Why do baseball writers have a hard time wrapping their mind around Scherzer's contract? It's basically 7/190. Lester got 6/155.

Scherzer was the premier FA. He got a bit more per year then Lester and an extra year. Yes that is more. But enough that everyone likes the Lester deal while calling the Scherzer deal an albatross?

15 years ago, Mike Hampton got 8/121.

All this talk of the horror of Scherzer getting 15million/year in 2026 is mind-numbing. Rubes.
whos eveyone? The guy is a stud and deserves everything he got
Probably those espousing the historical numbers of pitchers on the wrong side of 30.

So the only thing between Beachy and the fifth starter role is Brett Anderson.

Anyone know when his second TJ was? March last year?
along with Wieland and Bolsinger and he is not expected to be able to pitch until mid-season

Wieland hasn't pitched 100 innings in the last three years combined and Bolsinger has been somewhere between bad and mediocre at each level. Non factors until proven otherwise.I have five dl spots in one of my leagues, Beachy will get one of them if he makes it to the end of my vet draft.

From the MLB site . . .

Cuban top infield prospect Yoan Moncada has agreed to a record-setting bonus with the Red Sox, according to an industry source.

The agreement is pending a physical. The club has not confirmed the deal, which is believed to be in the $30 million range.
The infielder's deal puts the 19-year-old in line to smash the $8.27 million bonus record for an international amateur under the current signing guidelines, which was given to right-hander Yoan Lopez by the D-backs in January.

It is believed Moncada considered offers from five teams before choosing Boston. He worked out privately for the Brewers, Cubs, D-backs, Dodgers, Giants, Padres, Rangers, Rays, Tigers and Yankees during the past six weeks, according to industry sources.

Because he is not yet 23 years old and did not play in a Cuban professional league for at least five seasons, Moncada is subject to Major League Baseball's international signing guidelines, under which each team is allotted $700,000 and an additional bonus pool based on the team's record the previous year to be used during the international signing period. The current period started July 2 and ends on June 15.

According to those guidelines, clubs are penalized during the upcoming 2015-16 signing period if they exceed their bonus pools by certain amounts. The Red Sox had already exceeded their bonus pool before this signing and been given the maximum penalty. It's a severe measure that includes a 100-percent tax on their pool overage and prohibits them from signing any pool-eligible player for more than $300,000 during the next two signing periods. Including the penalty for exceeding their bonus pool, Moncada's deal will cost the Red Sox approximately $60 million -- the bonus plus the penalty.

The Red Sox have until July 15 to pay the overage tax and up to three years to pay Moncada's bonus.

It's been quite a journey for Moncada.

The teenager -- who plays second base, shortstop and third base -- starred for Cuba's top team of 15- and 16-year-olds, and he made a name for himself at the U-16 IBAF World Baseball Championships in Mexico.

He made his debut for Cienfuegos in Cuba's Serie Nacional at age 17 and hit .277 during parts of two seasons. He played alongside White Sox slugger Jose Abreu and Dodgers infielder Erisbel Arruebarrena. Moncada was also teammates with Abreu, Arruebarrena and other notable players like Yulieski Gourriel, Alfredo Despaigne and Jose Miguel Fernandez on Cuba's national team during the 2013 World Port Tournament in the Netherlands. Raisel Iglesias, who signed a seven-year, $27 million deal with the Reds last June, was also one of Moncada's teammates.

Moncada was on Cuba's preliminary roster for the 2017 World Baseball Classic. His story is unique. While many Cuban players are known to leave the island in late-night escapes or defect from the national team during an international tournament, the 6-foot, 210-pound Moncada was granted his release from the Cienfuegos team last year and was later cleared by Cuba's National Baseball Commission. He was granted a visa and a passport by the Cuban government, and he left on an airplane to an unidentified Central American country last summer, where he trained for months before joining agent David Hastings in the St. Petersburg, Fla., area late last year.

Moncada's first showcase for all Major League teams was held Nov. 12 in Guatemala. The private showcases began a few weeks later.

After months of waiting, the infielder became available as as a free agent on Feb. 3 after MLB met with the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) for clarification regarding new guidelines for a general license for an unblocked Cuban national.

MLB now requires a sworn statement that says a Cuban player is in compliance with Section 515.05 of Cuban Assets Control Regulations in order to sign with a Major League team. It had been MLB's policy to require a specific license for unblocking from OFAC before it allowed a Cuban national to enter into an agreement with a team.

Moncada met the new general license requirements and will be the first to sign under the new guidelines.

Reported the Yankees offered 25-27M... Seems like they had a much bigger need than the Sox for a 2B/3B prospect of his caliber. Also seems odd for the Yankees to penny pinch over what amounts to like 10-13Mish dollars overall.

Pedroia/Sandoval signed to long-term contracts. I guess it'll be a potentially good problem to have? Moncada will start in A ball, I assume.
Can never have too much talent plus who is to say where Panda will be playing in 2 years or so? Napoli isn't signed long term, Papi is 38 and won't play forever. In two years it might be smart to move Panda or Hanley to a DH or 1B role opening up positions.

Anybody else think the Cuban/international players should be forced to go through the draft process just like everyone else?

Seems this would really help out the smaller clubs

So like most keeper leagues, I'm in a league where we draft a guy and can wait out the year to see how he does, and prior to the following draft we have to decide whether to toss him back into the draft or whether to keep him. The wrinkle is that we can sign him long-term (anywhere from 1-5 years). So if we expect Moncada to be a regular player by 2016, this is a no-brainer. But if he's not getting a call-up until 2017 sometime, I'd have to draft him and use up a roster spot all this year, then sign him long-term prior to next year and tie up a roster spot all year in 2016, and then finally get production outta him in '17.

So long story short, when would y'all guess is his ETA?

The Sox' offseason moves haven't been a ringing endorsement of the future of Garin Cecchini in the organization.

I'll take September 2016 in the pool.

He's 19 and hasn't played organized baseball in over a year. He could conceivably advance through three MiLB levels this year and be in the conversation this time next year. Or he could struggle.

I hold him in a dynasty league and am taking the long view. I think Boston is a good situation for him. I'm glad the red tape has finally been cleared and we can see what he's got.

Encarnacion will be Jays primary 1B not DH as was expected. Smoak/Valencia/Navarro DH (plus Reyes, Bau, Martin etc for rest days).

Likely not too fantasy relevant but hurts Smoak's rebound opportunity.

Law says he's already too big for SS, and that he's likely going to end up at 3B or LF/RF. Man it's hard to see Sandoval holding down 1B or DH for a team as rich as Boston in two years, given that his bat's been decent-not-great by 3B standards over the last couple years.

Stud bats are at a premium and Boston can afford to pay said premiums, so it makes sense. They do have quite a peculiar collection of pieces ATM.

MLB is creating a problem in the American born circles. They'll pay for it at the bargaining table if they dont address it soon. I know Smyly is just one player but his Tweet probably summarizes more than a few players opinions.

Doyers sign Dustin McGowan, son of Giants owner Peter McGowan.
Pure BS - why do you post crap like this? The Giants owner is Peter Magowan and to the best of my knowledge he and his wife don't have any children
Peter Magowan has grandchildren. I had a nice chat with him when my son and his grandson were playing U8 soccer.
Sorry I stand corrected on That point - two bios had no children listed but the BS part is correct

So you're saying your post about his having no children was pure BS as well?

Former catcher Darren Daulton's brother, Dalton Hilliard signs on with UCLA as running backs coach and buys season tickets to Dodgers games. Plans on showing up for first pitch.

I'm starting to doubt the accuracy of some of the posts in here. I'll update when I get finished fact-checking.

Correction: Peter Macgowan and I didn't talk at a kid soccer game. The conversation actually took place in a helicopter over Iraq.
