For the old guys out there, the Elvis Costello solo tour is a can't miss show if it comes your way. His voice is still very strong, great guitar work, telling stories as he works through his massive body of music with just himself, a few guitars and a keyboard on stage.

setlist from last night

I must admit that he has aged much better than David Lee Roth.

Newport Folk Fest next weekend.

pretty excited. Talking my kids too.
Make sure to catch Hurray for the Riff Raff
oh ya? I went through everyone I didn't know during the lineup rollout. I have a few of there songs on a Newport playlist, but they didn't really jump out.

My Must Sees:

Reignwolf

Ages and Ages

J. Roddy Walston

Sun Kill Moon (though this is ruined bc of the timing - against Band of Horses - Kids must see)
Reignwolf is a fun live show. Definitely worth checking out.

Just won tix to a Billy Joel show at the Washington Nationals park in a couple weeks from my wife's company. Not sure where they are, but I'll take free tickets to just about anything.

I saw a couple people mention his shows earlier; has anyone else seen him recently? How about at a ballpark?

I'm an old guy - but my ears would love the feedback from the sounds of

Bob Mould

Thurston Moore

Social D puts on a great show. Mike Ness is a legend. Not sure how well their stuff comes across at a festival (presumably daytime slot) compared to a smaller enclosed venue though.

Yes, that's the place to be! Went to his show in Chicago @ The Double Door a few months ago and got right up front. The dude knows how to work a room. Best $15 I've spent on a show in a while.

TV on the Radio and Twin Shadow tomorrow night.

I love TVOTR and have seen them a few times but not for a 3-4 years. I like both the TS records but have never seen him live. Should be a good show.

Update from my wife, we got section 3, row 31 on the field. Sweet. Oh and parking was included. She is never allowed to switch companies until retirement.

Timberlake tonight for my wife's birthday. Not a fan but excited because she is.

Already blasted on champagne doesn't hurt either.

Attended:

Har Mar Superstar - fantastic to finally see him. Will never miss a show again.

Caroline Smith - I like her newest album. I need some music to share with my spouse.

Arctic Monkeys - Lots of swagger. I would have liked a little more intensity.

Queens of the Stone Age - killer show. Hot and sweaty rock and roll.

Rodriguez - fun to see him give life to the music from the documentary.

HAIM - rocked a lot more guitar than I expected. Irresistible chemistry.

Blood Red Shoes - I really dig this pair a lot. UK duo on a club tour - highly recommend them if they are coming through your town.

Band of Skulls - very tight group and the most beautiful gear I've seen all year.

Tickets acquired:

Jack White (St. Louis and Milwaukee)

Paul McCartney

Har Mar Superstar/Doomtree/Bob Mould/Cloud Cult

Glen Hansard

Clutch

Brian Setzer Orchestra (holiday special)

Wow. Depends on your tastes. I loved seeing Brand New. They're incredibly sonic now. Title Fight just put out a very interesting EP on Revelation. And I have a soft spot for Taking Back Sunday and Alkaline Trio's older stuff, if they play it.

Second day, I would not -- not -- miss Thurston Moore nor the Buzzcocks. That seems imperative. I saw Thurston Moore play in noise band in New Haven, CT, and I hate noise bands, but noise made total sense that night and was just unbelievable. He's a living legend. So are the Buzzcocks.

Regardless, have fun at that great-sounding show.

I like some early Alkaline/TBS as well but haven't listened to either in years. I really like devil & god are raging inside me by brand new but again have lost track from there.

I guess what I wonder for Weller/Moore/ Mould is what they're playing live these days. I love The Jam, SY, Sugar, etc... But haven't followed much of their solo stuff...

I went to the Reggae Rise Up festival in Salt Lake City last weekend. It was a really fun and well-run festival. The headliners of the weekend were Slighty Stoopid, Matisyahu, the Expendables, and Stephen Marley. Matisyahu's set was my favorite of the weekend.

I am going to see Jurassic 5 and Dilated Peoples this Monday in Denver. Chali 2na has always been one of my favorite rappers, so I am pretty excited to see him and the rest of the J5 crew live.

Jurassic 5 (Del Mar racetrack) -- Not a fan but I was pleasantly surprised, although we did bail towards the end. First half of show was better.

Steely Dan -- Kind of a slow, meandering 1st half of show, kicked it in when the favorites were played. I'd say go, but it's not a must, imo.

Billy Joel -- Dug it; a must if you haven't yet. I thought I hadn't yet, but upon further review, I think I did, actually. Still, a must-see.

Another one that I'm forgetting right now, damn it.

Coming up:

The Cult :excited:

Yeah, I'm getting old.

I have a couple of extra tickets to Tedeschi-Trucks and Gary Clark at Red Rocks for Fridays show - anyone interested if you are around?

I saw Tegan and Sara last night, free show here in town. They were good, but man they only played 3 or 4 of their older songs, the rest was basically the entirety of their latest, poppiest album. I like the new stuff too, but prefer "Back in Your Head" era (they did play that song, nothing else from the album.

I really enjoyed the J5/Dilated Peoples show on Monday. I think rap concerts can be somewhat disappointing at times, but J5 really put on a great show. Chali 2na absolutely killed it. When considering voice, flow, and lyrics together, I think Chali belongs in the discussion of top ten all-time MCs.

Planning on Counting Crows with Toad the Wet Sprocket this summer.
They are playing in the SW in a few weeks and I would like to catch one of the shows. Have you seen them yet, how was it?

Using my stalking skills looks like you are in MN and they are playing there tomorrow, good timing. Let us know how it goes, TIA.

Tix for Petty next month.

1st row
Let me know how it is. Going seeing him October in LA at the Forum. Never seen him live.Going old school Saturday night. Foreigner, Styx and Don Felder from the original Eagles at the Greek..
More old school - going to Boston/Cheap Trick at the Forum on Tuesday. Got tickets for 1/2 price on Goldstar. $45 lower bowl. Remember a summer of headset on listening to Boston on an 8 track. Somebody tell the young uns what that means.

Counting Crows are playing after the races at Del Mar race track in a few weeks. Weezer too. Those are FUN parties. Talk about some fine scenery....

Been a long while since my last update, here are my reviews from shows in May and June that I saw - will add my reviews from New Orleans Jazz Fest and shows I have seen in July as a separate post.

Seen Recently (other reviews from earlier this year at posts #50, #116, #157)

Rob Thomas (May/NJ) – this was my first time catching him solo for one of the last shows of this tour and the show did not disappoint. Just RT with two other artists for some arrangements, great hearing the MB20 stuff in stripped down versions alongside the same for his solo material. Put it this way: liked it so much, I dropped the $40 to get the official download of the show after I saw it; the show was that good.

Hunter Hayes/The Railers/Charlie Worsham (May/Philly) – this show was the last part of Hunter’s 24 hours of concerts to bring attention to childhood hunger, an abbreviated show starting at 700AM. Hard to gauge any of the artists given that the show started at 530AM with Charlie, but it was a fun time and I would catch any of them again.

Buckcherry/Fozzy (May/Philly) – only went because of the ticket price ($5 from the box office) and my buddy is a huge Buckcherry fan. It was my 2nd time seeing Buckcherry and they put on an energetic show. “Crazy &itch” is a fun song live and I’ll see them again, even if the ticket price is not so low. Fozzy was decent; had never heard their material, but it was good hard rock. Chris Jericho fronts them and has a great time with it.

Ray LaMontagne/Jason Isbell (June/Camden) – wanted to catch Jason again after seeing him for the first time at Jazz Fest and his set did not disappoint. Jason’s wife Amanda Shires was there, so I finally caught “Elephant” live which was worth it for me. A lot of people around me who were there and had not heard Jason really liked it. Ray LaMontagne was good, but that music is not my style as it is just a little too slow for my tastes. Since I had no history with listening to him and did not pre-game, it was a bad combo to hold my interest and glad I had caught a significant ticket discount.

The Hooters (June/Philly) – free show at Xfinity Live (former site of The Spectrum), this band still sounds great. Played all of their hits and the crowd definitely was into it. Not the first time I had seen them, but I would be willing to catch them as a paying customer as well. Free was even better.

Journey/Steve Miller Band/Tower of Power (June/Camden) – yes, this is Journey without Steve Perry instead fronted by Ariel Pineda. They still sounded great and since my DeLorean is broken and I can’t go back to see Steve Perry’s Journey in their prime, best we can do. Steve Miller Band was awesome to finally see live, all the hits were played and Steve can still shred pretty good on his guitar. Tower of Power was good as well, will try to catch them next time they are at Jazz Fest.

Peter Frampton/The Doobie Brothers/Matthew Curry (Holmdel/June) – crazy that the opener (Curry) played as many songs as the headliner (Frampton). The Doobies’ were the best act of the night by far – they still can rock their 14 song set pretty good and this was the third summer in a row that we caught their show. Frampton’s nine songs included two covers (one was a pretty good instrumental of “Black Hole Sun”) and he sounded great, but if I was a fan I would be disappointed that he only really played seven original tunes. Not going to see him again. Curry was decent, but will admit that I am not familiar with his stuff, so it did not resonate too much with me.

Fall Out Boy/Paramore/New Politics (Camden/June) – my favorite non festival show so far this year, went primarily to catch FOB but loved the Paramore set. Had heard some of the Paramore stuff on the radio before (so not a fan previously) and did some pre-game, but they killed it live. “Ain’t It Fun” that closes their set sums it up nicely. FOB was just as good – only complaint is that they are playing nearly the ENTIRE new album – would have like to heard a few other songs from earlier albums instead. But, my fault for not catching them until now. So far, this show was the best for my money in 2014.

OneRepublic/The Script/American Authors (Camden/June) – third night in a row catching a show, it would be hard to top FOB/Paramore from the night before, but OneRepublic on their own came mighty close. What a great band live, even the non hit songs draw you in pretty well. “Counting Stars”, their big hit from last summer was well placed 1/3rd of the way through the show and led the way for their lesser known hits to keep the crowd happy. The Script was solid (2nd year in a row we saw them open for an artist) and American Authors was pretty decent as well.

Boston/Cheap Trick (Holmdel/June) – running on fumes (4th night in a row with a show) this night, glad it was two artists where you know 50% of the set list without even the need to pre-game. Cheap Trick opened to a “sparse” crowd so much that they invited the entire lawn down to seats in between acts. But they were far better this year vs. when I saw them open for Aerosmith in 2012. Boston’s set was full of hits and great – the current lead singer is a passable version for the deceased Brad Delp. Tom Scholz can still rip and as the band mainstay, is all over every track.

First time at MYTH. I was worried about the sound when I saw exposed trusses to metal roof decking. Lots of ringing and the sound was pretty bad bouncing around for a dedicated venue like this. Too bad. First Avenue would've been much better IMO. I asked one of the staff and she said they expected 2,000 with capacity of 4,000. Pretty weak showing for MN. Daniel and the Lion opened. Never heard of them but their tunes were decent; complemented Toad and CC. Frontman wore a big Packers hat so that was annoying lol. Checked out their FB page and they're from Baraboo, WI.

I've seen Toad before and Counting Crows twice before. This time I was underwhelmed by Toad. Some good classics from them but a little tired. Glad to see them but nothing special. Unassuming is their style and it's cool, but Glenn was talking so quietly that you could barely make out half of what he said between songs; he could've done better. Again, the venue wasn't intimate enough for them. It was smallish size-wise, but didn't 'feel' right for them. Still good for Toad fans overall and to see them back together.

Counting Crows rocked and the crowd was into it. My girls were the only kids in the whole place and they liked CC best. Lead off with Sullivan Street and also played Mr. Jones among others of course. I don't really keep track of the set lists.

It had been a long day as we had left early afternoon to travel and eat before the doors opened after 6:00. Also stood nearly the entire time as there was no seating. I wasn't too excited to not stay until the end but everybody had a great time and our kids had a great experience. $50+ per head was great value.

Counting Crows and Toad the Wet Sprocket aug 2nd in Durant Oklahoma. Got the VIP package with meet and greet. Very stoked!!

My 15 year old daughter was so excited to see Pierce the Veil and Sleeping with Sirens coming in concert together. Tickets went on sale this morning and it is a 16+ only show. She is seriously bummed.
