months.

So what's this chatter about miggy Cabrera and a ct scan?
Follow-up exam to clear him?

Olivera's supposedly has five suitors who are making bids that are north of $70mm. Gammons cited some guy who I've never heard of that said the Dodgers wanted to move Uribe off 3B and put Olivera there, which seems curious.
