That Lebetard article is so awful I can't even put it into words. But it does make me wonder how many bottles of Chardonnay Riley must have had before sending that text. Lol.

Listening to podcasts, seem like everyone thinks this coming season will be a ratings juggernaut.  I see the opposite.

Have never been less excited for a season.
It's going to be huge. LeBron's Heat was great for ratings.

On the competitiveness front, I assume you aren't excited because you think the Warriors are guaranteed to walk through the league. That's not necessarily true, and if ANY of the other 29 teams win a title this season, it will be a dramatic upset and amazing story. Think about that last sentence. Pretty remarkable.

This thing isn't guaranteed to work. The Warriors just had a season for the ages that ended with LeBron getting his 3rd ring. This thing is going to take awhile to gel, and while everyone is saying the right things, somebody isn't going to love their new role. Klay Thompson is a great kid, but it's hard to believe the 2nd best shooter in the world is going to love getting 10 shots a game.

A year ago, Curry, Thompson, and Draymond were universally loved. Road fans were cheering for them. A team that grew organically, developed a year to early to win a title. Lighting up scoreboards and breaking records. We don't know how this team will react to being hated by 29 fanbases.

And I wouldn't be shocked to see Draymond not loving this in a year or two. That dude's got a little crazy in him, it's what makes him so great. 6 months ago, you had people calling him the heart and soul of a 73 win team. Is he going to love being the 4th banana?

I don't have reason to doubt these guys individually that they can accept lesser roles for the good of the team, but in the history of the NBA, it might be the most difficult task. To have a team of super-talented guys continually do it. Make no mistake, if the Warriors manage the egos enough to rip off 5 straight titles, it'll be well-earned.

These are still real athletes with real emotions that have to go win Life's Ultimate Prize, and it won't be handed to them. It's going to be an exciting season.

Remember when Riley won multiple titles with LAL and managed Kareem taking a back seat to Magic without having to trade either one?

Remember when Riley got NYK back to the Finals for the first time in over 20 years installing a system completely different from what he ran in LAL?

Remember when Riley took over the bench midseason and led MIA to the franchise's first title?

Remember when Riley staged the greatest free agency coup in league history, setting up the franchise for four straight Finals appearances and winning two more titles?

Riley was enormously successful with three different franchises across three different eras and installing three different systems.  He's one of the greatest minds in the history of all professional sport.  No one could have stopped LeBron from going home, and I'm not going to criticize Riley for refusing to overpay Wade just because some other team is stupid enough to give him his asking price.
So now Riley is a genius for winning titles with 2 of the most stacked teams in NBA history? Something that he had nothing to do with putting together each time? I'm sorry, but you only get so much credit when somebody else gives you Kareem, Magic and Worthy and Lebron, Wade and Bosh decide to team up.

LeBatard hot off the press, never sugarcoats it.

Wade felt unwanted and his relationship with Riley was in tatters, oof!
Dan LeBatard is one of the worst doosh bags ever, Pure race baiter. I can't stand that ### clown.

He is probably right though. Wade went diva and left. I wish him all the luck and hope he enjoys going "home" for his last season or two. Because that is all he has left in reality. And recruit for the Bulls? Not at 35 and 36 years of age (if he sticks around for year 2) his contemporaries have moved on. It's over.

Time for a new era in Miami. I look forward to seeing what Riles can cook up next. It's all part of the fun of being a fan. I made sure I savored every minute of the Big 3 era. Anyone with a brain knew it would all end sooner rather than later. It was awesome.

Go Heat!!!

Yup. I don't understand how you can write that column without mentioning that Wade has taken pay cuts/below market deals for the good of the organization over and over again.  He even writes "Wade felt unwanted, for whatever his reasons."  Maybe because he'd taken pay cuts and below market deals for the good of the organization over and over again and now was being asked to do it again in a league so flush with dough it's throwing $64 million at Timofey Mozgov?  Maybe because despite all the stuff you wrote about him he's never been the highest paid player on the team?  Weird that everyone except the city's foremost sports columnist seemed able to put it together.

Do LeBatard and Riley have some sort of mutually beneficial deal or something?  Access in exchange for defense/praise in the media?

GSW vs. LeBron 3.0 is pretty compelling
Knicks and Bulls will be very entertaining. Westbrook free to take 40FGA per game and gun for the MVP. The Cousins meltdown and trade rumors should start a month into the season. Celtics having a legit big finally and taking a run at Toronto and possibly the #1 seed in the East. LAC completely imploding. Houston giving up 125+ a night.

Lots of good story lines.

Your off base on Lebron, Wade and Bosh. He maneuvered and made it all possible with his front office and cap work. He also had to pitch Lebron very hard. Seriously people love to dismiss it.....but Riley had a big hand in this as well.

So I guess Phil backed into his titles having Jordan, Pippen and whoever....and Kobe, Shaq and who ever. Please man.

thats how it works for localized writers.

An asterisk on 7 titles spanning many different eras and teams?  Wow, that's a new one.

hot takes heeeeeeeerrrrreeeee get your hot takes heeeeeeeeeerrrrreeeeeeee look i am just trying to monetize this thing is all take that to the bank bromigos

I could see the Dubs throwing this season.  people forget that the Heat did the same thing in their first year against the Mavs.  everyone calling the season a formality, all kinds of backlash against the big 3, well turns out they can't even win the damn thing.  see? we're not that good.  everyone backs off.. then, boom 2 titles in the next 3 years.  don't fall for it, people.

its gonna be even better when the bucks end the dubs winning streak this year again take that to the bank bromigos

Pay cuts? Riley told the big three here is the pot.....you guys split it up among yourselves.

This was talked about at length down here. The three of them worked out the money together. And Wade was probably the 3rd best player in that era....bottom line. Bosh brought more to the big three than Wade did at that point.

No one told Wade to opt out after Lebron opted out and Bosh opted out. His BFF ####ed him over royally by not telling him he was leaving. Wade taking pay cuts. The guy got a 90MM shoe deal because the Big Three came together. He has numerous local endorsement deals up and down the city, he probably was offered a future minority stake in the team as well. He threw it all away over ego.

He has 3 rings......you think he is making it up in the numerous endorsement deals and the 90MM show contract? None of that....none of that happens without the Big 3 coming together. Taking some small pay cuts has been made up plus plus with all the deals he has received off the court because of the titles.

My heart ####### bleeds......LMFAO. Please. He left over 3.5MM a year and not being a priority at age 34/35. Please man.

I love Wade, he was fantastic down here, but it came to a point where he wanted to be phone call number 1 at 12:01am. He was not. They locked up Whiteside (which I am on record as being very skeptical about but Riles believes in him so good enough for me) and pursued KD. I can't blame Riley for trying to grab the best free agent on the market when you have Wade who other than last season can't even give you more than 60-62 games a season anymore and breaks down every year. Last season was fantastic for Wade at his age. I doubt we see it again.

Again...wish him well. Loved his time down here. But you will be very surprised at how many Heat fans are not that upset and supported Riley this off-season and not caving to a bad contract for a very old SG who can't hit the three and can't get to the line like he once did. Age happens. Dynasties fade, and teams must move on.

Kudos to Riley and Arison for not mortgaging the future of the team anymore than they already have (because we are stripped of draft picks) for the sake of some pride and 7MM. #### that. I look forward to the future. It was time. For years on this board all I have read is how washed up Wade is. So the team agrees. They have moved on.

Of course....after his career is over. He will come back here and have his number raised into the rafters and we will all cheer and love Dwyane again. Hell I will root for him as a Bull. I love the guy as a player. But it was time to change course.

Go Heat!!!!!

This is really spectacular.

Giving Riley credit for the extra off-court money Wade made for "the big three coming together" when Wade not only had a huge role in recruiting James and Bosh but was also, you know, one of the big three?  That was amazing, certainly the highlight of the whole thing. But it's all pretty great.

Actually, if he didn't demand a 3rd season from the Heat (which I don't know), the money was barely different at all when you bring taxes into the equation.  You can't talk about taxes when it benefits your argument as a selling piece for Miami and then leave it out when your superstar bolted from the warm sunshine, where all the big names want to play.  There's no 7MM difference here, sorry.

When is this Riley presser?  Hopefully he goes into full salt mode like he did when Lebron left.

I am not giving Riley all the credit for the off the court money. Wade knew damn well he could take a little less to make himself that much more marketable with the Big 3 and multiple rings. And yes Wade was a huge part of the recruiting. But Riley closed the sale.

Come on man.

I am a huge Wade fan. Huge. But its not like losing Lebron. That wrecked the team and was a left hook. This was actually somewhat expected apparently by the team. I never thought Wade would leave over a small amount. But he did it. But he is really up in age and I get why the team was ok with him walking. I dont even think it was the money. It was the pride.

I truly wish him well. We got 13 years and 11 post season appearances. I am not complaining at all.

Most teams would kill for a Team president and GM like Riley. Hate all you want ( since it is so fashionable and cool to dismiss Riley all the time despite his insane career success). All I know is since 1995 The Heat have been one of the best basketball franchises to watch and the clear class of Miami major league sports.

More importantly Jose Calderon was shipped to the Lakers and the Cavs used a trade exception to get the corpse of Dunleavy and Jefferson re-upped.

I didn't say losing Wade would kill the team. I didn't say he left because of money and nothing else. I didn't say Riley was a bad GM or that he hadn't had a successful career.  All I said was that the LeBetard article was silly because it pretended not to know why Wade might feel slighted by or bitter towards the Heat front office when everyone has a pretty good idea of why Wade might feel that way.  No idea where the rest of your rant came from, but it's top notch stuff!

But people initially will want to see the dumpster fires that some franchises are cementing themselves into for the next 3-5 years.

I agree though that the shine of the GS team has worn off and a lot of folks won't enjoy watching it. I can see fans wanting to root against them now and if they should falter as the Heat did Year 1, the vultures will appear in droves.

Seems like the 2016/2017 Champion has already been crowned. In fact we could be talking several years before anything else emerges as a true threat or new dynasty, might be 2020 before the NBA gets good again.  ;)
That's when the Sixers reign begins.

That's when the Sixers reign begins.
brohan by 2020 the sixers could have like 8 number one overall picks on there roster what do you even do when the first three guys off the bench were number ones overall cripes its like replacing jordan with labron just give them the rings now take that to the bank bromigos

Wade took just $7.5M more over two years, when you figure state income tax in IL vs. FL (none), is this just a F U from Wade to Riley? Simply tired of always being the one who does the "right thing" for the org?

I love Durant going to GS (mainly becuase I am a Warriors band wagon jumper as I love Curry and hate LeBron).  I don't get why people knock super stars for trying to win, yet criticize those that "never won a title" as automatically being on a lower level than those that did.  Durant wants a ring and went to the best place to make that happen.  Good for him (hot take right there I know).

But, if the Mount Rushmore of morons, Barkley, Miller, and Steven A. Smith, are so adamant this is a poor move, I'm even more convinced of its correctness.

I can't find anything definitive, but I assume the Cavs used the Haywood trade exception that was going to expire later this month?

You're right it's not a money thing...it's about winning. I think Agent Zero's IG post sums it up pretty well:

Who ever thinks #Kevin is a coward for leaving#YourStupid...Media has FOOLED you for decades..they have made you believe that the best players and smartest are champions....if you didnt win a ring you're legacy is incomplete.#CBarkley #Ewing #Cwebb #A.I #ReggieM etc cant be the best of the best because they didnt win a ring BUT no one has EVER mentioned the (Business of Basketball) only 5 % of sports owners wanna win CHAMPIONSHIPS and will SPEND the money to do so. #Lakers #GS #spurs#Dallas #Miami #NYK then u have the (Lets just make the playoffs group?) then u have the#donaldsterling mindsets..those are teams that make money no matter what because its a sports city??now #Philly has become the new #Clipsget rid of any player that shows signs of Maxing Out? theres a reason the same teams are ####ty every year and they feed you that (Rebuilding BULL ####) they bank ticket sells on one player...SO how the hell is a players legacy Defined if the ppl who are making the decision AINT about winning BUT money...either win 10 rings and make (500 million) or NO rings and make (2 billion)??any player thats drafted to any team other then the ones i named YOU LEGACY is ####ed...#Lebron realized after #DanGilbertbought that team for 500 million he wasnt spending any extra to put REAL (not old has beens)players around him to win SO he bounced to a owner who would spend to win..NOW the media forced kevin to leave YES FORCED if he stayed and didnt win KNOWING they wasnt signing one free agent this summer to help them win then (he aint a GREAT) if he leaves to chase a ring then (Hes a coward) if he went to a bad team then (hes chasing money) he went into free agency with one foot on a banana pill and the other in a grave #NoGreatChoice ?? CAVS won the chip this year #GS reloaded #NYKloaded up and who have the CAVS actually went after?? they havent signed one big free agent outside #LarryHughes05..i see why coaches get FIRED so much BECAUSE #GM's give they asses magic beans for players #LBJVoice (i want yall to sign #KD#GM i just saved us alot of money by switching to the broke mans #KD heres your new teammate #PootyTang NOW go out and win that ring ??
Philly is the new Clips is the laziest half asses analysis you could have. Drags his whole argument down.

What's interesting is that I have yet to meet a single person that knows anything about sports, nor encounter a single sportswriter's work, that makes an argument that a lack of championships matters in the slightest.

consistently astonishing how people assume that athletes are cookie cutter, paint by numbers, whatever.

if X then Y because everything is black and white, i guess.

Dwyane Wade played for Miami. therefore he must stay in Miami because Miami fans love him. if he leaves it's because he's a terrible person and nothing more. he's a money grubbing traitor. he was always a horrible human being it just took money until 2016 to figure it out.

jesus. get a grip.

I dunno, I'm kind of unenthusiastic about next season myself.  The best seasons IMO are the ones with 5 or 6 potential contenders, maybe even more, and lots of story lines. The 2014-15 season comes to mind, with five 55+ win teams in the West and the surprise 60 win Hawks in the East and everyone wondering whether and how quickly the Lebron Cavs Part II would come together. With seasons like that you have multiple contenders playing every night and at least a couple games between contenders every week.  I enjoyed last season a lot less, even with GSW's run at the wins record.  Lots can change of course but right now this coming season looks like an even more extreme version of last year, except presumably without the run at the wins record. Even the secondary stuff seems less relevant- for example I'm excited to see what improved teams like the Pacers and Celtics* can do, but that matters less knowing that if they somehow take out the Cavs it probably just means the Finals will be a foregone conclusion.

ETA: And the T-Wolves of course.  Can't leave out the Official Team of the FFA NBA Thread

it's the off-season. people over-react. every season is unpredictable, that's what makes it great. there are always a couple power teams that everyone predicts in the Finals.. usually a consensus winner, etc. based on what we think will happen.  sometimes that comes to fruition (50% right in 2016, right teams, wrong winner) sometimes not.

give it time! still a full off-season of arrests, death, retirements, hirings/firings, injury ahead of us and that doesn't include disgruntled players, team chemistry issues and in-season shenanigans!

i'll go out on a limb here and say Timberwolves v Knicks in the final

coming in to last year everyone was saying Spurs v GS in the West.. Cleveland is the only possibly good team in the East and they'd be a 7 seed in the West

one never knows

Come next June...everyone is going to be hyped for a Cavs-GSW Finals.  It's no different than the Bulls years.

it is also great to root against captain crapbeard out there in hou i hope that the nba lets the refs know that if a guy is flopping they should just let the other team beat the hell out of him for being a floppywussbag take that to the crush the crapbeard bank bromigos

I wish him all the best. No ill will at all towards Wade. He did what was best for himself. He has every right to do whatever he wants.

We will miss him. There is barely any negativity on our air waves and press down here right now. Just sadness. But most support the team and the decision to sever ties for obvious reasons. Divorce is never pretty. There will always be blame, anger etc. But all is pretty calm down here. Nothing like when Lebron pulled a fast one on Pat. That was shocking. We never thought after 4 straight Finals he would bolt. This one although shocking (in as far as he was a lifetime Heat player not anymore lol) is much easier to digest. I felt far more anger and disgust when Lebron bolted.

Wade gave everything he had to The Heat and should be toasted. He is the greatest Miami sports star (sorry Dan). He will be missed dearly.

it's the off-season. people over-react. every season is unpredictable, that's what makes it great. there are always a couple power teams that everyone predicts in the Finals.. usually a consensus winner, etc. based on what we think will happen.  sometimes that comes to fruition (50% right in 2016, right teams, wrong winner) sometimes not.

give it time! still a full off-season of arrests, death, retirements, hirings/firings, injury ahead of us and that doesn't include disgruntled players, team chemistry issues and in-season shenanigans!

i'll go out on a limb here and say Timberwolves v Knicks in the final

coming in to last year everyone was saying Spurs v GS in the West.. Cleveland is the only possibly good team in the East and they'd be a 7 seed in the West

one never knows

Sure, I'm just giving my initial reaction to the Durant deal.  No problem with his decision, but from an entertainment standpoint I'm worried it's a negative for what I personally enjoy about the NBA product.  And it's not like I hated last season or something, it was still incredibly fun of course. Just not nearly as fun as 2014-15 IMO.

Also possible that the Wizards' return to mediocrity and failure after two years of borderline relevance may have something to do with my feelings.
