*2014-15 Hot Stove Thread: The Padres won it I guess (1 Viewer)

SI had an article about the spring training of 1995 with the replacement players. There were guys who didn't register on the radar gun because their velocity was so low. In three exhibition games at Coors Field not a single homerun was hit.

I had forgotten about Kevin Millar. It makes a little bit more sense now to see how hard he tries to be liked. He probably had to be extra-likeable to wash away the scab stink.

Sparky Anderson's refusal to manage the replacements was a menschy move

some Yankee scab broke a chair in the locker room. Thats all i remember
 
Juan Pierre, the speedy doppelganger of Hollywood producer Jon Peters , announced his retirement from baseball today. This came as a complete shock to a man from Romania who has been in a coma since the summer of 2013.

Pierre was a factor in fantasy baseball for years and sparked a lot of debate about the value of SB and empty AVG at a deep position. He always seemed like a nice guy and I've read a number of stories over the years about ex-teammates who said how much they enjoyed playing with Pierre.

He leaves the game with 614 SBs which is good enough for 18th on the all-time list just ahead of Dummy Hoy. Ichiro is now the active SB leader with 487.

Guy I knew from high school was drafted in like the 30th round by the Rockies and played minor league ball with Pierre. Became really great friends, and said through all the years, Pierre stayed the same great guy, never let money or anything change him. Solid career for Pierre, almost always had him on my teams early in his career.

Fractured foot, they're saying 3 weeks and opening day could be in jeopardy. Really wanna be extra cautious so that he doesn't rush back and start overcompensating for the pain in other ways and then mess up his arm. Chien-Ming Wang was obviously never close to Sale's level, but I remember he was never the same after he broke his foot and threw his whole motion out of whack

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Chicago White Sox ace Chris Sale suffered a foot injury in an accident at his home and will miss at least three weeks of preparation time for the regular season.

The White Sox announced the injury in a release Saturday, saying that Sale suffered an avulsion fracture to the lateral side of his right foot Friday at his spring training residence in Arizona.

I was with some GB's up in Seattle and we were going to go to the game at the Kingdome that eventually got PPD because of the falling roof tiles. On the way home we saw Griffey in a Ferrari, I think he went past us at around 105 mph.

Long forgotten is the fact that the scabs couldn't be put in any video games as he could not be a member of the MLBPA. I only think him and one other made it to the Majors. Pete Rose's son was also a scab.
 
There were quite a few replacement players that made it to the majors. Millar's case had to do with being a world series winner and not being able to have his likeness on commemorative merchandise.

 
Pete Rose's kid used to play for the Joliet Jackhmmers. He was fat and awful but they had $1 hot dogs and $1 beer night.

 
Rick Reed was a scab player too. I remember getting World Series baseball for PS2 and had to edit a few random players with fake names to turn them into Millar, Reed, etc.

Similar but it was a drain IIRC.

It was also the World Series instead of the first week of spring training and Mantle was a Hall of Famer.

It's interesting if you're a big fan of the movie. There isn't much other than the baseball diamond in the cornfield and a gift shop. Didn't charge for showing up and walking around the grounds. We were the only ones there on a random weekday. Got to hit a couple balls off a tee at home plate. Don't know if they still let visitors do that, or if it's just a kid thing they let us do because no one else was there.

During some summer weekends, the farm stages "Ghost Days" where guys dress up as the Black Sox and other old-time baseball players and walk through the corn and find the Field Of Dreams.

If you're into iconic locations from 1980s sports movies, the old Hickory Huskers gym from "Hoosiers" is preserved and open for tours. They let you shoot a couple baskets at the finish, too.
