Their corps of bigs isn't as good this year as it was last year. And Varejao was playing in the Finals. They don't need Hakeem, you just need a guy who can defend the cup at a reasonable level.

Varejao's performance in game 7 went a long way towards losing them the finals. Not only can't he defend the cup, he's a huge liability everywhere else too.
I wonder if Bogut would have wanted to come to Lakers/Walton if LA had waited on signing a big man. Maybe a sweet 2-year-extension would have greased the wheels.

In other news, Duncan dropped a new podcast yesterday and mentioned that he was trying to talk to nba people to get a read on why we didn't see more 1 or 2 year deals at obscene per-year amounts. Some had speculated (and it made sense to me) that you could see guys just getting like a 1/$28, because the teams had the money in the short-term and wouldn't want to get tied up. Like a Marvin Williams for like 2/$44, so you don't risk a long-term crater due to age and/or motivation. And he would still have only had to bet on himself to make up more than $10 million on his next contract in 2 years. Will be interested to see if there is any info as to whether the players or teams were less interested in this.
This is good. I also kind of dig the United Nations because it pulls in Luwawu, Sergio, Korkmaz, even Stauskas. Another reason why the Manu signing would have been awesome- we need a South American

Was looking through the wiki page of NBA nicknames, some weird ones out there that I've never heard of (gb wikipedia) and some good ones too:
Bismack Biyombo - "Bizzy Bo", "The Acrobatic from the Democratic (Republic of the Congo)" "BB-8", "Biznation", "Big Bizness" [28] (5 for Biyombo? Really?)
after years of severely doubting everything the Bucks do.. i think it's time to do a 180 and heap praise on all their decisions to see if that makes a difference.
this might be the single greatest signing in franchise history.
finally, a championship move by the Bucks front office!
Also acceptable. I think of it in terms of what's the best name to go along with the Durant mural that's going to be on the side of some crumbling liquor store on MacArthur.
"I think the coach wants to bring an assistant coach to help Ricky on his shooting and I think that's where we're going to start out and go and we'll see how good Kris Dunn is," Taylor said.
Basically, there have been about a dozen point guards in the 3-point era that have been league average players as rookies. Don't expect too much of Dunn in 2016.

Alex Abrines is coming over from Barcelona to join the Thunder. I'm sure he'll make everyone forget Durant by Thanksgiving. If Dion Waiters ever gets offered a contract this means the Thunder will likely not match.
IIRC the Kings can offer whatever interest they have in this year's pick or their 2021 pick. I wouldn't do the latter and I dont think the post-Catanella Kings would either. I like Rubio (and his contract) a lot but most teams have good PGs so the trade market for a good but flawed player like that probably isn't as strong as it should be.
Rubio is certainly a flawed player but if you could pair him with a few shooters, he would be an all-star level PG. He does everything you would want in a PG other than he can't shoot and he finishes at the rim like a guy a foot shorter. He is one of the best defenders at the position, and could easily guard shooting guards, he's a transcendent passer, and rebounds like a small forward. He should easily fetch a mid-to-late lottery pick.
With all that said, I think the T-Wolves should trade him. Dunn looks to be the real deal and they can't play Dunn, Rubio, and Wiggins at the same time because none of them can shoot. Unfortunately, there are a lot of good point guards out there and not many teams which could hide Rubio's weaknesses. San Antonio would be a nice fit. OKC could work if they trade Westbrook. Atlanta might be an ideal fit, if they aren't sold on Schroder. If Miami is looking to rebuild, a Dragic for Rubio swap would be interesting for both sides.
