I'm sure that is exactly what is helping the recruiting success as of late. It certainly isn't the recent NCAA tournament play :bag: Although I do think Duke makes a very deep run this year.

Ripleys completely ruins these thread for me - even if I put him on ignore he would ruin it. I'd stay in a thread with Tim, Hucks and Eminence before sticking around here.

I've done a complete 180 on him in the last 5 years. Love him. Not sure he's all that much of an in-game coach, but he's a great guy, and sometimes it seems like he's the only coach who's an advocate for the kids.

 
Of course it's easy for Notre Dame to volunteer to vacate wins. They haven't won anything in 20 years. ;)

But seriously, if Notre Dame is cheating, then everyone is cheating.

In the long term, it obviously means nothing. Still good for a chuckle. The top recruit in the 2017 class played for UNC's opponent (originally from the Bahamas) and nearly went for 20 and 20. Getting clowned by a 16 year old (albeit an incredibly talented one) isn't a great look for UNC's front court (which should be among the nation's elite)

I know if Duke lost to this team it would concern me.

 
If one is "concerned" about a scrimmage, in August, before school starts it says more about the "concerned" than the game IMO....doesn't matter what team you pull for or root against. That's just absurd all around.

 
FSU just landed two 5-stars in the past two hours. Bacon and another kid whose name I can't remember.

They will both be averaging 8 points per game in Hamilton's system as scrappy juniors come 2017.

I disagree with sending an "A" team to the World Cup/Championships/Whatever, and I think they should turn over the head coach position a little more and give some more guys a shot, maybe go in four-year cycles (honestly, most of us could've won the World Cup as coach) but I can't knock K for staying with the USA HC for so long. It is great exposure for his program, and maybe he does have ulterior motives outside of 'Murica, but a) he doesn't seem to be screwing anything up terribly (since the Greece game) and b) any other high-profile coach would jump at the same chance.

I think he's just simply the only college coach with the cache to get the job, and the first one to realize how useful it can be. Good on him.

Does seem like a bit of a hit-piece by Woj, obv.

FWIW....I don't have a problem with him doing it. Didn't have a problem with him doing the AMEX commercials either. There's no question of the benefits. Look at recruiting. What I find interesting about the whole thing is two fold:

1. The people getting up in arms over this cultivated advantage.

2. Those who go to the ends of the earth to reject the notion that such advantage doesn't exist.

The thing is, the attacks on K are the only thing that you can't trace to his front office sources. You can understand why they'd want him to write something advocating that the US stop using NBA stars. But they don't have anything to gain from trashing K and the way he used his role on the national team to glorify himself and recruit for his program. The people who stand to gain from that are rival college coaches, and Woj has little use for them. So the obvious takeaway IMO is that Woj was calling as he sees it; of course I'm a UNC guy so he didn't say anything about K that I didn't already think, just as the Duke guys are obviously going to find a way to reject the whole thing as garbage. Presumably the truth is somewhere in between.

 
It's a weird piece because it's obvious that coaching the US team has recruiting benefits but Woj writes as if he uncovered a scandal of some sort and that something nefarious is going on.

He criticizes K for using the recruiting advantage, but also for interrupting other college coaches exercising the same recruiting advantages.

He points out that some kids from the junior nationals go to Duke as if they couldn't otherwise.

He insinuates that the fix is in to keep K as the coach but presents no evidence, or even a sensible argument why USA bball would hurt itself in irder to benefit the Duke program.

If it wasn't a nonsense hit piece the entirety of the article would say "Coaching the men's national team helps Coach K'a recruiting, and that's part (or maybe even all!!) of the reason he keeps doing it. The end. XOXO. Woj."

It's so pointed that it's hard to believe there isn't some sort of agenda for a column like that, I just have no idea what it is. I'd Google further, but I have no idea how to properly spell either person's name.

 
Bigger advantage: coaching the USA senior team or coaching the u-19 team?

Coaching the usa senior team or coaching the Dominican senior team and picking a 16 year old that you're actively recruiting as the 12th man?

Edit: this isn't meant to be some sort of defense of k. I'm honestly curious what others think

I'm not a recruiting expert, but my guess is that profile and a perceived ability to get you to the next level are by far the two most important things, and the Men's National Team coaching position gives you both in spades. Guys lose local recruits they've known all their lives to high-profile programs all the time. When was the last time a Harrison Barnes type recruit chose an Iowa State-type program because of all the contact with the program?

And in any event, K gets both out of the gig. The article recounts how he stopped in on the under 19 workout uninvited.

Plus the idea that there's greater benefit from being able to extend one 16 year old Dominican kid a roster spot over running USA basketball and putting the likes of Mason Plumlee on a gold medal winning team is a little silly.

To recruitment as a whole, I do. To a specific recruit, obviously direct contact is more important.
