Yeah, tough to bench McCullers, but I'd risk it with Bauer. He's done well against the Sux, who have been awful hitting. If you need more, this is his second time against the Red Sox. If I can avoid starting young arms the second time through against a good hitting team I do it. If McCullers does well you probably can't consider benching him again for a while, but that's certainly not a bad thing.

I just dont see why the Cubs would trade them both (dont they plan to use one of them?) or why the Phils would want them both (their best prospect is a SS).

A's get pitcher Danel Mengden, and catcher Jacob Nottingham. Cant find out much about them, but neither seem to be in Houston's top 20 prospect rankings.

Mengden is a RHP and a 2014 draft pick out of Texas A&M. Had very good numbers in Midwest League but has struggled a bit since getting moved up to Cal League. He's not the first since it's a hitters' league.
Nottingham is a 2013 HS pick. He's been productive hitting for average and power for the same clubs as Mengden. The obvious question for all low minors catchers with hitting skills is whether he can stick behind the plate. If he can, Beane may have something here but we won't know for a couple of years.

I get if they're trying to move him for a bat, but he seems like a guy who should fetch a really good MLB player. Maybe that's what they're trying to do?

It's hard to fault the Beanes on the Kazmir business. They got 1.5 productive and healthy years out of him. 4.7 rWAR from a back-loaded 2/$20M contract is an excellent return and two semi-interesting prospects as parting gifts ain't nothing. You could argue that the FA compensation pick might be a better return but that's risky biz for a 31 year old with an injury history.
It's not Kazmir's fault that the A's didn't go further last year or contend this year.

I think he made a fine deal. And with so many pitchers reportedly available at the deadline, he went and got it done ahead of the (expected) wave and gets to be the market maker for other teams looking to deal arms.

Keeping him would've been negligent. And I'd rather have two guys who are doing well in pro ball, even at the lower levels, then maybe a 85-90% chance of one comp pick.
Kazmir's worth about half a win more (projected) than Velasquez, I guess this'll give them some depth and they can keep VV fresh in case Kazmir wears down again, and I suppose it improves their chances of winning the division. Probably worth it for two guys who are likely blocked in such a good farm system, but it's pretty amazing how little Kazmir's going to affect Houston's bottom line.
'Stros and A's are 1-2 in 3rd order winning % in the AL. Cool.

Yeah they're big believers in striking early before a market gets tight. And it gives the Astros something without having to pay the massive asking prices that would come along with a Cueto/Hamels/Price.

It's been working for them lately though. They're really stuck in the middle now. They're 4 games back in the WC but are underperforming their Pythagorean by 5 games. They have some FAs but none that will bring good prospects in return. Their minor league system isn't particularly strong either so their buying options are limited.
I think the Os best shot is to stand pat and hope to get hot over the next two months. Which probably means they'll buy or sell.

Cardinals fill their need for an 8th-inning pitcher wit a low arm slot, trading AA pitcher Steve Barraclough to the Marlins for Steve Cishek.
Probably a rental. Cishek is under team control until 2018, but all those saves he racked up for the Marlins earned him Super Two arbitration money.
Good buy low because he seems to have fixed his mechanics problems that got him sent down earlier this season. He is expensive, though.
Not a good sign for Jordan Walden's return, either. Walden is finally pitching in real games in the minors, but I doubt STL makes this move if they think Walden will be good to go for the stretch run.

I'm guessing the Cubs are banking on the NL getting the DH soon. Schwarber, Rizzo, and Bryant all look like 1B at best, Rizzo is brutal there already. You can only have so many LF/1B on a team in the NL (altough maybe the Cards would disagree).
